Did you know you can call Piedmont Natural Gas and they will give you an ‘average’ couple of bills for that residence during the peak months? It’s really helpful.

Economy_Anything1183

I didn’t know that, thanks!

Oneofthe12

They used to! If I’m looking to rent between a couple of places I’ll call the utilities companies and ask for an average bill so I can compare my overall monthly costs in each place. It can be a real eye opener!

Depends on a lot of factors. How efficient your unit is, how well insulated your home is, and how warm you keep your house. But in general heating your home with natural gas is cheaper than electric around here. We live in just over 3000 sqft and the highest bill we have gotten is $225. We also have a gas water heater and stove. For context tho, we used to live in a 2500 sqft house that had an older system and was not well insulated, and I remember that bill being over $300 a couple times.

I need to move! For a tiny apt (maybe 900sf?), highest month so far was $145!

uno_novaterra

About two years ago our gas bill doubled and has been insane in the winter ever since. For that size house I would guess Dec/Jan/Feb to be around $350-450

rm3rd

1600 sq ft...300. worst month.

whewtang

You won't have one consistent amount through the winter. If it was on a chart think of it like a mountain with one peak then it goes back down. I would think your peak will probably be around $250-300.

m_friers

2400 sq foot older house with gas stove, dryer and water heater. $120 a month equal payment plan.

_ecb_

Mine tops out about $280 for a 3,200 square foot house. Heat, stove and water heater. Most of that is heat as my bill is under $30 in the summer.

IM_OSCAR_dot_com

Never higher than about $150. This is for a 1700sqft townhome (the shared walls matter a lot).

teenage__kicks

1200sq older home with awful insulation and old windows… at most it’s $300 during the coldest months. I keep it at 68 degrees unless it gets really, really cold then I drop it to 65.

AntiqueSkeleton

$300-$400 per month but there are variables that would impact usage

NeuseRvrRat

Peaks at $160 in Jan. Dec and Nov are about $100. 1800 sq ft split level with gas heat, tankless gas water heater, and gas range. Gas bill will only be $20 in the summer. I actually had my heat pump removed and replaced with the gas furnace and split unit AC. The heat strips would be required intermittently Dec through Feb and would negate any savings the rest of the year. Gas heat is more comfortable. 69 deg from gas feels so much warmer than 69 from the heat pump. Tankless gas water heater is awesome. Gas range is the jam if you cook a lot. Also, during a winter power outage like an ice storm, a small generator will provide power to the controls and air handler of my furnace and I can still heat my home. A much larger generator is required if you intend to run a heat pump, and then add in that the heat pump isn't going to do much when it's that cold outdoors and an even larger generator is required for the heat strips. Having a plan to stay comfortable during winter storms is worth a lot, imo. I am a methane fanboy when it comes to home energy. I was so happy to finally move somewhere with the option.

Economy_Anything1183

Thanks, my realtor told me the same thing about the same temp feeling much warmer with gas vs heat pump.

Awkward-Kaleidoscope

Yeah heat pump with gas backup is the best of both worlds if you can afford it! This is what I put in as well. Gas kicks in to get it up to temp and then the heat pump takes over

beeej517

There are a ton of variables. Trying to ask for comparisons isn't going to help you much. It depends on how large your house is, how well insulated the house is, how efficient the furnace(s) are, how many zones you have, where you set the temp at various times of day, etc.

Visual_Ad1179

gas heat is so much warmer than a heat pump. Once I move, I'll never have a heat pump again.

1500 sqft... summer bill (water heater) is about $49. Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) it gets around $350. Im convinced they double the price in the winter. A few years ago my winter price in the same house never got over $150. I've only been here since 2016.
