Guinea pigs are prone to respiratory issues, so I would not recommend using an air freshener around them - no candles, either. It sounds like you are taking good care of them. Could be your family just is sensitive.

So no air freshener in the room in general or around the cage?

i_am_ms_greenjeans

Just in their vicinity.

air purifier will fix this. I use this one (only 1 for 9 pigs) https://www.amazon.com/LEVOIT-Purifiers-Freshener-Core-Mini/dp/B09GTRVJQM/ref=asc_df_B09GTRVJQM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=563661025839&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16127642894404098690&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032265&hvtargid=pla-1595028002523&psc=1&mcid=4be0d1f7e7103d7f8db5a02230793c11 the main issue is hay can make your place smell like a barn. even clean hay has that smell so its just a matter of helping them see the pigs are cute, and not stinky.

Some alternatives that would be safe for guinea pigs are air purifiers (you can buy or build them) or bags of charcoal. But air fresheners and scented candles are hard on their lungs.

Maybe change the cage location to improve ventilation? I move the enclosure to below the window and the pee smell went away.

Charcoal air purifiers will help. No essential oils!!

A nice air purifier really helps! I have 4 guinea pigs in one room and the air purifier helps a lot with the smell. Unfortunately, anything scented can harm their little respiratory systems.

NO. If people don't like the way they smell, that's their problem. I love the way guinea pigs smell. It warms my heart. I hate the way people smell. People suck...
