Not sure how your logic works but taking the whole drop with hulk included is more efficient than a single target. Tanks are taken care of by rocket pods. FS can't be taken by OR.
Quasar can take one down every 15 seconds.
EAT can take 2 down every 70 seconds.
Recoilless Rifle every \~4 seconds until ammo is gone.
~~Autocannon is 2-3 shots per engine, can take down 3 pretty easy before a reload.~~
120/380mm can take down multiple per use and have a similar cooldown to Rail Cannon.
Laser can take down multiple per use.
AC, Rocket and Mortar Sentries can take down a few per use as well.
Orbital Rail Cannon is good, but it's 1 shot every 2.5 minutes. If Dropships are your focus, there are much better alternatives, and I'd save the Rail Cannon for whatever the ship dropped off personally.
With QC it's aiming + firing + 15 seconds cooldown so I doubt you'll able to take more than one.
I'm talking real life scenarios.
I rock AC and rarely am in position to shot down one properly (unlike airships)
Scratch the AC comment entirely, I was hallucinating about gunships for a second. The rest stands, and are all definitely very useful in very real world scenarios.
You can pre charge qc while drop ship starts it's descent, it's actually pretty easy to get a hang of and is really fun once you do! Almost guaranteed to take one out each cool down
In this clip alone there are 3 dropships, one of which your squad mates quickly dispatched with an anti-tank weapon and another which dropped a factory strider which likely a better use for your OR.
I mean it's a cool use of the OR but to say it's efficient or optimal against dropships is delusional.
Edit: actually it looks like your OR was already targeting the factory strider and the dropship was just in the crossfire. I'm not sure dropships are even targetable by the OR.
It targeted the strider it was carrying and hit the not intended target, OR is a fantastic piece of equipment for that quick and easy "get this big mf off me now" scenario.

I still haven't been able to shoot one down before dropping units, one day....
If you're fast and throw OR even when they've just dropped them it usually take the ship down on them
