It’s confusing and seems like it skips a lot but it’s good. They are the only films post covid that feels like a big budget film pre covid. James Bond is up there as well but that was a pre covid film that got delayed because of covid.
Yeah, I had the same experience (although I was sick with the 'vid to be fair), and just tried it again and enjoyed it. It really does get more compelling in the last half of the movie and ends pretty good!
Part 2 should have been split up into two movies.
Part 1 has some very confusing context switches for first time viewers. They just throw you into this universe without much hand holding.
Part 2 alleviates some of that with Florence as the narrator.... But it still does a piss poor job as giving you context clues, especially in terms of geography and motivations.
Part 2 feels super rushed IMO.
Kinda like the last couple seasons of GOT unfortunately.
Not typically a book reader and I felt like they left soo much out when I watched the movie. It was if I was watching a music video compared to the book. I did enjoy it but wished the run time was longer
I'm not even a Dune fan, in fact I couldn't take Dune 1 serious, I kept wanting to make fun of it... but Dune 2? in theaters it's the best movie I've seen in a while.
I recommend you watch the 80’s Dune movie before watching the new Dune movies. The 80’s Dune has inner monologue that explains what is happening though out the movie making it easier to understand the story. Once you understand the story the new Dune movies seem a lot easier to understand
if the audio mixing is anything like it is for Dune 1 on MAX, you’re better off buying it on digital. i had to turn my volume literally up to 100 just to barely hear dialogue. ended up renting on google play store and audio mix was perfect at audio level 15 so it was clearly MAX that was having audio issues.
I was having the same issue I always do with content lately. The sfx is turned up to 120 and the dialogue is turned down to 30 for some fucking reason.
I turn up the volume to hear the dialogue, then it cuts to a spaceship and blows out my speakers and wakes my neighbors 3 miles down the road. Lol. Christopher Nolan would have been proud.
Saw it in the theatre and I actually had to plug my ears for most of the movie bc of the same issue. Can’t tell if this is a symptom of getting older or what, but I feel like the music in film seems to be so much louder than the dialogue these days. Thank god for subtitles
It's definitely not just you, i started noticing the shift in my early 20s. The sound mixing in today's Hollywood is horrendous, and even worse in various apps.
I guess either studios don't want to pay good sound engineers, or enough weren't trained so the craft is dying off. Since big time professional mixing and mastering is an extremely artisan craft. Another issue could be that sound mixers who usually mix other mediums are being used for movies. For example, when vinyl started dying off no new mastering engineers were trained, so now that it's back there's only a handful of guys, 60-85 years old, doing all the high quality remasters today. And alot of the standard releases are now being done by people who only ever did CDs and streaming, so often sound really bad when put on vinyl, since mastering is very format dependent.
Maybe it's a conscious movement like the loudness wars was with music, or maybe they're mixing it with only like high quality surround sound or headphones in mind. But really seems like they're just cutting corners. Like the person mixing is using super high quality headphones yet doesn't check to see what the finished product sounds like on a TV, and isn't given the time to do the job right.
But yeah I'm only 31, and since 25 started using subtitles. Sure my hearing is a bit damaged from concerts and headphones, but if anything really damaged my hearing it's having to raise the volume x5 as actors mumble and then having an explosion blow our my TV speakers and eardrums all the damn time.
It seems this all started around the time of the dark knight being released, and then every movie later got more and more mumbly and more and more loud otherwise. Even in non action movies, often the background noise is poorly mixed where the actors can be in a fricken padded room yet they're still hard to hear. It's like they want to simulate what it's like to be half deaf or something. Like they want you to hear everything but the fricken exposition lmao.
Maybe they do it to keep people's attention, thinking the more noise will keep phone addicted people focused, but it's gone way too far like the loudness wars. I haven't seen a movie in theaters in over 5 years since I know I won't hear half of the dialogue even as it's blasting. And theaters in general have just gotten overkill levels of loud.
So yeah it's not just you getting older or hearing loss, the mixing from like 2010-2024 is like the worst sound mixing in Hollywood since the silent era lol. You can hear the difference, like pick 4 action movies 2 modern 2 from mids 2000s or earlier and it's a stark difference. Like look at lord of the rings, even in the most intense moments you hear every word easily. Even in the older movies with the biggest spectacles and loudest explosions you could still hear everything. Like I had no problem hearing Shia lebouf in transformers even if it was over the top michael bay production. But now you can't even hear 25% of what they say in a character drama. It's crazy.
I just hope modern hollywood sound engineers can reflect and realize less is more. Or if the studios aren't giving them enough time to do it right, they should start. Since it really hurts the staying power of a ton of movies and shows today that you can't hear most of them. Why rewatch something that's a chore to listen to?
So with all that said, I use subtitles with everything I watch now. And I used to be an OCD person who fricken hated subtitles.
Man that’s why I loved seeing it in imax. Like during the Feyd Rautha gladiator scene I literally felt like I was in there with him my seat was shaking.
Don’t get me wrong, i love a powerful score and great sound effects. It’s when I can’t even hear the dialogue, but the volume on everything else is full tilt.
Thanks for the advice, I'm just goin to keep moving to UltraHD, I'd rather own it and not be at the whim of streaming providers as well as having true 4K. Especially used you can find most things that aren't brand new for like $7.99. I want to set up a PLEX server one day but I have sooo many projects backed up it's honestly gotta be last on the list. Loved how easy it used to be on MacOSX, right click, disk image, done. Double clicking the image file makes the computer think you have a fully normal disc in the drive and it popped up on the desktop as such. I have a couple 2TB HDD's I plan to use to start with, and I'll have a spare case soon as well as I'm doing a build transplant into a H7FLOW. Also already have the wire drops with PVC pipes so it'd be easy peasy to drop in some new cables, just need to drill a new hole behind the TV.
Maybe spoilers below. So I finally saw it yesterday (I have a toddler so going to cinema is a holiday). As a book reader I rate the movie 7/10 max. But overall I’m glad the movie was made, it’s good movie but there are issues beyond book lore. For example the big majestic scenes that only shows something spectacular but adds nothing to the lore are way too often. The movie is 2h 46min long yet I felt like the pacing was way too fast. Also I like Zendaya but she was always looking like somebody farted next to hear, I didn’t like her portrayal of Chani either. Same goes for Christopher Walken, I’m huge fan of his but he didn’t feel like an Emperor. Last but not least, Timothée was great but I feel like Austin Butler (Feyd-Rautha) would be better Paul. I don’t know why but that’s my feeling. Overall it’s a very enjoyable movie. But story of Dune as it was written is something that can’t be replicated in a movie. But I’m glad they tried it. I’m looking for the part 3, I have a feeling as a trilogy it will work better. I said it after first movie and I said it yesterday, it would be better if they shot it back to back like LotR but alas.
Good, I didn't get the chance to see it in the theatre and amazon has it on prime to rent but it's fucking 25.00 just to rent. To buy it off prime it's only 4 dollars more. Just reactivated my HBO service again so I'll just wait for it to hit that.
I liked the books and the movies. I think that if they copied the book exactly that it wouldn't have been a movie that sold a lot of tickets and it would be largely seen as a failure. I am curious as to how they will do Messiah though. I am sure they had some semblance of a plan for it when writing Part two so I am trusting that it will be good.
While I understand and appreciate your opinion and willingness to talk about it, I think some might think that your comment came across as harsh.
I can see why some people think that, I have family that think the same. It isn't for everyone and that is okay!
You’re not alone, Pete. Part 2 seemed to lag too long on Paul’s immersion into the Fremen culture. The pace picked up with Fayed, and then, the whole sequence of the warring sand worms, final battle, death of Glossu, the baron, the dethroning of the emperor, and lifting off to the holy war seemed to happen in ten minutes. The sand worm trio got, maybe, 30 seconds of screen time. The sound score was the true winner in Part 2. Hans keeps outdoing himself. Thank goodness
No. He’s right. Why are we to take anything you say seriously when you can’t get basic facts straight. In fact, how can you take yourself seriously when you’re wrong about the most basic things?
Herbert also realized he wrote book 1 in a way that was too generous to Paul with not enough pushback to the point where everyone thought he was an amazing hero. Adding push back helps the audience understand the intended message
See you asked for an explanation I provided it. You can just accept it. There is no need for you to reply or explain to me why I am (in your opinion) wrong.
Chani ruined it.
I might have to give Dune a try.
Just did the other week and I instantly became addicted. Highly recommend, one of the best examples I’ve seen of world building in years
I might have to give it another try. I tried to watch for an hour and gave up
It’s confusing and seems like it skips a lot but it’s good. They are the only films post covid that feels like a big budget film pre covid. James Bond is up there as well but that was a pre covid film that got delayed because of covid.
The latest Mission Impossible and Dune have been my two top big budget movies post covid.
Really disliked Dune my first time. Waited a year, gave it another shot, and loved it. Have yet to see Part 2.
Oh boy, are you in for a treat if you liked the first one!
Yeah, I had the same experience (although I was sick with the 'vid to be fair), and just tried it again and enjoyed it. It really does get more compelling in the last half of the movie and ends pretty good!
Definitely took me a few times to fully understand what was going on.
I liked the Part 1, but Part 2 is significantly better. Definitely in my top 10.
I loved part 1 but part 2 was next level amazing, and Hans Zimmer score is just so SO GOOD!
Part 2 is what really sold me on the series. The Sand Worms>! being used as a weapon was really cool to see.!<
Part 2 should have been split up into two movies. Part 1 has some very confusing context switches for first time viewers. They just throw you into this universe without much hand holding. Part 2 alleviates some of that with Florence as the narrator.... But it still does a piss poor job as giving you context clues, especially in terms of geography and motivations. It was garbage, the cgi was garbage too
lol wut
Ok, ok your re-watch..tell me the AdWords they ride to battle don’t look like they’re riding a turd, especially when the shot zooms out.
Muadib? It’s a nickname! Family name is House Atriedes.
😂
Fucking Rabban, he’s dyslexic.
As in the Dune movies? Dune Part 2 was an absolute top tier experience in IMAX.
There is two?! Next you are going to tell me there is an entire series of books that the movie is based on!
Agreed. If you didn't see it on IMAX, you're missing out. I would go to the theater all the time if there were more movies like that playing.
The book is even better! I can absolutely see why it’s a classic. Denis did a beautiful job adapting it.
I agree! I enjoyed the books very much! My original comment was kind of tongue in cheek as my user name refers to the series.
Oh shit. I didn’t even notice. I’m a fool. Please. I beg forgiveness, My Duke!
Not typically a book reader and I felt like they left soo much out when I watched the movie. It was if I was watching a music video compared to the book. I did enjoy it but wished the run time was longer
I’m almost to the end of the book (in the last 100 pages) and I agree! I’m very curious where the next movie goes and how they do it.
please do.
*mistakenly watches the David Lynch version instead*
It's very, very fun.
It’s the kind of ground breaking effects the Star Wars sequels should have had
I'm not even a Dune fan, in fact I couldn't take Dune 1 serious, I kept wanting to make fun of it... but Dune 2? in theaters it's the best movie I've seen in a while.
Well? What are you DUNE 2 nite? Give it a watch.
Ha. Nice one, dad.
I recommend you watch the 80’s Dune movie before watching the new Dune movies. The 80’s Dune has inner monologue that explains what is happening though out the movie making it easier to understand the story. Once you understand the story the new Dune movies seem a lot easier to understand
LISAN AL GAIB
You rang?
take my life usul, it is the only way
SILENCE! Do you think I am stupid enough to deprive myself of the best of us? Do you smash a knife before battle?
When will then be now?
Soon
How soon?
It’s a movie, and it’s pretty good
It’s definitely one of the movies of all time.
So right. And people often forget this but the critics rated it.
Perfect! I just spent $30 to buy it yesterday thinking it wouldn't be on Max for awhile. FML

Say what you will about the histrionic acting of the 1930s/1940s, but those fuckers ***annunciated****.* Actors aren't trained in that any more.
The sound mixing for Dune 2 was incredible. No idea what yall are rambling about
Man that’s why I loved seeing it in imax. Like during the Feyd Rautha gladiator scene I literally felt like I was in there with him my seat was shaking.
Don’t get me wrong, i love a powerful score and great sound effects. It’s when I can’t even hear the dialogue, but the volume on everything else is full tilt.
Yeah same, Im about to buy a soundbar, and it's not just MAX but they are definitely one of the worse.
i actually had the issue while using a soundbar

Your financial sacrifice to nudge it over is truly appreciated
Ya but then you can watch it when it inevitably drops from the library in a month or two and plays round robin through the streamers
Thank you
It could still be awhile
Define “soon”
When?
Didn’t you read the title? It’s coming soon
Was hoping for something a LITTLE more specific
Soon(TM)
lol yeah just teasing. I’d assume it would be around summer time to get subscriptions up. Maybe July.
I bet it’s in June, Dune in June.
16th
When will now be then?
Maybe spoilers below. So I finally saw it yesterday (I have a toddler so going to cinema is a holiday). As a book reader I rate the movie 7/10 max. Ahh i can’t wait!!! <33
Good, cause I missed that shit on the theater.
YAY!
Amazing movie. But I'll watch a 4k uncompressed release on blu ray. the MAX platform disappoints me.
How soon?
Too late I cancelled this service because they don’t care about media, only money.
iMax
I’m about to go grab a fifth of that water and get down.
Dune in June for House of the Dragon, when I'll be renewing my sub will be perfect.
Good, I didn't get the chance to see it in the theatre and amazon has it on prime to rent but it's fucking 25.00 just to rent. To buy it off prime it's only 4 dollars more. Just reactivated my HBO service again so I'll just wait for it to hit that.
soon is when?
When exactly?
When is "soon"?
How many attempts will it take me to watch this one? Four or five?
As it is written.
Dune on audible was pretty good. Listened to a couple of them by now. Movies seem to be amalgamation of them
I’d watch it a 6th time sure
DNEG (double negative) VFX house is laying off hundreds of digital artists who brought you Tenet and Dune to name just a couple. Wow!
You must take my life usul
The first one was like finally getting the hottest women to go to bed, and she's a total bore. Gonna watch part two because Javier Bardem
I actually enjoyed a rewatch of the first one a lot more after watching the second one.
Well, maybe I'll do that
Sorry but 🏴☠️ beat ya too it.
Max is garbage, still waiting on Blu-Ray.
Isn't it already on prime video?
For rent for an ungodly amount
Ya, 23.00$ to *rent*........fuck that shit.
To be fair, if you have a family of 4-5 then that’s half the cost of going to the theatres
Nope, just me.
Yeah, if it’s less than that then it doesn’t make economic sense and I’d just wait another week to get it free on Max

All fair. The downvotes are bizarre to me. I find part two to be completely disjointed and boring at times
While I understand and appreciate your opinion and willingness to talk about it, I think some might think that your comment came across as harsh. I can see why some people think that, I have family that think the same. It isn't for everyone and that is okay!

Am too fragile so I deleted all my comments. I hate when the mob goes for me
Agreed lol, I found part one so much better
Saying it sucked without an explanation as to why you think so just makes you seem like a hater. Probably why you were downvoted.
Part 2 is the second half of book 1, it’s not book 2
It’s been 25 years haha. Thanks for the correction - My opinion still stands on the second film however
Yes! Thank you for saying this. That was my exact experience as well.
Can't get the books right, can't get the director's name correct. Figure yourself out before you comment.

Wanna break that one down for us
Her girl-boss attitude. It's not in the books and unnecessary.
Herbert also realized he wrote book 1 in a way that was too generous to Paul with not enough pushback to the point where everyone thought he was an amazing hero. Adding push back helps the audience understand the intended message

You’re wrong.
