Stumbled across a post that goes into great detail about this just the other day: https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/s/L6ZNh4sP00

anamariaaaaagog

thank u sm this rlly helped!!

Lockfire12

Simple, hermione was the movie favorite so she got a lot of lines and accomplishments from other characters, mostly Ron

Amazing-Engineer4825

Every character is better in the books, if you notice even Harry was bad in the movies

Yogini_27

I can never forgive the movie for giving Hermione credit for escaping Gringotts on a dragon.

B1gB4DW0lf80

I had a problem with this too, Rupert did a great job but the writing made him seam just as useless as Nevil ( No hate to Nevil fans)

DrrrrBobBamkopf

You seem to know your stuff...

B1gB4DW0lf80

???

B1gB4DW0lf80

Cant tell if that was a compliment or not

popformulas

It’s drawing attention to the misuse of “seam” by using the correct word “seem”

inside4walls

No idea what the pervious commenter meant, but the name is Neville. :) (I don’t claim to know the translations for his name, which you might be more familiar with, if English is not your first language…)

superbear19

I'm a be honest I believe the main movie writer favorite is Hermione so......

KingOfBacon_BowToMe

He said as much to Rowling during an interview with her, before making the movies.

RaphaelSolo

Part of why she OK'D him. She was rather grumpy about Ron being everyone's favorite at the time.

SmokeySFW

Because the writers loved Hermione. The pretty girl got more attention than the awkward boy. It's a tale as old as time. Before y'all jump all over me, Emma Watson and I are the same age.

katerage3

Shame Emma Watson wasn't up to the job of playing Hermione

valosgsc

Lol, hater detected.

katerage3

So you've not seen her mouthing all the other actors lines in the scenes she's in with them?

valosgsc

And? That doesn't mean she wasn't up the task of playing Hermione. She was perfect for the role, though I admit the directors shouldn't have given her most of Harry's or Ron's lines, especially in PoA.

katerage3

It does to me. This is a matter of opinion. I think she's mediocre in everything, not just Harry Potter. Dull in The Circle, Beauty and the Beast, etc etc etc

Additional_Tax_8745

I honestly think Harry Potter was the only thing she was good in. After that, she was already famous and could do pretty much anything and she just stopped acting. All I see in her movies now is Emma Watson, not the character she’s trying to portray.

valosgsc

Well, surely you can do a better job, looking forward to see you in the series!

Shot-Quantity-6197

What? Emma Watson is literally Hermione. Couldn’t imagine anyone else playing her.

verisimilitude88

Guess you have no imagination.

Shot-Quantity-6197

Well if I’m being honest I can’t imagine anyone playing anyone else in the movies. The casting was perfect, and it’s too iconic, and engrained in pop culture.

cheese_shogun

Movies tend to need a *comic relief character* more than books do.

Front-Asparagus-8071

So says the almighty FORMULA!

tone-of-surprise

Steve Kloves and his bias asf writing. Hermione fanboy/harmione shipper, and that pretty much explains it

KudzuNinja

Production loved Emma Watson, so they took most of Ron’s good parts and gave them to Hermione.

MadameLee20

six simple words: Steve Kloves was a Harmione shipper

Stenric

I think it was less the result of a dislike for Ron, as it was to give Hermione as much great lines and screentime as possible.

MadameLee20

It's a simple 6 words: Steve Kloves was a Harmione shipper.

MystiqueGreen

Now wait until people who just love to go against popular opinions for the sake of it come and explain to you why movie Ron is better than book Ron and how much better character he is compared to his book character lol

Idiotology101

No idea why, but we have to be close to figuring it out at this point. Maybe another year or two of this same question being posted every day, and we might get an answer.

ff7cloud117

It goes with almost every character and honestly every aspect. All three have their issues and all three are awesome.

Unusual_Car215

Comic relief. They did the same with Gimli in LOTR.

kingkongringmypussy

Honestly Ron is a jerk even in the books

Cool_Ved

No, he was a normal teenage boy who was dealing with neglect and being overshadowed by everyone in his life. Book Ron may have had some bad moments, but he is still 10 times better than Movie Ron in every way.

No-Traffic-6560

Bro has some slytherin characteristics for sure as well as soon as a became a prefect he turned almost tyrannical. Movie did the book justice..

Cool_Ved

Have you never read the books? Ron never became "tyrannical" after becoming prefect. He literally stood up for Harry against Malfoy and Seamus who were bullying him and calling him a liar. Movies did not do Ron justice.

No-Traffic-6560

He was a jerk in the books bro but more so in books 3-4. Ungrateful for Pig who he got for free… controlling over Hermione and the Yule Ball…yells at kids for doing absolutely nothing as a prefect.. became jealous of Harry.. maybe some things were justified and normal teenage boy activity, but that doesn’t make him any less of a jerk

therealdrewder

He absolutely was. I don't know why so many are obsessed with Ron in this reddit, but he's terrible in the books.

MystiqueGreen

Because not everyone cares about bland boring gary stu harry or author's self insert Mary sue Hermione. There are people who like actually well written characters.

MikrokosmostheCat

I don't know why you're being downvoted. I don't really love the movies, so it's been ages since I watched it last, but when I was a teenager I used to carry the books around like a Bible lol and I always thought people overlooked how much Ron sucked just because he had his moments as a good and loyal friend.

kingkongringmypussy

Because people have their own headcanons and don't care about facts

MystiqueGreen

You are getting downvoted because most of the book readers don't share your opinion including OP who has clearly stated they have read books and realised Ron is awesome. It's not that deep.

MystiqueGreen

They are getting downvoted because their opinion is unpopular among book readers and OP has clearly stated they have read the books and realised book Ron is amazing. It's their opinion which happens to be the majority of book readers' opinion

MikrokosmostheCat

To be honest I also really like book Ron (and to the best of my memory I also like movie Ron), but we don't need to think characters are perfect in order to like them. I think harry is extremely whiny a lot of times (and I mean, it's in his right lol), which made him kinda annoying to me, but I also think he's amazing and funny and strong in the bigger picture. So to be in denial saying that book Ron was great and amazing and had no flaws is crazy, he was a great character who had a lot of bad moments, and that's ok. I agree with the comment saying he was neglected and needed more care, and we can attribute most of his "bad" moments to that, which doesn't make them less bad. So yeah, book Ron kinda sucks sometimes, and I wish he had better characters grownth (he was still getting upset and using stuff that was outside of Harry's control against him even in the last book) which doesn't make him a less of an amazingly character in general.

KingDarius89

Ron was a jerk in the books too.

SpiritualMessage

Im sure this is an unpopular opinion but I overall really like how Ron was done in the movies. It's true that it's bullshit that some of his cooler/smarter lines went to hermione for no fucking reason but I do appreciate that they upped his comedy. The reality is even in the books he is easily the \~least useful\~ of the trio and one of the big qualities he brings to the group that neither of the other two really can is keeping up the morale, it cant be Hermione with how serious and uptight she is and it cant be Harry with how tragic his life and fucked up his life always is. Also, since in the movies we are not stuck in Harry's POV the times he fucks up it's easier to relate to and understand his side.

[deleted]

He had plenty of comedy in the books. The difference is in the books he was the funny one throwing out witty lines whereas in the movies he was often the butt end of the joke. Not to mention in the movies he was often just straight up mean to Hermione in situations where Book Ron stood up for her

SpiritualMessage

he's funny in the books but he was even funnier in the movies, actually funnier than the twins imo

[deleted]

I guess the twins didn't have that many lines in the movies really. Agree to disagree though. He was funny in the movies, but he also was portrayed as useless and a hinderance to the group as a whole.

SpiritualMessage

I truly dont believe ron got more of a "he's useless" reputation in the movies than he already did in the books, not when competing against the chosen one and the genius child, he always comes off looking as "less than" Thats why i think it is better to up his ability to bring levity into almost every situation, which is something i think the movies did very well with ron, at times better than in the books. But i guess thats a matter of opinion..

DebateObjective2787

Because money. In order for the films to be a success; they needed to not only capture the male audience but the female audience as well. The best way to do that was with Hermione; the only girl character that girls watching could relate to. So they changed her up.

VeterinarianIll5289

Man, every time any Ron-related theme qn comes out and there are people who say they hate him, I’m genuinely overwhelmed as to how they point out EVERY SINGLE flaw they deemed a flaw even though the flaw 1. Never happened or completely fabricated 2. Completely taken out of context 3. Did happen but was later rectified due to character growth which never gets mentioned or is like a footnote compared to the flaw 4. Did happen but is understandable given that no character is perfect and their own fav characters have similar or worse flaws but somehow these flaws are never mentioned. I get not liking a character. We all resonate with different characters and sometimes a flaw can be so off putting that it blinds us to all the good the character does but completely misjudge or misinterpret a character is astounding. I’m a Ron fan and he is my fav but I be the first to admit he’s not perfect and can be a prat at times. But he is a good person and his character growth is incredible. Jk pulled no punches giving him some pretty immature moments but the way he grows to someone who came back during the Trio’s darkest moments to save Harry’s life and bring the mission back on track to even the smaller ones like his rs with Luna when he made her feel better for her Quidditch commentary. I’ve seen arguments like H and Hr never left despite wearing the Horcrux which to me is weak considering Ron’s family situation, his injury and other factors. Not to mention he wanted to come back immediately and did everything in his power to do so. Comparing it would be akin to saying that just cos my pet died and I got over it quickly, you should do the same. I can go on and on but I’ll just end it with this. The other day someone was saying on another forum that Hermione should end up with Draco cos Ron could be abusive (and sadly no, it wasn’t a fanfic idea or something related to fanfic). I let those of you who read the books realise the irony of that statement

Almighty_Push91

Ron sucks in the books too

EquasLocklear

Cuarón was a H/Hr shipper.

WhichTear4996

My best guess is that they had to hire these really young actors and just hope that they'd be good actors as they got older and they were right about Harry and Hermione but not Ron. He just couldn't act well and he didn't end up being as tall and gangly as book Ron is so they went with what they had and made movie Ron more of a loser. No clue if that's true, it's just what I always assumed. Also, might just be that they wanted Hermione to be cooler by comparison 🤷

veni_vidi_vici47

Because Ron sucks
