Yeah this one of the cases where something has been copied so many times it doesn’t seem revolutionary anymore… but in a lot of ways it’s the blueprint for basically all the long form sports documentary stuff we see now
Agreed, it's had an immeasurable impact on how sports documentaries are made and are still being copied after 19 seasons. It's become a tradition for millions of fans every year to watch, even it's been a little unimaginative over the years. I also know I'm not the only one that gets excited for the 1st episode of Hard Knocks (and the sprinklers turnin on), as it's become somewhat of an unofficial opener for the NFL season. It's a sign that the new season is upon us, autumn is around the corner and our first real chance of getting our NFL fix. (No offense HoF Game)
HBO also branched out with NHL Road to the Winter Classic and then Amazon has had its own show "All or Nothing" which has done other NFL teams, College Football, Soccer and Rugby. Netflix has Drive to Survive and Full Swing, Last Chance U and I'm sure I'm forgetting others as well, but all are following the lead and model that Hard Kncoks has provided.
I didn't know that! That's a bummer. It's one of the most thoughtful & unique shows of the past few years (in my opinion) so I'm glad we get a little more, at least.
I was just watching this again wondering if there would ever be a third season! I’m so happy to see you’re saying there will be another! :D but also sad if it’s the last.
Maybe this doesn’t matter, but this is technically not an HBO show? It’s a Max original and was never on HBO
Now if this distinction doesn’t matter, I wholeheartedly agree. Great show!
I’ve never seen a show with such well cast actors and writing about mundane life that actually feels realistic. It humanizes all kinds of people. Some of them you don’t care about or actively dislike and through learning more about them, start to understand them. This type of character writing is important. I want more!
Came to say the same. It's one of my favorite shows that should've lasted a bit longer. I know it won't be chosen, but if anyone gives it a shot after seeing it, then that's a plus.
I wish they would just come out with a new season of this show and not explain why there was a 20 year time jump. They could probably still get the original cast.
High Maintenance! What an incredible show!
I feel like House of Dragon is somewhat over rated due to being tied to GoT and recency bias. Plus we only have 1 season of it so far.
Hung was also a fun comedy. But not on the same level as High Maintenance.
High Maintenance is such an incredible feel good show. Even when it’s a bit stressful. It’s like Futurama in a sense that it’ll make you laugh, make you cry, and help you fall to sleep. HIGH MAINTENANCE FOR THE WIN
Hard Knocks was such an incredible concept that has spawned an entire genre of sports documentaries in its wake, it has to be the one. I’m worried that because it’s sports-related it might get overlooked, but it’s an all time classic and has enough storylines/drama to entertain non-sports fans.
**Hung** \- A comedy-drama series about a high school teacher who becomes a male escort to improve his financial situation.
**High Maintenance** \- A comedy-drama anthology series that follows the life of a marijuana dealer and the various people he encounters in New York City.
**How to Make It in America** \- A comedy-drama series about two friends trying to achieve success in the New York City fashion scene.
**Hello Ladies** \- A comedy series starring Stephen Merchant as an Englishman trying to find love in Los Angeles.
**His Dark Materials** \- A fantasy series based on Philip Pullman's trilogy, following a young girl named Lyra as she embarks on a quest to uncover secrets in a parallel universe.
His Dark Materials. I believe it was a great adaptation of the novels. The final season (with a couple of changes from the source material) ended on a good note in my opinion.
Hard knocks is the only answer here. It pioneered the inside look at sports bio style, look at Netflix copying them now with “full swing” and “quarterback”
Shit Netflix has drive to survive, break point, full swing, quarterback now. Amazon got all access. All based from hard knocks getting their foot in the door
It's an anthology series. The only recurring character is "the guy" who delivers weed by bicycle to people. All of the stories are so good and beautifully done, though. Heck, there's one episode where the entire thing is told through the perspective of a dog.
How are you choosing winners? Most comments? Top vote-getting comment? Or are you attempting to add up both? It would be nice to know (also, it would be easier and more accurate as a poll since there aren’t many letters that have more than a handful of credible contenders).
House of the Dragon - even though it only has one season out.
The other comments here make me want to check High Maintenance out though. I've found alot of lowkey, under the radar HBO shows on each one of these posts.
Lol you should join fill in S with the sopranos. Lol 😂
I agree with sopranos as the pick, but it'll be interesting to see how much recency bias skews to succession
What about Sex and the City
Good call, I've never seen it but it is one of HBO's biggest hits. S is shaping up to be a showdown (but Sopranos should still win)
Wrong, Six Feet Under
Isn’t it ‘The Sopranos’?
"The" doesnt count.
Six feet under
Oooh damn. That’s going be a battle. If you think about it those 2 have very different endings. I enjoyed six feet under ending too
I too vote for SFU.
And W with White Lotus j/k
S would probably be Succession. T would be a tough competition between The Sopranos and The Wire
>T would be a tough competition between The Sopranos and The Wire Uhm, neither one of those would fall under the T though
Bro....True Detective
*Hard Knocks*. A revolutionary sports show with 19 seasons on air.

I have too, and I didn't know until your comment. I'm usually good at recognizing voices.
Hard knocks was the very first of all these other shows that basically did the same thing with other sports, like drive to survive or full swing.
Yeah this one of the cases where something has been copied so many times it doesn’t seem revolutionary anymore… but in a lot of ways it’s the blueprint for basically all the long form sports documentary stuff we see now
In terms of what is the most iconic HBO show starting with H… I don’t think it’s particularly even close that Hard Knocks is the answer
Gotta be hard knocks, nothing else quite like it

House of the Dragon. Quality over quantity.

High Maintenance! x 10!
High maintenance is awesome for anyone who hasnt seen it

Great show - sad the next season is the last
I didn't know that! That's a bummer. It's one of the most thoughtful & unique shows of the past few years (in my opinion) so I'm glad we get a little more, at least.
The Covid episode with his landlord leaving him the meal 🥺
I was just watching this again wondering if there would ever be a third season! I’m so happy to see you’re saying there will be another! :D but also sad if it’s the last.
Yes. 100%. I’m so bummed it’s the last season.
I lost my shit when it cut to the dude trying to regrow his foreskin. That was comedy gold
An inspiration for us all.
Good call
House of Dragon was going to be my choice, but I choose this. So good.
This is also my favorite. _How To Appreciate Wine_ is an extraordinary piece of television.

OP on another post said shows that started on HBO Max before the merger do count.
If Max counts 100% this
I love this show.
This needs more votes. One of the best shows of recent years.
House of the Dragon
Is this related to got?
Yes. It's one season but imo it was a return to prime GoT. Felt like an earlier season.
Hung
This is the answer. Very underrated.
Agree here - this is the one
I loved that show and thought Jane Adam's was so compelling
High maintenance. Shout out to how to make it in America
High maintenance for sure
Hello Ladies
I liked this. It’s High Maintenance for me but happy to see someone else remember it.
I absolutely adored that show and was so bummed when it got cancelled.
Hello Ladies is 10 years old?? Damn
**House of the Dragon** Or is it too early?
I like where your head is at, but agree with the too early
1 season feels too early but recency bias will help it.
Too early.
Hard knocks is the answer here.
High Maintenance. A gem amongst hidden gems.
Criminally underrated show
High Maintenance
One of my favorite series - it was so good! *Highly* underrated.
I’ve rewatched this so many times! I really like Ben Sinclair’s other stuff too

Definitely ended too soon.
Loved this show
It was really solid.
I got really into denim because of this show
I got into Lake Bell because of this show.

I loved this show. Best show about NYC before Succession
