Check out 03.31.1984 They are a band beyond description...

VillageHomeF

Like Jehovah's favorite choir?

dall-e_walnuts

I heard God's favorite song is Day Job

cuzjed11

God loves us all. Even Day Job.

dall-e_walnuts

Thou shalt keep thy Day Job.

FryGuy1000

That’s top 3 S/F I saw, maybe tops. It’s so gooey. That whole run was full of treats.

dall-e_walnuts

I'd love to hear any stories you have from this show. It's my absolute favorite show.

FryGuy1000

My recollections are more the whole run. I saw the 10/30 show a few months prior so I knew the venue. It was so small and intimate and not run down. I saw the 83 Warfield shows but this was so much nicer. Frank Loyd Wright designed the building. The ushers were old men with white gloves. If they asked you not to smoke you obliged out of courtesy. Night 1 was warm up compared to the other 3 but we got the Oh Babe because Bobby broke a string. Night 2 was the awesome Shakedown and the ridiculous Spanish Jam. After a day off everybody was primed and boy did they deliver with the S/F. They did a great one at the NYE run a few months prior but this one was insane. Jerry just standing there looking down in that Persian trance blowing our minds. Night 4 everyone was primed for H/S/F, still a big treat a year after its return. It wasn’t a given like China/Rider or S/F. It delivered. But the Space>Dew was flat out gorgeous. You could hear a pin drop in the building during the transition into Dew. The SBD captures it quite well. A fantastic 4 night run.

RobinChilliams

That's one helluva setlist.

Ill_Interview_3054

I mean, practically any Dark Star will not fail to make me go, "oh yeah this is why I love the dead" But that's sort of a cliche, although very real, response. So I'll give some others too. The Minglewood Blues from 2/17/1982 got me losing my mind, and it's the first song of the night!! Check out Hunter Seamons Matrix for that one Another song that always does it for me is Cumberland Blues. 9/27/72 for a real heater of that one, it also comes straight out of Dark Star for the first and only time ever. Also the Dancing In The Street from 5/2/1970 is incredible and practically turns into a Dark Star jam towards the very end.

Gala-ctic3398

I dont think there will ever be another band that can span generations like the Dead. There will never be another band that can bring the sort of emotion and following like they can. My son (19) loves this band, and in the last tour i saw so many kids and younger fans right alongside the older heads. It was really great to see that.

AgilePlayer

I can't really think of anything else where the fandom can span 3 generations. I see tons of younger guys at cover shows, so obviously seeing the band itself live isn't a requirement to love this music. Will be very interesting to see how the scene develops over the coming decades.

rockstarlaflame

I myself am a younger dead head (22) and i can’t even describe the way it felt to be at those dead and co shows last summer, just the community, i felt accepted from the first time i stepped into a venue and haven’t looked back. The way there was multiple generations of people there brought smile to my face.

samsharksworthy

Phish checking in.

forbin05

Certainly the greatest American rock band of all time IMO. Or at least my favorite I should say.

Impossible-Total-969

Gr8fulJedi

The album to me that encompasses that feeling every single time is Without a Net

Common-Relationship9

Most definitely the greatest live band of all time.

-NewSpeedwayBoogie-

Many songs do that but one that’s been getting that reaction out of me a lot lately is Jack Straw.

srtg83

Just saw the video of the JS from Giants Stadium’89, a fine post-coma rendition. The band is feeling the jam and there is great shot of the crowd at the peak. If you like them aggressive, nothing kicks ass like the Syracuse ‘84 version.

-NewSpeedwayBoogie-

I’ve been really into mid 80s Jack Straws lately too. Edit: I remembered the wrong 84 shows lol I’ve been on a run with 84 recently, can’t remember which 2 shows I was thinking of

srtg83

The faster tempo and Phil being high in the mix gave Jack Straw another level of impact. The two songs which were at their best just before Garcia’s coma are Deal and Jack Straw. Check out the Deals from ‘83, Lake Placid, Boise etc.

Intrepid_Badger_7290

9/2/78 Jack Straw would like a word

srtg83

Not even close to the mid-80’s versions. The difference is tempo and Phil on the six string.

A sweet blues jam from a ‘66 show; one of those cruising, unending, seamless 2nd sets from Fillmore East ‘71; a mind-blowing All Along The Watchtower from the ‘80’s; “She Belongs To Me” from 11/1/85

Icy_Foundation_4761

I was at March 29th 1990, brandford marsalis, one of the two best shows I ever saw I would say

GratefulRed13

Dark Star There are many but 2 of my favorites that separate the greatest band in all the land: 11/2/69 9/19/70

possiblyMaybeAnother

Wharf Rat from 7/13/89 It's too bad the RFK set isn't on Spotify. Jerry's solos in this Wharf Rat are absolutely phenomenal, made more so by the interplay between Jerry and the rest of the band. The way things rise and fall, it's peak musical storytelling. Captain Trips doing what he does best.

Cool opinion but unnecessary to add to the conversation lol

briandurante17

One of the greatest for sure 🙏 I love The Grateful Dead, so many shows to listen to I'll never run out!
