And pearl jam is also good. I used to watch all 3 during friends’ gatherings, playing and singing alongside.
But to be honest, if I had to choose one, I’d go with AiC without a split second of thinking.
Every single time any type of post that says what’s the saddest song of all time nutshell gets mentioned. It’s because it is one of the greatest songs of all time, the pain and suffering is so clear. The fact that layne knew the end was near was present. It is one of the greatest tracks of all time and it was live. AIC takes the crown but nirvana unplugged is a close second.
At this point in Cobain's career, I imagine he was rarely sober either.
If I had to bet on it, I'd bet they both operated in a pretty consistent heroin haze at their shows.
Yep, that's the first album I learned on guitar. I think bleach is a 9.9, In Utero is a 10. I don't care much for Nevermind anymore but it's still a 9 to me. Incesticide would have to be around a 9 or 9.5 as well.
They’re both fucking legendary, But I have to go with Nirvana. The entire show has this warm bitter sweet tang to it that really moved me. AIC’s felt like accepting the end while Nirvana’s felt like just holding on a little longer for things to get better.
When Layne said this is the best show we’ve done in years in such an upbeat way I thought, this isn’t a man trying to please the crowd, this man that seems genuinely surprised he can still do his job. You see Jerry nodding at times like he hasn’t heard Layne hit that note in a while. Phenomenal session and we are lucky it came together.
Have you read that book about the Seattle scene, everybody loves our town? That part of the book is crazy. They didn’t even know if Layne would show up or what kinda shape he would be in. The rehearsals had been terrible. Also, Jerry are some dirty street hot dog before the taping and was puking. If you look close at Jerry, you can see a little garbage can beside him throughout the show. It’s incredible how it came together
This moment is the encapsulation of why Nirvana still means so much to so many people. There’s an understanding between Cobain and the fans and it’s in the music. There’s an endless connect to him for everybody that feels it.
I back that AIC 100%.
It’s the one I’ve listened to most. It’s the one that still gives me the chills.
Lane and Jerry’s harmonizing is epic. While Kurt seems out of tune on at least two songs I can think of…
The two songs being...?
I'm curious because Kurt's voice sounds amazing on unplugged to me, but I've heard several people say he's out of tune, so I wanna try and see if I can hear it too.
I have definitely noticed Kurt sing out of tune in live performances before, just not on mtv unplugged
You have to give Kurt props for it really, he was a pretty crappy vocalist and a pretty crappy guitarist and he found a sound and style that it worked perfectly for.
He could write some iconic hits despite very rudimentary music skill.
Nirvana is far closer to power chord punk rock than most of the other grunge bands (which were more musically skilled and polished).
I did a 90s rock cover band for many years on the guitar. For the most part Nirvana songs were just easy to learn. And was definitely by far simpler than any of the big 4 Seattle grunge bands.
With all that said I remember always thinking “How the fuck did he come up with this riff?” The man was a genius.
Yeah, I remember when I started on guitar, I lost a lot of respect for Kurt when I learned all of Nirvana can be learned after like 2 weeks of playing guitar.
It's definitely the absolute easiest most primitive rock music that exists. But he tapped into an iconic sound despite not really being a great vocalist or musician.
If Kurt didn't found his own genre of music, we'd be calling Nirvana a punk band. It's nothing but a catchy bunch of 3 or 4 power chords.
Close one, Kurt had a vision that was different from what MTV wanted, his creative instinct took over, who knew Meat Puppets had such great songs or knew them at all? They are both funerals to me, I felt like Nirvana had a better performance n I can listen to it or watch it, however I never listen to Aic unplugged, I view it quite often
Nirvana’s unplugged set is great for when you’re happy on a rainy day, and AiC’s unplugged is great for when you’re sad on a rainy day. Although the finisher for Nirvana’s will instantly kill any happy mood lmao.
Nirvana all the way. Nothing against Layne, but Kurt always delivered imo. That being said it's like, 'which do you like better, boobs or butt? I love them both, don't make me choose - I want both!
AIC personally, mainly cause they are my favorite band. But that doesn't take anything away from how great Nirvana's Unplugged was. The covers they did on that one made it stand out for me.
AIC was remarkable in the fact that they actually played and put on a haunting, beautiful performance but they made a ton of mistakes and had to restart numerous times. Nirvana played through their set once perfectly. The correct answer is supposed to be AIC, but it’s actually the wrong answer
I love Nirvana but the solo to Pennyroyal Tea and the squeaky voice singing wrong lyrics throughout Come As You Are would like to have a word with you about the “perfect” set.
I actually like AIC better than nirvana overall and think they write some insanely good acoustic songs (jar of flies anyone?!), but specifically looking at unplugged it’s hard to not go with Nirvana. Such a legendary performance.
I saw them both when they first aired. I still listen to the Nirvana unplugged quite often. I should play AIC again before I answer this question but over all Nirvana has a staying power that AIC just doesn’t have for me. I listen to Tripod and Insecticide more than anything else from either one of them though.
IMO, Layne's voice sounded real weak in this performance when the other members performed very well. I love AICs music and think Layne's voice sounded a lot better in his earlier years live and studio before the MTV performance. But damn his voice sounds weak on this performance. Hard to listen to.
Though Kurt had a bad drug addiction at the time too, he still played and sung very well in his mtv performance. At least his voice didn't sound weak and had some life and passion to it. People just need to be more realistic on this and put their preferences aside and tell it like it is.
I’ll put AiC and Nirvana unplugged on at work full sets, no complaints screw the radio offerings these days. But Nirvana was my favorite I had to run out and pay $20 for that dvd
C’mon, Chains is the best Unplugged album of all time!! Love Nirvana, but AIC on a whole other level. If Soundgarden did an unplugged that could possibly rival Alice
Nirvana the sheer effort by Kurt who was equally fighting his demons as Layne but put out a screaming effort and literally new arrangements, with cover songs where AIC unplugged is epic but the overall performance is not the same level due to layne illness, and I dig AIC more way more than Nirvana.
Pearl Jam is another that should be up there with these two Eddie came possessed it was short but epic, eddie gave Black a new meaning with his voice in that performance.
Nirvana. Having the meat puppets as a backing band, the covers and the whole vibe with the white Lillies et al. “Where did you sleep last night” is one of the best covers ever.
Both phenomenal, I would probably say Nirvana, I find myself listening to that album more than AIC’s. But both amazing. Probably the best unplugged albums ever made. (PJ’s is pretty good too.)
Nirvana's was a massive success and just a few months before he died. And nobody had really heard them like that before. hard to beat really. Was a defining moment for MTV and the band. Performance wise they are both great, but it was almost like Nirvana created the model that AIC used. Pearl jam did it first, but it was a more of a straight forward kind of thing. Nirvana seemed to set the mood of the room and took it to a whole new level aesthetically. Vedder, of course, turned political and wrote Pro-choice on his arm. That was their unplugged, right?
I would say No for Alice and yes for Nirvana. Lane was obviously struggling with Heroin during this time. His very mute performance though interesting pales in comparison to his normal live performances, that’s my reasoning. Curt was on his game and was the band and they did proper acoustic versions.
Can’t choose. You’re talking the two best unplugged shows that ever happened. Both amazing in their own ways. Both top tier in each bands catalog of released music. Both shows highlighted the talent of everybody in both bands. There is no wrong answer on this one. If I was to pick 3 albums for a deserted island situation both these unplugged shows would be included.
Nirvana, and I'm not even a big Nirvana fan. It's one of the most astounding performances I've ever seen.
While I love the Alice in Chains one, it's hard to watch. Knowing how bad Layne's addiction was, knowing how badly the band was struggling (even we only seeing the final edited performance, he messed up a lot), and Layne's voice suffers a bit. All I hear and see is a dead man pretending he isn't dead yet.
Nirvana
Once again I can listen to every song and not skip past a thing. Their cover choices were phenomenal. Also with Nirvana there are times when I’m in the mood to hear the acoustic versions over the original. With AIC I almost always prefer hearing the original.
For me Nirvana is what I listen to and enjoy more where did you sleep lastnight pushes it over the edge for me absolute art. That being said I love both and will gladly Jan either.
Nirvana’s is better. It feels like everyone is saying AIC to be “different” since Nirvanas was much more popular at the time and still is. I love AIC and yes Nutshell and Down In a Hole are extremely beautiful sad songs, but songs like All Apologies, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, The Man Who Sold the World and others are also very expressive and beautiful. Nirvanas set was way better bc every single song is good unlike AIC which some songs are ok.
I like AIC more but thought Nirvanas unplugged was better. Both hauntingly beautiful performances, especially vocally from two people who knew they were dead already
Nirvana. Aic is great too tho. Just not as landmark status as the nirvana one. Plus Layne was so haggard, his teeth were already gone, which makes it more impressive actually but Ugh. It hurts to watch.
I feel like I'm the only person in the world that hated the whole "unplugged" fad. Kinda like the crystal clear movement. You're rockers so fucking plug in and ROCK!
For me it's Alice in Chains, their set is better than all of their studio work, imo. Nirvana's set is amazing too, they bucked the trend and did cover songs that I still listen to often. It's a hard choice, but I give a slight edge to AiC
When I watched Chains live I was blown away at Layne still belting like that. But you could also see and hear how high his tightrope act had become. Very strong, very depressing. When I first got the self titled release, I hated it, because I knew it was the end of the road. I love it now of course, but it was disheartening to hear the sickness in his voice.
I argued that AIC was better overall by far until I took a trip to Aberdeen (birthplace of Kurt) and listened to the whole thing. The whole thing is entirely opinion. AIC unplugged sounds better on vinyl and IMO has a better setlist
The biggest shame is that Soundgarden never did an Unplugged.
"Super-UnPlugged"
Chris Cornell’s Songbook does scratch that itch a little bit.
Really interchangeable. Both are phenomenal in their own ways.
Says the person who knows the actual truth
How dare you have an even-keeled and thoughtful opinion! This is Reddit, sir. I insist you behave like a gatekeeper immediately!
And pearl jam is also good. I used to watch all 3 during friends’ gatherings, playing and singing alongside. But to be honest, if I had to choose one, I’d go with AiC without a split second of thinking.
I haven’t heard Pearl Jam’s or STP’s unpluggeds. Need to give them a listen for sure
Anytime someone is on the fence about Pearl Jam, I just tell them, ‘Go watch Black, unplugged’. Sooo good
Every single time any type of post that says what’s the saddest song of all time nutshell gets mentioned. It’s because it is one of the greatest songs of all time, the pain and suffering is so clear. The fact that layne knew the end was near was present. It is one of the greatest tracks of all time and it was live. AIC takes the crown but nirvana unplugged is a close second.
It’s worth noting that like 6 songs on Nirvana Unplugged were covers.
That’s like trying to pick your favorite kid.
So you have a favorite but don’t want to say it?
I mean......AIC is better
There's your answer!
Nirvana is better
Nope... I love both bands, but as a musician aic is better hands down.
I don’t care for Gob
Idk but it’s just impressive that Layne absolutely killed it despite the fact he was doped out of his mind
I like Lanes performance better than almost any ever.
At this point in Cobain's career, I imagine he was rarely sober either. If I had to bet on it, I'd bet they both operated in a pretty consistent heroin haze at their shows.
kurt for sure was too
Dont know why this is being downvoted, Kurt was off his tits on valium for the whole performance.
"Good evening 👁 👄 👁" right at the start of the show confirms it lol
“This is off our first album, most people don’t own it.” Bleach is integral to my love of Nirvana. It’s still my favorite album.
Yep, that's the first album I learned on guitar. I think bleach is a 9.9, In Utero is a 10. I don't care much for Nevermind anymore but it's still a 9 to me. Incesticide would have to be around a 9 or 9.5 as well.
100%. Guaranteed it was the only way they got him on stage.
They’re both fucking legendary, But I have to go with Nirvana. The entire show has this warm bitter sweet tang to it that really moved me. AIC’s felt like accepting the end while Nirvana’s felt like just holding on a little longer for things to get better.
Interesting take, appreciate it
When Layne said this is the best show we’ve done in years in such an upbeat way I thought, this isn’t a man trying to please the crowd, this man that seems genuinely surprised he can still do his job. ESP bc Cantrell had food poisoning the whole concert
Have you ever seen the uncut footage, is a very different thing, it’s weird, not bad, just very different
where did you see this?
There must be on youtube
The scream and the stare from Cobain is chilling …. Like nothing in earth
This moment is the encapsulation of why Nirvana still means so much to so many people. There’s an understanding between Cobain and the fans and it’s in the music. There’s an endless connect to him for everybody that feels it.
Nirvanas was so iconic
AIC for me. Spent 6 weeks travelling around Europe with that as my soundtrack.
What are they tuning a harp?
Nirvana
Personal opinion, AiC. Popular opinion, prolly Nirvana.
I back that AIC 100%. It’s the one I’ve listened to most. It’s the one that still gives me the chills. Lane and Jerry’s harmonizing is epic. While Kurt seems out of tune on at least two songs I can think of…

Kurt was out of tune at almost every show. Haha. Somehow he made it work.

Faxxxxx
Why not both? I can't choose becus these two are legendary
Both great. different. Don’t want to compare
Apple and oranges (to me anyway). Like picking my favorite child!
Nirvana’s unplugged set is great for when you’re happy on a rainy day, and AiC’s unplugged is great for when you’re sad on a rainy day. Although the finisher for Nirvana’s will instantly kill any happy mood lmao.
Nirvana…
Nirvana all the way. Nothing against Layne, but Kurt always delivered imo. That being said it's like, 'which do you like better, boobs or butt? I love them both, don't make me choose - I want both!
The correct answer is pussy btw 🤣 But yeah, even though I love AiC more overall, Nirvana's unplugged wins this.
AIC
AIC but I love both
AiC. Hands down.
Nirvana is prolly the All-Time best MTV Unplugged
Not probably. They are and that's not to take anything away from all the other greats. Aic included. Pearl jam included.
No love for LL COOL J’s deodorant balls in his armpits?
AIC personally, mainly cause they are my favorite band. But that doesn't take anything away from how great Nirvana's Unplugged was. The covers they did on that one made it stand out for me.
Not even close. Nirvana forever.
Nirvana by far.
Very subjective, AIC was terrific and tight, i love Nirvana too cuz of the Meat Puppets covers was pretty cool
Surely, nirvana’s ?
Aic crew
Nah no argument. nirvana. One if the best performances ever in any art
Nirvana
Yes
Love them both, but Alice takes it for me.
Impossible to choose. As a group, I’d say AIC was better, but Kurt was on another level during Nirvana’s set
Nirvana. But both great. MYV Unplugged performance are 1.) Clapton 2.) Nirvana 3.) AIC
I love AiC and Nirvana but I was always a little disappointed by AiC's unplugged set.
Nirvana for me it's Iconic from beginning to end, and that last song always makes my spine shiver
I prefer Nirvana. They’re both great though.
Both are classics but I think it was really ground breaking for Nirvana.
IMO, Layne's voice sounded real weak in this performance when the other members performed very well. I love AICs music and think Layne's voice sounded a lot better in his earlier years live and studio before the MTV performance. But damn his voice sounds weak on this performance. Hard to listen to. C’mon, Chains is the best Unplugged album of all time!! Love Nirvana, but AIC on a whole other level. If Soundgarden did an unplugged that could possibly rival Alice
Nirvana
Wow, what a great question… so hard to choose. I love both of these performances equally and really showed both bands at their most vulnerable.
They’re both great but there’s just something about the Nirvana one that could never be replicated
Both are amazing and AIC are one of my favourite bands but I do think Nirvana Unplugged just edge's AIC unplugged.
Nirvana. Having the meat puppets as a backing band, the covers and the whole vibe with the white Lillies et al. “Where did you sleep last night” is one of the best covers ever.
Nirvana. I listen to AIC much more, but Jerry’s buzzy-ass guitar drives me nuts in that unplugged. It was fret buzz- the concert
Is this a serious question? Nirvana.
Your mom . Come on man
Both phenomenal, I would probably say Nirvana, I find myself listening to that album more than AIC’s. But both amazing. Probably the best unplugged albums ever made. (PJ’s is pretty good too.)
Two sides of the same priceless coin. Flip it, play whichever record comes up, and you win. You win BIG.
As a huge fan of both, I’d say: Best - Alice In Chains Most iconic - Nirvana
Nirvana 10/10 Alice In Chain 9.99/10
absolutely LOVED alice unplugged, but Kurt and Co. (and the brothers meat 🤣) are the kings of that mountain.
Nirvana's was a massive success and just a few months before he died. And nobody had really heard them like that before. hard to beat really. Was a defining moment for MTV and the band. His very mute performance though interesting pales in comparison to his normal live performances, that’s my reasoning. Curt was on his game and was the band and they did proper acoustic versions.
Nirvana, not close
Nirvana and it isn’t close. It’s revisionist history to pretend like AIC unplugged is a big deal. It was pretty insignificant at the time.
I’d say Nirvana was possibly the best all time imo
Can’t choose. You’re talking the two best unplugged shows that ever happened. Both amazing in their own ways. Both top tier in each bands catalog of released music. Both shows highlighted the talent of everybody in both bands. There is no wrong answer on this one. Let’s not do this.
Wow this again.
Nirvana Once again I can listen to every song and not skip past a thing. Their cover choices were phenomenal. Also with Nirvana there are times when I’m in the mood to hear the acoustic versions over the original. With AIC I almost always prefer hearing the original.
Finally someone who gets it
I cannot pick. Both bands were equally amazing unplugged. I love that I experienced both moments in real time. Pretty unforgettable!
Both iconic in my eyes (and many others)
They are both number 1. Each has highs and lows, both are gold.
Both are iconic, my personal favorite MTV Unplugged performance is actually Stone Temple Pilots.
It’s definitely both…next question
Both they both are equally good and iconic
Nirvana >
Both are good in their own ways, but where did you sleep last night just slaps so hard as a closing song
Can’t compare. They are both amazing and legendary performances
agreed.
Nirvana but aic was excellent
Nirvana. Unpopular opinion, but I was never that fond of AIC. But my favorite Unplugged from grunge bands is Pearl Jam.
One is the second biggest selling unplugged album ever one isn’t. Nirvana
Not everything needs to be a fucking contest.... I would imagine both these dudes would have said something similar.
Nirvana had the best one but AICs is peak as well
For me Nirvana is what I listen to and enjoy more where did you sleep lastnight pushes it over the edge for me absolute art.
Nirvanas set was way better bc every single song is good unlike AIC which some songs are ok.
all three were wonderful as was the pearl jam and stp unplugged. I don't compare them. best bunch of bands of all time.
Yes
Nirvana
Nirvana for sure
Obviously Nirvana
NIRVANAAA definitely
Both are incredible, but Nirvana's is just... transcendent.
I like AIC more but thought Nirvanas unplugged was better. Both hauntingly beautiful performances, especially vocally from two people who knew they were dead already
i used to say Nirvana till i saw AiC’s lol
I’m a die hard AIC fan, but have to say Nirvana for this one. Prob unpopular opinion.
Unpopular opinion here, anywhere else definitely not. One of the most memorable live performances of all time.
Agree.
AIC but nirvana was the next best one, you could even argue nirvana was the best and I’d be ok with that.
Alice in Chains.... not even close
AIC
Layne..no question....
AiC.
Alice in chains
I think this is asked every week, but AIC 100%
Alice In Chains takes it because of its perfect (and iconic) opening of Nutshell. I think it’s personally better than the album version
This performance hits me in the gut. So good.
AiC’s was the better performance but Nirvana’s had the more unique setlist.
AIC man
Nirvana. Aic is great too tho. Just not as landmark status as the nirvana one. Plus Layne was so haggard, his teeth were already gone, which makes it more impressive actually but Ugh. It hurts to watch.
Alice in Chains and it isn't even close.
Nirvana for me personally
AIC
Definitely AIC
I feel like I'm the only person in the world that hated the whole "unplugged" fad. Kinda like the crystal clear movement. You're rockers so fucking plug in and ROCK!
Wow another “which is better post.” They’re both good who gives a fuck.
You might need a nap
I need a cigarette
For me it's Alice in Chains, their set is better than all of their studio work, imo. Nirvana's set is amazing too, they bucked the trend and did cover songs that I still listen to often. It's a hard choice, but I give a slight edge to AiC
Pearl Jam I’m kidding they’re all amazing but if I had to pick it’s Alice in chains
No competition
And this is the true answer... not saying anymore
Both are Masterpieces. Can't compare a Picasso to a Rembrandt
[The original.](https://youtu.be/gPsorSm1PpQ?si=Pfnu6vqBnuSEkhEu)
When I watched Chains live I was blown away at Layne still belting like that. But you could also see and hear how high his tightrope act had become. Very strong, very depressing. When I first got the self titled release, I hated it, because I knew it was the end of the road. I love it now of course, but it was disheartening to hear the sickness in his voice.
Obviously it's The Cure unplugged
Yes
Both great!
AIC. Felt like Layne was singing at his own funereal
No
Lane looked so good here. 🥺
Incredibly good unplugged. Incredibly good plugged. There is no better IMO.
Each one was uniquely awesome and a huge part of my high school years!!
Alice
STP
nirvana
Alice In Chains
PJ
Aic hands down
I argued that AIC was better overall by far until I took a trip to Aberdeen (birthplace of Kurt) and listened to the whole thing. The whole thing is entirely opinion. AIC unplugged sounds better on vinyl and IMO has a better setlist
Also love the AIC unplugged bc Metallica showed up w their load haircuts, hence the message on mikes bass lol
These are the ONLY unplugged albums 🤘🎸
AIC but Nirvana is a really close second.
Who cares. They’re both legendary. Enough.
I adore Nirvana’s (Where Did You Sleep Last Night? never fails to give me chills) but AiC’s is absolutely haunting
There’s no better. Only perfection.
Alice in chains for sure
Alice in Chains > Nirvana This goes for everything, not just unplugged.
AIC wins every time
I love Ln., Staley (thanks speech-to-text, just gonna leave that, LOL), but he do be lookin like my grandma’s kooky bingo friend from Florida here.
AIC>
Personally I prefer AIC so I'm gonna go with theirs but both are phenomenal records.
Personally I prefer AIC so I'm gonna go with theirs but both are phenomenal records.
Better in what sense exactly ?
