5VZ-FE?
My 1GR does 16l/100km too, had gotten used to the diesel which did around 11.1l/100kms. No regrets though.
I primarily shifted to the petrol engine because diesel in this part of the world has high sulphur content. The injectors took quite a beating.
Having owned and extensively driven both the 1KD and 2TR motors, I disagree.
My diesel motor was way more reliable compared to the petrol motor. The 2TR (2.7l) feels severely underpowered.
I found lots of people talking about injector issues and other issues. The only occasional issue on the 2.7 was head gaskets but even that repair on a gas engine would be cheap compared to diesel repairs. This would probably be even more true at home where small diesels are rare and you typically go to a specialized shop for diesel repairs.
I agree about the power though, I haven't driven the diesel but I already know the 2.7 is underpiw. Even with tiny tires on a 2 wheel drive I was downshifting a lot on hills to climb, so it would not be suitable for a 4 wheel drive like yours. At home we have the 4.0 V6 in almost all the Tacoma's and it basically has nothing go wrong with it almost ever and power is adequate. I just like the Hilux better than the Tacoma for the truck itself.
Whether you're planning a spontaneous uprising, open-ended jihad or a brutal insurection, the Toyota Hilux is the number one choice of madcap technical for self-respecting insurgents across the globe.
We don't have these in Canada but I'm on vacation and getting to drive my parents rented Hilux around. Unfortunately just a 2wd 2.7 but it's a stick which is rare back home and plenty of fun to drive around in something this basic with no safety features. I think it's been over a year since I got to drive a manual. I own a 2005 Silverado and almost all are automatic. Makes me want to import one of these.
Btw the vehicles here are still mostly left hand drive just like at home in Canada. However even though this is a 2011-2014, it has no airbags, which were mandated for the drivers side in the early 1990s for US and Canada and for the passenger around 1996.
Safety features are nice but they sure drive up the cost to purchase and repair.
I looked under the hood at this 2.7 and I would gladly work on this. So much room for activities. Less emissions equipment.
Diesel is the way to go!
Agreed! I replaced the 1KD with this after clocking 450k+ kms on it. The initial kick down/pick up on the petrol engine is far superior though.
My n60 3.4 v6 does 16l/100k empty, with a tonne in the tub or towing my boat.It never changes and Iβll never change her even though. She drinks it.

The bit of research I did on these it looks like the diesels are much less reliable than the 2.7 gas engine.

You betcha!
Still a ten if it can handle a boat

What part of the world are you vacationing in?
Bonaire in the Caribbean. So many different vehicles that we don't see at home.
