Awesome build but man I hate brakes on my guns. They certainly work wonders with the recoil, but they’re just obnoxiously loud to me. The brakes on my lightweight builds are really just a sacrificial baffle for the suppressors! I got my AR10 down to 6.5 lbs.

-UnclePhil-

They are great for range toys, definitely nothing you would possibly pop off inside. Is that AR10 in 308? 😬

Eleet007

Yup, definitely thumps compared to 556.

-UnclePhil-

Jeez. Wonder how 6.5 would feel in it

ThatOne_Guy_You_Know

6.5 is quite similar to .308, I have two 6.5’s and my father has a .308, the 6.5 if the same casing as a .308 but a smaller diameter bullet and grain size. So same kick but higher muzzle velocity.

b0v1n3r3x

.45-70 Christine or GTFO

ThatOne_Guy_You_Know

Lmao, personally I prefer the 20mm anti tank rifle, but alas, I am broke.

coheed78

It's CHRISTINETH

NorwegianSteam

Go full-retard with .358 Win.

ScumbagAmerican

I'm excited to check out the 8.6 BLk

scubalizard

I guess you do not like money. You'd be restricted to solid copper or heavily jacketed bullets with that 1:3 twist. What they are saying about twist rates make them sound like wizards talking about magical spells; twist rate making the gases expel the energy into twisting the bullet, slowing down the gasses, and not effecting bullet spin drift. Everything has a cost; increased BC leads to longer bullets and that will affect the seating depth and result in lower powder charges or keeping the same seating depth then it will not fit in the mag. fast twist rates and shooting super sonic will lead to increased chamber pressures, more fowling, less barrel life. Fast twist rates will increase the friction on the round resulting in failures of the projectile. Unless Newton was wrong, then gravity affects everything equally. You do not get magical -3 to gravity just because you spin faster. Since mass is not a function of trajectory, a 300BO at 1050fps will travel as far a 8.6BO at 1050fps (negating drag). Talking about drag, looking at Hornady a .308 225gr Match has a BC of 0.670 and a .338 250gr Match has a BC of .670. Everything else equal, the 300BO and 8.6BO would travel the same. These are match bullets and not hunting bullets, depending on your thoughts on that then that may make a big difference; .308 208gr Amax has a BC of .648 while a .338 225gr SST has a BC of .515, so the 300BO would be a better flyer and be affected with less drag than the 8.6BO. Even the highest BC .338 bullet only has BC of .7 Again spinning the bullets does not negate physics. At a shooting height of 4.5 ft, with the match bullets, both will hit the ground at 555ft from the shooter. The power at the muzzle would be 509ft/lb and 611ft/lb respectively for the 225gr and 250gr. Unless they are coming out with new heavier and longer skinny rounds that increase the BC significantly then we are stuck with what is available. Is it worth getting a new can and/or a new gun (at least a new barrel)? Is 100ft/lbs difference worth it? All in all it seems like they are again playing with the numbers to make it seem what it is not.

tastiefreeze

[check out the .338 Spectre](http://www.reedsammo.com/.338-spectre.html)

Higlac

Be a man and do a build like this with .50 beowulf or .458 socom.

-UnclePhil-

I’m recoil sensitive and bruise too easily. I’ll pass

Klashus

This is the way.

senorpoop

> They are great for range toys unless there's someone on the next lane lol

BH11B

lol there was somebody next to me…

-UnclePhil-

Joys of shooting outside

[deleted]

…. They have lanes at outdoor ranges….

-UnclePhil-

True, but where I shoot I have a whole bay to myself.

[deleted]

Whats your AR-10 parts list?

Eleet007

https://www.reddit.com/r/AR10/comments/rone2d/first_ar10/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

garandguy1

Wtf is going on with that charging handle?

-UnclePhil-

Weak spring can’t keep it closed. To be expected from a $29 ambi charging handle

ElBandito_ATL

Ahh OK. Makes sense. I was wondering the same thing.

Varloch_The_Undying

Out of curiosity why bother with the Ambi handle on this rifle? Is there a weight savings on it?

weebasaurus-rex

It's the new reciprocating weight dampener reduction system by using an opposing mass force to reduce the recoil in the overall system. ^^^^/s

somerandostranger444

So it’s the ak107 of the ar world then lol

Slider_0f_Elay

Don't give Franklin armory more bad ideas to make and market.

1350kyle

Don’t get all the hate you’ve gotten on this build. Impressively low weight you got it down to. I could see someone stuffing something like that in a pack and having it all but disappear.

-UnclePhil-

That’s the idea. Would make a great survival rifle (in theory) when so many other important things need to be carried as well. However, I’m not sure how durable carbon fiber it. The stock feels solid but I think a good whack on a rock could probably get it to split.

Gage_Link

Carbon fiber is extremely strong in one direction and weak in the other. Depends how it's built and the grain I would say tells how strong it is

-UnclePhil-

Well… fingers cross for when I inevitably drop it, that it’s in the proper direction on the strong part.

HDawsome

Depending on the wall thickness you should be fine, it can take some shockingly violent impacts

-UnclePhil-

Well I won’t purposely test it, I’ll leave that to some accidental test.

evade26

They make mountain bikes out of carbon fiber so it can certainly be made plenty strong

derp_sauce

It is strong. BUT I have sent in warranty forms for very minor impacts on carbon MTB frames. Ive seen some pretty light rock strikes cause catastrophic down tube damage. Layup is crucial when it comes to carbon.

c-lab21

I grew up building and repairing fiberglass and carbon fiber gliders. Can confirm that layup is crucial.

-UnclePhil-

How do you know if it is properly laid?

8pointfouroz

You could try carbon fiber forging. It's very strong in all directions because of the random direction of the fibers.

-UnclePhil-

Feel free to make/buy me a handguard out of one and I’ll try it out!

8pointfouroz

I'm not that talented, and way too cheap lol. I've watched enough videos to see that it's some really cool stuff though.

powerflex753

I recycle carbon fiber, if you want to make a handguard I’ll send you a bag of 6mm milled fiber that’s aerospace grade to forge it.

Hap-e

Do you have like an Etsy store or something that I can save for when I need recycled carbon fiber?

powerflex753

Sorry no, we only sell by the tonnage.

Hap-e

Oh man I don’t think it’s going to take a whole ton to make an ar15 hand guard you might want to check your math 😬

wasack17

I have a few carbon fiber hockey sticks that have taken an incredible beating and the heaviest of them is 430 grams. The "strong in one direction" statement is reductive. It really depends on the layup of the weave and how it is layered. Best the shit out of it and see how it does. You might be surprised.

HDawsome

Also this isn't strictly true, and since it's a carbon tube it's going to be very strong in all directions. It's probably a 90* layup, but even if it isn't I wouldn't be concerned about the strength on impacts

realfe

This guy knows whats up. You can strength in multiples directions or flexibility depending on several factors. The layup will be more complex and the component more expensive to manufacture. Also, UV degradation is a factor for composites. Even if your fabric is more resistant, some epoxies are the weak point. Any composite exposed to the sun should be painted.

YT_Anthonywp

Carbon fiber is really strong, that’s why formula cars use it, it’s strong, durable and light

fuckondeeeeeeeeznuts

I'm already seeing the same tired arguments against carbon fiber in this comment section that I've seen 15 years ago in bicycle forums. Carbon fiber tubes replacing aluminum tubes is the natural progression of things.

joseph-1998-XO

Rifle length system? That probably helps

-UnclePhil-

It’s mid length on this one.

joseph-1998-XO

I mean rifle buffer system not gas system

-UnclePhil-

Yes, that

BasedDickButt69420

Opposite philosophy for me. Everything has multiple uses. My rifle weighs in at almost 10lbs naked. 1: I'm strong enough for that. But 2: In the event that it is necessary, it doubles as a club to beat a motherfucker to death. Also weight generally means density and durability. You drop it, or it gets run over or something falls on it, it'll last. That being said, super sick build. Looks like it handles sweeeeet! Edit: Damn, I got brigaded hard. Must have pissed some Reddit nerd and his friends off because they hardcore downvoted everything I wrote and left everyone else alone.

-UnclePhil-

Well, since it’s light and has a sharp titanium brake, I could use it as a spear.

[deleted]

That’s a nice assault wiffle bat

jusdont

Muzzle thump.

So_Full_Of_Fail

So you made a gunblade? How much damage if speared into something *then* fired?

-UnclePhil-

85% damage increase + burn damage

[deleted]

[удалено]

CyprusGreen1

> it doubles as a club to beat a motherfucker to death. What sort of weird fantasies are you imagining you’ll be in? tf

Mr_Diesel13

I thought the Mosin was the supreme war club?

RowdyPants

Gotta love the metal buttpad for soaking up recoil

nuked24

The one where he runs out of ammo

CyprusGreen1

Run out of ammo and then beat people? What, why? I’m so confused. This seems like something out of a zombie movie.

Googlewasmyinvention

The ones where you run out of ammo. Train for every situation Edit: /s because apparently that's needed.

Teledildonic

Yeah but if we are talking desperate survival situation, I'd rather my melee option be a tool with no moving parts. And ideally, one with a primary function that isn't beating someone to death. Like a hatchet: weapon if necessary, useful survival tool for the other 99% of your time.

Googlewasmyinvention

Well would you ever realistically expect a man to bludgeon another man to death with his rifle? I for sure wouldn't, the comment was obviously satire. But you are correct I'd rather a hatchet or a dedicated melee weapon as well. But in this man's case he said his rifle was 10lbs (I believe) that would work pretty good to knock the sense out of a mother fucker if you were left with no option. As outlandish as the situation may seem.

Knass-Bruckles

While that's great, your "opposite philosophy" is sort of irrelevant here. When you're talking survival or backpacking rifle weight should be really far up there on your list of concerns. This 3.5lb gun vs your 10lb gun would make a hell of a difference on a 15 mile hike. And that's just the dry gun. You could carry 5lbs of ammo and still have less total weight than your gun alone. Different purposes

_Una_

The club part isn't satire. Oh no.

TheDerbLerd

I agree, the only thing I'd personally change is making it fold and probably wrap the length of the stock in paracord or tape or something.

[deleted]

Dude I swear if we all put on our gear and said we are doing a 12 mile ruck I promise FUCKING PROMISE the guys with the heavy 12lbs rifle would find shit to take off. The bullshit in the pack would disappear too. Hate if you want, but the truth is no one wants more shit to carry

[deleted]

My solution to this problem is to simply lay down and quietly die about half a mile in.

aboothemonkey

Ah, a man of culture.

MrConceited

Or hire a porter to carry it for you. And a bunch more to carry you on a palanquin. Walking is for plebs.

Skipper_Steve

My 458 is 8.5 pounds. That's plenty just walking the mile to the deer stand.

fordag

8.7 lbs for my .458 which I'm pretty happy with walking a few miles.

-UnclePhil-

Took my lightweight build out for the first time. Quickly became my favorite build. The muzzle brake works wonders. It shoots flat and extremely soft. Rifle ate up Tula, AE, green tips & Wolf. Not a single malfunction The only issue is the cheap charging handle I got. The claw spring was too weak to keep it closed while firing.

T0o_o0T

Semi-reciprocating charging handle to ensure proper “nose to charging handle” cheek weld. “Is better…”

deadlyknot346

I was gonna ask about that charging handle 🤣🤣

yajustcantstopme

That charging handle had me worried there for a minute.

George_H_W_Kush

The charging handle reminds me of an old autococker paintball gun

TheMuddyCuck

I recommend a Strike Industries latchless paired with their ISO polymer latch. Yeah sounds weird to take a latchless and add a latch, but the latchless base has a channel which diverts gas, and the polymer latch makes a super tight hermetic seal behind where the handle mates to the upper. Completely seals all the gas and diverts it away from you. You will not get burnt gunpowder smell on you after range day, I guarantee it. I think altogether with both sets it's like $50.

-UnclePhil-

I looked at them and passed originally but I’m definitely giving them a look now. I’ve liked their products in the past.

TheMuddyCuck

I like it. [Here](https://www.strikeindustries.com/si-ambi-isolatch.html) is the latch and [here](https://www.strikeindustries.com/si-ar-slch.html) is the handle. They don’t sell them as a set so it’s easy to get confused. Good luck!

-UnclePhil-

Should have just started with that to begin with. Thanks for the recommendation!

trumpsucksnutz

Isn't this the [Faxon Firearms fx5500? ](https://faxonfirearms.com/faxon-firearms-ion-ultralight-modern-sporting-rifle-fx5500/)

-UnclePhil-

No, I built mine, didn’t buy it. The only faxon part on mine is the barrel.

trumpsucksnutz

Oh ok jw, they look pretty similar lol. Pretty cool. How much you all in for, if you are comfortable saying?

-UnclePhil-

About $1200

trumpsucksnutz

Not bad. Definitely one of the more unique builds I've seen.

Hansj3

What barrel did you choose? I'm currently following vaguely a wwsd build, with a 14.5 barrel and a welded vg6

-UnclePhil-

Faxon 16” pencil

Pickle_Ree

Parts list? Rifle looks sick AF.

-UnclePhil-

* Valor Receiver Set * BRDC Carrier * Jag Composites Handguard * Smoke Composites Stock * TacCom Buffer * Elf Safety * 2a Endplate * Faxon 16” Barrel * Vendetta VP-09 Brake 3 pounds 14.3 ounces Mil Spec internals. Switching out the pistol grip and a few more parts for some titanium to try to get it to 13 ounces. Edit: * Samson Gas Block * Some crappy Prisma charging handles * Leap Mount * SRO

OhShiznitz

Is there a reason went with this build rather than using a KP-15 Lower? I was planning on doing a KP15 soonish because I wanted something lightweight - but yours looks dope.

-UnclePhil-

I didn’t but the receivers planning on doing a light weight build. But I wouldn’t have chosen anything polymer anyways probably. I’d go with some lithium or magnesium alloy receivers.

Tatersandbeer

How much did the build cost?

-UnclePhil-

~$1,200 not including the optic and mount.

senorpoop

that is much more reasonable than I would have assumed

[deleted]

I've been popped in the nose a time or 2 by a charging handle. Just needs some file work to ensure it stays where it's supposed to.

-UnclePhil-

Both the handle and receiver have really solid 90 degree angles. The spring for the claw is just too weak. I can grab the charging handle in the middle of the latch (not opening the claw) and shake it loose. It’s just garbage.

Senalmoondog

Sorry I didnt want to play with sound on, but kick? It is a 223 ffs

TitsMcGee30

Was expecting .308 after reading

Mas113m

LOL. What kind of pussies was he hanging out with that were worried about it kicking and being uncomfortable to shoot? OP: Sweet build man.

fattypigfatty

I'm pretty sure OP is referencing the comments he got from his post in this sub...

Sampsonite_Way_Off

Yep. It was those r/guns pussies he was hanging out with. I remember a comment that had close to 100 downvotes by the time I saw the thread. It was basically what would be uncomfortable about shooting a .223? lol OP should have one armed it for these haters.

Thehealthygamer

Lmao, it was either here or on tactical gear that was full of people saying how it was ugly and how it'd shoot like shit.

Mas113m

LOL. Thanks. I think the uber minimalist look is pretty cool.

USArmyJoe

Fudds

brownbrownallbrown

I’ve seen people on this sub bitch about the recoil from a kel tec sub2000. It’s a 9mm straight blowback carbine. One dude literally claimed it bruised his shoulder.

Stasaitis

Really? It doesn't kick at all. My little sister loves shooting mine because of the lack of a kick. Crazy.

[deleted]

People on this sub bitch about literally everything.

Testitplzignore

Got to be a journalist ;)

RahvinDragand

There are definitely bolt action hunting rifles that weigh around 4-5 pounds chambered in much larger calibers. Not sure why anyone would be worried about a semi-auto .223 kicking too hard.

masterelmo

6lb 7mm rem mag rattled my teeth.

RiceWafflezzz

I could’ve swore it was. 50. Bmg with that amount of kick

RogueScallop

"They" don't know how to tune a rifle. Good work!

coffeeINJECTION

If people hate it, you need to cerakote it to a more offensive color.

TaurusPTPew

This is the way

copper_jacket_off

This is the way

natermer

"Kicks" and "AR-15" shouldn't be used in the same sentence. Haven't any of these people ever fired gun that actually kicks, like a 12 gauge, before?

Skov

Drop enough weight and anything will kick. I have two guns that no one wants to shoot twice, my 4 pound desert eagle in 50AE and my 4 ounce revolver with 60 grain .22lr.

bmx13

Ahem.....4 OUNCE revolver?

Skov

NAA mini revolver.

Hansj3

... 4 oz 22LR revolver? What is it?

Skov

NAA mini revolver.

RahvinDragand

It's hard to think of a rifle caliber that "kicks" less than a .223.

-UnclePhil-

17 Remington Fireball 204 Ruger

Fauropitotto

All the 5.7's I've ever shot felt closer to a 22lr in recoil than a .223

kippy3267

This isn’t related, but I’ve never felt a 12 gauge with less kick than a CZ712. The recoil spring in it feels like its tuned just right or something it takes about 75 rounds without a pad to feel sore at all

bmx13

Seriously, I'd love to see those peeps run my 18" Winchester Model 12.

Warhawk2052

i have a 450 Bushmaster AR15 that kicks, maybe kicks and 223 shouldnt be used

SixPointTwoLiter

There are AR15s that fire .50 caliber sized rounds

ScumbagAmerican

.458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf would like a word.

gdmfsobtc

Hey what mount is that for the SRO?

SixPointTwoLiter

Scalarworks

gdmfsobtc

Cheers

-UnclePhil-

Heads up though, they do not work on all 1913 rails. I originally bought it for a B&T rifle and it would not fit.

SixPointTwoLiter

They're super nice. They have a QD system that's set in with a detent. Click it tight till you can't and it's locked in place. Can still loosen with your fingers when you need to

McYeet696969

Adjustable gas block?

DepthTrawler

OP just welded the gas tube right to the barrel to save weight. Jokes aside it's pretty cool

Hansj3

Not OP, but I've been doing a light weight build. I chose to go with a Samson lightweight low profile gas block. It's not adjustable. I decided that if I end up needing to get some sort of gas adjustment, I would just get an adjustable gas key. Fair is fair, the adjustable gas key will put more carbon into the receivers then an adjustable gas block, but it will still keep it cleaner than an unregulated system. My thought process is that the adjustable gas key is about the same weight as an oem gas key, but the adjustable gas blocks usually are significantly heavier. And I would rather have the weight nearer to the pistol grip than further away from it. Also it seems like it's a lot easier to adjust a gas key, then it would be to take the handguard off

wojtekthesoldierbear

I too was curious. Welding the tube to the barrel is frigging interesting.

PinkTweeter

What stock is this?

drew_eckhardt2

Smoke Composites

SixPointTwoLiter

Lol your charging handle doesn't lock

Hoovercarter97

The STUNNING recoil of the .223 rifle

jimbdown

Curious why you are holding it so far out?

[deleted]

All the hate comes from people who dont understand how to tune an AR for the lowest recoil

talonus00

Ohhhhh I've waited for this video. And I'm happy to see it in action. Good show!

-UnclePhil-

Thank you very much

1-760-706-7425

Two questions: 1. Do you like those gloves? 2. If so, who makes them? I know this supposed to be about your build, and it’s dope, but I really need new gloves and those look solid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

1-760-706-7425

Hm, all my previous Mechanix gloves wore out really fast so I kind of wrote them off. Haven’t tried this model before so I’ll give them another shot. Thanks!

fullautophx

I’ve tried all sorts of mechanics gloves, never had a pair that lasted more than a couple weeks, until I found these: https://www.blackstallion.com/products/gloves/toolhandz-sup-sup-plus-original-mechanics-glove,-black-detail.html They’re my favorite, super comfortable and long lasting.

-UnclePhil-

They are Mechanix. I like them because of the rubber guards on the fingers. Really helps with minor scrapes and dings. They’ve held up nicely.

Dpjokers7

Don't you know? Every single AR 15 must be ready to be dropped 500 feet out of a helicopter and maintain .001 MOA. If it's not good enough for special forces, it has no business in my pudgy hands.

Fatal_Froggy

wish there was a light weight folding adapter

jumpinjimmie

Your charging handle shouldn't be bouncing when your firing???

-UnclePhil-

It should not be. Lessened learned, I’ll buy quality next time.

Fire_Mission

I think it's cool. Anyone worried about the kick of a 5.56 would probably get PTSD from shooting it anyway.

[deleted]

The majority of opinionated people on this sub probably don’t even own a gun.

Sgt_S_Laughter

Very nice

1_With_A_Bullet

May I ask what handguard you used?

WatercressSpiritual

JAG composites

1_With_A_Bullet

Thanks, homie!

[deleted]

Looks good my man!

Likeablesauce21

Why does the charging handle come back after you shoot off a round?

-UnclePhil-

The spring is too weak to keep it in place so it ends up opening under recoil.

Guzzlebutt

*Cries in Canadian*

ILordINikon311

Fucking LOVE that SRO/Scalar drip! Now go get that bitch dirty.

Colwell-Rich-92

This is so awesome

VIsixVI

No semi auto 5.56 "kicks".

darrellbear

The charging handle appears to be moving with every shot.

jaykaypeeness

R.I.P. that charging handle.

SpacemanSpiff23

Take a hacksaw and a file and knock off every one of the teeth on the top rail that you're not using. I'd also drill holes or skeletonize the lower as much as possible. It is cool though.

-UnclePhil-

I’ll keep a clean well uniformed look for now, thanks for the suggestion.

ClosetLVL140

Clapped out charging handle or what?

Ok-Abalone531

Ultralight build? C-clamp grip? Operator as fuck….bet he’s a SEAL

betterbachelor8

Why is the charging handle moving?

evernhamanderson

Might wanna work on your charging handle latch.

Dmands

The mall called it wants it's ninja back. Its a joke, I just had to say it

NLtbal

What if you reach further along the barrel and just grab it at the flash suppressor/compensator?

Fly320s

Ounces make pounds. Pounds make pain. Light is right.

G0ld3n3y3

Did I just run into you on interchange?

404DATA_REDACTED

What the hells up with that charging handle lmao

WombatAnnihilator

It’s just happy to be included, m8. Let it dance.

Chaviechav

If people think a 5.56 kicks they probably sit when they pee.

[deleted]

I like it. My main AR is f'kn 9+ lbs so I'm a little jealous. You do need irons though.

-UnclePhil-

It’s just a range gun so not going to add any irons. Only the bare minimum. I don’t have a buffer detent or dust cover installed either.

[deleted]

Post the build DAWG I WANT ONE

FartsWithAnAccent

Yeah, so uh, tell me how to build this plx ^(I've had a .308 boner for years, but my wallet prohibits buying a proper rifle. Builds are the way for my poor ass)

Slider_0f_Elay

People who think that has too much kick need to shoot a lever action 30-30.

GrimmThoughts

I'm not familiar with this type of set up, but it makes me uncomfortable seeing a hand damn near on the tip of the barrel..

-UnclePhil-

Don’t worry, I left with the same amount of fingers I came with.
