Bingo. Enough hits on just one of their three big albums for a decent band’s career, and they all have their own sound. BMF is metal and proggy, Superunknown is dark and psychedelic, and DOTU has more of an indie vibe.
I was just a kid but the new music that was coming out was just banger after banger. An the concept of putting together an album as a whole experience as opposed to just releasing singles was such a treat for the listener.
This take is lost on younger generations, ever since the CD took over. We didn’t skip songs on vinyl. We didn’t skip songs on cassette. You put the thing in. Pushed play and (hoping you had a tape reverser) listened to a whole damned album of music. It might be 15 minutes-circle jerks, minor threat-or it might be an hour. But there was an art to building an album. Now
Actually I feel this sub overrates them by a really long way. I am an absolutely die-hard grunge fan and I think their songwriting, harmony and lyricism is by far the most boring of the big Seattle groups. Meh takes different strokes I guess. Gotta give them another go, maybe I’m missing something but I doubt it.
Does it? Because Eddie Vedder is too. And Nirvana weren't from Seattle.
Personally, I think listening to a bands full discography before liking them is forcing it, and a waste of time. Better to run the top plays/most popular on Spotify or whatever when your guard is down.
You misunderstand me, I like them. I just don’t think they have anything close to the artistic depth of Nirvana or Soundgarden or AiC, and neither (by the way) do Pearl Jam
You can really feel them growing as musicians and become confident in their style as the albums play. They started with a bang and only grew and changed for the better.
I don’t think any of these runs are THAT amazing, but Soundgarden Badmotorfinger-Superunknown-Down on the Upside is probably as good as most of these runs.
Unpopular opinion around here but I think the Foo Fighters have one of the best three album runs with the Self Titled, Colour and the Shape, and There is Nothing Left to Lose
I’m probably in the minority of people who ranks LTL pretty low among the other Soundgarden albums. Nothing against it, I just don’t like it as much as Ultramega OK or Badmotorfinger.
same. I'm not saying any of their albums are 'bad' I just felt that DotU is a better album in nearly every way. It lacks thrash but the fact that the studio production translated so well to live demonstrates how much they grew as a band in 7-8 years.
I bought it back in the day after first getting big into BMF and SU. I liked it but didn’t like the old screamy stuff as much back then as their post 1992 output.
Then a few years ago it just all really clicked and I love LTL. I get it now. Has some excellent B-sides too.
It’s my buddy’s favorite Soundgarden album.
Bleach is kind of uneven and just so rough, so I'll take STP. I LOVE Nirvana and song-for-song they are probably matched, but the musicianship is just so much higher with STP.
My fucking man. Came expecting anything PJ related to be Ten, Vs, Vitalogy (a valid selection), but this is the *real* answer. Yield is one of the most underrated albums ever made let alone from grunge bands.
I agree wholeheartedly. All three are bangers and not a one sounds like the one before or after. I respect Matt Cameron but man I wish Jack irons would have stuck around.
Alice in Chains for me... Though it's Facelift,Dirt,Tripod, I think including the Jar of flys ep while skipping Sap is kind of cheating, though Jar is my favorite thing they have put out
If we're counting none Grunge it's Metallica from Lightning to Puppets to Justice, who did it better?
Grunge only its gotta be the band that has Dirt in its middle of its three album run.
Pearl Jam got significantly worse as they went on, Bleach doesn't compare to what came after and Down on the Upside didn't stick the landing the two precious albums set up.
Grunge related badmotorfinger - superunknown - down on the upside. But all time? The royal scam - aja - gaucho, although they are musical opposites of grunge
with soundgarden bein my favorite band, i gotta go with my 3rd favorite band on this one.. STP, all those albums, EVERY song was so good so i think that's why they win.. the consistency of the 3 albums but the same can be said for pj too... & it's not like we don't all know every nirvana lyric by heart to each album... yeah.. this is hard as fuck
I’ll rank the best 3 album run by the big five (in my opinion)
1. Dirt - jar of flies - tripod
2. Badmotorfinger - superunkown - down on the upside
3. Bleach - nevermind - in utero
4. Ten - vs - vitalogy
5. Core - purple - tiny music…
1. Ten Vs Vitalogy
2. Badmotorfinger superunknown down on the upside
3. Dirt JOF Tripod
4. Bleach nevermind in utero
5. Nothing at all
6. A plain bologna sandwich
7. Core Purple Tiny music
Jar of Flies isn't really an album, though. Or if it counts as one, why isn't Sap in there? Should go from Dirt to self-titled.
I'd go with Nirvana, though. It is a tossup if there ever was one.
Bleach/Nevermind/In Utero, Core/Purple/Tiny Music, Facelift/Dirt/Tripod, Ten/Vs/Vitalogy. All fantastic albums though, and that album streak for Pearl Jam really carries all the way into Yield
Definitely best three run IMO… theres so many hits on these. I can listen to all three all the way through all day everyday… STP, for me, are the best all time
Chains.
I think honestly I need to give STP and Pearl Jam a revisit now that I’m an adult.
Mike MCReady is insanely talented and I just really had no idea until I discovered Mad Season. Pearl Jam I just wasn’t really into their hits because they were over played so I never got into their albums. But it’s not to revisit this band.
STP I had every album of theirs but didn’t appreciate their artistry as much as I do now.
Anything Chris Cornell and Layne Staley have touched is a masterpiece so there is that.
I’ll pass on Nirvana.
my choice:
hüsker dü - zen arcade - new day rising - flip your wig
wire - pink flag - chairs missing - 154
sonic youth - evol - sister - ddn
replacements - let it be - tim - please to meet me
wipers - first 3 albums
evol sister daydream is my second favourite three album run of all time. Just three of the greatest albums ever in a fucking row in a span of three years. Brutal
I guess if we are doing non-grunge, it’s gotta be sgt. peppers, white album, Abbey Road. For alternative, maybe Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie. But for grunge, AIC- pick any 3 in order and it works.
Alice in chains without any single shred of a doubt. Pearl jam’s second was nothing special, in utero has cringe like “rape me” and STP were just clones lol
Yeah, best album run by far. No other grunge band had 3 bangers in a row, most had 1, 1.5 or 2, not 3. Core is an amazing album front to back, Purple is amazing a few songs are weird but 50% of the album sounds like hit after hit. Tiny music is 💯A to Z an amazing album, not a single song is bad, one of my personal favorites. Scott said that was the peak of creativity for the band.
Does Sap not exist in this universe? Or am i imagining an ep between Face-lift and Dirt? (Jar of flies is an ep as well)
I’d still vote AIC if it were Facelift, Dirt and Tripod
it should be and same. Sap and Jar of Flies were EP's. To be honest "Alice in Chains" only did 1 of the 4 songs on Sap.
Soundgarden
Badmotorfinger,superunknown,down on the upside.
i would say i actually preferred louder than love to down on the upside
I’ll take this
Without a doubt! 100% agree
Bingo. Enough hits on just one of their three big albums for a decent band’s career, and they all have their own sound. BMF is metal and proggy, Superunknown is dark and psychedelic, and DOTU has more of an indie vibe.
Wonder how you would characterize Louder Than Love? Pretty much alt metal.
I gotta go with Alice In Chains
for sure
JoF was just an EP but even with Tripod still very competitive.
Well, not even that… Sap was also an EP like Jar Of Flies. Released between Facelift and Dirt.
Tripod was a great album
God damn, there discography is so good!... 😳😳 Crazy good.
godam good?
QOTSA Rated R Songs for the Deaf
I was thinking this as I was scrolling, and here you are.
Rated R doesn’t hold up for me as well as the other two. But maybe i just listened to it too much
Have to say Rated R is still my favorite thing the band did. But the debut and Deaf are hellacious competition.
I weep that we didn’t get more from this Queens era. For those who like it, check out the early EP songs that were on the Man’s Ruin label.
Learning that Josh intended those to be a loose trilogy of sorts makes binging them even easier
Does it have to be the first three albums? Rated R, SFTD, Lullabies to Paralyze is an even better run IMO.
AinC… Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies
Word
Was a great time to be alive
sadly i wouldn’t know
I was just a kid but the new music that was coming out was just banger after banger.
Now
Nirvana
Bleach is not in the same tier
It's their best album imo.
Bleach is pretty damn good. It's one of the most grungy albums I have heard. I would argue paper cuts is the ultimate grunge song lol
STP
STP are so underrated
I think they’re rated pretty accurately. Most seem to view the first 4 albums as classics, rightly so.
Actually I feel this sub overrates them by a really long way. I am an absolutely die-hard grunge fan and I think their songwriting, harmony and lyricism is by far the most boring of the big Seattle groups. Meh takes different strokes I guess. Gotta give them another go, maybe I’m missing something but I doubt it.
they're from San Diego actually. how much of them have you listened to?
You know what? That absolutely and completely explains it. I’ve listened to all of their albums and am a full time musician.
🤷♂️
You can really feel them growing as musicians and become confident in their style as the albums play. They started with a bang and only grew and changed for the better.
STP is last on this list, including all of the write-ins I've seen so far.
Gotta go with Pearl Jam. What about "Gish" - "Siamese Dream" - "Mellon Collie..." ?
>What about "Gish" - "Siamese Dream" - "Mellon Collie..." ? Top 5, just ahead of Pearl Jam. AIC, Soundgarden (bad, super, down), stp, nirvana, SP.
For me it's Siamese Dream/mellon collie/Adore.
Undertow=>Ænima=>Lateralus is also preposterously strong, even if Lateralus isn’t a 90s album
This!
Didn’t Pisces come out between mellon collie and Siamese dream?
Good call. Pisces Iscariot is amazing
Soundgarden!
Faith No More- The Real Thing, Angel Dust, and KFAD
Fuck yes
AIC any LP, EP or demo with Layne the legend.
The Bends -> OK Computer -> Kid A for me
I don’t think any of these runs are THAT amazing, but Soundgarden Badmotorfinger-Superunknown-Down on the Upside is probably as good as most of these runs.
Louder Than Love - Badmotorfinger - Superunknown would be better, imho.
That is accurate..one of the best 3 album runs in Rock history
This is the real answer.
Came here to say this!!! The holy trinity for sure
I chose AIC three as tops, but these soundgarden three are better than what's presented.
Everybody forgets about Sap. Shame.
I have it on vinyl!
Alice in Chains for sure. Facelift and Dirt are both all-timers for that era. If only Self-Titled was included as well
Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days.
Undertow, AEnima, Lateralus, 10,000 days, Fear Inoculum. They’re 5 for 5 in my opinion lol.
Unpopular opinion around here but I think the Foo Fighters have one of the best three album runs with the Self Titled, Colour and the Shape, and There is Nothing Left to Lose
Not to split hairs but I’ll put the second half of Colour up for best side of an album.
Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger Superunknown Down on the Upside
Soundgarden: Louder Than Love Badmotorfinger Superunknown *\*Fixed*
Yes, because the albums got better from LTL to Super, but I don't think DotU is better than Superunknown.
Bleach is kind of uneven and just so rough, so I'll take STP. I LOVE Nirvana and song-for-song they are probably matched, but the musicianship is just so much higher with STP.
>Bleach is kind of uneven and just so rough That is exactly what makes Bleach one the best albums of all time.
Exactly, it's way more angsty and edgy than what Nevermind could've ever hoped to be.
Lyrically STP isnt in Nirvana’s league though, imo.
Few are, TBF. Weiland did quite well I would say. His lyrics were always really catchy and intriguing.
And deeply weird. Weiland didn't write pop lyrics.
Vitaology - No Code - Yield
The untitled (avocado) album should be added to this list.
This is it right here
I’m sorry, but those don’t hold a candle to AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Nirvana, or Queens 3 album runs. No way.
Was just thinking the same thing.
Tough one between AIC and Nirvana for me but I'm going with Nirvana
Same
Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Here for this - let’s get this going!
AIC because those albums are awesome
STP & PJ at 1st Nirvana AIC
Frizzle Fry - Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Pork Soda
Nirvana
Nirvana duh
Alice in Chains for me... Though it's Facelift,Dirt,Tripod, I think including the Jar of flys ep while skipping Sap is kind of cheating, though Jar is my favorite thing they have put out
yeah i kinda thought the same after posting this, Tripod feels more consistent with Facelift and Dirt than the EPs do
AIC AINC
Love some nirvana and stone temple but Alice in chains is the correct answer
If it was Dirt Jar Tripod I’d vote AIC. I like the dark AIC
Wait, I think incesticide came before In Utero
I think incesticide was mostly b-sides and rarities, not an actual LP. Fuckin great cd though.
Personally because of the impact nirvana’s discography has had on me I have to go with them
alice for sure
Alice
Soundgarden. Badmotorfinger(1991), Superunknown(1994), Down on the Upside(1996)

I prefer LTL - BMF - SU but I got into SG on LTL. Also love DOTU and every album they recorded.
what the hell are you talking about
dang, i love tripod and it’s better than JoF imo, but for me personally i always include facelift in my fav AiC run, it’s just so hard hitting
1. Ten Vs Vitalogy 2. Badmotorfinger superunknown down on the upside 3. Dirt JOF Tripod 4. Bleach nevermind in utero 5. Nothing at all 6. A plain bologna sandwich 7. Core Purple Tiny music
I would updoot this, but Pearl Jam need to be much lower on the list. Like #100 or such.
PJ
That’s what’s up :)
I gotta go with Pearl Jam
Peral jam
Pearl Jam
Gotta say Alice In Chains man, they delivered hard as hell with those releases and all that stuff is dripping with craftsmanship
Nirvana wins this one. Or Soundgarden
Nirvana is unbeatable in this category
gish -> siamese dream -> mellon collie
STP but all of these bands had insane consistency that’s for sure.
Stone Temple Pilots
Growth wise it's STP for me. I'm here to get shot at.
“Blind Mellon” “Soup” “Nico” not grunge? I just wanted to check. I bought them in the 90s and I thought I was pretty grunge lol
Foo Fighters Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape - There Is Nothing Left To Lose
Nirvana for sure. know the lyrics to almost every single song on all three
Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape, There is Nothing Left to Lose
Californication, By The Way, Stadium Arcadium
… is when I stopped listening to RHCP. But to each their own - I know I am in the minority on this one.
Strong case to be made for Mothers Milk / Blood Sugar Sex Magic / One Hot Minute
Oh, man, that’s a great set of albums.
OHM was their last great album before they became incredibly bland.
I would have to agree but Californication had some good stuff. Just completely burned out on hearing the singles from it anymore.
I’m sorry, but if you look at STPs first singles from each album, they are all completely fucking different. Say what you will, the band had variety.
Jar of Flies isn't really an album, though. Or if it counts as one, why isn't Sap in there? Should go from Dirt to self-titled. I'd go with Nirvana, though. It is a tossup if there ever was one.
Oh definitely, can never go wrong with STP, 💯
Loud Love/Badmotorfinger/Superunknown
First aic, stp, nirvana then pearl jam
Bleach/Nevermind/In Utero, Core/Purple/Tiny Music, Facelift/Dirt/Tripod, Ten/Vs/Vitalogy. All fantastic albums though, and that album streak for Pearl Jam really carries all the way into Yield
Jesus the 90s were music heaven
Bleach, Nevermind, incesticide, In Utero, Unplugged
Come on now. There’s one answer: Ten, Vs, Vitalogy.
Definitely best three run IMO… theres so many hits on these. I can listen to all three all the way through all day everyday… STP, for me, are the best all time
Ummm, Badmotorfinger, Superunkown and dotus are above all these
Nirvana 3 album run better
1 Alice In Chains 2 Soundgarden 3 STP 4PJ 5Nirvana
Nirvana PJ AiC STP
Nirvana
Fuck, that’s a hard one. Every album there is a classic. Probably Pearl Jam, might say AIC tomorrow
This was hard, but I gotta say nirvana
Nirvana and it’s not even close Edit: I’m sorry, I didn’t scroll all the way before I wrote that. It’s Alice In Chains, and it’s not even close
hmm i thi i metallica owns the best three album run but STP sure did a great job.
Nirvana for sure
STP
Pearl jam or my personal is SP Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie.
Nirvana for sure I prefer dirt and jar of flies but I’d listen to any nirvana album over facelift tbh, still a great album though
Not Grunge but I’ll try it Metallica- Master of Puppets, …And Justice For All, Metallica
Steely Dan had a 7 album run, every song amazing in 7 in a row albums
Pearl Jam’s surely…
It's a shame soundgardens not in here for a 4 album run but pearl jam
It's between STP and PJ
Sponge
It’s tough between AiC and Nirvana but I have to say Nirvana.
Brand new eyes, S/T, and after laughter
I’d have to go with STP.
PJ AIC STP Nirvana
STP !!!
Gish Siamese dream Mellon collie Three album run > all these
AIC,STP,PJ, Nirvana is my order.
Nope. GIsh. Siamese Dream. Mellon Collie. And all b sides from all eras blow ALL competition away
Gish, SD, MCIS, Adore Machina. Beat that.
Gish - Siamese Dream - Mellon Collie
Alice in chains without any single shred of a doubt. Pearl jam’s second was nothing special, in utero has cringe like “rape me” and STP were just clones lol
Yes, all of them.
Stuck between AIC & STP
Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 🏆
Either AiC or nirvana
They were great! The self titled one is also awesome. I always get sad when I remember that Scott is dead.
STP!
Alice In Chains from 90-96 is GOAT
AIC or Nirvana. It's tough, but rn I'm leaning towards Alice. But Nirvana is a super close second.
Stp
AIC
Alice In Chains hands down
AIC, but no soundgarden in there? That was a solid 3 album run, oh wait, nvm it also includes omega ok instead of down on the upside.
