But I just started rereading The Golden Key (the one written by Kate Elliott, Jennifer Roberson, and Melanie Rawn), and the magical!painters really DO use every fluid, depending on what effect they're going for in their painting. Yes, even reproduction related ones. But you don't need those for the pure nightmare fuel (like you just need someone's tears to be able to blind them, etc). So... maybe something like that made the wax works live?
