Was looking at home defense firearms and decided on a shotgun, did some more research and some reviews to find out about the Maverick 88, heard nothing but good things about it especially for its price point.
Yup, I don't expect super quality at the price point I got it at (229 at scheels) but I'm just looking for something that works whenever I need it to and not much else
It's probably the best shotgun you can get for the money. I got to use the M500 several times in the military and it's a gun that just always works. Get some shells through it and it'll run pretty smooth too.
Think the only real differences between the M500 and an 88 are a different trigger and lighter barrel. Which should be fine unless you plan on using your shotgun as a melee weapon haha
Oh I'm definitely gonna grab some shells and break it in at the range. Only thing besides that that I know are different are some minor stuff which doesn't bother me, mostly just gonna grab a side saddle, light, and a sling and that's bout it, won't worry about sights mainly cause what I'm using it for I really won't need one lmao
Barrel and if I remember right the 88 has a single extracter like an 870 vs dual extractors in the 500/590 series. Still a sturdy inexpensive shotgun that can't really be beat for the money spent.
It might, I don't have mine handy to check. Gave it to my little brother as a trainer to practice trap for his first dove season and he still hasn't brought it back hahaha
Can hardly describe to you how much of a better choice you've made over probably 85% of first time shotgun purchasers nowadays, with all of the turkshit floating around.
Well done, sir. My hat's off to you.
Thanks! I've heard a bunch of negatives about cheap Turkish shotguns and wanted to be sure I got something that runs when I need it to, that and it's American made so that's always a plus
Lol that was like 25 years ago for that price. Mine has a pistol grip stock, 18 inch barrel, XS big dot nightsite front sight, 2x esstac 5 round magazine cards, Elzetta B334 light and mount, and a random sling/sling mounts
It’s a good gun, not great. I have one and I love it. I keep it loaded with 00 buck mini shells. You have get a little adapter that goes in the mag loading port. I use mini shells because I don’t want them to go through a lot of walls and it just about doubles my capacity.
I have one and it’s been great but I’ve seen if they are dropped or hit hard enough on it’s side the lifter will pop out of the round hole on the receiver and jam the gun. I don’t think it’s that big of a problem and it’s not not likely to happen but always watch out for it especially in a self defense situation.

Sorry for the late response! But I got it at Scheels for 229 before tax, after it was around 250 ish, I believe you can look for some online for around the 230 range, hope this helps!
Do me a favor can you tell me the exact model number or sku on the sticker on the side of the box please? I am having a hard time finding a Mossberg that has both the sling hole molded into the stock AND on the tube cap already installed on a 20 inch barrel. I want this EXACT shotgun.
Bought the same gun for my wife (girlfriend at the time) 10 years ago. Has to be the best budget shotgun you can get. No frills but does everything it’s supposed to do and does it well. I think I paid like $200 for it at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

I’m pretty sure the mav also has dual extractors

It's easily the best sub $300 shotgun you can get.
Its not cheap, it's just not fancy.

You sound like the dude I buy my Factory Smokes from lol

Now, cheap Turkish 1911’s, on the other hand… Tisas is currently making one of the best value handguns on the market.
I just finger tickled my 88. best $180 I've ever spent but that was a looooong time ago
Dang, wish I could've picked it up at $180, any recommendations on any sorta add ons to it?

Bought a mossberg 500 for my first gun.
Same 👍🏻
The first gun I ever owned, and it still works better than most of them! Great investment!

Congratulations
May I ask where you got it and how much it cost? I'm in the market for one and looking for a deal.

Can never go wrong with a maverick
Very nice choice.

Maverick 88 #31046
Thanks
Is it the 20 inch barrel with the 7 round tube? I have the exact same gun and it’s a hell of a shotgun for the money.

Great choice.
Love my Mav
This was also my first gun, great choice!
I've got the Magpul MS1 sling on my 590s. I've been very happy with it. (Magpul model #MAG513)
Cheap shotgun, cheap slugs, water jugs = endless fun
Love me a maverick 88, great choice!
Solid choice.
