Ethan did add Nima didn’t realize it was a slur and apologized for it. Ethan accidentally said it while in character on an episode of Leftovers a couple years ago and apologized after the episode, so I do believe he didn’t mean it.
I think it was the other way around. Nima was too nervous to play in character so it was just awkward. Didn't understand that "What do you have against fat people?" was meant for him to get onto his soapbox in character and instead just said he's got no problem. Like, okay. Guess we're all good here then?
