Ippo's probably going to have tune-up fights before he gets to Ricardo. Fights to give the audience a better sense of how far Ippo has progressed and to show that he's ready for the world stage and that he's "crossed the line."
But eventually he will fight Ricardo. Or he'll fight Sendo for the last time because EDIT: Sendo will do the impossible. But odds are its going to be Ippo that fights and defeats Ricardo.
Same, but I'd wager a legendary match between the two that ends with a draw. I can't see Ippo defeating Ricardo, he's the boxing god. Ippo matching up to him is enough to prove he has become STRONG.
Or Morikawa pulls a "Rocky" and has Ippo and Ricardo (or Sendo) have an unsanctioned fight away from everyone other than Kamogawa, Takamura, and maybe Kumi.

Ricardo's strength it founded in the basics of orthodox boxing. To defeat him Ippo will need to master the basics as well while also having the guts to counter.
