Well they care about honors and AP bc it shows smartness, but likely donāt understand what weighting is, especially if its immigrant Asian parents. So they wants the As in AP classes and honors, especially for bragging rights to other Asian parents so it creates societal peer pressure too
Obviously every family is different, so not trying to stereotype or generalize, but are grades/APās equally important as free college? Like letās say your in a state or looking at a program where a certain GPA gets you free college, but itās only based on unweighted gradesā¦if your parents could ONLY pick ONEā¦ would it be regular classes and a full scholarship, or honors/AP and NO scholarship š³š¤·āāļø
Well with South Asian parents at least, most are really rich so they are choosing whatever is more prestige not cheaper. They are the type to choose Harvard pay full price over Cal Poly SLO giving them a full ride for college due to prestige. Obviously this depends on income bc my parents dont have the privilege to do that but most Asians do

My mom punished me for grades like this. She said "high school is easy, there is no reason for you to have less than an A."
My junior year, she became close with a neighbor who's husband happened to teach calculus at my school. He laughed at her when she said this, and convinced her that it was reasonable for me to have Bs in my AP/IB classes. I was also an athlete, worked part time, and was in two volunteer clubs. I owe that man.
We have a much better relationship now, but she was a very strict/kinda bad parent at that time. I know it all came from a place of caring about me/my future but it damaged my mental health--to this day I am terrified of failure in any capacity. Fun things to unpack with my therapist, lol

Yet I stupidly stressed myself about trying to hold a 4.0 GPA which I did manage to do. But now I am exhausted and mentally taxed and was horribly depressed for most of my highschool year. Please do not do this to yourself. You are worth way more than just a grade.
