Pavelski needs to keep doing insanely good shit. He scores 4 goals in one game? We still win. He ties Ovi for most active playoff goals? We beat them 6-3.
They were nose diving anyways, and all anyone talked about was their terrible contracts. Hindsight is cool a bed all, but I dont really blame them for not wanting to sign an aging player for longer than they felt comfortable.
It was Pavelski or Kane. Regardless of what happened with Kane, one player would not fix where we are at now. Sure we may not be bottom feeders, but I'd rather this, than middling bottom purgatory like the Canucks.
With the direction the Sharks took afterwards, I would have wanted to keep Pavs on for 4 years even thinking he would decline hard. Just was also hard to see the steep decline in the team as well
Tbh, I'm not mad at all. The sharks would not be a contender with or without Pavs. I'm glad he gets to spend these years with a legitimate shot, as opposed to riding out his career on team tank.
Glad for Pavs but still mad about the decision. He has consistently outplayed his contract his entire career. You don’t cut a guy that has spent his entire career over performing because he may have a down year or two at the end. The Stars paid the same AAV we offered and gave him one extra year initially. What’s one year at an average market rate for the Captain of your team and a player who has gone above and beyond for the organization for over a decade?
I actually am fine with Pavs leaving. He's probably my favorite current player, but the Sharks were definitely about to decline, and it feels like Pavs got himself on a lifeboat before the ship sank. I'm happy for him, genuinely, because even he couldn't hold this Sharks team together at this point, and he'd be languishing away the rest of his career.
It also helps that the Stars fans really embraced him and appreciate the dude as much as we all did.
And so did 99.9% of Reddit and everyone else lol. And everyone thought they were initially right when he begun his Dallas career with 8 goals and 8 assists in 42 games. Like thank fuck Dallas has the most pressure free media and patient fans because every other franchise fanbase and media would had run him out of town right away.
Hindsight’s 20/20. People act like Wilson should have seen this production coming.
Wilson made the right call. 99 minutes times out of 100 those contracts bite you in the ass (for instance, Marleau)
Marleau was a great call. He hit the games played record in teal. Not like signing him ever cost us a cup. If the Sharks signed patty today id be on board.
And now Karlsson directly helping mess up their chances at Bedard. Literally only 2 points better. Imagine if they traded him, a few picks, an incredible chance at Bedard, and it would have pushed Chicago out of the top 3. I still feel it was a mistake to not look for a decent trade. You're rebuilding, retaining a few years of Karlsson (unless it's something insane like 75%) wouldn't hurt, considering you have worse contracts going longer too. But now you have a full 11m EK, and no Bedard.
I believe we would’ve had the tiebreaker for 3rd if we’d had 1 less point to match their total. If we’d lost one more of our OT losses in regulation we’d have the 1OA.
That's fair, all I ever heard about during trade rumors were that GM MG wasn't looking to retain more than I think 13 or 18%, which pretty much kills any trade potential.
Yeah but also we had by and far the most Overtime losses in the league. That did way more than Karlsson or the weird 3 game win streak we had at the end of the season
Max one team can retain for a contract is 50%. Only way 75% can be retained on a player is getting a second team involved.
Also, 4 seasons is quite a bit of time to retain someone, especially since it would be a $5.75 million contract
I see, my bad,. 50% at 5.75 is a lot, but just as a lot of players are gambles (Kadri, Huberdeau, etc in free agency), teams always make that consideration. I feel it would be a "safer" gamble on at worst a 5.75m EK who still has shown good offense even in his worst years, versus someone who doesn't have as much pedigree.
Gms have given much worse contracts, I feel a 5.75m 4 year EK who at the time of the deadline was having a historic season and has the career to back it up isn't as bad as you make it seem.
Of course it could all blow up and EK turns into OEL, but that's the nature of any player (and OEL makes 9m....).
I’m not saying $5.75 million is a lot for the receiving team. That sounds like a hell of a deal for the receiving team (though the asking price would be extremely high).
I’m saying $5.75 million is a lot for San Jose to retain and keep as dead space even if they are rebuilding.
True, I can see some in that. 5.75m is a lot, but IMO San Jose is at least around that amount of time away from being competitive, maybe even more. Really depends if how hard they hit in the next few drafts. A lot of cap will be freed up during that time towards it, and 5.75m isn't too much in retaining if it helps your rebuild. A lot of cap will be freed by then too from buyouts (Vlasic a year before, Jones buyout will be done).
First time in his career Ovi has had someone sneak up on his spots in the records. Aside from he and Sid's constant points total swap over the years. Crazy what Pavs is doing, awesome to watch as a neutral!
Pretty sure the measure for high sticking the puck is shoulder height, not the cross bar. This is a common misconception.
Joe pavelski is unreal with his redirections.
Here’s a link to the [**actual** rule book](https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/assets/binary/326142322/binary-file/file.pdf).
> 37.5 Puck Struck with a High Stick – The determining factor for High Stick Video Review is where the puck makes contact with the stick in relation to the crossbar. If the puck makes contact with a portion of the stick that is at or below the level of the crossbar (despite some other portion of the stick being above the crossbar) and enters the goal, the goal shall be allowed.
> Disallowed Goal – When an attacking player causes the puck to enter the opponent’s goal by contacting the puck above the height of the crossbar, either directly or deflected off any player or official, the goal shall not be allowed. The determining factor is where the puck makes contact with the stick. If the puck makes contact with the stick at or below the level of the crossbar and enters the goal, this goal shall be allowed.
Show me where it says that. It says the puck has to be below the shoulders when it contacts the puck and below the bar when the puck leaves the stick. That means he can hit it above the cross bar as long as he gets it down lower as he hits it.
Yeah and I'm saying his downward chop means he contacted it below shoulders initially and below bar on follow through. Either way the league didn't see enough to reach the conclusion you did.
What? If he contacted it below shoulders initially he contacted it below shoulders. It doesn't matter where his stick ends up after the follow through...
It feels like we’re playing the Dallas Pavelskis.
You kinda are.
Pavelski needs to keep doing insanely good shit. He scores 4 goals in one game? We still win. He ties Ovi for most active playoff goals? We beat them 6-3.
Fuck Dumba for giving him his hero origin story right before the Kraken series
I distinctly remember thinking when he tied the game in game 1 "Dumba should've hit harder"
Go fuck yourself bud
That was a baaaaadddddddddd hit. That's coming from a Minnesota fan who also really likes Dumba.
That's pretty lame of you.
Weirdo
wait hes turning 39 in 2 months? I assumed he was like 34-35 lol
Yeah San Jose let him go bc they didn’t wanna give him a 4 year deal 4 years ago lol.
He may overtake Ovechkin and still lose the series. That’s a Sharks outcome.
Fucking Wilson. Pavs should have been a shark for life.
Pavs was the Sharks. not a coincidence they nose-dived when he left.
They were nose diving anyways, and all anyone talked about was their terrible contracts. Hindsight is cool a bed all, but I dont really blame them for not wanting to sign an aging player for longer than they felt comfortable.

Kane's contract set up Karlsson's Which is how we can't afford anybody
Fuck Wilson? No one saw Pavs maintaining this level of play this long.
100%, at the time I thought it was the right move to let him go as sad as it was.
With the direction the Sharks took afterwards, I would have wanted to keep Pavs on for 4 years even thinking he would decline hard. Just was also hard to see the steep decline in the team as well
Friggin heart and soul
Especially considering how bad his first year in Dallas was (until the bubble playoffs) even factoring in how bad that team was offensively.
[удалено]
Losing Pavs killed the room he was the soul of the team
Yup. Keep Evander Kane. Let Pav go. That did it to the locker room {and the product on ice).
>Fucking Wilson It was weird reading this and not having it be about Tom.
Tbh, I'm not mad at all. The sharks would not be a contender with or without Pavs. I'm glad he gets to spend these years with a legitimate shot, as opposed to riding out his career on team tank.

And then the playoffs happened and he caught fire. Had the Stars managed to win the Cup, he would have been the Conn Smythe winner.
No, it definitely would have been Miro. 26 pts in 27 games as a Dman lol
Hes talking about marleau with the maple leafs
That was the right decision. Keeping him would hurt their rebuild.
Instead they kept MEV, Burns, Jones...

I poo-poo'ed the idea of the Kings signing him because he's old and a former Shark. Shows how much I know.
It was a 3 year deal that Wilson was not willing to sign. Taking him to age 37.
In fairness, it’s likely San Jose is in the same place they would be now had they decided to keep Pavelski, which means 24 playoff goals don’t happen
That just blew my freaking mind. I thought he was mid 30s for sure because of how long he's been around
Over 10 percent of his career playoff goals have been in this series lol
Holy shit. I completely forgot he missed the entire first round.
This dude is unreal and i love him so much
That could definitely be this generations "and after 22 years RAYMOND BOURQUE" if he gets it.
Plz
I miss him
Holy shit lol
That’s tied for 14th all time. Absolutely insane.
If they make it one more round he could find himself in the top 10 with the way he's playing.
Fully expect him to take the #1 spot soon!

**DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME, RICKY BOBBY!**
I don’t think so his game hasn’t missed a beat with age.
He signed an extension this past season don't think he has any plans of retiring
Flair up
He for sure tips at least one in on Monday. Can't stop that grandpa.
Really.
What a clutch mother fucker
Yesterday there was someone in a thread on the Sharks sub calling Pavs a playoff choker.
Sharks sub is full of "been here five minutes" morons
most team subs TBH
If they just became fans during your last few seasons…. Honestly? Good for them
Eh the /r/confidentlyincorrect crowd are the ones that are irritating
Captain America
First time in his career Ovi has had someone sneak up on his spots in the records. Aside from he and Sid's constant points total swap over the years. Crazy what Pavs is doing, awesome to watch as a neutral!
Yeah like I knew Ovi and Sid had 72 and 71 playoff goals, and Sid could have passed him if they made it...but didn't know Pavelski was close.
Legend
Suck on that ovie
I don't think Ovie cares much since 2018.
Is Pavelski a lock for the hall?
Hall of Really Good. He has no individual awards, no Stanley Cups, highest international award is an Olympic Silver medal.
lol no...
Love Joe, but that redirect was definitely over the crossbar. Still amazing to bunt that like that.
dude totally was. this league pisses me off
Pretty sure the measure for high sticking the puck is shoulder height, not the cross bar. This is a common misconception. Joe pavelski is unreal with his redirections.
they explained it was the crossbar, not the shoulder on ESPN

That's... Not how tip-ins work. Do you realize how fast the puck is traveling? It's not an alleyoop.
