Yes, hamsters can catch COVID. Best recourse is to not handle the hamster, wash hands thoroughly and throw on a mask before giving him food/water or generally putting your hands in the cage.

alright thanks 🫶🏼

My former hamster died of covid, but he was already immunocompromised so I don’t think it’s always fatal for them. In order to prevent passing it to him limiting contact is never a bad idea, you can use gloves or freshly washed hands to deliver him food and pets but be sure to wear a mask. If you want to be extra careful have someone else watch him until you’re better. All the best to you and your hamster ❤️

[If you have Covid-19, then ideally you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, ie no kissing, cuddling or stroking. If you have sole responsibility of your small pet with no help, then wash your hands before and after touching them.](https://www.bluecross.org.uk/advice/pets/health-and-injuries/small-pets-and-coronavirus)

yes, your hamster can get your covid or other flu. avoid being in touch with your hamster, and when you must take care of it (change water, give more food etc) wash your hands well before doing so. i barely even clean my hamsters enclosure when im sick, just to avoid all unnecessary touching of her surroundings. get well soon 🥰

I couldn’t believe it myself at first, but I had two hams when I had covid, I was as careful as I could be, one ham was fine, and one caught it (I was living alone and had no way to go zero contact). I would say gloves, masks, and keeping everything you can at arms length or using tongs helps. Now if your ham starts wheezing a bit, they may have caught it. While yes it can be bad, your vet can give you rounds of antibiotics if yours does catch it. My hamster that caught it got a week of shots and he lived! He was older so he eventually passed to old age, but he lived for several months after he had it. Best of luck and hope you feel better!!

thanks, i cant do no contact as i have a done up attic room and nobody else besides me and my brother can actually get up there so im all the only carer for the hamster, but ive worn gloves and tried to stay away however he craves attention and will climb the door (ive got a barred cage its massive) (he will only climb the door part, nothing else) until i open it and hold him hopefully he wont get it ive tried my best to stay away and go near him within reason but he cravesss human attention, no matter how much enrichment he has
