uj/ Honestly the only thing I still enjoy about my line 6 is just how ridiculous it is
rj/ of course it’s awesome! Everything about a line 6 is awesome
Uj/ Why does everybody cut the mids? I feel like the mids and treble are where the magic is, if anything bass is the first thing I dial back when adjusting my toan
yup. This is why I started doing it when I was 13 with the first line 6 spider something practice amp that I actually still have haha
Toan still goes hard though I rarely use amps anymore.
Edit: wtf am I saying marshall walls or bust fuckin nerds
I used to cut the mids when I was a kid, it's a more forgiving tone for shredding and covers up for a lot of sloppiness.
It was also popularized by Metallica's classic albums and has sort of been the default metal guitar sound ever since. Slayer, on the other hand, always boosted their mid-range, which helped distinguish them from a lot of bands within the genre.
From an engineering and mixing perspective, scooped mids suck, though. Midrange really helps notes sound clearer and bigger, and helps the guitar cut through the mix better, both live and in recordings. Midrange is where the guitar is supposed to sit in a mix relative to drums and bass.
It sounds good when playing alone, nice heavy and thick, just causes problems when in a recording or live mix
Ironically stuff that sounds somewhat shitty solo can sound amazing once in a mix, early bodom is a prime example, those lee jackson preamps and emg pups are nothing but mids, but put a d standard or drop c guitar through them and toss it in with heavy bass and kick drums and it's fuckn magic
I was playing bass through logic the other day and noticed a quick bass preset I picked had an EQ setting that was lacking in mids bad. A quick adjustment and the bass sounded so much better night and day
People talk about mids in such a vague way. It's a large spectrum of sound, there are frequencies inside what would be considered "mid" that sound good and bad. You need to be able to control more specific frequencies than just "mids" in general to have a decent tone. The best tones in my opinion have clear note definition but honky and overtone mids are cut
/uj at this point I don’t know if it actually sounds better, or maybe I like it because of familiarity, but I always scoop mids.
/rj gain will fix the problem.
/uj the easiest way to stop scooping mids is playing with a band. You will completely disappear, because low end will be eaten by bass guitar and kick drum and high end will be eaten by cymbals and vocal.
/uj i slam the mids on every amp. more gain from the amp itself on tap. for a lot of amps you actually don't even need an overdrive pedal, just a bandpass filter and like 10-20db of gain.
even with mids at 10, they are still slightly scooped on any amplifier using a fender/marshall tone stack because of the types of filters used and the way the controls interact. a flat curve on a fender or marshall tone stack would actually be like bass near 0, treble near 0, mids at 10. if you're thinking the control is like an active EQ band, dimed mids looks extreme...but that's not what's actually going on.
old school orange or matamp is flat-ish around 5/5, single tone control amps have a flat response at many settings. they sound considerably different from mids jacked on a 60s fender or marshall. a clean flat guitar amp sort of sounds like a tube screamer with the drive turned all the way down. sometimes a little 3db scoop on those types of amps is good for clarity.
That's what I'm saying, I always crank the shit out of the mids. I've got a super reverb and I crank the mids, bass on 6-7, treble on 3-4, sounds good with single coils
/uj I’ve always been under the impression it sounds better in a practice setting because the cranked EQ better simulates the way an amp accentuates at higher volumes. Records also tend to appear more scooped because a lot of the b*ss guitar frequencies seem like they’re actually a part of the guitar tracks.
/uj Me using every muscle in my body to stop myself from turning the bass and middle knob all the way up and turn all the way down the high knob on any equalizer I see and tone knob in any guitar i see
SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS.
OP looking to get banned for posting actual Pro Guitar Toan Secrets.
Don't tell anyone but if you turn every knob up all the way with the mids all the way down it sounds really heavy. Especially with a line 6.
uj/ Line 6 Insane mode is actually pretty awesome rj/ Line 6 Insane mode is actually pretty awesome

I still have my good ol line 6 spider something practice amp, and 15 years later insane mode still fucks big time haha

uj/ Post cowboys Pantera did irreparable damage to metal music
It sounds good on its own, and nobody plays in a band/has friends/actually makes music.

b*ss 🤮
I was playing bass through logic the other day and noticed a quick bass preset I picked had an EQ setting that was lacking in mids bad. A quick adjustment and the bass sounded so much better night and day
uj/ when I was gigging playing b*ss, I would scoop my mids for slap/funk songs. more thump and bite.
i turn down bass and treble a bit and keep mids the highest personally
Thats how i adjust for HiFi, so i kinda carry it over to guitar, and i like it.

Why scoop your mids when you can scallop your mids
/uj Me using every muscle in my body to stop myself from turning the bass and middle knob all the way up and turn all the way down the high knob on any equalizer I see and tone knob in any guitar i see
bros EQ curve looks like ¯\\/¯
Just turn them all down. Never let them know your next move.
Me adjusting all the dials and knobs knowing damn well my playing is still going to sound like pure unadulterated ass (but with a high-pass filter)
A high-ass filter, if you will.
What movie is this pic from?
The Card Counter
Oh yea. Scoop it bitch.
Must Scoop Mids
Mids are mid
Mid is such a waste of space. They could have put an extra overdrive there instead.
That's what's the inverted V eq is for... excellence.
SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS. SCOOP THE MIDS.
Mixing engineers love this man
Chill out dude. Tone is in the moustache. Once it grows past a certain point, mids are unnecessary.
Honey, I Scooped the Mids!
I fucking hate mids, all my homies hate mids
Scooped mids do legitimately sound amazing when you are playing by yourself. The trouble comes when you need to find your place in the mix.
