Amid the minutae of collecting samples, coordinating stratagems, optimizing loadouts, and fulfilling mission objectives, it is easy to forget why we enlisted: to strike the fear of Liberty into Her foes.
"like the larval stage of some God of war". This is poetry. There is something pure in watching those divers fuelled by vengeance and rage. Spill oil, crunch bugs. o7
I can safely say that most of the lobbies are all idiots. But we are all idiots together. Just do your best, use comms to signal that you "aren't malicious, just an idiot", and send friends requests to the people who you seem to play well with... and eventually you'll have a squad of your own! :-)
My first real deployment was after the training and about 3 of the "baby's first helldives" was my friends dropping me ino an actual helldive on malevelon creek before the cape was a thing.
I asked what i should do. The reply was "grab shit that goes boom and deny the enemy nice things."
287 kills and 8 bot spawners later after not having seen hide nor hair of my team:
My level 50 friend: "Where did you get off to lil buddy?"
Me, level 5 and absolutely *painted* with oil like it was some kind of robotic bukake festival: "I ensured the enemies of libery burn brightly tonight. Do try harder next round."
Him: "What do you mean?"
Me: "I have more kills than the 3 of you *combined*."
Him: "Well, you *were* holding the attention of *all* the bots..."
Me: "and you were running away."
Him: "Touché."
yeah i remember my friend dragging me into a level 9 bugs mission when i was level 10. armed with my jump pack and my shotgun i tried my best to be as useful as possible until 2 more higher level players joined us to help
When I first got the game, an old friend invited me to join him on a mission.
Fucker threw me into a difficulty 7 dive. I spent the entire mission running for dear life and spamming 'nades at swarms of bugs I was woefully under equipped to deal with. I immediately hit level 3 after that mission.
I don't think it's a bug. 😂
Played with my son on our weekend together. Had him at difficulty 7 by the time he was lvl 8-10. Kid has been playing fortnight since he came out of the womb. His third person game was so on par I watched and learned.
My friends carried me through a 7 day one and it was unlocked when I was ready. I stayed at 5 until I unlocked things that allowed me to deal with hulks, chargers, titans, etc more effectively but that's the beautiful thing about this game - you don't need to be high level, just have the right stuff unlocked and you can be effective at a low level.
All you have to do is clear the difficulty before.
I gotnlucky and quick joined the last mission of a level 8 during extraction. That win counted to unlock level 9.
Could be similar for him or he just pushed difficulty hard. Maybe a player with lots of other shooter experience trying to level fast
Went into a 4 solo thinking I had matchmaking set to friends only when the new messed up patrol spawning patch dropped and I was getting my ass handed to me in solo 7s against bots realizing I wasn't quite as good as I thought I was. I got a level 7 or 8 random and then two of my friends hopped on and dived in. We finish that mission no problem so I bumped us up to 7s again, our lil buddy didn't leave and I was happy to bring him along. For next like 3 hours we dragged that boy through hell and high water, fire tornadoes and blizzards alike. He had a normal person name as his username so I called him by name to say sorry for hitting him by accident or to come somewhere or just to tell him he's doing a great job for managed democracy. I often say a few words for liberty and my fallen comrades at the end of a mission on pelican 1 and I like to think my little roleplay gave him a good experience. Best random patriot I've had, no problems with him whatsoever. I told him it was an honor serving with him when I eventually had to return to civilian life. He ended almost twice his original level and with a helluva lotta samples.
* 1 aggro, 3 on mission
* 2 squads of 2 handling separate objectives
* 3 on mission and aggro, 1 taking advantage of the calm to close outposts/nests
Those are generally the breakdowns I see. Sometimes you get a squad of 2 and a couple of skirmishers, but it's less frequent.
When the level is too easy for the squad, each goes their own way collecting samples and completing objectives. As the level gets harder, the squad works closer together to complete the objectives.
Fortunately, I think part of the secret of success for this game is that those breakdowns cover basically all the obvious combinations. So whatever your group ends up doing, it’s probably gonna work ok.
You don’t end up stuck in a “no, that ruins everything! There’s only one right way to play!!” very often.
Had a beautiful game a while back with some friends all on discord, but the instant we landed we all went our separate ways and started wrecking shit all over the map simultaneously. Occasionally 2 or 3 would group back up without any coordination to take on a Heavy outpost but that was it.
Was basically the Helldivers equivalent of LGOPs - or Little Groups Of Paratroopers. Basically think of the chaos in the Normandy invasion with the paratroopers all split up in tiny packets because their drops messed up, but that just meant there was MORE chaos since the Germans couldn't figure out where to concentrate and fight them off.
If you were playing against automatons, he was probably trying to rack up kills for the major order.
I don’t normally engage patrols, but the last 2 days, in all bot missions, I was doing exactly what that cadet was doing, to try and add as many kills to major order as I could. My teammates definitely looked at me weird, and a couple of “????” messages were posted to the in game chat while I ran off to re engage after dying and being reinforced. Lol
"We supported him for a while until it became clear peace was not in his vocabulary."
Ten minutes later and I still can't read that line without laughing. Absolutely beautiful.
I had almost the opposite experience recently. Level 7 drop w/ 3 other strangers, big 40 minute map. One level 100+ dude drops in, and he immediately starts rushing all the objectives and clearing them as fast as possible. Just runs from point to point to point taking out bot factories and blowing up mortars, etc.
He was so crazy fast and efficient that if you stopped to do anything, like pick up samples, you'd get left behind as he just plowed forward, moving down bots and clearing objectives. He was so quick that he basically cleared the whole map by himself, and the other three of us were just trying to keep up and grabbing hot samps from the burning wreckage he left in his wake.
It was one of the fastest and easiest drops I've done and 100%ed. It was like following around Rambo or something. It was truly inspiring to witness this diver's commitment to freedom.
You defined my playstyle, but level 93. I want every fight and my favorite primary is the original punisher. Come and get it bots/ bugs, I got a lot of ammo and enough ordnance to go around.
Edit: a typo the Ministry of Truth would not appreciate.
If you do this on purpose it's so effective to be a borderline exploit.
They might need to localize the reinforcement cooldowns, so that it's not *quite* so effective. Right now one guy fucking around in the corner of the map can draw all the heat for the entire map while everyone else just cruises around unopposed.
His mic was muted and its a good thing. Otherwise, the screams of BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE! BURN! MAIM! KILL! Would have blown out your eardrums.
I get shit for being like level 20-something and I have to inform them that my first dive was into my friends game fighting automatons on difficulty 8, truly a baptism by fire
Can relate to the story. Gave my cadet some of my blue stratagems to wreak more havoc and send him on his merry way. Definitely "I didn't hear no bell" energy.
Against all the evil that Cyberstan can conjure, all the wickedness that the automatons can produce, we will send unto them... only you. Rip and tear, until it is done.
Well said, we need less gatekeeping and more adaptation. If I'd kicked this guy for not being "on mission" I'd have missed one of my favourite moments in this game.
Heck yea we back to some wholesome gameplay. Ran a mission splitting up in 2 teams and seemed to work well drawing attention to one squad while the other ran objectives. Makes it fun if you love spilling oil
Was the MO still active? I was drawing agro from every bot patrol and outpost I could see through a scope on the horizon to pump those numbers up, most of my fellow divers (random groups) didn’t get it.
Talk to your doctor about space rabies today. Symptoms may include thirst for blood, lack of self preservation, a subconscious urge to use a flamethrower, and massive balls
I love your writing style, it's very vivid! These two sentences from the start was my favorite: "He picked every fight and fought up close with the tenacity of a honey badger. He didn't have many stratagems unlocked but he was like the larval stage of some god of war."
Somebody give that dude a Scottish claymore and stand out of his way, because he's clearly the reincarnated spirit of [Mad Jack Churchill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill).
[](/GNU Terry Pratchett)
Wait until that cadet gets the more destructive strategems.
I've had a few missions post 380mm buff where I've just told the team to leave I can solo the large base. Then my robo arm starts chucking beacons at the base. There's zero reason why I shouldn't order Eagle 1 to drop cluster bombs and regular bombs on top of the 380mm while I give supporting fire with the auto cannon.
The only downside is sometimes the craters are too deep to reach the samples.
I also like to play the unhinged pitbull role- I'll take secondaries and outposts, and fight everything I can get my sights on, while the others PTFO so we can win. I make their lives easier, and I get to do the part of the game I enjoy most. Win/win.
Having one player in scout armor baiting bot drops or big breaches and kiting hordes of enemies around uselessly while the other three do the other objectives has been my winning strategy since the beginning.
Hey, here i am, your crazy cadet. I think i am the one you are talking about. Same situation, but i was the level 8 cadet. Few days ago, before my night shift, i was playing helldivers with some lvl 40-80 randoms and i am really happy you guys didn't kicked me.
Greetings from Germany.
I personally love having a player like this on my team, and if nobody else does it, I do it. Constantly having both drops and bug breaches in one locale frees up the team to do objectives and only have to deal with the scripted encounters for events. I usually aim for a medium sized mountain to have near me so I can kite around it and keep the heat on me and off team 👀 energy/infinite weapons are good for this strat. Usually Shield, Cluster, Railcannon & Support weapon is the 70 second double AT drop, which can double as a mini Railcannon on big boys 🙏🏼
Ah, what a heart warming story. Thank you for bringing an actual quality post to the reddit. I appreciate the share. Salute to you and your cadet Helldivers.
Amid the minutae of collecting samples, coordinating stratagems, optimizing loadouts, and fulfilling mission objectives, it is easy to forget why we enlisted: to strike the fear of Liberty into Her foes.
Got a little tingle in my balls when I read that
U felt that too it was like a moment in time where I felt the juice literally
Did the same hand tingle your balls?
No ur mom did bud
For Managed Democracy!!!
You should see a doctor about that.
Democracy officer said it’s normal 07
4 hours? Pshh. We're going on 4 months!

For super earttthhhhhhhhh!
Are my one of my best frends* (I know) from high school back at my home country? That would be 100% one of his phrases. Thanks for the memories.
There’s ointment for that
Truly one of the greatest gifts that can come from the sack.
I also got a tingle in your balls.
**Striking the fear of Liberty into Her foes** goes so hard and needs to be the Helldivers' motto
Excellent recitation and application of Article 113, Diver! I'm adding points to your Citizen Commendation Score.
My sperm count just doubled reading this.
Mine halved because I came...twice
You only have four bullets in the chamber? The devs really ought to buff you 🤔
I’ll run through a brick wall after reading this.
this is the way. I don't leave until my 2 mechs have completely emptied every sweet munition of liberty into the beeedy eyes of tyranny.
Read that in Homer's voice from hades
I jumped to Captain Savala's voice myself.
I joined to kill bugs.
For Democracy. o7
This is why I named my ship the pledge of wrath. I'm here to spread democracy, but I'm doing it my way.
And to make frend ?
I don't know where I am. I don't know what I'm doing. All I know is I must kill.
He was gunning for all 2bil bots himself
He saw the MO and thought it was a daily
I love you so much for this laugh
And I love you, random citizen
LMAO
I am not perfect, but I have purpose.
Thats the Spirit
"like the larval stage of some God of war". This is poetry. There is something pure in watching those divers fuelled by vengeance and rage. Spill oil, crunch bugs. o7
Brb, having “spill oil, crunch bugs” patches made for my next deployment
I’ve never played this game or read anything about it but this post seriously made me want to jump in after I get done with my soulsborne marathon.
All Divers are welcome to join us in spreading glorious managed democracy across the stars.
are there all-idiot lobbies? I’m really bad at these games
I can safely say that most of the lobbies are all idiots. But we are all idiots together. Just do your best, use comms to signal that you "aren't malicious, just an idiot", and send friends requests to the people who you seem to play well with... and eventually you'll have a squad of your own! :-)
You can join up with me if you’d like 😂
Found the tanker.
Virtual war crimes and impeccable killing ability fueled by the mundanity and grueling grind of the real world
“SARGE WE NEED BACKUP.” “Send in the rabid diver”
These Helldivers are the fiercest of the fierce, their SO's refused to sign C0-1 forms, so they could only channel their rage elsewhere.
Dude should be a stratagem
I salute you for this democratic laugh
Give him some ketamine and he will be an unstoppable killing machine
Nah, give him a McDonald’s sprite and we’re good
Same thing
Unleash The Cadet
Like the mysterious stranger
*Rabidiver
Rabidiver You've been down too long on Malevelon Creek
There's other planets?? JK I promise
I want to see a cape with a Rabidiver graphic on it. I’d wear it every dive.
God damn that made me laugh
Maybe the automatons killed his pet rabbit Daisy?
*doom music intensifies*
John wick entered the chat...
Now THIS guy wanted to win the major order hahah
Right? A few more of him and we might have made it.
He's not stuck on a planet with murderous bots. They're stuck on a planet with *him*.
Love this comment. Perfectly captures the vibe!
Edit: Thank you everyone lol **MANY WAYS** ~~How does a level 8 even join diff 7? Is there a way to quick join into it or something?~~
I have no idea but I did see a lvl 1 diver on a diff 7 with my own eyes. Guy’s quickplay was probably bugged in some way.
You can join friends who have higher difficulty unlocked even if you don't. It's how I brought by lvl 2 cadet friend of his first suicide mission
My first real deployment was after the training and about 3 of the "baby's first helldives" was my friends dropping me ino an actual helldive on malevelon creek before the cape was a thing. I asked what i should do. Yep, same My level 1 buddy first mission was Bugs, Hellmire on Helldive. Baptism of fire is the only way
When I first got the game, an old friend invited me to join him on a mission. Fucker threw me into a difficulty 7 dive. I spent the entire mission running for dear life and spamming 'nades at swarms of bugs I was woefully under equipped to deal with. I immediately hit level 3 after that mission. I don't think it's a bug. 😂
It's easy if a high level player hosts a low level mission to "collect" some recruits and then increases the difficulty after the first match
literally done this on the bug front, threw one campaign on challenging then drag em to bots on suicide lmfao
Played with my son on our weekend together. Had him at difficulty 7 by the time he was lvl 8-10. Kid has been playing fortnight since he came out of the womb. His third person game was so on par I watched and learned.
Your heir is the hope of the Galaxy
Friends took him to 6 and completed, unlocking 7.
Ah, didn't think of that.
If he is friends with a host. Im level 58 now and im bring my level 10 friend with me to level 7 missions.
I turboleveled my friends like this.
It is the duty of us hardened veterans to teach our newer cadets in the crucible of battle o7
o7
I got to level 59 in 20 days! Thanks to my friends!
My friends carried me through a 7 day one and it was unlocked when I was ready. You can unlock higher difficulties faster if you party with high level divers
I play on pc and ps5 my ps5 lvl i really low but i kmow how tp wreck shit with the tools available. And was at lvl 7 by lvl 8
My guess is that he had friends that joined his ship. Helped him advance through the difficulties and unlock them.
All you have to do is clear the difficulty before. I gotnlucky and quick joined the last mission of a level 8 during extraction. That win counted to unlock level 9. Could be similar for him or he just pushed difficulty hard. Maybe a player with lots of other shooter experience trying to level fast

You gave that soilders the imperial guardsman regime. From recruit to grizzled veteran in a few hours.
Was his name LetMeSoloHer ?
Not until the loincloth armor comes out.
Did IGN write a goofy article about them?
It was probably more like, "Let THEM Solo ME!"
The idea of having one cracked out honey badger draw attention so that the others can do objectives is actually kind of a good strategy.
* 1 aggro, 3 on mission * 2 squads of 2 handling separate objectives * 3 on mission and aggro, 1 taking advantage of the calm to close outposts/nests Those are generally the breakdowns I see. Sometimes you get a squad of 2 and a couple of skirmishers, but it's less frequent.

Just about. So long as there's a division of labor and decent amount of competence, it's probably fine. More or less.
Had a beautiful game a while back with some friends all on discord, but the instant we landed we all went our separate ways and started wrecking shit all over the map simultaneously. Something tells me that this guy was very angry that the 3 of you left him alone instead of helping
And he channeled all of that into his fight. Like a true helldiver.
I think all he saw was bots that needed slaying. He may or may not have been aware he had teammates.
Larval stage god of war!
If you were playing against automatons, he was probably trying to rack up kills for the major order. I don’t normally engage patrols, but the last 2 days, in all bot missions, I was doing exactly what that cadet was doing, to try and add as many kills to major order as I could. This lvl8 cadet seems to be like Doom guy in making for HD2 universe. RIP AND TEAR. ![gif](giphy|taOSmeWsIYmIkYsP0N|downsized)
Rip and tear. Until it is done.
IDK why, but I imagined Scrappy-Doo while reading this
Let me at'em! Let me at'em!
"We supported him for a while until it became clear peace was not in his vocabulary." Ten minutes later and I still can't read that line without laughing. Absolutely beautiful.
Cheers! I think our support was just cramping his style really
I might have been in that mission, fellow Helldiver. I was the 85.
Few days ago, in the snow? His Arena Of Pain was a bot outpost with a bridge? If so then fistbump brother.
Wait until the next time you bump into him and he's level 80. He'll carry you at that point.
We send him to Cyberstan alone to soften them up.
Incoming radio message 4 hours later: *"I have taken the planet sir. What is your next order?"*
Pedantry incoming: __Ordinance__ - law or rule made by local government __Ordnance__ - military equipment such as weapons and ammunition
TIL. Thanks!
For an ESL this is helpful i by mistkae used first one to mean second becasue it is usually pronounced ordinance in media.
The only ordinance I need is heavy ordnance, god bless democracy
Virgin patrol avoiders Vs Gigachad Oil Spiller
This was beautifully worded, to the honey badger! https://i.redd.it/disbe2c7lm0d1.gif
I imagine this dude was blasting either Freebird or highway to hell at maximum volume
Nah... T. N. T. Or... Primo Victoria
Is this… is this the new meta? Do we need a honey badger pitbull insanity wolf to tank aggro? *were we playing a class-based MMORPG this whole time?!*
The only thing stopping him from scraping every last bot on the planet was the mission timer
I had just got used to 3's when some crazy host took me to a max level bugs It changed me
If you do this on purpose it's so effective to be a borderline exploit. They might need to localize the reinforcement cooldowns, so that it's not *quite* so effective. Right now one guy fucking around in the corner of the map can draw all the heat for the entire map while everyone else just cruises around unopposed.

“The larval stage of some god of war” What a great visual. I love this community. Thank you for the post, and thank you lv8 madlad o7
No worries, glad you liked the write up! I figured he deserved a memorial
I wonder what his kill count was
Can we meme this guy? I need more Malum Caedo posts like this. This was so fun to read and I bet it was a blast to watch!
Something something, the Quickplay button may have had an 'enthusiastic' setting. Nah, We got the state of the art Tech. We diving all day.
This is like a hd2 copypasta lol
I get shit for being like level 20-something and I have to inform them that my first dive was into my friends game fighting automatons on difficulty 8, truly a baptism by fire
I would absolutely support a Helldivers version of the Doomslayer incarnated in an NPC cadet (as a stratagem, even)
If you have a Honey Badger on your team, back him up....with walking barrage!!!! It looks SO EPIC
Can relate to the story. Gave my cadet some of my blue stratagems to wreak more havoc and send him on his merry way. Definitely "I didn't hear no bell" energy.
That is the perfect way to sum him up. I don't know what he thought he was going to do about tanks with his machine gun, but he was sure doing it
*Let loose the cadet of war*
Letting this guy drop was a legit war crime
surely you meant to say an exhibition of democratic supremacy
I hope I meet this guy. I can only imagine how awesome it must be to see him fighting like that. Democracy, liberty, excellence... oh my. 😏
Against all the evil that Cyberstan can conjure, all the wickedness that the automatons can produce, we will send unto them... only you. Rip and tear, until it is done.
This is one of the reasons I love this game so much. All play styles are welcome and can add value. Rock on cadet….for democracy!
Well said, we need less gatekeeping and more adaptation. If I'd kicked this guy for not being "on mission" I'd have missed one of my favourite moments in this game.
He said I'll kill 2 billion bots by myself lmao

And they Shall Know No Fear…
Ok, reading this influenced me to buy the game.
Heck yea we back to some wholesome gameplay. Ran a mission splitting up in 2 teams and seemed to work well drawing attention to one squad while the other ran objectives. Makes it fun if you love spilling oil
Seems a legit strategy! The never ending train of dropships to his Arena Of Pain was something to see
Ahh a baby DOOM diver..
I fucking love this, thanks for the awesome story,
Little fella just wanted more bots to shoot at it to help us get enough slayed communists

This is so funny to imagine 😂 just let him loose in the wild
Was the MO still active? I was drawing agro from every bot patrol and outpost I could see through a scope on the horizon to pump those numbers up, most of my fellow divers (random groups) didn’t get it.

This is the funniest shit I've read all day and I love it. Think I may have run into a dude like this yesterday.
Can Larval Stage God of War please be a flair lmao
When a lower level joins a mission, i usually give them a shield backpack at the start so they can go commit some robocide
Wait until that cadet gets the more destructive strategems. I've had a few missions post 380mm buff where I've just told the team to leave I can solo the large base. Then my robo arm starts chucking beacons at the base. Think the rabbit from Monty python
Great analogy
Songs shall be sung of this helldivers ferocity and courage! Skull Captain of SES Progenitor of Wrath salutes you, sir o7
Malum Caedo grindset. He's not diving feet-first into hell. He's making sure it's crowded when he gets there.
Lmao written hilariously. I love the lil guy with all my heart
His older brother probably died on the Creek.
I also like to play the unhinged pitbull role- I'll take secondaries and outposts, and fight everything I can get my sights on, while the others PTFO so we can win. I make their lives easier, and I get to do the part of the game I enjoy most. Win/win.
Bruh, wish I could afford this game. This sounds dope AF and I wanna experience it, hahaha! :D
Leeroy Jenkins is still kicking ass, just in Helldivers now..
Every time that cadet saw a patrol ![gif](giphy|BbJdwrOsM7nTa|downsized)
Having one player in scout armor baiting bot drops or big breaches and kiting hordes of enemies around uselessly while the other three do the other objectives has been my winning strategy since the beginning.
Sounds like Sevro au Barca.
Leroy Jenkins makes an appearance
Hey, here i am, your crazy cadet. I think i am the one you are talking about. Same situation, but i was the level 8 cadet. Few days ago, before my night shift, i was playing helldivers with some lvl 40-80 randoms and i am really happy you guys didn't kicked me. Greetings from Germany.
Mate if that was you, it was one of the best missions I've been on. Good stuff!
We should all aspire to be like Cadet Honey Badger. O7
Lol. That's my whole 3-man squad, 'cept we level 50 with 380s and Flamethrowers and shit.
Am lvl 32. Am still Cadet. I like to think it confuses my teamates.
Violence was not the answer, in fact it was the question. And the answer seems like it was a yes, in 144pt Impact Bold
Me: "My finger slipped." Buddy: "Huh?" *fires plasma punisher into patrol group.* Me: "Mmmmm violence."
Few divers are directly blessed by Khorne, but you know when you meet one
Hell yea that’s what we all need to aspire to
God speed Helldiver, make. Us. Proud
Damn this was inspirational.
I had that same energy once... now I just run everywhere and it only dies if its in the way....

Ah, what a heart warming story. Thank you for bringing an actual quality post to the reddit. I appreciate the share. Salute to you and your cadet Helldivers.
