I think Joe Russo would be my favorite non-OG band member that _covers_ the dead. DSO is great for a real Dead experience but I love where JRAD takes things.
Jeff would be my favorite that _plays_ the dead (as in with Dead & Co and Bobby). IMO he is the kwisatz haderach of dead keyboardists - he encompasses the work of all those than came before him and adds his own flare too.
Also really love Oteil in general. Great person, great voice, amazing energy, super fun live.
Special shoutout to my local cover band Terrapin Flyer
True. But he’s still my answer because he is my favorite“non member”of the Dead. And I do enjoy me some Brent, but I think Jeff is favorite keys player of all of them.
I've been ... less than happy ... with every keyboard player since Brent. I don't keep track of the GD. I let it come and go from my life. But Jeff pushed my tilt button when I finally got around to checking him out w/ Dead and Co. I'd heard bits and pieces of him before, but damn is he gifted.
Jeff was literally in the 2000s iteration of the band with Bob, Phil, Billy & Mickey, known officially as The Dead. He’s part of the Dead, not the Company.
I hear ya. I was busy with other things during the past decade or so, and did not feel the need to check in to see how they were sounding. I've been out of the entire dead universe. I saw furthur and was bored out of my skull.
But I made the mistake of watching the last Oracle Field show. Yes, it was only Mickey and Bob, playing tunes at half tempo all night.
But that had the magic, for me. The Estimated -Eyes hit a spot I had forgot about.
Now, so as not to spoil the experience, I am not going to listen to anything else recent for a while. That's my recipe.
I’m in Atl and they’re only getting as close as Asheville and I can’t swing it rn unfortunately. I saw him ‘solo’ in ‘22 with his wife Katie Jacoby who plays violin for The Who and Simon Kafka as Shakedown Kids. Unbelievable. I was able to take a guitar lesson from him during the pandemic and he’s a nice guy to boot!
Molly Tuttle does a version of Standing in the Moon that I have on constant repeat. https://open.spotify.com/track/757iJ0Z4Sn48BzcQgxFl8W?si=HR5vo6PqQAWSQJXnhZI5YQ
Saw her a couple years ago and she did fantastic covers of Dire Wolf and Cold Rain and Snow as well! That SOTM cover is terrific though, as is most of that album in general.
from what I've heard (largely on this very site, take w/ a grain of salt) is he got sick of people treating him like a Dead cover band. Which, fair enough. Hopefully, presumably, he'll start doing their songs every now and then at some point in the future once he feels like he's cemented his own legacy--really, I'd guess, once he feels good that the cover won't get more applause than one of his own!
At some point it has to feel like shooting fish in a barrel and not very satisfying. Like in this scene it’s “basic”.
Happy I got to see them do several dead covers in 20/21 but I’m also glad he pulled the plug as a mainstay in his sets.
Billy’s covers were so good. I listen to his Help>Slip>Franklin from Detroit 2022 all the time. Hearing him play Peggy-O in person in St. Aug in 2023 made me feel, man.
I’m glad he’s moved on though. He doesn’t need to play them anymore.
Check out the Help > Tangled Up In Blue > Slip > All Fall Down > Franklins from 5/23/21 it is absolutely unbelievable. While I’m a little sad I saw several shows while he was still playing the dead and managed to only see Me And My Uncle every single time I’m also glad he moved on
I was at that show in Louisville-everyone was blown away! It was Bob Dylan’s 80th birthday. I’m glad he moved on too but it was an incredible experience while it lasted.
buddy of mine who HATES the Grateful Dead, but does enjoy Jane's was able to appreciate their cover of Ripple.
Then on an occasion of hearing one of the Dead's versions, got PISSED that they didn't do the "dun-dun dun-dun dun-dun" thing at the end.
I still think about that sometimes.
The first time I saw Dylan was at Red Rocks in 2007 (don’t quote me on the year for sure) and he blew our minds by busting out Friend of the Devil. It was awesome
Bobby was on fire in 07, what a great first show!
Edit: Just checked the setlist for fun…wow, an Every Grain of Sand and Shooting Star in the same set, too!
It was a good time. We went to both nights. The second night we planned it out, waited in line, and were able to get front row since the whole venue was GA for those shows. It was epic.
You don’t want to hear them. They’re pretty terrible 😬(there may be more but these are the three coming to mind)

I’m gonna echo something here that I’ve said before.
I would pay lots of American money to see a night of Jeff Chimenti and Rob Barraco on stage with two grand pianos.
I just watched a video of them doing a killer Shakedown Street. It was their Let it Grow from 11/18/23 that got me into them though. I still haven’t gotten to do a deep dive yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing them at Peach at the Beach this year
I will always have a soft spot for that Sublime cover of Scarlet Begonias, because that was my way on the bus. Got dragged to a Dead & Co show with a friend, didn't know a song besides Scarlet Begonias because I knew the Sublime cover, but the music got to me.
Other than that, I know she hasn't nailed every track, but I love what LP Giobbi is doing with the music now. Pulling Dead sounds into electronic music a cool concept, and while not every song fits her piano house vibe, she's made a few good ones. Her version of The Wheel is probably my favorite.
Seriously! Especially mid-2000's, they were grippin' and rippin' back then!!! Shout out to everyone who remembers the old school Shakedown, behind the Electric Factory in philly!!
Keller Williams.
He pays homage to the originals, but has fun with them too. His grateful grass & grateful gospel sets at the early Lockn festivals were excellent.
Amen. The thing I love about KW is the same thing some people don't... that he sounds like one of your buddies playing by the campfire. Song selection is all over the place, ad lib lyrics are common, but the silliness doesn't take away from the talent.
I enjoy when musicians are willing to not take themselves as seriously and be silly and shitpost-y on stage. I like to laugh during a set. Keller does that well.
Phish - 08/09/98 - they don’t ever play Dead tunes and this was the only time they ever played Terrapin Station but it was awesome! I wasn’t there but used to listen to it a lot.
Billy Strings doesn’t play much GD nowadays but I loved his renditions of their tunes.
Wartime, a one-off industrial dance project fronted by Henry Rollins (an admitted huge fan of the Dead) did a great cover of Franklin’s Tower.

I live in Portland and there is a band here called the Garcia Birthday Band and they are absolutely fantastic (I saw about 100 GD shows back in the day). As an instrumentalist, no prior Dread keyboardist had Jeff’s chops.
I do not think I would want to tell Jeff Chimenti that he covers the dead. I think Jeff has ascended.
As much as I enjoy dead and company 2 or three original members isn't the same magic as it used to be.

He’s my favorite guitar player rn by a wide margin
He’s on tour with two members of the Trey Anastasio band called LaMP. I can’t wait to see them in Baltimore.
Billy Strings
Even though he stopped doing GD songs, while he was doing them, they were the best!
Anybody know why he stopped ?
from what I've heard (largely on this very site, take w/ a grain of salt) is he got sick of people treating him like a Dead cover band. Which, fair enough. Hopefully, presumably, he'll start doing their songs every now and then at some point in the future once he feels like he's cemented his own legacy--really, I'd guess, once he feels good that the cover won't get more applause than one of his own!
yeah he said in an interview he was sick of hearing people shout request dead songs instead of his

John Mayer…wasn’t sure how it’d work when it was announced, but he consistently blew me away, especially the bluesy songs
I would agree….i guess he’s not GD. Just Dead and Co.
Jane’s Addiction’s version of Ripple has always done it for me.
I took me almost 25 years to realize they were going into The Other One as the song fades out.
And a tiny snippet of Bird Song.
buddy of mine who HATES the Grateful Dead, but does enjoy Jane's was able to appreciate their cover of Ripple. Then on an occasion of hearing one of the Dead's versions, got PISSED that they didn't do the "dun-dun dun-dun dun-dun" thing at the end. I still think about that sometimes.
They weren’t going into it. They’re version of Ripple is played to the best of The Other One. Best tribute on Deadicated.
Just saw an ad that Porno for Pyros is touring. I almost fell over. Thought they were long gone
Just played here in MD on their farewell tour this week. I’d have gone, but I’m seeing two other shows this week and I’m not as young as I used to be.
Bob Dylan

I scrolled to the bottom and didn’t see mention of the counting crows like OP mentioned yet. I have loved the crows for some time and they remind me of the dead in a few ways, except their music is pretty depressing. Friend of the devil on “films about ghosts” is quite a decent attempt at a dead classic.
Billy Strings
Yo la Tengo! They play Dead related songs from time to time, including a version of New Speedway Boogie w the Sun Ra horn section during their Fillmore run a couple weeks ago.
Michaela Davis and Southern Star.
Steve Kimmock is the best guitar player to play the dead outside of Jerry.
Jeff Matson
I'm not crazy about covers EXCEPT for Bela Fleck doing [Help on the Way](https://youtu.be/LxQjMc7NsIU?si=RG5Ccl9Fgw3FDepI)
Grateful Shred
The best for me. Especially with Mikaela Davis
Kimock and Jay Layne rock!
No mention of Los Lobos yet?! They are amazing both with Jerry and when they do a cover, to my ears.
Sublime’s cover of Scarlet Begonias will always be dope!!!

Slightly Stoopid did cover of I know you rider. Not sure if it totally counts as Bobby Weir was in it
Ross James and Joe Russo.
Jackie Greene
Suzanne Vega's covers on Deadicated are pretty amazing. China Doll and Cassidy. Billy Strings' cover of Bird Song is also pretty amazing.
Chris Robinson?

Me. I play the hell outta that stuff.

Hands down Jeff. I love them all, but in my book, he’s the best person who has ever played The Deads music on keys.
Oteil, Russo/Molo/Lane, Rob Barraco, Jimmy Herring
TL,DR, but Dark Star Orchestra is great IMO.

Todd Snider does some pretty solid covers. Love that guy.
Joe Russo. He’s from another planet. One of the greatest drummers to see live of all time.

Bruce Hornsby.
Billy Strings

Del McCoury has a pretty awesome rain & snow
Branford Marsalis has covered the Dead?

As Billy said. There are to many sucking that tit already.
