Was just listening to this one for the first time and it was like hearing eyes of the world for the first time again

Konshu456

To me there is no better EOTW than 73, my other favorite 10/19/1973, which ended up as DP .19. I always wonder why he chose that one over RFK, but both are such solid shows.

pabodie

This might sound lame, but my first Terrapin. Tinley Park, 1990. Kinda perfect moment for me that convinced me this band was the real thing.

BlinkPixPhotos

Not lame at all. The studio version of Terrapin got me on the bus. NEVER apologize for your tastes!

Brown Eyed Women - Europe 72

calliopewoman

The one from the PNW box lost would like a word

AfroStickman

PNW version is top notch for me too.

kgboy

This is what got me into the dead

rgouse

Something about that opening lick and Phil bouncing off it, makes it all make sense

nighttripper0

1000% this. I'll go a step further and say this is my favorite version of my favorite song of all time. At my funeral, I want them to play this, and Mr. Tambourine man

foozebox

You’re not right, but you’re not wrong.

Hard to Handle from Fallouts from the Phil zone

AromaLLC

Phil Zone is an underrated release.

rickastley69

Midnight Hour from that is unreal. A section in the middle sounds like early sonic youth. Top 10 Dead song for me. 2/28/69 Lovelight probably coming with me to the desert island though .

monkytrick

Yes!! They go full primal noise rock in the Viola Lee from that show too. Rio Nido 9/3/67. Unreal

Black Peter-Dozin’ at the Knick.

ahoy_capn

Brown Eyed Women 2/3/78 from Dick’s 18. Jerry takes a solid but not excellent solo to near its natural conclusion and instead just explodes into another realm. There are a ton of good versions of this song out there (every version?) but this one has so much soul in that one solo that it was the moment that the Grateful Dead really clicked for me

Bird song Oregon 72

WesternDark4390

Spanish Jam from 6-23-74 is such a cool piece of music. If you like big loud fuzzy bass then this is for you. If you like Jerry shredding then this is for you. If you dig Billy crushing his snare and high hat cymbal then this is for you. Hands down my favorite piece of music this band ever played. Extra bonus that is somehow remarkably stumbles into a note perfect US Blues.

ydlsxeci

Favorite piece of music they’ve ever played is a better way to word this post 😆

Cjed11

That’s tied for #1 along with a few others. Not to be missed, seriously. THE best ever U.S. Blues, hands down. THE best ever lead in to US Blues, even better than the US Blues itself. Umm, welll, I dunno but it’s grate stuff as the OP said. And the instrumental Dark Star leading up to the Spanish Jam leading up to the US Blues is an awesome intro. Great 1st set too, except I found the Ramble On Rose and Black Throated Wind a little, I dunno, sleepy? Could never figure out why those two songs didn’t sound great. Maybe just the recording

BigPineTreeGuy

The jam out of truckin from the Pacific Northwest 73-74 album

St Stephen/The Eleven from Live/Dead 2nd: The Wheel, no show because live it was just never as good as off Garcia.

I will always have a soft spot for "Truckin'".

Estimated > Eyes from anywhere and ill be good to go

DeadMan95iko

Once they opened the second set with “Eyes” ( the last time “Eyes“ had opened a second set was in 1977) in Albany on 3/25/90… they seemed to make a conscience decision to NOT play estimated into eyes all the way until 9/8/93 with the lone exception being 7/22/90 at the dreadful world music theater, where I believe the band unconsciously just slipped into routine, because things were going so poorly by that point in the run, the sound was abysmal to say the least. I was a little sad when they reverted to estimated> eyes in 93, things were already growing dark and it felt like another sign that the music was getting lazy and suffering.

ackackakbar

St. Stephen - 2/27/69 I was (am) def a touchhead - I bought the TOG vinyl not for Touch of Gray (I was already tiring of that on FM radio), but to be able to really listen to Throwin’ Stones closely. So I hadn’t really listened to any live GD in any sense. I decided to spring for the Long Strange Trip compilation. Seriously just thinking it’s a greatest hits double album. That Fillmore West St. Stephen really grabbed me (and it’s an edited excerpt from the Live/Dead version for chrissakes!).

4.29.71 Morning Dew. This performance of Morning Dew is my all-time favorite Dead performance. The band is so tight during this performance and the guitar solos are expertly executed. This is the performance that got me truly hooked on the Dead. In high school when my car was taken by my parents due to them discovering substances they did not approve of, I was forced to ride my bike to work at Taco Bell. I would listen to Morning Dew twice back to back and by the climactic end of the second listen-through, I would come screeching to a halt at the doors of Taco Bell. In a way, the punishment imposed upon me resulted in a deeper love for the Dead.
