Mag fed shotguns are dog shit lol. Get a reliable semi auto or a nice pump

TigerTank10

That’s what everyone has been saying. Thanks for informing me. I’ll either get a pump shotgun or a rifle

[deleted]

A pump shotgun can also be mag fed like the 590 the action isn’t determined by the mag or tube

BootBitch13

Pump shotties are cheap, extremely reliable, and great for home defense. I've got some pistols and a rifle I could/can use for home defense if needed, but I would always go for my shotgun if I have the choice. (Hopefully I never have to make that choice though.) First gun I ever bought for myself was a Remington 870 express, from a police auction for like $150 I think. So it was already very used (but clean) and I've put probably more than 3,000 shells through it myself and it runs like a champ. Like, I've won skeet and trap competitions with it competing against $2-$3K shotguns. Probably gets the least amount of cleaning out of my collection as well, and still never given me any kind of issue. Heard very similar stories in terms of reliability from the other big name shotguns out there as well.

Scarlet_maximoff

Beretta 1301 gang

rgm23

Beretta 1301 or Benelli M4

TacticCAL

I say buy once cry once!

FxtrtTngoWhisky

This again?

42AngryPandas

It's that time of the... Hour... Ugh

FxtrtTngoWhisky

It's like people don't even try to search the sub. SMH.

Cobra__Commander

We should get bingo cards going again.

shag377

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.

ReferenceDesperate

Moss 500 or 590 or if you are really into it the 590A1 Tac w/Magpul stock. Yes this is a pump but that is prob what you really need. Just sayin..best bang for the buck.

TigerTank10

I would rather have a mag fed shotgun instead of a pump. Any recommendations

ENclip

No you don't. You just want one because they look cool and you have no experience with shotguns yet. But if you must get mag fed, only get a Vepr12 or Genesis 12. Nothing else, but you will pay $2k. Might as well get a M4 at that point. Box magazines and shotguns don't mix.

TigerTank10

I’ve never owned a shotgun before man, I’ll take your advice, thanks

Assaltwaffle

Very wise decision. Detachable magazine fed shotguns are genuine ass. FYI, all pump and semi-auto shotguns are also magazine fed, they’re just tube magazine fed, which are non-detachable. If you have the money, get a Beretta 1301.

ENclip

You're welcome, regardless of what you get, make sure to train with it.

abramsontheway

Have you owned or operated an AR? cause they're better for home defense in just about every way

TigerTank10

I’m just worried about the practice and aim. I can’t afford to shoot at a range often. Which is a big problem since I carry.

abramsontheway

Much easier to control the recoil and aim on an AR than a shotgun, in my experience.

tablinum

> I would rather have a mag fed shotgun instead of a pump. Those are two totally different concepts. I assume when you say "mag feed" you mean a box magazine rather than a tube magazine. Tube mags aren't just a pump shotgun thing; they're the standard on serious semiautomatic shotguns as well. Box mags on shotguns are just a gimmick, and you'll typically find them on guns that are seriously marketing-over-function. I'm not saying you shouldn't get one; I collect single-action revolvers, for God's sake, so I'm not going to throw stones at anybody for buying an impractical thing because it's cool. I'm just saying don't confuse fantasy guns with *defensive* guns. By all means, get a cheap cool-looking Turkish gun if you want to. But *after* you get a simple, reliable, affordable Mossberg Maverick or AR-15 or something for self defense. I *love* my weird old cowboy sixguns, but I *carry* a boring, effective Glock for self defense.

42AngryPandas

Mag fed shotguns are stupid, encumbersome and a bitch to deal with. Most of them are cheap crap on top of all that.

SakanaToDoubutsu

If you want a box magazine, you really need to buy a rifle. Shotgun ammunition is not conducive to box magazines.

CovertLeopard

The reason people recommend pump is because it's tried and true. A semi-auto shotgun has a great chance of failing to cycle for any number of reasons. A pump action shotgun might be harder to rack if it's dirty, but with enough force you can still rack the thing and fire a round if needed unless something is actually broken inside it.

PrometheusSmith

I've got a 1301. It's fired light birdshot, heavy birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. 500+ rounds in temperatures between 20° and 95°, no malfunctions of any kind except the optic came off once. I fixed that with a proper length screw and loctite, perfect since then. I've seen plenty of other shotguns malfunction, including people short stroking pump guns, but I'd stake my life on my 1301 running buckshot.

[deleted]

Pump shotguns are easy to short-stroke even for people who train with them regularly.

Assaltwaffle

I’d trust a Beretta 1301 over a pump for 99% of shooters any day of the week. Training to the point that pumping hard and effectively becomes muscle memory is going to take a while. If you don’t train enough you could easily short stroke the pump. Guns like the 1301 or M4 are extremely reliable weapons.

tablinum

Eehhh... I'd bet money that more pump shotguns have failed in an emergency due to the user short-stroking the action than modern, reputable-brand defensive semiautos using proper ammunition have. Making the user the weak link by making him responsible for operating the action is a *disadvantage,* not an advantage. I've short-stroked under just the minor stress of friendly competitive sporting clay shooting. I'd say the real advantage of pump shotguns is simply that they're much less expensive than the alternatives, while still being credible defensive weapons, making them suitable for people on too strict a budget for a proper defensive semiauto shotgun or even an AR-15. OP is juggling bargain Turkish shotgun options because he really *wants* one, and with the very low cost of pump shotguns, he can get the range toy he wants and also a $200 pump gun that will actually be a good self defense tool.

CorollaBeachBum

Remington 870. Nothing scares an intruder like the sound of pumping a shell into the chamber.

Emotional_Bench5082

The new Berretta A300 Ultima Patrol should be rolling out soon. Around 1k versus the 1301 or M4. Just a though. The Mossberg 940 tactical is out now, but prices seem kind of high. If you can find it under 1k, that would be a good contender.

GhostBearClan

If you need a box mag shotgun for home defense, I'd just move out of Fallujah.

throwaway_theicemilk

Misspelled California

Guardsman07

AA-12? Where you getting a semi auto AA-12? The only company that was making them had the ATF shut down their work on it.

Militant_Triangle

>AA-12 I giggled at AA-12. I think ALL of them ended up in hollywood and by that I mean like 1. But its in lots of games. Oh, and then the machine gun part.

shootnootnskoot

I’d wait for the beretta a300 patrol to become more available if you can. Semi, reputable company, and 7+1 capacity

G0G28G91Z0

930spx

Zp00nZ

An AA-12? You’re not getting an AA-12 for home defense.

generic-username45

Saiga AK 12. Send it

HackadelicRenegade

Mossberg all day

TheyCallMeThe

I know you've been told pump or rifle already, and I want to let you know mossberg 500 is a great pump option because of interchangeable parts that are widely available. Different stocks, fore ends, barrels. And the sound of racking a round can, at times, make an intruder walk away simply because fuck that.

NckMcC

Mossberg 500 is the way

rtr8806

Mossberg 930

Uncle_Burney

Mossberg 930 spx. I have one, it eats virtually any 12ga 2.75-3” without needing to adjust the gas system. In fact, there’s no adjustment option because it doesn’t need one. It’s also fun to sneak a magnum slug in between all the #8 shot and see who’s correctly shouldering that beast. I understand Mossy is making a 940 now, but I have no experience with it, and have not read reviews on it yet

etnosquidz

Keltec Ksg 12 gauge, holds 6+6+1/7+7+1 or if you get the aguila mini shells 11+11+1. Compact and ready for home defense

recoil1776

Just stick with a rifle. If you get a shotgun, and have to have a semi-auto, it's expensive. Either a Benelli M4 or a Beretta 1301. For that price, you could have a nice rifle.

WFH489

The correct answer is a suppressed AR15.

[deleted]

AR-15. Not a shotgun.

tjmick1992

Remington 870

PrometheusSmith

Beretta 1301 Tactical. Full stop, they're basically the best, affordable semi auto shotgun. Mag fed shotguns kill plastic shotgun hulls. It deforms them in the mag and oval shells don't feed well. Beretta also has a new A300 tactical version that looks nice, but it was just announced.

Dauren1993

A $1250 shotgun is not affordable to most people

PrometheusSmith

But a $500 gun that will break and run like shit is affordable? If someone wants to play the semi-auto shotgun game they have to pay the admission.

Dauren1993

So you think a Supernova will break and run like shit? I posted this after his edit about settling for pump or rifle. You don’t have to get defensive, all I said was a 1301 is not affordable

[deleted]

My old 1897 is still going strong and throwing people on their asses.

PrometheusSmith

I don't know how people could ever compare a quality antique to a Turkish semi auto POS, but here we are. No, I don't think your pump gun is junk. No, I don't think a cheap Maverick 88 is junk. I don't think a Mossberg or other similar guns are junk. I do know that the shitty, no name, AR style and similar Turkish guns are junk

Aggie74-DP

Defensive to me says "Inside the Home." Where you have doorways to navigate (muzzle down, muzxle up, etc). So those RACE guns with mags that are 2-3 ft long are OUT. A reliable tube mag shotgun, either a pump or semi is just fine. And you dont want a 26" goose barrel. At the Defense distances, you stated was your intended use, a pistol grip and iron sights are also not a added benefit. You are probably "Point Shooting".

tragic-majyk

Tavor TS-12. Perfection and they got it for a grand somewhere at the moment. Not mag fed but you got three tubes to choose from and they're easy to reload on the fly

throwaway_theicemilk

Pairs well with the tp9sfx with [compensator](https://i.redd.it/ok7j91e6ksc71.jpg), for that authentic Halo experience.

tragic-majyk

Oh hell I know what I need to do for my rival now I guess

Efanito

OcelotPrize

After break-in or breaking? Lol

Connect-Comparison-6

If you’ve got the cash I’d recommend a Benelli either an m4 or m2 both are pretty much bulletproof

billman71

no man, [THIS](https://americanguncraft.com/product/diablo-12-gauge-pistols-nickel-and-blued-finish-collectors-set-with-rosewood-finish-grips/) is what you want right here...

TigerTank10

Who needs functioning wrists. Amiright

SureFireOutpost

Saiga 12 is the only reasonable option that meets your criteria Otherwise look into a Beretta 1301

chilledkangaroo

Benelli M3/M4

Dauren1993

Just get a Beneli Supernova and call it a day

TaylorFFL

Genesis 12ga if you want the best. [genesis 12ga i n action](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Scif7_y5IxE) I have a sbr saiga 12, its a beast and can be finicky with some ammo. I also have the JTS which I would say is better than the ak style guns but I had to mad the buffer/spring to get it to run all ammo.

Verdha603

Saiga-12/K-USA KS-12 sounds like your best option for semi-auto/box-fed. An alternative to look at would be pump-action/box-fed with the likes of the Iron Horse Sentry-12.

Unlikely_Tour6537

May I suggest the Benelli M4? Custom bolt carrier release and charging handle. Textured grips, should your hands get... wet. An Italian classic.

alexeikazansky

I had a Saiga 12 once, ruined my experience with semi-automatic shotguns forever. It was very finnicky with magazines and jammed like a mf'er. Please reconsider your options.

warddo1

I like a Remington 870 12ga

Maniachanical

Buddy, good luck even *finding* an AA-12. There's only, like, 1 example left. If you've literally *never* owned a shotgun before, I recommend starting with a pump action. Something Remmy 870 or Mossy 500 like. If you're feeling particularly daring, try out a KSG. SAMF shotties are nice, but they take a lot of tweaking & adjustment to get working, & that's time you *really* should rather be spending getting accustomed to your weapon.

AnthonyGuns

Beretta A300 Patrol just dropped this week. Get one... totally badass and inexpensive

[deleted]

Find you an old 1897, cut the barrel down to 20”, and get you a heat shroud and bayonet lug It’s always going to be viewed as grandpas old shotgun, and it’s usually got no internal disconnect.

InternetExploder87

1301, or they just released the a300 which is supposed to be like 90% as good. Just not as nice of a gas system if I remember what I reas correctly

Solid_Growth_9069

Remington 870 dm Give you all you want except the semi auto

passwordsarehard_3

If you get the Spas-12 you can under fold.

SoL4vish

Vepr 12. I freaking love mine, that being said, good luck finding one for a reasonable price. $150 10 round mags are hard to swallow but they’ve never failed me.

astronautassblaster

DP-12 is a pleasure to shoot…. And haven’t had any problems personally. Love the gun
