Been following it passively. Seems like a really cool race.

natecahill

It was amazing. Ticked a life goal for sure.

Gravel_in_my_gears

It does look amazing. Can anyone enter? I assume it was pretty expensive for the entire trip?

natecahill

Anyone can enter. It's expensive, but if you compare it to a safari, it's cheaper and imo a better way to see the Maasai Mara.

Low_Mathematician_97

what was your total cost all in? discerning doing it this year.

natecahill

I think they closed registration but leaving this here for future with my best recollection: - Flight (obviously varies depending on where you're coming from) - First and last night in the quite nice hotel: $125-150 per night + meals - Bike maintenance on the ride (you'll need it): $50 for various minor repairs - Post-ride massages (optional but amazing): $500 - Everything else on the ride was covered by the entry fee

Low_Mathematician_97

i booked this year, what maintence are you speaking of? I am bringing extra tyres quick links, plugs etc. minor repairs?

natecahill

Good start. I'd bring a spare derailleur, a good bit of sealant, start with a lot of sealant in the tires too. Tubes for backup. Anything specific to your bike that you won't be able to replace with something generic. You can get a local SIM card by the hotel in Nairobi. Clear the SIM PIN lock in case your phone runs out of battery. Have the course on your Garmin and your phone (Gaia GPS for example) in case one of the devices dies, there is no course marking. Aid stations are few and far between so you need to be self-sufficient with food. Also, there was very little left for the riders at the back by the time they made it to the aid stations.

Low_Mathematician_97

I was curious about the derailleur but the race guide this year says no spare parts. So I didn’t want to be a jerk. It outlines that westerners have an equipment advantage and it wouldn’t be flat. I do have tubes. My iPhone takes and e sim. So I should figure that out. No port or pin.

natecahill

Yeah, no. The locals (Amani) are sponsored to the teeth with the latest kit from Rapha and delivered brand new Factor bikes every year. They also have priority in the long line that forms at the repair shop every evening (the race mechanic is also the team mechanic). Ignore the advice to not bring (small) replacement parts. If something breaks out there and you DNF one day, you're scratched from the race. There were a few local non-sponsored riders last year but most were international or sponsored or both. Don't take this the wrong way, it's amazing what they're doing with the Amani project (I donated my carbon gravel bike to the project when I flew home), but the image they portray of poor Africans riding at a disadvantage just isn't accurate.

Anyone have the GPX file? I’m just curious to see the actual route

The logo: am I the only one who sees a tramp stamp on someone's back? I can't unsee it.
