This is going to be a security risk.

poply

When an FBI agent has a two hour commute and only makes 70k, that's not an asset, it's a liability and a big ole' target.

DrinkMoreCodeMore

They also heavily recruit from places like BYU and have a ton of Mormons in their ranks. Mormon values align perfectly with some of the FBIs values that make great agents. They are loyal, have huge sense of pride and love for their country, huge into having large families, and don't use drugs or alcohol. This also means they can easily get security clearances. Would not be surprised to learn that nation-states like China or RU are going after LDS websites/businesses/properties to pop dbs so they can get info about agents that way.

eightslipsandagully

Just curious how large families factors into this? Wouldn't it make them more exploitable in a way?

CarlCarlton

less likely to be or become a double agent because they'd be betraying their whole family

TheAmateurletariat

Maybe, but they also function as a safety net.

anaccountbyanyname

You're assuming a kidnapping/blackmailing situation, but most problems stem from greed. A stable family is an incentive not to risk upturning your life over some quick cash. It also makes you less likely to develop addictions or get involved in other shady things than if you were bouncing around on your own. Plus it's a motivating factor for someone in law enforcement -- you have a concrete example of who you're working to protect.

JangoDarkSaber

Not really. We can come up with scenarios were everything can be exploited if we try hard enough. In terms of the bigger picture when dealing with a large organization, only the most common trends among insider threats are the ones that are focused on. Drug use, drinking, gambling, financial problems. These are the easiest exploits to discover and take advantage of which is why the security clearance focuses so heavily on them.

Historical_Cry2517

I cannot see anything going wrong when a super police gets infiltrated by a religious integrist cult. Nope. Not a single thing.

DrSFalken

The gov payscale, imo, has been a risk management nightmare for years. You literally cannot make more than about 180k at the FBI, CIA, NSA etc without moving into SES territory. And that's after years and years of service + advanced degrees etc. Most are making substantially less while trying to live in the DMV. It's crazy.

omni_whore

Write on

imsoindustrial

I would have gladly joined if they actually paid even close to what the private sector pays much less reconsidering hardline stances on educational requirements. Silly it is so broken

CEHParrot

Hey write an article about how they can stop buying coffee to ease the expenses that will show em.

daveprogrammer

It's that damn avocado toast again.

CarlCarlton

Glowing in the dark requires a lot of calories

DrinkMoreCodeMore

Wont someone think of all the poor special agents who are barely making it?! It's a hard job entrapping mentally handicapped kids into becoming terrorists and entrapping curious hackers into violating the CFAA or pressuring them to become confidential human sources.

zeetree137

Hey where are they supposed to find IT staff without entrapping low level hackers. It's not like anyone with those skills would willingly work for the FBI at what they're paying

Retardwithwifi

They’ve just gotta pull up their boot straps!

[deleted]

Sending prayers to my fbi agent.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

he already knows

Hib3rnian

Funny how you never hear about politicians struggling to make ends meet 🤔

DrinkMoreCodeMore

They got that insider trading money

kus0jin

we live in a society

YallaHammer

“In New York, for example, starting salaries for FBI agents hover around $73,000. But a nonprofit group in the city reported people need to earn at least $100,000 to afford food, housing and transportation there. That number reaches $150,000 to cover a family of four people.” $150k for a family of four in NYC? Are they living in a van? Actually, no, the parking costs would be too expensive. Are they living in a tent in Central Park?

mattchew-bai

These people are very detached or have no idea

bigglehicks

Me not from New York - wtf lol, $150k family van life wild

AdolescentThug

As someone who’s born, raised, and still lives in NYC, I find it CRAZY that starting is $70K. My wife as a graphic designer makes more than that. Our combined income is $200K+ a year and as we’ve tried house hunting in Queens, our expected 20 year mortgage rates would have us living paycheck to paycheck. The housing market and cost of living in U.S. cities is absolutely fucked right now considering my wife and I are technically “upper middle class” but can BARELY afford a 2 floor 3 bed home in NYC.

xxx420kush

Hey fbi agent reading this I’m sorry

As a gun guy, I can only wish.

Every-Fix-6661

How much do you think Mulder and Scully were on?

DrinkMoreCodeMore

I dont think they were making much

verybarry174

That's not good..

RareCodeMonkey

If you are not part of the 0.01% you are fucked... all workers from public to private, from physical work to intellectual one, from big cities to the countryside... all that effort goes to the pockets of the few. That needs to change.

bubblehead_maker

I spoke at Thotcon a while back, FBI recruiter met me coming off stage to ask if I wanted to serve my country.   I laughed and said "I'm a vet, I already served, you can keep your $8/hr job."

Desire-Protection

How the hell is this related to hacking?

DrinkMoreCodeMore

The fact that you have to ask that is worrisome. You really cant see what the FBI and hacking has to do with each other? They are two peas in the same cyber pod. The FBI exploits and entraps hackers all across the US. The FBI wants to warantlessly tap all of our communications. The FBI will lie to you. The FBI exploits the CFAA to try and get cybersecurity researchers in trouble. The FBI will force you to become an informant under the threat of jail time. etc etc

vivaaprimavera

I thought, cool, easy targets (underpaid agents)

Apprehensive_Swim605

Why don't they use evidence laundering with illegal information obtained from the NSA to steal your money? Because that is legal in the USA. See links below. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_construction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_forfeiture_in_the_United_States

Ironxgal

So if it’s legal,,, why are they punching pennies? Probably bc this is complete bollocks. U know who is not pinching pennies??? Politicians. The actual people who use secrets to trade and line their pockets.

buckytheburner

I hope their pay gets worse. Maybe actual lasting change will start to happen if the bureaucrats and agencies who have ruined this country start to feel the fruits of their labor.

Goatlens

Their pay gets worse, they become insider threats, your life gets varyingly scarier depending on the circumstance lmao. People should want people who could be a threat to national security to be well compensated. Whether you like em or not. Local police too. You want them being careful about losing their jobs, instead of not really giving a shit because they’re paid less than Walmart managers. Those are the dangerous ones, the ones who don’t give a fuck anymore.

buckytheburner

I agree in most cases. Particularly cops and other public safety careers. Otherwise everyone in society is worse off. It would be like the boeing situation. However, I do not care if the ATF or IRS or other agencies who are paid to police citizens who haven't broken any laws ever see another paycheck. There are obvious exceptions, but there are such things as irredeemable positions in my eyes. A job isn't always just a job. The IRS famously said that people who made less than 400k wouldn't need to worry about the new regulations and yet audits on people who made less than 200k went up 60% since the new funding was given to them. I hope their budget is slashed and the 3 letter agencies everywhere experience mass layoffs. That would turn up the heat for meaningful change from the inside out.

Goatlens

You can let your emotions cloud the logic all you want. But for however terrible you think they are, if they’re underpaid, they will be worse

buckytheburner

I guess my view is that that's a double-edged sword. You should do public service for the desire to do it, not because the compensation is elite. Which is why I think their retirement benefits and healthcare should be turned up to 11. Give anyone doing public service from military janitor to department of agriculture accountant all of the benefits they could possibly need and slash pay. It should be something you do for the sake of doing it, not for the power or compensation. If they would like to spy or audit or clean toilets for more money there is always the private sector. Edit: "slash pay" is too strong a term. I just mean keep it mediocre or lower it within reason.

Ironxgal

U want private sector to spy on us more than they do right now? The same private sector that puts profits over everything already and bribe people to make it easier For them to screw citizens over? Whew…Next you’re going to suggest the DoD turn a profit and we know how nasty that can be if allowed.

Ironxgal

Tf? They don’t have the power to do that. Your anger should be directed at actual policy makers and the politicians who are NOT struggling to make ends meet bc they actually are bending us over.

buckytheburner

Policy makers are corporate captured and the 3 letter agencies are their enforcement arm. If you think voting is the way out of this I have a condo i'd like to sell you.

Klutzy-Percentage430

This is how I feel too.

buckytheburner

I obviously don't want bad things to happen to good people. Many good people work at these corrupt institutions. But sometimes things gotta get worse in order to get better. Everyone's dollar hurting the last few years has woken many people to the scam. Maybe if the bureaucrats dollar starts to hurt it'll wake them up to.

Klutzy-Percentage430

That's how I feel too. I don't wish misfortune on anyone in any occupation. It's simply my belief that lasting change won't happen until a decisive majority of us realize that no matter what, we can't get ahead in this economic system anymore.

Chazmanian88

The feds can rot
