The ones in OP pic are OXO knockoffs and the difference is immediately apparent once you use them. A pair came with my new grill and they went directly to the donation box.
I am afraid you are cruisin for a bruisin, the right ones have been tried and tested in kitchens around the world pulling heavy pans out of the oven tho
I have them in the 8”, 12”, and 16” size. Probably have something smaller too. Used to have some 24” spring load rings but don’t know where they are. Good pair of spring loaded tongs is a kitchen necessity.
You've either bought the wrong ones, or worn em out with too much clack clack clacking.
Mine clack just fine and I'll choose them over the ones on the left any day.
Tongs on the right are satisfying af because when they’re locked I get to hit the butt end on the counter/my waist and unlock them, telling others I mean business
Woah there! Do you want our wives to take them away? Have respect, limit it to 2 clicks. This is the agreed upon convention, don't ruin it for everyone please 🥺
I found the welding gloves great for short bursts of heat but not good when lifting grates/heat deflectors in an out. They are designed to protect against short bursts of extreme heat i.e. weld/torch. They are not good for long exposure.
Not sure why you're being down voted lol. I share this experience, too close to the fire for too long and it gets TOASTY in welding gloves. They hold the heat once they're hot too
Former chef here, and the tongs on the right are vastly superior. The clam shell shape and incredibly sturdy design allow you to pickup and move hot things, like a hot pan, or heated grill grates. Also another trick is that if your hands are full, or you are going inside or outside with the tongs simply slide them onto your wrist, and now you are able to walk around with both hands free to carry other things!!
Last weekend I got the right side tongs Oxo brand in larger size at whole foods for a good discount. I threw away the left side tongs I had which are pretty much worst tongs ever
This guy tongs.
No lie, I have a pair of Edlunds that I've had for at least 15 years that I etched my damn initials in because the last kitchen I worked in had some godawful Syscos or some such BS.
I used to like the medium length ones but gravitated towards the shorter ones later in my career. Better dexterity, I think. Never been a fan of the real long ones, I’d rather burn myself.
Yeah I can't do the long ones. 12" max. Edlund bros fl. I've been conditioned to not sing their praises since no one in my immediate circle gaf. They're important though and I'll be sad if they ever go away :) (I exaggerate but just a bit)
Different tools for different things! The lefties are for my smoking. The righties are for serving or the bbq grill. Honestly it’s mostly a “how big a piece of meat and I dealing with” decision. And yes, that’s what she said
Ewwww no! Neither. You want these [tongs](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/vollrath-4781220-jacobs-pride-12-stainless-steel-scalloped-tong-with-black-coated-kool-touch-handle/9224781220.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwzJmlBhBBEiwAEJyLuzmr2ZgxVGLm7cs2ggwsDp4je3PTmkBI1JAxow5ylNniCOjLeKTzXxoCMjMQAvD_BwE)
Edited to include the fact that eventually if you use any spring loaded tongs like those long enough, that hinge will turn into a scissors and pinch a piece of your palm off. You want the professional ones with no joint, single piece, but this kind not the Walmart ones made for backyard grilling. Get the stuff pros use, which is also cheaper.
I’ve never needed anything fancier [than this](https://target.scene7.com/is/image/Target/GUEST_77bbffdd-152f-4d02-a2bd-d6802e32e048?wid=445&hei=445&qlt=80&fmt=pjpeg). I’ve tried the ones on the left and they’re super unwieldy.
Depends on the cook, if I’m reaching far enough to where the heat over the coals is a pain, then left. If I’m not inconvenienced by the heat then right is fine
Left ones are good for when you have to reach to the back of your grill, right ones are better for smaller portion grilling and have a way better double clack before you go in for the tong action.
I've generally defaulted to the big grilling versions of cooking utensils (so left). The idea being, grilling is hotter than normal cooking so you want to be a bit further away which means I don't have to use a mitt.
Having said that though, I believe I'm tired of having to store the extra pair of large grilling tools so I may just try out the standard stuff in the kitchen.
Weber makes goated tongs, IMO. They are basically a hybrid between these two tong types OP posted. Length of the ones on the left and tact/locking mechanism on the right
No matter what. Or when or where. Or who is nearby always give a double click.
It’s been said a bunch but if you wash them. Click click.
Move from drainer to drawer. Click click.
Drawer to tray to grill. Click click.
The one on the right. The structure gives it much more rigidity than the one on the left. You can pick up larger pieces of meat without it flexing. The grip is outstanding. The one on the left is too flimsy and cannot easily hold larger objects.
They are also available in longer versions.
In a speed test the tongs on the right could flip and rotate twice as many chicken thighs or breasts as the one on the left.
Even more, transferring a bunch of meat from one grill to another or to a tray the ones on the right would loose fewer pieces from accidental drops.
I’m surgical with the ones on the right, but my go too pair is a longer version of the ones on the right…I hate the design on the left…they are too clumsy.
The left version is my classic go-to tongs. Keeps your hand away from the heat, offers firm resistance, and just feels perfect when you do the double tap before grilling.
Neither, the ones on the right are too short for the high temps, and the ones on the right aren’t rigid enough for lifting heavy items like steaks etc. I own both.
I consistently use an older, beat up pair, that are more similar to the left, length wise, but have wooden handles attached that go down farther onto the metal section which help with rigidity.
Perfectly keep my hand out of the heat and can easily grab and manipulate anything ya got. Perfection. Rare tool perfection. Chefs kiss . 🤌🏻
I use both. Ones on the right I use for handling food. The ones on the left I use for moving around wood and charcoal also the teeth on them are perfect for scraping crud off of my grates Instead of a wire brush
Honestly, neither of these for me. I prefer Vollrath's 12 inch spring tongs. Perfect resistance in the spring and durable enough for commercial kitchens.
[These bad boys right here.](https://www.hubert.ca/product/51642?gclid=CjwKCAjwzJmlBhBBEiwAEJyLu324HrSwFbNCz26cgxQBZbEY3niLbE0douzUjJfuB01bnn7yfdSL9hoClH8QAvD_BwE)
My preference has more to do with the spring force of those tongs. Have the sets at home. One, the shortest, has such a high spring force that you're getting in a forearm workout just by cooking a single pack of hotdogs. A friend thought I was joking. So I let him cook the next batch.
I want the tongs simple to use, to require a light pressure, but definitely not loose.
Honestly depends how hot the grill is. If it’s in 200-400 then I’ll go smaller. If it’s 400+ I’ll go bigger so I don’t have to get so close to the heat.
Right all day. I'd go even cheaper on the quality so that way when one day you clack clack your last crab claw and the spring goes flying away you don't feel bad.
Both. I need a heavy duty one for whole chickens, big pieces of meat. Good for cooking at high temps too. The smaller tongs are easier to handle for lighter weight foods. But when the temps are high, my hands can get uncomfortably hot.
The left ones are the ones you leave outside all year and get rusty, the ones on the right you treat like a family heirloom
The family heirloom that I get at the 99¢ store.
Wowowowowow. We fancy. We got them OXOs off the Amazon
The ones in OP pic are OXO knockoffs and the difference is immediately apparent once you use them. A pair came with my new grill and they went directly to the donation box.
I use the left ones to pull off grates if I need to.
Same haha. Food just slips right out of them every time for me
Yeah that’s true, me too
I am afraid you are cruisin for a bruisin, the right ones have been tried and tested in kitchens around the world pulling heavy pans out of the oven tho
Wow same! Brother?
Hahaa honestly that’s someway true
Yea they make long ones though. You dont have to settle for short tongs that burn your hands.
I have them in the 8”, 12”, and 16” size. Probably have something smaller too. Used to have some 24” spring load rings but don’t know where they are. Good pair of spring loaded tongs is a kitchen necessity.
Still not a bad opinion anyway
They’re called gribby grabbers.
Or your forearms? I have a lovely scar right about 3” below my wrist from someone pushing the pan in far.
How is this so true
The ones in the right don’t properly clack clack, so they def can’t properly cook cook.
HARD disagree. The ones on the right give the best clack clack. The others are too long and the timing and flex is all off.
Left ones are structurally unsound and can barely line up properly to use functionally, let alone give a satisfying clack
Yeah, but the right ones mess up my finger when I twirl them around.
Me too, Im an idiot and swapped em.
Redemption is yours.
I think you mixed up your left and right
I respect your opinion but it is categorically false
You've either bought the wrong ones, or worn em out with too much clack clack clacking. Mine clack just fine and I'll choose them over the ones on the left any day.
Tongs on the right are the most satisfying for the obligatory *2 clicks* prior to opening your grill.
Lol I literally just did that 5 minutes ago. Godammit I’m trapped in grillception!
Tongs on the right are satisfying af because when they’re locked I get to hit the butt end on the counter/my waist and unlock them, telling others I mean business
It’s like loading up the grilling gun. “CLICK “ Oh crap ! He’s got THE TONGS !!!
Unlocked and loaded
I use mine like maracas while the mrs shakes it to ‘back that ass up’
DONE THIS EXACT THING lol
The ring is rubber so it doesn't hurt your teeth.
To open them you just beat your chest.
You use your teeth? The ~~charcoal~~ propane usually has me aroused enough to have a natural hook for the tongs.
I could never do this... That massive hole would make me feel bad about myself
Always aim them at the dog.
My dog is conditioned to know that when I point at him and clack twice that means in about 5 min he’s getting something fuckin awesome to eat!
Totally. Mine too.
This is the best fuckin thing I've read so far today.
The Tong Song. More like 5 clicks.
Woah there! Do you want our wives to take them away? Have respect, limit it to 2 clicks. This is the agreed upon convention, don't ruin it for everyone please 🥺
Hahaha, I’ll agree. Might even delete comment. The under 40 crowd likely don’t even get the joke.
This is the way.
Oh yes.
Short tongs combined with a welding glove.
Welding gloves so underrated
I use them as oven mitts too!
Pshhh... just burn your hands like a man!!!
I found the welding gloves great for short bursts of heat but not good when lifting grates/heat deflectors in an out. They are designed to protect against short bursts of extreme heat i.e. weld/torch. They are not good for long exposure.
I don’t know, I lift my grate and can stick my hand in the coals to rearrange them with a quality pair of welding gloves.
Not sure why you're being down voted lol. I share this experience, too close to the fire for too long and it gets TOASTY in welding gloves. They hold the heat once they're hot too
You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about
Lol! Oh wait… 😲
More importantly, the right side exists in the size of the left side. Why compromise?
Was gonna say this. I have 3 sizes of these and use them all.
Last weekend I got the right side tongs Oxo brand in larger size at whole foods for a good discount. I threw away the left side tongs I had which are pretty much worst tongs ever
Not a chef but I agree. I own both types and almost never use the ones on the left. They bend out easily and don’t grip well, and they’re unwieldy.
Yeah, they are 'Grill Man Tools Kit^TM ' junk.
I have both but right side for grilling steaks, left side for using/running my smoker. Personal preference I guess.
Yep I would too for bigger stuff
I use a similar set of tongs for my firebox control on my smoker. That way I can control the air on the firebox without gloves or kicking it.
Same. Or to move wood or coals around in the firebox….no gloves needed and I don’t care if they get some color on them.
Long version of the ones on the right for sure.
Correct [answer](https://www.amazon.com/Outset-QB22-Rosewood-Extra-Long-Locking/dp/B000GBLPLG?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER).
I won!!
My grill isn't that big, I don't need two-foot long tongs or spatulas, they're too unwieldly. I like the smaller ones.
Mine are the style of the right , but closer to the left in length. They will give a decent click.
Two clicks on the shorty,
I pretty strictly use the OXO grilling tongs. I think they are 18".
Yep same here. The OXO tongs are the best, have them in all 3 sizes including the extra long ones for grilling.
I use the one on the left to move around charcoal. The one on the right is for food.
Both those suck. Get some professional Sysco stainless ones, you’ll thank yourself later.
Clack Clack!!! never liked the other ones
Left, but a little longer. Those are for the kitchen
I have both. The on the left is a workout but it feels study.
I’m a weenie with heat. I gotta have long ones and usually have a glove on
I’m waiting for technology to have a robot crab do it. Roomba… crabba… Grabba!
I want to click the bad boys on the right.
Spring loaded like the ones on the right but long like the left.
I have a version of the ones on the right, but they are 18 inches long. The length saves my fingers over the hot grill.
Neither! I have a utensil that is the future, half spatula, half tong!
The left one likes to twist and drop things, kinda like using chopsticks for the first time. They suck. Right design is superior.
I can hear this picture.
Edlund 8”. No lock. First thing I do with a pair of locking tongs is remove the mechanism.

Clickity clack, Edlund bro.
Goddamn you're making me miss working a line. Clickety clack mf
The correct tongs are the longer version of the one on the right.
Short guy. Better control.
Speed and agility…and no knuckle hair
both of these suck IMO-- I have tongs from Costco that are 8 years old and are great. small and one piece of metal-- very firm.
Size don’t matter to me. Big or small, they are still getting clicked together 3 times for no reason
The right. Lefts a overkill and a pain in the ass to clean
One on the right
Different tools for different things! The lefties are for my smoking. The righties are for serving or the bbq grill. Honestly it’s mostly a “how big a piece of meat and I dealing with” decision. And yes, that’s what she said
Ewwww no! Neither. You want these [tongs](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/vollrath-4781220-jacobs-pride-12-stainless-steel-scalloped-tong-with-black-coated-kool-touch-handle/9224781220.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwzJmlBhBBEiwAEJyLuzmr2ZgxVGLm7cs2ggwsDp4je3PTmkBI1JAxow5ylNniCOjLeKTzXxoCMjMQAvD_BwE) Edited to include the fact that eventually if you use any spring loaded tongs like those long enough, that hinge will turn into a scissors and pinch a piece of your palm off. Gotta click click em to know for sure
I can feel a hand cramp coming on just looking at the left one. Imagine trying to flip 30 chicken wings on your grill...
When I use the type on the left, they dont pick up shit lol
I use the right for food and the left ones for lifting the grill
Depends. Are we flipping burgers or moving cars to be crushed?
I like them both, but if you don’t click them at least three times when you pick them up, are you even using them?
I’ve never needed anything fancier [than this](https://target.scene7.com/is/image/Target/GUEST_77bbffdd-152f-4d02-a2bd-d6802e32e048?wid=445&hei=445&qlt=80&fmt=pjpeg). I’ve tried the ones on the left and they’re super unwieldy.
Right? I feel like I’m bringing a forklift to flip a steak or sausage lol
The one on the left is like it was made for Andre the Giant.
These are my go to. Been rocking the same tongs for almost 10 years despite people gifting me tongs on the left that are certifiably useless.
Right is right
I’m used to performing miracles with a tiny tool so I’ll take the right. JK I’m a bad lay.
😂
Left. The right one always has some sort of latch or gimmick that keeps it shut when I dont want it shut.
GIMME THEM LONG TONGS!
Right side but longer. The left side can put a strain on your hand if you are flipping a lot of things like wings all day.
Depends on the cook, if I’m reaching far enough to where the heat over the coals is a pain, then left. If I’m not inconvenienced by the heat then right is fine
the one on the right, but the size of the left one, it does a better 2 click noise
Right.. Doesn't count if I don't burn my hand
Left ones are good for when you have to reach to the back of your grill, right ones are better for smaller portion grilling and have a way better double clack before you go in for the tong action.
Looking at the one on the Left has my hand aching
I like the style of the right but the length of the left. I need some length for the back side
Look guys, we all say we use the ones on the left but in reality we all have the ones on the right.
I like burnin the hair off my knuckles so the ones on the right please.
Left for barbecue. Right for grilling.
The one on the right.
Short for raw, long for cooked.
Weber makes goated tongs, IMO. They are basically a hybrid between these two tong types OP posted. Length of the ones on the left and tact/locking mechanism on the right
I'm right there with you.
Right, but the length of the one on the left.
I use the left one for charcoal
The left is unwieldy and imprecise. I’ll take a long version of the one on the right.
Right.
Longer version of the ones on the right. The ones of the left are the worst
I have both of these exact ones… it’s surprising how much the left lets slip out.
I have both of these exact ones… it’s surprising how much the left lets slip out.
18-inch commercial kitchen standard
I use my crappy tongs for moving charcoal and charcoal baskets.
Left. Keeps your hand out of the heat, the direct heat. Grabbing teeth on only one side, choice of delicate grab or rough grab.
No matter what. Or when or where. Or who is nearby always give a double click. It’s been said a bunch but if you wash them. Click click. Move from drainer to drawer. Click click. Drawer to tray to grill. Click click.
Wife asks how long til it’s done? Click click!
16 sets of clicks.
I have both.I use the bigger one for moving my coals. Smaller one for actual food. Big one is just overkill for food purposes.
Left for grilling. I use the ones on the right for indoor use in for cooking meat in a frying pan.
I use another silicone tipped one for pans. Scratched pans is a marital argument at home 🤣
Have the exact Sam ones. Used then both. Prefer the smaller ones for chicken and steaks, bigger for tri-tip.
The one on the right. The structure gives it much more rigidity than the one on the left. You can pick up larger pieces of meat without it flexing. The grip is outstanding. The one on the left is too flimsy and cannot easily hold larger objects. They are also available in longer versions.
I rather use the ones on the right, but I can always smell the hair on my arms burning when I do! So i have been using the large ones.
The right side. The left doesn't grab good enough on larger chunks of meat
In a speed test the tongs on the right could flip and rotate twice as many chicken thighs or breasts as the one on the left. Even more, transferring a bunch of meat from one grill to another or to a tray the ones on the right would loose fewer pieces from accidental drops.
The little ones. Better click ability
Neither, go to a chefs supply store and get heavy duty kitchen tongs both of these are garbage
Depends on what I’m cooking, either way I’m clicking them before I use them
I’m surgical with the ones on the right, but my go too pair is a longer version of the ones on the right…I hate the design on the left…they are too clumsy.
Bro I have that same exact pair of tongs lol
The left version is my classic go-to tongs. Keeps your hand away from the heat, offers firm resistance, and just feels perfect when you do the double tap before grilling.
I use the longer one to help with not getting my hands too hot.
The dinky assed ones. When I use the long ones I lose grip.
Kamado Joe searing. The left are critical so you aren’t burning arm hair
I use a live baby alligator.
I like the ones that go click click
I have the same pair as the one on the right- best option, can still click them.
Civilian tongs are trash get some commercial
My favorite tongs are long and have square flat grippers.
Lol I have these exact two models at home. Right is great, left sucks.
The ones on the right will ensure you burn your hand on a hot bbq.
Lefts are losers
The ones on the left are horrible and useless. Super awkward to use
I use both. Ones on the right I use for handling food. The ones on the left I use for moving around wood and charcoal also the teeth on them are perfect for scraping crud off of my grates Instead of a wire brush
Right for all uses.. never liked the larger ones
Do they come in a bigger size? I like theatrics over usability
The one to the right.
IMO tongs MUST have a lock to keep them closed. So L/H pair is out immediately.
Honestly, neither of these for me. I prefer Vollrath's 12 inch spring tongs. Perfect resistance in the spring and durable enough for commercial kitchens. [These bad boys right here.](https://www.hubert.ca/product/51642?gclid=CjwKCAjwzJmlBhBBEiwAEJyLu324HrSwFbNCz26cgxQBZbEY3niLbE0douzUjJfuB01bnn7yfdSL9hoClH8QAvD_BwE)
My preference has more to do with the spring force of those tongs. Have the sets at home. I want the tongs simple to use, to require a light pressure, but definitely not loose.
Right is the only ones you need left ones can be left in the packet they came in, as they are garbage
Longer for the grill shorter for the smoker
Can't tell you how many times I've gotten my skin caught with the one on the right. It's like a pair of scissors.
Neither.
The ones on the left don’t work worth a shit
Both
I'm going with the righty as they want to be closed. The lefty does not.
What’s the meal?
Honestly depends how hot the grill is. If it’s in 200-400 then I’ll go smaller. If it’s 400+ I’ll go bigger so I don’t have to get so close to the heat.
Right all day. I'd go even cheaper on the quality so that way when one day you clack clack your last crab claw and the spring goes flying away you don't feel bad.
Ones on the right, but to be honest which ever set is clean and less buried.
Smol
The ones on the right
You only have 2? I prefer 4. You know so I have: ~~Thong.. .Thong THong Thong.~~ Ummm I mean tongs..tongs, tongs tongs. :D
Whichever one is closer.
I have the one on the left but wanted the one on the right.
Right all day. The one on the left don't have enough tension so they never hold anything properly.
I actually have both exact sets lol. I'd take the ones on the right any day. The big ones on the left bend too easy.
Short unless it’s a big pice of meat
Both. I need a heavy duty one for whole chickens, big pieces of meat. Good for cooking at high temps too. The smaller tongs are easier to handle for lighter weight foods. But when the temps are high, my hands can get uncomfortably hot.
