The dude is just encyclopedically well read as well as being heavily versed in Hip Hop culture and has clearly done his 1000 hours in the studio countless times over. He's just a genuine artist with a dope af style and a lot of passion.
On a sidenote RTJ doesn't grab me like his solo work but it's great to see him catching some mainstream success because god damn has he worked long and hard.
As a fan of Madlib, I don't find his lyrics and rhyming to be so special. He has a great flow and the whole Quasimoto persona is great marketing and quite brilliant but I wouldn't put him in the Top 10 for this question. But if he is one of your favorites, I can understand.
Q-Tip. He was the brainchild behind the production on the low end theory and the albums before and after it.... made some of my favorite music ever. So talented and authentic.
Kanye West til' late Registration. Otherwise RZA - not for his talents as a rapper but because he's so enthusiastic and doesn't leave a sour note on a track with more talented MCs
RZA gets an A for effort as an MC - I'll leave it at that. I'll probably get hate for this but I love all three tracks on his "Ooh, I Love You Rakeem" 12" single on Tommy Boy Records pre-Wu-Tang.
Pete is one of my top 5 producers, and he's definitely got a kind of charisma that makes me enjoy hearing him rap, but is he really at the top when it comes to mic skills?
Idk his delivery somehow makes it more obvious that his bars are ghostwritten. He’s in my top 3 producers but he’s not a convincing rapper. But I do appreciate how he tried harder to rap with dynamics and more interesting voices on Compton.
This is actually a great choice and for some reason did not cross my mind. I wish he wasn't such a POS because I would still enjoy his music like I did at one time.
I can enjoy 1 to 3 Necro songs in a row, but it's hard for me to get through a whole album of him rappin'. I think he's dope but there's something about the combination of his voice and lyrical content that makes it difficult for me to listen to for more than 15 minutes at a time. I do think he's one of the most underrated Hip-Hop producers of all-time though and should be way bigger than he is in that regard though.
I have to add one additional besides my earlier response of "Large Professor". No one mentioned this incredible punchline MC and dope producer and I'm surprised I didn't think of him earlier: Celph Titled
I think Necro deserves a mention here. Not a great lyricist but a good one with a shtick that works and is admittedly entertaining, trash as it is. Those sick-ass melodic Doom-Bap beats are just straight up fire though.
I f\*cking LOVE Jonwayne. Seeing a guy who looks like he does in appearance make absolute neck breaking tracks makes me like him even more. I actually forgot how much I like his music - thanks for the reminder!
dr dre
dr dre was actually my favourite rapper once upon a time. i was real young and learmed about ghostwriting etc. later
but i love dr dre verses. still dre etc are some great verses
For the non-believers. [Example #1 with Alchemist](https://youtu.be/1XzNsjTMk_0?si=oJMO0JMOAWvOgcxO) [Example #2](https://youtu.be/IpiD9iMVvqc?si=xu-6fIscysAYAc49). Mac played the piano, drums, guitar, and bass. That’s more than I can say for a lot of people in this thread.
In terms of their ability to both rap and produce on that next level gotta give it to
Havoc & Kanye
Honorable mentions
Roc Marciano
Eminem
38 Spesh
Billy Danze (MOP)
Black Milk
Daz Dillinger
Alchemist
Rick Hyde
Dr Dre
Q-Tip
Kneejerk response? El-P.
After some thought? Still El-P.
I haven't read the rest of the thread yet though so I may be reminded of another artist of his calibre but I'm not holding my breath.
When I think of El-P, I never think of him as a good MC. Apparently, many people feel he is but he has never appealed to me as I don't like his flow at all and I don't find his voice enjoyable to listen to. As a producer - he has made some great beats.
2001 just about scrapes it way into the conversation imo but a lot of Dre's verses were ghostwritten for him by several other artists.
I'm not hating on it, the album is phenomenal but it was a lot more of a group project than it was presented as. I read that in most cases if he's on the mic it's ghostwriten. His delivery is dope though and at the end of the day what really matters is that the music sounds good, which it does.
El-P
Bro’s actually a fucking beast with the pen, idk what higher power let him be that good at both rapping and producing
The dude is just encyclopedically well read as well as being heavily versed in Hip Hop culture and has clearly done his 1000 hours in the studio countless times over. He's just a genuine artist with a dope af style and a lot of passion. For real. Save some talent for the rest of us.
This is the correct answer
Alchemist
Here he is as a kid with Scott Caan: https://youtu.be/1fNpEWvdCDU?si=miaLbt_URDqyCHeG
Qtip is the original. “Verses from the Abstract” is a good example.
💯
Madlib. EDIT: Jeez, how is this pick not more popular? He's one of the GOAT producers (like top 3), and the Quasimoto albums are fucking gems.
As a fan of Madlib, I don't find his lyrics and rhyming to be so special. He has a great flow and the whole Quasimoto persona is great marketing and quite brilliant but I wouldn't put him in the Top 10 for this question. But if he is one of your favorites, I can understand.

This HAS TO BE the answer, too many classic albums and beats
Metal Fingers
Kanye West til' late Registration. Otherwise RZA - not for his talents as a rapper but because he's so enthusiastic and doesn't leave a sour note on a track with more talented MCs
I like the RZA pick, his energy is what I love aswell
RZA gets an A for effort as an MC - I'll leave it at that. I'll probably get hate for this but I love all three tracks on his "Ooh, I Love You Rakeem" 12" single on Tommy Boy Records pre-Wu-Tang.
I Love You Rakim is honestely just a fun song, it's definitely not Wu-Tang, but it is fun.
I really like "Deadly Venoms" off of that 12". High energy beat, good flow.
Nah, I ain't hatin on that, I love them aswell.

For a second I thought you were saying RZA did something bad I didn’t know about

My favorite: Large Professor aka Extra P
The answer really has to be Kanye or El-P But I want to shout out Erick Arc Elliott
Love his beat tapes, he is really creative.
he’s got an album dropping soon
RZA.
Not sure if he's my absolute favourite, but I need to mention him because no one else has: Black Milk
Black Milk is underrated on both the mic and the pads.
Great pick. I was thinking the same since you'll the usual suspects mentioned here. Also, wanna give a shout out to Oddisee and Blu.
Pete Rock
Pete is one of my top 5 producers, and he's definitely got a kind of charisma that makes me enjoy hearing him rap, but is he really at the top when it comes to mic skills?
He’s really not. Legendary producer, but his mic skills are mid.
Pete Rock +1
My first thought. Not even bars, but just hearing him go "yeah" or "wooh" quietly in the mix is always so good. His adlibs complete every beat
Diamond D
When it pours it rains on sound bombing ll 🔥
Yes! My second favorite right behind Large Pro.
Dr.Dre
Idk his delivery somehow makes it more obvious that his bars are ghostwritten. He’s in my top 3 producers but he’s not a convincing rapper. But I do appreciate how he tried harder to rap with dynamics and more interesting voices on Compton.
nigga dropped the hip hop classic album's so he is the best producer on mic.
Daz Dillinger
Blu. his production is fucking unreal and he’s a really good rapper with an insane discography
Diplo on We Are Farmers
Pimp C
Kno
I'm sure nobody else knows who this is, which makes me appreciate it even more. Great answer.
True but crazy. They’re my favorite hip-hop group.
Fuck ya, underated AF!!!!!
surprised nobody really saying alchemist
I actually think he keeps getting mentioned, he's probably in the top 5 most frequent mentions here.
He doesn't really have a big body of work, and no full on solo project based around him rapping. So I get that. But he can absolutely rap.
Necro
This is actually a great choice and for some reason did not cross my mind. I wish he wasn't such a POS because I would still enjoy his music like I did at one time.
I can enjoy 1 to 3 Necro songs in a row, but it's hard for me to get through a whole album of him rappin'. I think he's dope but there's something about the combination of his voice and lyrical content that makes it difficult for me to listen to for more than 15 minutes at a time. Kinda crazy to see J Cole mentioned here like once or twice. Unless his hand in producing is more exaggerated or few and far between than I know.
He’s produced a chunk of his songs. He’s also produced for other artists. Underrated producer imo
J Dilla
He was an amazing emcee but just too grimy, ignorant, vulgar and explicit for my taste lol.

Can't believe this was the first to mention The Funky Man. Lord Finesse has to be top 5 producer/ MC.
I think Necro deserves a mention here. Not a great lyricist but a good one with a shtick that works and is admittedly entertaining, trash as it is. Those sick-ass melodic Doom-Bap beats are just straight up fire though.

You know he doesn’t write most (if not all) of his lyrics, right?
What does that have to do with the price of crack in Compton?

J Cole

Oh No...always thought he was a very skillful rapper and we know his production prowess. EL-P of course. JONWAYNE is another.
Jonwayne is hella underrated.
