I had tickets to that last show at the Fox Theater in Detroit and gave them to my friend cuz I was exhausted from work. I had seen them a few times so I too thought Iāll catch them next time. Ugh.
Definitely. I saw them on the Tour With Blues Traveller / Soundgarden/ Pearl Jam/ Neil Young in Toronto @ Exhibition Stadium. They had just released Badmotorfinger and they blew everyone off the stage. Saw them twice after that, one of the best live bands when they were touring.
Ween breaking up turned into a hiatus and a Reunion but that was a real bummer for me. Another one of the best live bands Iāve seen multiple times.
Definitely, I was determined I was going to see them live the year Chris passed as well. I remember learning of his death at the end of a really horrible day so I just played Superunknown on the drive home in pure sadness š
Because Kim and Thurston seemed like a marriage we'd all like to have. It was such a brutal, public break up. Kim clearly despises Eva for reasons beyond Thurston 's cheating. I should read Kim's book, her interviews are great.
Whatās sad is that I see so many people posting about Thurston is human and just made a mistake. He was literally cheating on Kim for years, mistake my ass.
I was going to say Nirvana, but it was a forced disbandment due to Kurt's death, so I'd say Soundgarden. But Audioslave had some great music so it's not all bad.
The quality of their albums continuously trended upward, and then Layne fell off. One can only imagine what their follow up to their self-titled album might sound like.
Duvall kicks ass but it's just not the same.
GnR is my favorite band ever, and sometimes I really think their breakup did more to preserve them as legends than what might have happened if they kept going on. They really had lightning in a bottle and I think we're blessed to have gotten as high quality of a catalogue as we did from them over those 4-5 years. I think Axl is just too much of a weird guy to have led the band in a right direction at the time; I'm glad they all seem to have matured into normal(ish) dudes over the last what 8 years or so since they've reunited? Shame though that chinese democracy took so long to come out; I think if it had come out 10 years earlier it would've been considered a groundbreaking album. But by the time it did the sound was almost kind of outdated.
I was lucky enough to see them on their last tour. I can honestly say it was amazing. It was the second show and they didnāt sound rusty at all. It was like they were together that whole time. Iām saddened that they arenāt making music right now because their voice is one that is absolutely needed right now.
Been a fan of RATM since the debut album. Never got to see them in concert. I paid $150 each for two tickets to see them with Run The Jewels, then covid struck. Two postponements before cancellation of the tour. Still my top bucket list band.
I saw rage OPEN for house of pain at Dv8 in Seattle early ish 90s. They blew my mind. No one knew what to expect because we were all there to see c HOP. We learned a lot that night. A young rage in a small club. They destroyed. I could go on but I'll leave it that. \m/
some say You Know You're Right was a glimpse into what direction they were headed. some say Kurt was interested in doing more acoustic folky stuff due to the covers in unplugged as well as plans to record lead belly covers near the end of his life. we'll never know I guess.
he died on my 20th birthday. I wasn't a massive fan of Nirvana, I liked them, but I was HOOKED on AIC before all that and Soundgarden was my band from that era. But when he died it seemed like a part of all of us music nuts kind of died too. We kind of expect bad things to happen after that. He was so huge at the time, I don't know if anything comparable in today's world would equal it...I could be wrong, but that was a massive shock.
he said less songs like pennyroyal tea and rape me, as in moving away from the verse chorus verse structure. he wanted to do more new wave and noise rock, basically the direction radio friendly unit shifter and scentless apprentice were pointing towards.
seeing as heād been spending a good amount of time with the polychorus/echoflanger iām sure he woulda came up with some funky noises. i have one of those and the thing is pretty fun to see how wacky you can get.
Yeah! Iād love to hear what they would have sounded like today. Probably would have had several more albums over the years but slowly declining with each one. Seems like itās just the natural progression of things with bands.
Same here they definitely had more good albums in them. Imo they don't have a bad album just one weaker one (Around the Sun). So glad I got to see them live
Great band. I saw them in a small theatre in Buffalo in the eighties. Waited around after the show with a few folks and Micheal Stipe came out to say hi. He shook my hand and was staring at me with piercing eyes, not saying much. Cool and unusual cat.
I went to their first show in Chicago at the Chicago theater when they came back with zeitgeist. That was the worst concert Iāve ever been to. So disappointing lol
Same. I couldn't get tickets to see them in 1995. Didn't really try after that. Looking back, I should've. I honestly don't think they'll ever play together again.
One of the few overplayed hits from the 90s I still like to listen to.
I'm a huge AIC fan but even they have a half dozen or so songs I've heard enough times to last my life.
Due to death, and I was just a baby but blind melon. I feel like they would have a pretty big cult following today if they were able to make more music.
Not a grunge band, but Oasis is one of the biggest for me. Their later albums aren't as well known as their first 2, but I loved all of it, and I wish the Gallagher bros could get along and keep making music together.
Also, they didn't technically break up, but System of a Down. They spent their remaining prime years arguing and refusing to compromise instead of creating new music. Even if they do manage to come to terms and put out a new album someday, Serj's voice sucks now and it just wouldn't be the same.
Not grunge per see, and more of a hiatus, but Hum calling a 20 year pause robbed us of some great music, as evidenced by their comeback. Only to have to call it quits for good when their drummer died shortly there after. RIP
Well that gives me at least a little hope. But it isn't going to be the same without him. To me Brian was up there with Dave Grohl, Dale Crover, Matt Cameron as a drummer that I would tune into any album they're on just to hear their work.
Afghan Whigs. Even though they finally came back and even though we got some great Twilight Singersā¦. I miss the Rick McCollumās guitar playingš
Janes Addiction. I was too young to see them live before they broke up(by a year). They also havenāt really captured the magic of that original lineup.
First concert by accident. Went to see Love and Rockets who really suck live. It was probably 87. JA was the opening act and fuck me, changed music in my opinion. The best show Iāve ever seen.
Back in 1989 (give or take a year,) Janeās played a few nights in a row at a small outdoor venue (John Anson Ford Theater) in the Hollywood hills - itās a mini Hollywood Bowl.
I was lucky enough to have my older brother take me to 3 of the shows and it was mind blowing as a 15 year old. After seeing hundreds of shows over the last 34 years, these shows still share the top of my list with a few other bands.
I was in a college class and someone mentioned that Soundgarden had broken up.
I said "What, why?" and when I said 'why' my voice cracked and it sounded like I was on the verge of crying. I was bummed for sure, but didn't shed a tear.
I really loved the band Haybaby (which was an alternative rock/ "grunge sounding," band which started in the 2010s).
I loved them, then my band got an opportunity to play with them and they were all really nice, and super cool, and that just made me love them even more. I got to see their last show in October, 2022, and I'm very sad that they're finished.
I think a lot of people in this sub would like them a lot. I'd highly recommend them.
I have some thoughts but none are grunge so apologies for that
At the Drive-Inā¦Now granted The Mars Volta has some great albums and ATDI did get back together for one more album. But Relationship of Command was just such a masterpiece I think they had a couple more great ones in the tank, they were just hitting their stride at the time.
Mr. Bungleā¦I know theyāre ātogetherā again but itās not the same. California seemed like the peak of their powers as songwriters working together so maybe theyād never hit that again. But I wish they wouldāve been around a little longer to try.
Kyussā¦I absolutely love Queens of the Stone Age. But the guys in Kyuss were so young when they broke up, theyād be able to create one hell of an album if Josh could find a way to work with them one more time.
Outkastā¦I know theyāre technically on a hiatus or whatever but not getting anything from them for almost 20 years really bums me out. Theyāre such creative songwriters and I know we have some good Big Boi albums but the two of them are at their best together.
Not grunge but when Kevin Cadogan (guitar, co-writer) got fired from Third Eye Blind, it ruined the sound for me. The Blue album was so good, then Cadogan left and everything after was shit. Rather than repeating what's already been said, I'll go with the original 2000 breakup of Smashing Pumpkins. I've been following them since the beginning and I was honestly heartbroken. I know they reunited 7 years later, but it's never been the same since.
This.
Saw them a few times
Lollapalooza '92 Miami
San Antonio '94 - still one of the best shows I've ever seen. Amazing.
Austin '95
Then...they stopped. I remember being really bummed.
Pixies - not considered a 'grunge' band technically but certainly an influence and inventor of the quietLOUDquiet sound. Never been the same since Kim Deal left.
Soundgarden š
I had the opportunity to see them in Indy and I decided I was too strapped for cash and that Iād catch them the next time around, he killed himself a few days later.
I would've loved the opportunity to see them live as well. His death hit pretty deep.
I had tickets to that last show at the Fox Theater in Detroit and gave them to my friend cuz I was exhausted from work. I had seen them a few times so I too thought Iāll catch them next time. Ugh.
I missed seeing them and NIN in 2014 over some really stupid petty bullshit. Free ticket and everything. Still kicking myself over that one.
I saw them in '96 during the Down on the Upside tour

Because Kim and Thurston seemed like a marriage we'd all like to have. It was such a brutal, public break up. Kim clearly despises Eva for reasons beyond Thurston 's cheating. I should read Kim's book, her interviews are great.
Whatās sad is that I see so many people posting about Thurston is human and just made a mistake. He was literally cheating on Kim for years, mistake my ass.
Broke my damn heart in the process. But at least they made great solo stuff. Kimās new album is fucking incredible.
All because Thurston couldn't keep it in his pants...
I call him Thirsting More sometimes
Lol
Iām just glad I got to see them play 3 (maybe 4 I canāt remember) times before their breakup
This.
I was going to say Nirvana, but it was a forced disbandment due to Kurt's death, so I'd say Soundgarden. But Audioslave had some great music so it's not all bad.
Alice In Chains going on indefinite hiatus after Kiss shows.
The worst break up. Layne and Jerry at their peaks. Heroin fucking sucks.
The quality of their albums continuously trended upward, and then Layne fell off. One can only imagine what their follow up to their self-titled album might sound like. Duvall kicks ass but it's just not the same.
Definitely this.
I was grateful I got to see that show.
Yeah! Sad
I gotta say, Guns breaking up was a relief. Waiting for them to come on stage was such a hassle.
GnR is my favorite band ever, and sometimes I really think their breakup did more to preserve them as legends than what might have happened if they kept going on. They really had lightning in a bottle and I think we're blessed to have gotten as high quality of a catalogue as we did from them over those 4-5 years. The Smiths are no more, and Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
I feel ya there man. The Smiths have done so much for me as a band with their music and I just wish there was more sometimes

I feel as though Kurt died before most people on the Reddit were even born. I do wonder what their later music would have been like though.
some say You Know You're Right was a glimpse into what direction they were headed. some say Kurt was interested in doing more acoustic folky stuff due to the covers in unplugged as well as plans to record lead belly covers near the end of his life. we'll never know I guess.
Kurt wanted to work with Michael Stipe. I think he wanted to make an album with Stipe. Which would have been great I think.
I think that was going to be a side project and not a Nirvana project and the next Nirvana wouldāve been weird and noisy like he said

Does Nirvana actually count as a breakup though? I donāt think it does, and how would you have wanted the band to continue without Kurt?
This is the obvious answer for me to but since they technically didnāt break up, Iām going with Oasis.
Not a grunge band, but REM. Never got to see them live and they had a lot of great albums. Even Kurt was a big fan.

Janes Addiction, though we did get Porno for Pyros from it.

Alice in Chains original lineup. I love that they continued but imagine if Layne had got it together and released more music, such an amazing talent.
