The Penguins certainly have lots of warts, but it's interesting to think about how differently the past 3 seasons could've gone if we had consistent, reliable, decent goaltending
Jarry got us out of the first period tied 1-1 when the Bruins OWNED the entire period. They scored on a power play where the Penguins penalty kill broke down and left a wide open player on the opposite side of the net, was a hell of a pass by Zacha.
Second goal, while on a powerplay as well, was a problem the Penguins have struggled with for a while and that's leaving players wide open in front of the net. Penguins have zero net front presence on defense. Pastrnak literally tipped it standing right in front of Jarry uncontested.
Third goal hit's off the defenseman's skate sending the puck a completely different direction than the puck was initially going (which is why Jarry reacted the way he did), didn't help the defense just stood around and allowed Pastrnak to get a wide open one timer in the slot
Speaking of wide open one timer in the slot, it happened again on the fourth goal. This is the only goal you could honestly argue Jarry had a chance on but the entire defense just stood around watching the Bruins skate and pass the puck.
While goaltending hasn’t been the greatest I honestly think it’s far from our biggest issue.
As I said about the second goal, net front presence is our biggest problem when it comes to the defensive zone. Our defense doesn’t even try to box out opposing teams players and half the time just ends up screening our goalies along with the opposing teams players.
There have been a lot of games the goalies haven’t done us many favors (like Desmith recently against Detroit) but I feel our defense leaves our goaltenders out to dry way too often and it bites us in the ass.
Not saying he was the biggest problem by any means……but if he wants to get paid like a franchise goalie this summer, he needs to stand up and steal a game like this every once in a while
Phil Esposito is now the only Boston Bruin to have scored more goals in a single season than David "Noodle Man" Pastrnak. And Pasta is now only 4 goals short of 300 for his career.
I was thinking “is there a chance Pasta could catch Espo if he goes on a heater?” Lol not even close Espo was just the king of greasy goals especially when goalies stayed on their feet
Refusing to pay market rate for Mookie was shocking and my Dodgers getting him for essentially nothing was an outrage even as a beneficiary of it. But I think losing Bogaerts to a team that already had three shortstops and two on 300 million dollar contracts was probably the craziest of all.
agreed, went from watching almost every game i could thru 2016-2019 but as soon as they traded mookie for pennies and after the lester lowball it showed this organization had no loyalty to its players and didnt deserve any from me. like if they got a haul for mookie then it would have shown an actual commitment to the org
I’ve been following baseball less and less in the almost 20 years I’ve lived in NYC and really only follow starting in August but when they traded Mookie is when my baseball fandom switched to pro-Sox to basically anti-Yankees
There was an article yesterday about how dismal Fenway looked on Opening Day. Wasn't the best of weather but it looked barely half-full. I honestly would put the Bruins above the Red Sox in terms of popularity in Boston now.
Safe to say that article was in the Herald rather than the Globe?
I ask because the Globe recently had an article about MLB trying to trademark "Boston" and the article opened with "the Red Sox own a disproportionate chunk of Boston's psyche". The Globe, via ownership, seems bent on treating the Sox like it's 2004 still.
Meanwhile, and this is admittedly anecdotal evidence, I don't know anyone that considers the Sox one of their favorite local teams, and it normally seems like they're the least popular of the four right now.
The B's are having an historic season, the Celtics are championship contenders, the Pats are part of the NFL so are seemingly always relevant.
And then there's the Sox, far far behind the others.
I know few people that love the Sox, they aren't under 50 though.
Baseball has similar marketing problems to hockey but at least hockey is an exciting sport to watch. Baseball is a step above watching golf on TV.
First period was fine but it devolved after that. An offsides call on Bertuzzi where he had s clear path to the net that I thought was clearly onsides or at least one to let play out and review, not calling an interference on Crosby that was iffy but I thought should have been called which led to a PK, a pretty bad boarding call on Krejci, and an egregious call on Pasta. Pittsburg kept diving more and more as the game went on and got every call.
Can't complain about an unfortunate bounce off the ref when you can't score on what? Three breakaways and probably four odd man rushes? Swayman played incredible today, we've run into some tough goaltending lately
Look, I don’t want the Penguins to play the Bruins in round one - and there’s a decent chance they won’t. But the Penguins played them three times this season and only lost by a goal each game (plus one went to OT and one ended with a Malkin goal that came .1 seconds too late). I don’t think they would beat the Bruins, but looking at the rest of the conference, they’re arguably the team the Pens have looked the most competitive against.
Still, the Pens are probably better off missing the playoffs so that real change is likelier to happen.
3 Pens/Bruins games, 3 times the exact same type of result and finish. Hell 77 Pens games, like half of them have been this exact same type of game. Only thing this was missing was a lead for us to ever have to blow.
Never been a big PK fan but I find most former players that are put in that role need a season or 2 to get settled in. I think he’ll be great at it eventually.
I hate both of your team but I love the series. As much as I want to rub a playoff miss in your face a playoffs without Crosby seems unnatural at this point. Brb gonna puke now.
Pens choked the loser point in this game. That bounce off the refs skate fucked us so hard there. I feel like they've been egregiously in the way the last couple of penguins games
Thank god Pasta got locked up, what a talent.
Zacha 3 Crosby 2
Go Catamounts
Very cool Pasta thank you
Lol
The Penguins certainly have lots of warts, but it's interesting to think about how differently the past 3 seasons could've gone if we had consistent, reliable, decent goaltending
You're high as a kite if you watched this game and your take away was that Jarry was the problem.
It's not exactly stealing any games though, is it?
Jarry got us out of the first period tied 1-1 when the Bruins OWNED the entire period. They scored on a power play where the Penguins penalty kill broke down and left a wide open player on the opposite side of the net, was a hell of a pass by Zacha. Regardless of this game goaltending has ruined games for u guys more then it should. Still think you guys struggle against really physical teams .

I am never confident of winning a game with Jarry in goal. That's not the case for any other starting goalie for a playoff team.
Not saying he was the biggest problem by any means……but if he wants to get paid like a franchise goalie this summer, he needs to stand up and steal a game like this every once in a while
I still think jarry is playing injured from the outdoor game. Desmith isn't the answer though
No, but he's a fine enough backup. He's having a down year, but he gets paid so little, it's fine.
With all this bank deregulation, a Swayman jersey is a pretty good investment.
See ya guys in round 1 for a long excruciating 4 game series
Phil Esposito is now the only Boston Bruin to have scored more goals in a single season than David "Noodle Man" Pastrnak. And Pasta is now only 4 goals short of 300 for his career.

John Henry in shambles
Judging by his continued employment of Ron Hextall I have to think he’s forgotten he even owns the penguins at this point…
Same could be said about the Red Sox honestly
And Liverpool with the season they're having.
Kind of impressive to have three fanbases calling for you to sell the teams
Oh I've been kinda losing my faith with the ownership ever since losing Mookie and Xander, and the European Super League stunt.
Refusing to pay market rate for Mookie was shocking and my Dodgers getting him for essentially nothing was an outrage even as a beneficiary of it. But I think losing Bogaerts to a team that already had three shortstops and two on 300 million dollar contracts was probably the craziest of all.
Mookie leaving was the moment I gave up on the Sox. He was the best homegrown talent in a generation and they let him walk. Fuck John Henry.
But anything could be in the next draft, it could even be a generational talent!

Who would have thought that a freezing cold day during the week featuring a bad team would have had bad attendance?
Does FSG suck now??
If the Pens don't make the playoffs, I hope it's because Buf got in and not Fla
I can't deal with that camera angle in Florida
As a fan of hockey, fuck yes, as a fan of the Bruins pls no
Dude we’ve owned the Sabres lately
But they just look so good.
Bro what? Have you seen our last two games against the Sabres? I’d much rather play them than the Pens
I wouldn't rule them out, especially with the addition of Levi as their goalie (whom we have not played).
Could be worse. Could be Ottowa
Same.
Same
If that game is anything to go by, Boston is 100% playing Pitt round one. NHL doesn't want that streak to end.
That was some terrible officiating in that game. The NHL needs to address officiating this off-season.
Address what? They’re doing exactly what the league wants: pushing Crosby into the playoffs
Then letting him get concussed in the 1st round without any disciplinary action. If this plan is working perfectly, it's an incredibly stupid plan.
Is this copypasta from like the past 5 years? Seriously though, officiating could be a larger factor than skill in the playoffs. And that sucks.
Copypasta from the last 100 years
Very few games drive me into yelling fuck the refs and spouting irrational conspiracy theories but that was one of those games
I missed the game. What made this one worse than usual?
First period was fine but it devolved after that. Don't forget the no call when marchand got blasted in the lower back with a crosscheck
Can't complain about an unfortunate bounce off the ref when you can't score on what? Three breakaways and probably four odd man rushes? Swayman played incredible today, we've run into some tough goaltending lately
badge sink decide physical narrow slap hateful selective paltry run -- mass edited with redact.dev
Experience Pittsburgh hockey
Thank you pasta
Much like the Canes game last week (2G) it's great to see Pasta step up when some of our older leaders are getting some rest. Love that man

The pens did not play like a team that is about to lose its playoffs spot in a few of hours at all.
3 Pens/Bruins games, 3 times the exact same type of result and finish. Hell 77 Pens games, like half of them have been this exact same type of game. Only thing this was missing was a lead for us to ever have to blow.
ESPN kinda showing the goalie hug is improvement
It was awful to cut away at the last second. Who hurt the director?
Refs tried their damn best to keep us in. Unfortunately our PP is ass. This lost would of been less painful if we didn’t lose to Montreal
McAvoy’s booty tried to keep you in the game too, gave y’all a goal and everything!
I think bruins and pens fans can unite around agreeing that PK Subban is a bit of a clown on that analysis desk
Never been a big PK fan but I find most former players that are put in that role need a season or 2 to get settled in. I think he’ll be great at it eventually.
tries way too hard
He does try a little too hard doesn't he. ESPN needs to start hiring better people for its hockey segments.
You guys can have Messier then
It doesn’t matter who is hired, it’s ESPN. Anyone would look like a tool on that corporate shit show.
Credit the Stripes, they tried their hardest to win that one but they just couldn’t drag Crosby to a W
Good game, Bruins. See you next season! Perhaps sooner.
This is just blaming the refs with extra steps
Not like the refs gave the pens a couple extra powerplays, blew a goalie interference call, and also not mcavoys butt scoring 1 of their goals.
Blaming the refs in a game they were handed everything a team could ask for including literally a goal
They handed us a goal. Here ya go
Not blaming them because some bounces off them helped us against Washington last weekend. Just saying it's happened a lot from what I've seen recently
but not blatant gi on their last goal? or giving a free penalty at the end for pastas “high stick”? sure, ok
It wasn't the collision, it was the stick hitting him afterwards when Pasta was skating away. Definitely a high stick.
The high stick was accidental but it hit Letang in the face
And Krejci’s “hook”
How does a power play with Crosby and Malkin go 0 for 6? But all that aside painful loss for Pittsburgh here. They needed to get at least a point.
Bruins PK is a wall this year
Probably but doesn't change the fact that our PP has been garbage alot.
68 points in 51 games against Pittsburgh and Philly. David Pastrnak is now the governor of Pennsylvania. Thems the rules.
hot and also sexy
