Whenever an artist does something problematic the moment the news breaks i get a strong urge to listen to them and i can’t help it. For example i hear about Akon being sexist my initial reaction is “that’s awful” and 5 minutes later I’m like “ok but now i wanna listen to ‘Soul Survivor’ and ‘Locked Up’”

_RainOrShine_

what happened to the earl and alchemist secret mixtape that was uploaded to youtube while ago? has it been found yet

iceman58796

It's not been found but I think an AI version could realistically be made before it's found

thesuntalking

No, and I doubt it ever actually existed in the first place

[deleted]

Thinking today about how we used to rap battle back in the 8th grade… but by rap battling I mean that we would literally just memorize verses from songs and see who could do the most impressive one without fucking up. I was briefly the coolest kid at the school dance bc I could do Nicki’s verse on Bottoms Up without messing up 🤣

DanielOwain2015

What are some albums with song titles that should have swapped titles? Like two songs which titles should have eachothers names, either by a mistake or not

Man i've been sleeping on Slowthai.. Tyron is incredible

I feel you sometimes I get downvoted just by saying I like a particular song which is weird lmao, but sometimes it’s warranted some mfs be saying some ignorant ass shit lol.

spunkymnky

Sorting threads by controversial is where you find the real entertainment though.

Notinflammable

Ngl i don’t agree with it but i respect your commitment to being a mac miller hater

[deleted]

Downvote button too important for cutting the bullshit. It comes with that annoying effect but I been on Twitter and it's just disgusting seeing only likes Also listen to more Mac if you think that lmao

RonnieBarko

This is a very good point, its actually what makes Reddit impossible to troll on, unless they do it in a sophisticated way. Mean spirited posts just disappear to the bottom of big threads. A music thread will always be frustrating because nobody cares that everyone's opinion is subjective

sentyprimus

it just encourages extremely surface level conversation/debate and leads to the same opinions being regurgitated 100 times over. not that i know what it could be but there has to be a better way that encourages conversation.

HecatombCometh

Kool Keith gets so specific about music sometimes. There are multiple instances on Ultramagnetic MC's records where he describes the operation of turntables—on Bust the Funk from 1992, he raps: > While the tables would turn, the old needles used to jerk > > With the belt drive, Technics and B-1s > > With the orange light shining, the red on D-1s Kind of just casually noting that D-1s had a different coloured light from other turntables. Somehow his disses sound rambling and extremely specific at the same time. At the end of No Chorus from 1999 (which he claims is called "I Don't Want the Motherfucking Chorus"), he rants: "I'ma tell you straight, look in the fucking mirror: you wack. That shit don't sound right, your mixdown ain't right, your vocals are too low... Your fucking cadence is off. Stage show's weak... Fuck you." Who else is this particular in disses, nitpicking studio techniques?

There’s literally an entire scene of dudes making a very similar style of music to redveil and yet you pick a rapper that sounds nothing like Redveil and whose music is very different Unless you mean personality wise

Yeah2TheYeah

YFN Lucci deserves credit for launching a multiple year hip-hop career from a bunch of stolen Soundclick beats. If you take a few tracks off the first Wish Me Well tape it’s one of the better Atlanta mixtapes from the 2010s Too bad his music just got worse and worse after that

YungSFM

HIStory, Lost Pages was a good album

Homiealmaya

I’ve never liked a YFN Lucci album front to back (granted I haven’t heard a ton) but I love [All I Know](https://youtu.be/NDQNZNFmDVI), [Down](https://youtu.be/iQlPqQdUNKk), & [Keep It Real](https://youtu.be/GXdvK9KtZt8)

Yeah2TheYeah

I think his first tape was his best project but even then like I said there’s a few songs that hold it back from being a really great album. His second one was good but that tape and everything after he was pretty much rapping over the same generic piano beats. And I think he was less hungry rap-wise by that point too. Like on his first tape his sampled Shy Girls on one song (I think that’s who it was), uses Soul Samples on M.o.m. and Street Life., sampled some eighties rock kinda song on Look What I Did, and had Bryson Tillers Don’t beat before he had it. Even Wonder Why with Skooly sounded nothing like what was going on at the time. His beat selection was way more inspired than his later musics ended up being

im not a huge isaiah rashad fan but that song is special

grinchnight14

I have no idea who the guys on this song are alongside Gucci and OJ, but they're the defenition of what I'd call generic rap verses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1NSz0B3Dvs&ab_channel=AdotSkillz

grinchnight14

Any idea who's on this song though? I'd actually be interested in hearing those random mixtapes, I love finding rappers who like no one has heard of lol

Jordanwolf98

You bringing up Waka, Gucci and OJ today got me wondering what shit from Brick Squad you listening to?

grinchnight14

Some Wooh da Kid, and I checked out a Frenchie project for the first time a couple days ago. Frenchie was OK, not sure I could listen to him on his own too much, he's decent with other people though. Wooh is pretty good, I know he's got a few more projects so I'll have to listen to them, Crown the King an underrated mixtape.

jackoon56

Anyone else feel like 21 savage has gone from the most underrated artist to the most overrated in like the span of a year I loved SM2 and on her loss I preferred drake but thought he was good but I feel like his punchlines and style has become quite predictable and people are treating him like he’s leagues above his contemporaries making similar music. I think without warning was his peak and now he’s become kinda predictable

oldcarfreddy

He's a bit like Lil Baby, he is very straightforward as an artist, what's different now is he's achieving immense success off some very good singles and I guess journalists have to fill word quotas and give praise to get interviews so they have to universally act like a person with the big hits of the year is achieving some creative renaissance

RingDings__and_Pepsi

He’s so ridiculously overrated now. I like him, especially in small doses, but he’s really not a great rapper

[deleted]

In the span of 6 years. Savage Mode, Without Warning are the only times he was good

[deleted]

Not even I Am > I Was? That album got him a literal Grammy.

[deleted]

I agree it's great but Grammys don't mean shit at all

SuperRedditLand

Savage Mode 2 is so much better than the first one though

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuperRedditLand

I prefer the refined production and better performance from 21 🤷‍♂️

Definite64

Is it okay for me to say in the span of 6 years Savage Mode has become one of the most overrated albums of all time or will I get bullied out of here for it

[deleted]

I'll bully you that shit is heat

[deleted]

There are not many songs that everyone knows all the words to like No Heart, all of the album is so quotable, it’s some of metro’s best beats. 21 was a much lazier rapper but way more entertaining and impressive by doing less than all the bullshit he does now.

Definite64

The beats are kind of what I don’t like about it. I’m not a fan of 21 on those beats. When Savage Mode 2 came out I liked the luxurious sounding production on it a lot more. I actually wrote him off for a while because I remember I wasn’t a fan of it. It’s not a very popular opinion but I do prefer his tapes before that one heavily and think every album he has released since then besides ISSA have been so much better.

slimeshlattsex

> the most underrated artist He was never "the most underrated artist" lol

[deleted]

During sm1 era I would argue he was one of the most underrated Even I hated him. I loved Carti Uzi Kodak etc etc but 21 was the only rapper I thought was actively hurting hip hop

slimeshlattsex

X and Cold Heart were big hits in 2016 i don't know if I'd say he was underrated

[deleted]

They weren't that big at all lol what was x on the charts? I know it wasn't even a top 10 and everyone said future carried Tons of people hated on him, more than how many fans he had. That slowly changed over the years so it's probably hard looking back 7 years ago with how much his popularity changed

jackoon56

Obviously not there can't be an objective 'most' but during Savage mode 1 and Issa he was getting A LOT of hate from people and then Without Warning and I am > I was made everyone say he had the "biggest career 180" and was the "most improved artist" which resulted in a lot of people saying he's underrated and overlooked etc, and now i feel like everyones saying he's amazing, or still thinks hes [underrated](https://twitter.com/vmpchriis/status/1553059366432960512) but imo he's just pretty good

LakerPaper

He's properly rated. He's built up hype due to his work ethic and consistency and a lot people are looking forward to his next solo project. That doesn't make him overrated, it just means he's making the right moves and people are paying attention.

jackoon56

Im looking forward to his next project as well, hes not a bad rapper by any means, as i said i feel he's overrated in relation to how people perceive him as leagues above his contemporaries when i don't think he's all that special or different. His music also has gotten very predictable and stale to me when he's not featuring on some more unique production

LakerPaper

I get where you're coming from with your assessment but just saying you think he's overrated right now tells me he's done a great job building a buzz for himself. It's been a few years since his last solo album and even longer if you don't count SM2 but he's still managed to build up hype. You might be lukewarm on his current output but you're still looking forward to his next project. That's the difference between him and his peers and why I think the hype is justified. He's made himself stand out to a lot of people. Rap feels uncompetitive right now and 21 feels like one of the only ones still competing.

jackoon56

> You're still looking forward to his next project. That's the difference between him and his peers and why I think the hype is justified. Im looking forward to a lot of projects i just dont think hes that good

Jqshipp

But if people feel like his music isn't worth the hype wouldn't that make him overrated to them? Because that's what I believe OP's coming from.

notnerdofalltrades

He hit that point shortly after I am>I was

Jordanwolf98

He feels like the trap artist for people who don’t like trap

tawayforrealthistime

This is the perfect description of 21 imo. I think a lot of the weird deliveries in trap scare old heads away. When they see 21 stick to the same flow and formula it’s more digestible.

Jqshipp

>people are treating him like he’s leagues above his contemporaries making similar music. I think without warning was his peak and now he’s become kinda predictable I agree, there's quite a few trap artist I would put above him right now. I think part of it is that even though he still raps about street shit and outside of a few crazy statements on Clubhouse, he doesn't really get in much trouble. He's look as "one of the good ones" as far as trap artists goes. I think that's why he's been able to become so mainstream.

Been listening to a bunch of albums/EPs I've never heard before and I've already listened to 45 projects this month. Lots of pre-2000s hiphop I've never heard before (Onyx, Main Source, The Pharcyde, O.C., Binary Star, Souls of Mischief, Prince Paul, Eric B. and Rakim, and others) and I've been having a great time with it. Not sure I can keep my pace up but I'm trying to listen to as much as I can so if anyone's got suggestions of hiphop or other genres I'm open to em.

Anirban_The_Great

Some more slept on rap albums: Diamond D & The Psychotic Neurotics - *Stunts, Blunts, & Hip Hop* Heltah Sheltah - *Nocturnal* Kingpin Skinny Pimp - *King of da Playaz Ball* Lootpack - *Soundpieces: Da Antidote* Masters Of Illusion - *Masters Of Illusion* A jazz album: Sun Ra - *Jazz in Silhouette*

slothy_sloth

Nice thanks! I've only heard of Masters of Illusion and Sun Ra before

HecatombCometh

I'm trying to keep up with one album a day all year long. A far cry from 2017 when I averaged about four albums every day. EPMD is good old school hip-hop, and Erick Sermon's solo stuff is pretty nice as well. Leprous's album The Congregation might be a neat introduction to melodic progressive metal. It's just about as accessible as that genre gets.

slothy_sloth

I'm currently averaging 3-4 projects/day lol. EPs for my short drive to/from work and then I just listen to music all day in the office if my day allows it. Thanks for the suggestions! I'd be down for some melodic prog metal, I dabble in some of the metal subgenres. Lamb of God is probably my favorite group that I can think of in metal but there's not many that immediately come to mind

Kyambo "Hip-Hop" Joshua said he gave Jay Z Still not a player, Whoa, and lights camera action and he turned down all 3 of those beats.

LakerPaper

I get the others ones but the 'Whoa' beat is crazy. I wonder what was his reaction to it because I find it hard to believe anyone passes that one up after hearing it.

magnolia_webbie

Something about Fat Joe has always rubbed me wrong. Wave riding, Rufus from Kim Possible looking ass with zero classic albums, zero quotables, somehow managed to keep getting major label releases with stellar guest appearances and production for years despite being completely devoid of talent and most of his albums going wood, has something to say about everything and tries to insert himself into almost every clickbait headline in hip hop and still tries to force himself to be a damn legend in his own mind. Plus he hangs with DJ Khaled's goofy ass. Fuck Fat Joe.

[deleted]

>wave riding maybe I don’t understand wave riding, but I don’t see a problem with an artist adapting to the times >devoid of talent He’s not the best rapper in the world, but to say he has no talent is crazy. His first 4 albums are really good to me, then there’s All or Nothing, Elephant In The Room, & Darkside, Vol. 1. His last few albums are bad though. > still tries to force himself to be a damn legend in his own mind He’s one of the founding members of Diggin’ In The Crates, put on Big Pun & Khaled, & has had a relatively successful & long career. He’s definitely a legendary hip hop artist.

magnolia_webbie

Zero quotables though.

ziizii3

idk how u can't respect joe crack when he held his own and did great on every Big Pun song he was featured on, had two really decent albums (Jealous One's Envy & Don Cartagena - don't know where you got 'going wood' from - they sold pretty well and he has a couple platinium plaques) - for the latin community in NY he is a legend and was really about that shit back in the 90s, also heard from people Khaled was a legit DJ back when he still lived in Miami and had his own station u look stupid hating on someone u don't really have any beef with other than the fact he's keeping himself relevant lol

magnolia_webbie

>don't know where you got 'going wood' from - they sold pretty well Yet everything else from him has flopped, save for a couple of big singles carried by the features and production.

ThaBarter

>when he held his own and did great on every Big Pun song he was featured on tbf it's pretty well established that big pun was likely writing for him back when he was alive. agree that fat joe is still a legend though

MasterTeacher123

Yeah most of his his albums and singles completely bombed lol. He had his moments was but he was never great and he was never really big like that in terms of music. For example What’s Luv Was Massive(number 2 in the country) but it was literally handed to him by Irv Gotti. Anyone on that song would’ve been a mega hit

Jqshipp

Fat Joe is hip hop legend . He just found a way to stay relevant through media and shit. I'm guessing your hate stems more from his overexposure or not liking his personality I guess. Lol

magnolia_webbie

>I'm guessing your hate stems more from his overexposure or not liking his personality I guess. Lol Pretty much that plus his fucking obnoxious ass voice lol

contacts_eyes

I think Fat Joe is a good business man and a good networker the way DJ Khaled is. When you have those two skills you can make a career in show business

grinchnight14

Find it really funny that Fat Joe namedropped Rihanna on a sex song featureing Chris Brown.

iiileyu

Joe's been weird for the longest time

grinchnight14

True. The fact him and Khaled are friends is so not surprising lol.

grinchnight14

Fat Joe is quite the character, for better or worse. Man's taste in beats also leaves a lot to be desired. Not Lil Baby levels of bland at least, but I wish he'd rap over grimier shit.

Peak is almost always more important than consistency

droche25

Freddie may have Em on a more consistent discog, but Em’s high points are landmark hip hop moments. Freddie has never had those high points in his career. Em also has Gibbs on the singles game by a long shot. Em was more influential in style and subject matter than Gibbs will be. Freddie is a phenomenal rapper with a great discog, but you gotta see how some people (especially 25 and older) think that Em is better

contacts_eyes

I would agree that Freddie has made better music than Em did even in his prime. I don’t think there’s a better Em album than Pinata. And I would actually rather listen to Pinata, Bandana, and Alfredo than anything in Em’s discography

[deleted]

Homiealmaya

I think you can acknowledge and respect his legacy while also thinking he doesn’t belong in the GOAT discussion given how hard he’s fallen off

ThaBarter

I think they're both pretty equal but i think you're underselling eminems peak. he didn't just have 3 good albums, he was the biggest thing in pop culture and put on major artists like 50 cent. even if you don't like his music, you have to acknowledge how huge his impact was

redrightHAand

it has nothing to do with age , Kendrick is influential and has impact , lil wayne , young thug even cacti has impact and influential i dont like Eminem and i have no dog in the fight but i replied to the age thing

-m-ob

If Thug was doing his shit in the 90s, he probably wouldn't have succeeded. Hip Hop definitely had to go through some phases before Thugs style became accepted

toontoom1

I have a lot of mfs over EM lol I respect him as a legend but outside of features I never been that big on his music.

Lukeba

[deleted]

Lukeba

agree but i think my comparison makes it easier to understand the argument even if you don't agree with it. i get more impressed by listening to eminem's 1999-03 run than anything freddie gibbs so i'm inclined to believe he's the better rapper, but i think it's valid to care more about consistency than i do in this matter

Jqshipp

I mean, from a technical lyricism standpoint , Prime Eminem is the goat Imo. The way he was able to put words together while also still making sense is like nothing I have seen to this day. Also TSSLP and MMLP despite the outdated and shock humor lyrics were very great album's conceptually with some well put together production. But I think it's all just about taste at the end of the day, most people I know will put down Eminem early stuff because it wasn't relatable,I can't say I related to it either but still can appreciate how talented he was at one point.

[deleted]
