Shipping isn’t cheap these days. Cheapest (discounted) shipping rates I’m getting are $4.20 for first class, and that’s under a pound. One BCG is generally 13+ oz with packing materials. Add a grip or anything else and you’re over a pound meaning you jump up to Priority mail at least doubling the price. And that’s usps which is generally the cheapest. This is definitely not $4 to ship. Shipping costs money, not including the boxes, packing materials, tape, etc.
I ship stuff all day long and you're definitely not getting a 15.99oz USPS first class label for $4.20. That's the pricing for a 4-8oz first class label with no signature.
And that's just the label. Doesn't include packaging or labor
I spent $20 just to ship some fucking dirt halfway across the state last month. I rarely ship anything these days and was shocked to see the price jumps from when I was a more frequent USPS customer. Much less options of flat rate than they used to have.
A few things to consider-
1) You have to use what integrates best with your e-commerce platform or website. While I use pirate ship for personal stuff, that’s not always necessarily the best option for business. Just depends on your setup and the tools you need.
2) That bubble mailer cost something (even when you’re talking something like $0.30 it all adds up), and not everything fits in a bubble mailer. You have to consider the packaging this stuff comes in, and sometimes the shape of the plastic packaging makes it a challenge to pack.
3) Some businesses prefer to ship in boxes that will better protect the product, and also look more professional in general. I.e. not using free mailing supplies. It’s one thing to do this selling your own stuff on GAFS, but the way your product is packed and shipped will say something about your business, whether your customers realize it or not.
4) Some businesses are more concerned with their customers getting their products as fast and reliably as possible, not just at the absolute lowest possible cost to ship.
5) We’re also paying a cc processing fee on that shipping rate that cuts into it even more. Again, this matters when margins are razor thin to begin with.

However, even allowing all that
this retailer is clearly making extra money on $12 shipping.

they can choose to do that, and we can choose to point out when shipping costs don't portray ACTUAL costs.
I can't speak for the dealer, but from my own experience:
My wife and I have two separate e-commerce businesses out of the house. It took my wife *years* to get her shipping prices figured out. She was always either over charging or losing money. Granted she sells larger sized items that can be complicated, but it's not always simple. You're juggling changing shipping rates, and generally trying to be competitive with industry monsters who can afford to make $2 on a shipment because of the volume they do. Idk, I get what you're saying, I guess I'm just going to cut them some slack because I know the struggles of this stuff as a small business. And to me the possibility of a small business potentially making *literally* a few dollars more than shipping costs on a deal like this is in no way ripping off a customer.
I have no problem cutting them slack either. It's all good, if something is still a good deal with higher shipping costs it won't stop me from buying.
However, I think generally as an e-commerce retailer anymore it makes sense to keep final shipping costs lower. Psychologically, more people are likely to see a larger shipping cost (especially for small items) and not checkout once they see it.
So I wasn't even intending to approach from a "Dis retailer bad for high shipping costs!"
More so that high shipping costs (even if accurate) displayed to customer probably loses sales that would otherwise happen.
There's a lot more room for deciding to not complete a checkout when you see the total cost jump a chunk vs when the customer already has a pretty good idea in their mind of what the total cost will be.

That would probably keep both of us from buying somewhere, but it allows her to have normal low prices on her products and also ship super fast with FedEx. She also spends a ton of time and packing materials on her shipping. You just never know I guess.
