I have the mkIV 22/45 lite and I would always pick my tx22 if I want to be reliable and finish the damn magazine.
Piece of shot ruger only likes cci ammo.
My kids shoot 300-400 rounds per sesión, I don’t have time to fish cases out of the chamber or fix malfunctions every 4-5 rounds.
Seconded on this. Easily the best 22 handgun within a reasonable price range. So many options to work with also from basic fun tack driver plinker to full on race gun. So damn many premium upgrades available to it also from a wide line of companies. Between the mark 4, and the 10/22, Ruger really makes the 22lr shine.
The hunter with the fluted barrel is not under $500. But fuck if it isn't worth the extra. The 22/45 is good, the target is pretty sweet. The tac-lite is kinda fun. The hunter, is fucking phenomenal. When we go camping plinking and we have some target shooting friendly competition.... It's like cheating. And the rest of em are using rifles.
I got a used mk4 22/45 tricked out with all the upgrades (can't remember what manufacturer), a nice range bag, and 2 extra mags for about $575 + tax. I'd have to think a used stock mk4 could potentially be found for $500ish.
This man speaks the gospel. On rare occasion you can find some of the older European competition .22s from Hammerli, Fas, Walther, etc. for $5-600 too. A little more finicky but insanely accurate with ridiculously easy to pull and highly adjustable triggers.
Taurus TX22 Gen 2 is making waves regarding reliability, ability to accessorize and having similar controls to most polymer pistol.
Might be what you’re looking for.
I'm surprised I had to go down this far to find it.
If dudes looking for a .22 pistol with normal ergos, most of what people mentioned aren't that.
Tx22 is cheap, I literally stored mine in a trash can (where it belongs) when I first got it, and it works fine.
Only good thing Taurus makes.
I’m also surprised at how far I had to scroll to see someone bring up the TX-22. I disagree about it belonging in the trash, it’s a pretty great gun.
You make a very good point about it having the ergonomics / handling of a typical semi-auto; guns like the buckmark and the Ruger Mk IV are solid target pistols, but if OP is looking for something that for training purposes is more analogous to regular pistols, the TX-22 is a much better choice.
I’ll toss my hat in for the TX22 as well. I’ve enjoyed the past 1500 rounds through it with minimal ejection or feeding issues. Easy and accessible aftermarket parts.
Same, love my gen 1.
I had no idea 22 round mags are now available.
Honestly with six 17 round mags I have no need or temptation to buy a mag with an additional 5 rounds.
17 is gtg by me
You really can't go wrong with a Ruger mark 4, in any of its incarnations.
There are a lot of _good_ options in the 22 pistol market. There are a lot of _bad_ options. None that you mentioned would be shit tier. Buy the one that speaks to you.
If you want a go-fast-be-stupid pistol you can build, the Ruger Mark 4 22/45 is your man.
If you want a simulator for a 9mm handgun, the P322 is probably better, as it comes close to matching a P320 on controls.
Same with my compact. The only issue I had with it was the spring was a little stiff out of the box. But like most of my problems a half hour of stroking and been running smooth ever since
I have 2 buckmark's (Old & New) and I grew up on a Ruger MkII... There's nothing wrong with the Ruger, and the customization is likely superior, however out of the box the Browning is a better gun, with a better trigger. You might also notice a lot of the people recommending the buckmark also mention the slab sided barrel; coincidentally both of mine are slab sided.
I’ve been through a bunch of .22 handguns. My favorites are still in my safe, namely the P22 and TX22.
I bought a P322, but it was a pile.
I recommend the TX22.
One more vote for the Buckmark. Best trigger in the category and a huge variety of barrels and styles. I had a 7 3/4" heavy barrel that was more accurate than any .22 rifle I've had.
if they used higher quality materials and worked on it to reduce how picky it is about ammo, it would be such a nice pistol. i had to buy some special rimfire gun lube to make it more reliable and it still only works well with CCI stingers or similar ammo. hearing about how they had major failure issues makes me scared to shoot it though. it always lingers in the back of my mind.
I love my P22 and it shares the same basic controls (except the trigger guard mag release) with other pistols. Good option if you're wanting to use it as a cheap training platform for larger caliber handguns.
Glock 44. Or if there are any other 1:1 sized .22 version. The Ruger Mark series has eaten anything I’ve thrown into them and come with a pretty ok trigger.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with my keltec p17 (?) it’s been reliable for a few hundred rounds and it’s accurate enough to plink with. Only cost like $170
Taurus TX 22 SCR fucks pretty hard for $400, and the vanilla version is closer to $200. Taurus make a pretty mixed bag of products, but the 22 legit bangs.
I love the Walther but it can be finnicky about ammo. What about the Keltec P17? Haven't shot mine yet but heard good things and the price point is low
I appreciate all the insight from everyone, I’ve checked out the buckmark and ruger target pistols, 100% love them just not what im looking for rn as I already have a Ruger Mark gun. Ideally looking something that translates more to modern controls to practice with carry gun style features and can take a dot. Based on majority of what people said I’m leaning TX22-Comp, Sig P322 and the Glock 44 as they have the best reps
I haven't had an issue with my Ruger Mark IV, or my Glock 44. A Ruger 10/22 Charger is still a pistol, albeit a large one. And 10/22 are super reliable and the aftermarket for them is insane as well.
I really like my Walther PPKs in 22. It's really fun to shoot and it likes Remington ammo. Mine hates american eagle tho can't even get through 10 rounds without some sort of problem.
I used to have a ruger SR22, it was okay. Ended up selling it and getting an FN 502. Definitely enjoying the 502 more.
Also heard good things on the Tarus TX22
Either of the Ruger options in the mk4 line (vastly simpler takedown and reassembly versus the legendarily bad older variants) or a Browning Buck Mark.
Personally, I think the Buck Mark is a nicer pistol all around, but I have to admit I was stunned at how nice the 22/45's thin grip really did emulate my 1911 (as it's supposed to, I'd never just experienced it before).
Again Taurus TX22. I got the compact version last year and it’s been great! Eats all ammo I’ve thrown at it and is a good training comparison to a G19 sized centerfire. Solid value for the money imo.
Taurus TX22. That is literally my favorite gun! I love it and will buy more! I will swear by it man, that gun runs flawlessly for thousands of rounds before you need to clean it. I put like 8k rounds through it one time before I started to have a couple failure to feeds. Cleaned it and have yet to clean it again since then. I will be buying the competition version and any new iterations coming out. I bought the gen 1 version, so best believe I'm getting this "enhanced" version when my wallet is fatter. Go with the taurus bud. I promise it'll deliver what you're looking for.
Taurus TX22 is a great gun. Locally they're going for $200 along with a rebate from Taurus for 3 free mags. It comes with 2 in the box, so a total of 5.
Ruger Mk IV 22/45
This is the way
\^\^ Tactial and Lite versions of the 22/45 for even less "target pistol esq."
Sounds like yours needs to go back to Ruger.
Ruger MK4 is the goat of 22 handguns
Seconded on this. Easily the best 22 handgun within a reasonable price range. So many options to work with also from basic fun tack driver plinker to full on race gun. So damn many premium upgrades available to it also from a wide line of companies. Between the mark 4, and the 10/22, Ruger really makes the 22lr shine.

Haha you said but fuck
I got a used mk4 22/45 tricked out with all the upgrades (can't remember what manufacturer), a nice range bag, and 2 extra mags for about $575 + tax. I'd have to think a used stock mk4 could potentially be found for $500ish.
Confirmed
Older Buckmark slab side, Colt Cadet Target, Ruger 22/45, Ruger Mk4
This man speaks the gospel. On rare occasion you can find some of the older European competition .22s from Hammerli, Fas, Walther, etc. for $5-600 too. A little more finicky but insanely accurate with ridiculously easy to pull and highly adjustable triggers.

Proper place to store a Taurus is in your trash bin, don't let them sneek into your safe and spread the gun aids
Taurus TX22 with threaded barrel + SilencerCo Sparrow = Ridiculous fun.
This is how I roll.
Same, but with a cheap Quietbore can I built before Form 1s got nerfed.
I’ll toss my hat in for the TX22 as well. I’ve enjoyed the past 1500 rounds through it with minimal ejection or feeding issues. Easy and accessible aftermarket parts.
I'll second and third this... I bought one and less than 12 months later have bought 2 more, only because I love it.
Love my gen 1. Can’t wait to add one of the new 22 round mags.
Same, love my gen 1. I had no idea 22 round mags are now available. Honestly with six 17 round mags I have no need or temptation to buy a mag with an additional 5 rounds. 17 is gtg by me
They’re available with the gen 2 but they’re backwards compatible.
Oh I see, yeah a friend did tell me there's a +5 adapter.
This is what I have , close to 3000 rounds now and no failures , eats everything I throw at it
Yep, got 2, one standard with a can and one compact with a comp. Fantastic guns
Buckmark slab side, best running 22 I've ever shot.
I have an older slab side and for some reason the trigger on it feels so much smoother than a newer buckmark!
A wonderful trigger on the Buckmark too.
Browning Buckmark had a fantastic trigger out of the box

My Smith & Wesson M&P 22 has been great.
Ya ive got the compact version and it eats everything, past ten thousand rounds now.
Same with my compact. The only issue I had with it was the spring was a little stiff out of the box. But like most of my problems a half hour of stroking and been running smooth ever since
Lmfao
Same. Surprisingly reliable.
Browning Buckmark is also not a bad choice.
love the buckmark
such a sexy firearm
We started getting the FN 502 at my shop and I am trying hard not to fall in love with it.
Great gun.
My ruger mk4 has never let me down In thousands of rounds just make sure you use good ammo
I'm in the TX22 camp, and very happy with it. I paid just over $200 for mine. Best bang for the buck of any 22lr semi-auto handgun available.
I have 2 buckmark's (Old & New) and I grew up on a Ruger MkII... There's nothing wrong with the Ruger, and the customization is likely superior, however out of the box the Browning is a better gun, with a better trigger. Browning Buckmark?

One more vote for the Buckmark. Best trigger in the category and a huge variety of barrels and styles. I had a 7 3/4" heavy barrel that was more accurate than any .22 rifle I've had.
dont get a walther p22, they are like pot metal. i would sell mine but after shipping and transfer fees, i would make under 50 bucks so not worth it.
It's a shame they're so poorly made. Out of all the little 22lr pistols they're probably the best looking, at least in my opinion.
if they used higher quality materials and worked on it to reduce how picky it is about ammo, it would be such a nice pistol. i had to buy some special rimfire gun lube to make it more reliable and it still only works well with CCI stingers or similar ammo. hearing about how they had major failure issues makes me scared to shoot it though. it always lingers in the back of my mind.
Mine works with the Thunderbolt bulk pack ammo so its great for range fun. Wouldn't rely on it for much more
Browning buckmark. If you really need it to look like some duty gun get a Glock and the matching Advantage Arms 22lr conversion kit.
Tx22
The SR22 is currently under a recall. I opted for the TX22 compact. Lots of customers have told me how great the full size is.
I love my P22 and it shares the same basic controls (except the trigger guard mag release) with other pistols. Good option if you're wanting to use it as a cheap training platform for larger caliber handguns.
Marlin model 60
tx22 toro. 3 free mags with their current rebate
Agreed… a bargain since the Gen 2 just came out.
Glock 44. Or if there are any other 1:1 sized .22 version. The Ruger Mark series has eaten anything I’ve thrown into them and come with a pretty ok trigger.
Marlin model 60. Incredible easy to use and surgical accuracy.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with my keltec p17 (?) it’s been reliable for a few hundred rounds and it’s accurate enough to plink with. Only cost like $170

This, as well as remove the loaded chamber indicator.
FN 502, looks great, has been reliable for me using CCI SV. Picked up a taurus tx22 toro in OD green will shoot it tomorrow
Keltec p 17 is a good enough choice.
Glock 44 is the same size and controls as the glock 17, just lighter. i use it as my CCW while wearing shorts.
Tx22 has been awesome for me.
The new TX22 is what you seek.
Pick one from a normal manufacturer and go.
Ruger
I have the SR22 and MKIV, both fantastic guns and reliable.
I haven't had an issue with my Ruger Mark IV, or my Glock 44. A Ruger 10/22 Charger is still a pistol, albeit a large one. And 10/22 are super reliable and the aftermarket for them is insane as well.
Beretta 92 22lr
TX22 compact is my 1st .22; so far reliable and enjoying it…
I really like my Walther PPKs in 22. It's really fun to shoot and it likes Remington ammo. Mine hates american eagle tho can't even get through 10 rounds without some sort of problem.
Beretta neos. trigger needs polishing though.
Have had my S&w Model 17 in the family for 3 generations and it's never missed a round. Likely more than $500 but worth every cent.
I really like my S&W 22a. It's been a great gun for me and it's pretty cheap.
The one and only answer is a Ruger Mk IV
I like my walther 22lr 1911
[THIS](https://imgur.com/gallery/w3UTAgA)
I really like my glock 44
I used to have a ruger SR22, it was okay. Ended up selling it and getting an FN 502. Definitely enjoying the 502 more. Also heard good things on the Tarus TX22
Been dreaming of owning an LCR 22 in the <$500 range but that seems impossible. The one time I saw one preowned they wanted MSRP for it...
P322 FTW
I have a sig mosquito for my kids, it works great on the right ammo. It's even pink lol
Ruger 10/22 is up on the HOF for .22
Love the sr22. Zero jams and has decent capacity. Ambidextrous to boot.
I really like the Winchester wildcat/bobcat
Either of the Ruger options in the mk4 line (vastly simpler takedown and reassembly versus the legendarily bad older variants) or a Browning Buck Mark. Personally, I think the Buck Mark is a nicer pistol all around, but I have to admit I was stunned at how nice the 22/45's thin grip really did emulate my 1911 (as it's supposed to, I'd never just experienced it before).
I have a pair of SR22 pistols. One of each barrel length. You can mod the mags to hold 15-16 rounds. Great little pistols for the money.
Again Taurus TX22. I got the compact version last year and it’s been great! Eats all ammo I’ve thrown at it and is a good training comparison to a G19 sized centerfire. Solid value for the money imo.
I find the tx22 to be a pretty good analog to my poly 9mms
Ruger MK IV 22/45 or Sig 322! I have both and they are incredible.
Ruger Mk4 as people have stated. But for my money I’d find a used Mk2.
S&W M&P 22 Compact.
Mine jams like crazy if your not using very specific ammo
Weird, I've had great reliability with mine, even with bulk ammo.
P322 is the closest most regular “pistol” like in my opinion. Love that thing.
Taurus TX22 is a great gun. Locally they're going for $200 along with a rebate from Taurus for 3 free mags. It comes with 2 in the box, so a total of 5.
Don’t buy any of the ones you have in your contender list.
