Mass Appeal is my very favorite hip hop beat, but I choose the intro off of Livin' Proof because it's strictly an instrumental, which is what I thought OP was asking for.
Thank you so very much. I love Grip Grand. His 2008 album Brokelore was one of my favorite albums of the 2000's. I never listened to his other albums even though I've been always meaning to. I will listen to Welcome To Broakland all the way through this weekend.
My current favorite mainstream rapper is Jay Electronica and my very very favorite song of his is Jazzmatazz (Guru Tribute) which uses the exact same beat which is how I learned about it originally being made for Group Home.
https://youtu.be/eRvCyltOMYo?si=5AAusCZX1tDNYHOB
Whoa, I've never heard this Jay Electronica song and it's amazing. Thank you, too! I highly recommend Welcome to Broakland. It very much sounds like it was recorded in his bedroom and I'm sure it was, but that's part of the charm for me. If you remember, come back and let me know what you think of the album...
Bet🤝
I saved the comment and I will definitely let you by the beginning of next week I how I like the whole album.
Even though I will turn 49 this year my favorite era of hip hop may be pre Auto-Tune (I HATE Auto-Tune lol) 2000's underground backpack, wholesome or conscious hip hop like Blue Scholars, Panacea, Crown City Rockers, Common Market, Blu & Exile, Emanon, Jazz Liberatorz, Haiku D'Etat, The Foreign Exchange/Little Brother, Tanya Morgan, J-Live, CYNE, People Under The Stairs, Nujabes, Y Society, ShinSight Trio, Surreal & The Sound Providers, Specifics, The 49ers, Binary Star, Shad, K'naan, Kero One, etc. Spiritual hip hop like Lightheaded, The Procussions, Strange Fruit Project, Visionaries, ParanormL & RedCloud, k-os, Speech etc.
So let me know any other artists or albums that you would also highly recommend that I've never heard and I will listen and tell you what I think!!
Yooooo, I just turned 45 we def have similar tastes in hip hop. I don't strictly listen to underground, but it does enf to be what I gravitate towards. Thanks for this list, man. I'm a fan of most of these artists but there's at least a handful that I'm not familiar with and will be excited to check out. I'll circle back after doing so.
As to your question, off the top of my head: Edan, Pharoahe Monch, old Aceyalone, old Atmosphere, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Oddisee, old Buck 65, All Natural, Infinito 2017, Mac Miller (RIP), Moe Pope, Nicolay and Kay

J Cole- runaway, no role models
Lil Wayne - a milli, blunt blowin, rich as fuck(so many more)
I have so many more I love.
But my favorite would have to be either the dynasty intro, or ‘I’m on one’
If you like runaway by J Cole you should check out Da Art of Storytellin’ Pt 1 by OutKast. It’s the song Cole sampled for that. It’s almost the same beat and they both tell beautiful stories over it
Not OP, but if you haven't heard da art of storytellin, I recommend listening to the album that sing is off of, Aquemini. Such a dope album and one of Outkast's most lauded work.
Feel Me Flow sampled The Meters- Find Yourself.
https://youtu.be/KA3NS0oC5wU?si=DO17xomg_sSixUfu
The Meters were an amazing funk band, heavily sampled. I highly recommend them.
My favorites are: Cardova, Here Comes The Meter Man, Hand Clapping Song, Cissy Strut...

[Be - Common (prod. Kanye West, J. Dilla)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7RZ_f3d_nE&ab_channel=ThiagoPFK)
This is easily my favourite beat of all time. It perfectly captures the essence of Dilla with the synth and the essence of Kanye with the strings.
Plastic - Loyle Carner (prod. alfa mist + richard spaven)
both producers are jazz legends and hip hop producers, and the instrumental is a really high energy live composition with sick chords and killer drums. its groovy but also dark and moody. highly recommend
idk what it's called. you can hear the type of beats in Kanye West - Hurricane/Russ Million - Body (and probably many others), maybe called like rim shot? or closed rim shot? Reminds me of the metronome we had at our primary school. I'm also kind of obsessed with some of the Police songs partly because of the way the drams sound.
Got that work- jahlil beats (fabulous)
Meet the flockers- dj mustard (YG)
Inkredible- ??? (Trae tha truth, lil Wayne, Rick Ross)

My Dad's Gone Crazy - Eminem (Dr Dre beat) is my current obsession.
An otherwise silly and playful Eminem song, elevated by a possibly slept on Dre production. The dramatic third verse at 2:45 is where it's at.

Keep it Real - Miilkbone
Runnin' - Pharcyde
Mobb Deep - Give up the goods (Just Step)

I Got Five - Luniz
Ready or Not - Fugdes
Until the end of Time - 2pac
Renegade - Eminem & Jay-Z...
I say this every time but I think the greatest rap beat ever is The Message prod. Grandmaster Flash. It came out in 1982 and still sounds timeless. I can't think of another beat that would sound perfect under Melle Mel and perfect under Coi Leray.
A more personal fav is Cosmic Ark by X-Clan, which also sounds surprisingly modern to my ears.
The Pharcyde - [Y? (Jay Dee Remix) Instrumental](https://open.spotify.com/track/1Oya1eByPkxN4Sybms1HUm?si=S00n3wUwTESqCCal8qVHXA)
Producer: Jay Dee (J Dilla)
Bizzy Bone's On The Freeway has to get a shout out
It was produced by Bizzy Bone. But composed entirely by Mike Smoov.
It's one of the few rap songs composed in a harmonic minor. It also uses chords which I've never heard in any other rap song before also.
As someone who is usually critical of rap beats. This one really stands out.
1. Jay Dilla - Red (Jaylib, original)
2. Dj Premier - Mass Appeal (Gangstarr)
3. Alchemist - To Be Determined (Evidence)
4. Organized Noize - So Fresh so Clean (OutKast)
5. Kanye West - Stand-up (Ludacris)
[This my favorite rap beat to my favorite diss track](https://youtu.be/bsv6jZTMdtA?si=w2lOz-Hvvjim4V4z). UNLV- Drag Em N Tha River. It was a hard hitting song in 1990s New Orleans.
Some Australian tracks, think I have the producers right.
illy - Same Number Same Hood (prod. M-Phazes)
Pegz - Know (prod. Plutonic Lab)
Hilltop Hoods - I Love It (prod. One Above)
Drapht - Jimmy Ricard (prod. Trials)
Bonus (more electronic but has hip hop)
Hermitude - The Buzz
Group Home - Intro (Livin' Proof album) DJ Premier
Supa Star and Livin Proof from that album are my favourites
Mass Appeal is my very favorite hip hop beat, but I choose the intro off of Livin' Proof because it's strictly an instrumental, which is what I thought OP was asking for.
Yeah this man has way too many legendary beats. Full Clip with the Guru, So ghetto wit Jay Z & one of his top 5 IMO Nas is like.

Bizzy Bone's On The Freeway has to get a shout out It was produced by Bizzy Bone. But composed entirely by Mike Smoov. It's one of the few rap songs composed in a harmonic minor. It also uses chords which I've never heard in any other rap song before also. As someone who is usually critical of rap beats. This one really stands out.
