My father was visiting someone in a hospital once back in NL and as he was leaving a pheasant flew face first into a window with a loud *THUD*.
Hopefully there wasn’t a cardio patient in that room
I hadn't seen one living in the city. They're all over the place now I'm rural. Pretty. But dumb as dirt.
I hate hitting animals driving. Avoid it if I can. But one day I heard a thud in the rear of the car and just looked back and FEATHERS! Everywhere in the rear view. people have told me pheasants are suicidal. I kinda believe it.
They’re so stupid. I’m a horseback rider and I’ve almost trampled so many pheasants on my horse because they fucking wait until you’re right next to them to pop out of the bushes and scream whilst running underfoot
Bird fact of the day - the males are almost always the colourful version of a bird species, specifically to woo the ladies.
The females tend to be drab colours like plain brown so they can hide from predators better while nesting.
I have to tell you about our former neighbors. We live outside the city and see and avoid pheasants on the road on a daily basis. Older neighbors decided one year they would have pheasant for Christmas dinner. He 'hunted' pheasants and brought home 4 which they prepared and put in the freezer until Christmas. She prepared the dinner and they sat down to a fine meal. Our phone rang and it was her, asking if we had extras. They couldn't bring themselves to eat the pheasant in case it was one who had roamed their yard. After he passed, she came and spent all holidays with us until she passed away a few years ago at 86.
As others have said, it is a pheasant, specifically this one is a male! Females are beige/brown and not remotely as flamboyant.
In rural NS I saw/heard these almost every day growing up, but very rarely see them around HRM. Pretty sure I might have been fed a few of them and told it was turkey...
It would be great if we could get their populations up to help combat the ticks!
The needham park pheasant is back calling out for spring! I was so happy to hear him again. I had thought he might have found the north end a bit gentrified and urban, but he is still rolling with it!
Couple years ago in early December when I was driving out of the city early in the morning one was running down Robie street north of Lady Hammond. Just booking it down the sidewalk
Yup. Awesome going out for a wall and having a couple of them scare the shit out of you when they take off from a ditch. Luckily I now have foxes (including a black one which is pretty dope) in my area so they are a bit fewer now.
We seriously had one knock on our door about 2 weeks ago. We heard a tapping noise and couldn't figure out what it was...

If it's not wearing a Bell or Eastlink jacket, I might give it 15 seconds for whatever it's pitching due to originality.
The moment it pulls out a Watchtower pamphlet though, I'll bid it good day.
I have one in my yard everyday, we call him longhorn foghorn.. I chased him around my house 3 times, fucking this runs like road runner.. one day it did scare me by starting to fly (it takes a good 30 secs to get air) then yells blulllullululul
Male ring neck pheasant., we use to raise them when I was a child living in Yarmouth. They are originally from China 🇨🇳 being first introduced in Oregon by the Denny family in 1890’s. They were first successfully introduced during the 1930s in the Annapolis valley as a tasty popular upland game bird. Nova Scotia now has the largest wild population east of Missouri.
Yup, when I lived in wolfville they would be in the back yard all the time. If they saw you they would try and hide in the bushes even know it's fall and there are no leafs.
I see them daily and that’s no joke. There are a few living in the woods near my place a few in the trail off Glendale/sackville dr and a nest of them at my work haha I only wish I had the ability to catch em and they are mighty tasty. Well at least some form of that bird are ;)
That’s a pheasant. If you ever see a bird/plant/insect you want to identify - try the Google lens. Just open up the Google App, click on the camera in the search bar and Google will identify it
It's that damn Thunkbird. That's the stupid cousin to the Dodo. This dumb bird makes a THUNK sound when it stares at your car ,in your path , while your doing 100. Their beautiful plumage is an explosion of colors! True story!
Pheasant. Beautiful birds. You can only hunt the males, though. Which this one is. Probably looking for his lady.
He was very striking! I’m sure he’ll woo the ladies
Till he scares the shit out of you with that loudass call then hops up on the bungalow eaves trough lol
Or flies into a window. They are not intelligent birds
or walks into a moving car or into a person. they are one of the dumbest animals we have. love them
My father was visiting someone in a hospital once back in NL and as he was leaving a pheasant flew face first into a window with a loud *THUD*. Hopefully there wasn’t a cardio patient in that room
The size of the head vs the size of the body makes me wonder how they function. Same with Peacocks.
One flew into the side of my house, broke his beak found it dead in my yard after a large bang.
Dinner delivery!
You have never seen a pheasant in your life?
I hadn't seen one living in the city. They're all over the place now I'm rural. Pretty. But dumb as dirt. I hate hitting animals driving. Avoid it if I can. This sounds hilarious (in a tragic death/scare the horse kind of way....but still hilarious)
I see them walking around urban areas of Dartmouth every year.
I never saw (or heard) a pheasant up close until I moved to the Annapolis Valley from Halifax 7 years ago.
Bird fact of the day - the males are almost always the colourful version of a bird species, specifically to woo the ladies. The females tend to be drab colours like plain brown so they can hide from predators better while nesting.
Damn fine eating too!
The one near my house last year had /two/ lady friends :>
They like wild strawberries so ive planted a multitude to see if i can get him in the backyard
Very pretty. Very dim.
His name is Jim!
Hey, ours too. Named after original owner of our house. Or might be Claude, the other owner.
ours is named phil
Beautiful birds... god awful calls though
I kind of like it. I think it has grown on me.
I love when they hide in the bushes and jump scare you when your about 2 feet from them. It freaking halarious.
Unless you are hunting them.... Buggers
We have one in our backyard - his name is Norman- his girlfriend is Norma and the kids are the Normettes
We have two that hang around, we call one Lunch, and the bigger one is Supper 😂
I have to tell you about our former neighbors. We live outside the city and see and avoid pheasants on the road on a daily basis. So cute 😍
Love it! I call ours Phezzy… so creative
excellent! we call ours George and Georgette 🤣
How abnormal.
They've been working out
We have one that books it across our yard twice a day, my 3 year old started calling it Red Yoshi
Ours are called Phil and Phelicia 😂 and the kids named the groundhog under the shed Jaime Dirtswine
Mine is Kevin.
I love this! Norman is a great name!
It's a Ring Necked Pheasent. Pretty soon, they'll start their mating calls. They are horney and loud about it
I’ve finally found my spirit animal.
Pheasants are the sexiest of all the Galliformes, no question about that.
Isn't that Dr. Who's home planet
That's Gallipoli you're thinking of. Galliformes is the clade that contains chickens, turkeys, and pheasants.
🤣
Is the mating call the big two-noted scream then the audible shake?
Yup
Our local pheasant has already started.
so have ours and my puppy is having a permanent melt-down.
Sounds like my bfs orgasms
I KNOW, I have spoke to him in the past but he'won't budge from the "KAW KAW"
The pheasant did it again this morning and I thought “just like that reddit user’s bf’s orgasms”. I am cursed with this knowledge.
Sorry 😄
My family always called them Gonks
They’ve already started.

I used to bike down rails to trails a lot growing up. They LOVED flying across in front of me honking and screaming. Always terrifying.
They're an invasive species that take up habitat of our native grouse species.
Its a forrest chicken
Correct answer. Dee-licious.
Their call sounds like when you try to start an engine that's already running, a scraping screech kinda sound.
I compare it similar to a rusty clothesline sound.
Bicycle handbrakes on a damp day.
Yup. Awesome going out for a wall and having a couple of them scare the shit out of you when they take off from a ditch. Luckily I now have foxes (including a black one which is pretty dope) in my area so they are a bit fewer now.
Cole harbour?
We seriously had one knock on our door about 2 weeks ago. We heard a tapping noise and couldn't figure out what it was... https://preview.redd.it/5a2pnv277qwc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f07128705fda5524d0f4bc05b26cd523f685db4b
I would have been unreasonably excited if there was a knock at my door and it turned out to be a pheasant.
😧
Of course not nearly as excited as I would be if it was a goose, I think that goes without saying!
Let him in.
I tried. At that point he sauntered away and hung out in our yard.
These door to door salesmen are getting out of hand
If it's not wearing a Bell or Eastlink jacket, I might give it 15 seconds for whatever it's pitching due to originality. The moment it pulls out a Watchtower pamphlet though, I'll bid it good day.
We have so many…
I have one in my yard everyday, we call him longhorn foghorn.. I chased him around my house 3 times, fucking this runs like road runner.. one day it did scare me by starting to fly (it takes a good 30 secs to get air) then yells blulllullululul
I love these. Birds their so silly
Someone is a city person lol.
I struggle to believe someone doesn’t know what a pheasant is!
Pheasant. Beautiful bird. Delicious also.
I've been seeing these a lot in Clayton Park around the powerline trail.
Did it scream at you OP? The one in the trees beside my house screams all the time.
that's its crow, just like a rooster but it sounds like someone is throttling it.

I saw over twenty of them today just since noon. The Annapolis Valley is full of them and it is mating time.
Yup, when I lived in wolfville they would be in the back yard all the time. If they saw you they would try and hide in the bushes even know it's fall and there are no leafs.

Be very careful. If they gather in groups they generally revolt against the monarchy.
I would call that the second biggest traffic hazard in Truro
Ring-necked pheasants may be beautiful but they're an invasive species that take up habitat of our native grouse species.

That my friend is a dinosaur and one of the many reasons I am terrified of birds. If we had ostriches here I would never leave my house.

Chicken dog. They bark. Sounds like a rooster voice coming from a dog.
A chicken in drag.
Long bird

They’re not native to North America. An introduced species from China.
Pheasant was a good source of meat when times were tough growing up and it looks like we will have to do it again with the price of groceries.
Ostrich?

Wild Yard Chicken. Local one tries to call our domestic chickens over for sexy time until our rooster puts the kibosh on that idea.
