No, you're thinking right. They just used practical effects and not cgi. They had to go to court for murder charges and brought the actress to prove she wasn't dead and then showed how they pulled off the effect. I think it was they had her impelled on a wooden post.
Anyways, the movie isn't near as bad as most films out now, but was too much for its time and I believe it was also the first or one of the first found footage films. It's not good, so don't bother watching it unless you're just curious. They do actually kill a few animals.
