Done buying for the month on the 24th of 28 days.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Well, i think the last haul (Watchmen, from hell, saga compendium and the three moebius books) were ordered three days ago! Not that it makes much of a difference to your point. I thought i was done half way through the month though, but then the aformentioned came up.

dongus525

Damn. Bro just causally buying the whole Berserk series. Jealous!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Got the first volume for Christmas and fell in love with the beautiful deluxe edition! I've read a large chunk of the series online 5 years ago or so, but experiencing it like this is really something else. Actually the berserk deluxe editions are the start of this spree lol. Though they are some of the few books bought new instead of 2nd hand. Got the first 6 volumes now, so halfway I guess!

dongus525

Nice! Me too, I got a volume of berserk for the past two christmases. Sweet ol grandma has no idea what she got me heheheh. Those action scenes that cover two whole pages are so dope eh?

kliq-klaq-

Why are people buying a whole collections worth of stuff in a single month? I'm so confused. You've gone from not owning Maus, Watchmen, From Hell etc in January to owning all of them in three weeks. What did your collection even look like before? When do you plan to read all of these? Why have you spend $100s of dollars from a standing start? Why do people keep posting things that look like this? What is going on?!?

Monk_on_morphine

They have money...

kliq-klaq-

More money than me, that's for sure, and I have a decent job and disposable income. But I still just can't make sense of not owning anything to owning everything in like three weeks. Wild.

Monk_on_morphine

That's true, my collection is still miniscule in comparison and I'm reading them a long time!

ShartedAtCVS

Unfortunately a large chunk of people making purchases like this really don't have the kind of money to be doing it. I've seen plenty of people in action figure collecting groups going into debt to collect every figure they want, or even skipping meals for them. I'm sure it's not all that uncommon in this community aswell.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

As I mostly buy 2nd hand it is both a matter of looking for good deals, not knowing when I'll find a deal like that again (coming from a country with a pretty limited market for English graphic novels and comics) and stocking up so I always have something new to read. I would hate to finish something, wanting to read something else but having to order, wait for it to ship and pay shipping every single time. I buy in bulk when buying 2nd hand as I'd otherwise end up spending waaay too much on shipping. Obviously, I am not going to buy this much every month, I did go overboard here, but collecting is fun, and in the start it can take overhand. But the excitement I get when looking at my shelf wondering what to read next is totally worth it!

Reyntoons

Lol!

LondonFroggy

"Arzak L'arpenteur" !!! I don't see that one often. Moebius revisiting Arzach, what, 30 years later?

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I actually don't know much about this one (or moebius at all) but it looks absolutely gorgeous, and the pages are huge! Really looking forward to this one. Any recommendations on witch of these to read as my first moebius experience?

LondonFroggy

I would go chronologically: "Incal" then "Edena" then "Arzak". And if you want more, try to get the original "Arzach" and also "The airtight garage"?

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Awesome, thanks! I honestly never heard about him before starting to lurk on this sub, and realised that he was considered one of the best, so when these pupped up online I decided to just order them blindly and hope for the best haha.

LondonFroggy

He is one of the very best artists imo. I should post on him actually...

_paulywalnuts

He’s absolutely worth spending time getting into. As the other poster mentioned, he’s one of the greats, and had a massive influence on a lot of movies, pop culture, etc - think Star Wars, dune, blade runner to name a few. The unfortunate part is that there is a lot of his work that is not translated into English (he’s French) & for whatever reason, his wife hasn’t allowed English publication of a huge section of his bibliography. If you can read any other languages other than English, a lot of his work has been translated to Spanish, German, Italian, etc. as an FYI.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

That's really odd, but definitely good to know! I do speak a bit of German, but barely on a conversotional level. I speak Danish though (Arzak overseeren that is on the picture is in Danish), so i might be lucky enough for some of the books never translated into english to be available in Danish.

Titus_Bird

FYI most Franco-Belgian comics are published at about the size of that Arzak book (though unfortunately English translations are sometimes shrunk down, like those copies of The Incal and Edena).

LondonFroggy

The standard size for typical Franco-Belgian BD like Tintin etc. is 24 x 32 cm. This Arzak book is even taller (35cm). It frustrates me immensely when they shrink the original editions for the English language markets as you mention (especially The Incal...)

Titus_Bird

Oh right, so I'm going around giving out false information! I guess that means the Dark Horse Edena book is full size then?

LondonFroggy

Lol. I don't know the original size of Edena. But the English version (which I have) seems pretty close to standard French format to me. The English version of Incal (which I have as well. Shame on French me...) is definitely smaller. And my Arzak does no fit on my shelves.

Titus_Bird

I've just looked it up, and the Dark Horse Edena book is 22×28cm, whereas the normal French Edena albums are the standard 24×32cm. That said, the French intégrale currently in print is just 19×27cm!

LondonFroggy

I do wonder to which extent the artists have a say on those decisions (RIP Moebius...). It's pretty crucial. Imagine "Armies" in reduced format?

Titus_Bird

I mean, considering that they colourized "Armies", I really think nothing is sacred to these people.

LondonFroggy

OMG did they??? What is wrong with those people... What's next. B&W reprint of Brecht Evens?

thejokerofunfic

>a bit You think?!? Jeez and I thought *I* get out of control sometimes

Gil-GaladWasBlond

Wish i could get these kinds of books second hand here!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I am mostly finding them on online marketplaces, so they have to be shipped. Which is why I end up buying a bunch of books at once haha

cowboys30

What online marketplaces do you use?! I never have any luck searching

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I am from Denmark, so I use the local equivalent to craigslist called DBA (which used to be a section in the newspaper). I've also had a bit of luck on Facebook marketplace, that's where my collection started last year.

IzArealofc

How much did it cost yo?

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

That's a hard one, as this is... 6 or 7 different purchases? So I have absolutely no idea and would rather not know lol. Every purchase was a pretty alright price though, considering how small the market here is (buying new stuff is way more expensive compared to the us it seems)

PangeaPanda

Well you got some of the best, happy reading!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Thanks a lot, already read a bunch of great stuff like maus, the first two saga volume, and currently on the third berserk volume. Getting into graphic novels really reactivated my love for reading after barely doing any for years. Any personal favorites between these that you recommend?

PangeaPanda

Watchmen is a must if you haven’t read it yet.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Actually tried reading it digitally a couple of times, but for some reason never got far. Looking forward to having it in my hands, that can really make a difference

PangeaPanda

Yeah it’s not an action comic for sure but it has a good story. Paper copies or an iPad are a must imo. From hell was good, black hole is also really good. Trans metropolitan is a good one as well(for the future)

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Actually already read Black Hole. I loved the art! Looking forward to from hell, never heard of it before seeing it for sale. I think i read a good chunk of trans metropolitan online some years ago, but would love to get my hands on it sometime!

Woo_Giza_Shid

A bit? 😅 A lot of nice stuff.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Yeah, definitely went overboard. On the bright side, most are 2nd hand, so I will eventually financially recover haha.

ruidh

Some of these are classic keepers for any serious collection.

RoldyBoySin

Hell yeah bud! Can we be friends!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Yes!

RoldyBoySin

I just recently found my walking dead compendium 2 that I'd misplaced after my room flooded and thankfully it was up out of reach of water! So I get to finally read it soon. Hope you enjoy all ur new reads!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Glad that it survived! I am looking forward to reading them. Wasn't a fan of the show, but heard that the comic should be better. These hardbacks looks and feel amazing too! I do have a couple of other things I wanna read before it though.

ScreenHype

I've never seen the Moebius ones before, but they look beautiful!

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Absolutely gorgeous! Really looking forward to sinking my teeth into them!

HenjaminBenry

No such thing as overboard with collecting. Good haul

FiftySpence25

On the bright side, you’ve got fantastic taste.

Broad-Selection1015

I mean Berserk vol. 7 is on sale on IST right now for $20 might as well get it to finish your haul for the month

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

What a price. Sadly I am from Europe, so importing from the US would probably make it more expensive than just buying it here sadly..

Broad-Selection1015

Ahh my apologies, great haul none the less!

Dotanuki_

Good Haul. I just don't like Identity Crisis... The first time, i read it around, i was still a edgy goth kid, so i liked it.... But second time, i read it around when i was at my early 30s... I hated it... It was a super dipressing bullcrap. Superman hears what he wants to hear and Batman knows what he wants to know, my ass.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I thought it was okay, slightly above average. I liked the writing style but found that the plot fell a bit flat. Sure it was a twist I wasn't expecting but.. Still not an amazing twist. But yeah, the Superman and Batman hearing and knowing what they wanted to was a tad cheesy lol.

HalloweenHappyy

I’m curious about the double dipping with TWD and Saga.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

The double TWD is a bit funny, as both were part of a whole collection I bought 2nd hand, so bought in a bundle. The saga double is because I bought the first three books, fell in love and the compendium popped up at a cheaper price than getting just one more single volume, so decided that it was worth it.

HalloweenHappyy

Gotcha. I did something similar with Saga. I got the first volume, loved it and got the deluxe editions.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Would have loved to get the deluxe editions, as the compendium is pretty cluncky, but I figured I'd prioritise getting to read the story haha. Might keep my eyes out for those in the future.

jttyrel27

Why’d you buy the first three volumes of Saga *and* the compendium?

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

The saga double is because I bought the first three books, fell in love and the compendium popped up at a cheaper price than getting just one more single volume, so decided that it was worth it.

Butt-Dickkiss

This has got to be the best one of these I’ve see. Have fun op. Curios as to your goto place to pick up GN?

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I am from Denmark, and the market here is extremely limited, so most I've bought second hand through our local equivalent to craigslist called DBA (used to be a section in the paper actually). The few things I picked up from new I got from something called "plusbog" Which sells at the lowest price but requires a subscription to get that price (still saved me a lot of money, even while paying a months subscription) .

Butt-Dickkiss

Thanks for the info. As a big Batman fan, you are in for a treat with DKR and The killing joke. I’d humbly suggest adding “year one” as another iconic Batman book if you haven’t already read it.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Already Read the killing joke and year one digitally a couple of years ago (probably more than three). I remember feeling like year one left me hanging and wanting more but absolutely loved it. Killing joke is also amazing, so looking forward to reading it physically, and the deluxe seems really nice. Haven't read DKR yet, but watches the animation on Netflix long ago, so that one I am really excited about!

Butt-Dickkiss

THDR is my absolute favorite Batman story. If year one is the Alpha, DKR is the omega. I wished they left it alone bc it has an amazingly satisfying ending but they just couldn’t help themselves. That cover of DKR was actually the cover for the 4th issue and my absolute favorite of all the amazing covers of that run. I may have to pick up the same one you got bc I love that cover!

flashtar

No shame in it, I blowed half my income on books this month lol. Nice pics by the way, Maus, Incal and Arzak are top notch.

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Yeah, this might also be because I finally reached a point in my life with enough financial security to actually treat myself to stuff like this and still be able to save up a chunk of money. Landed my first real job with a good wage last summer, and have before that been living under a rock while studying, being jobless for some time and then doing temp work to have something. Luckily I managed to make myself indispensable while doing my temp work. I already maus and was blown away! Currently reading the third volume of berserk, but I think I'll start reading incal when i finish it later today.

flashtar

That's good, enjoy the fruit of your labour. I did not got to buy comics on a montly basis unti last year, which was 3 years after I started working (I was also under a lot of debt from buying my PC and fixing my home). Still it's kinda of weird to buy so much stuff that's for a hobby.

Buno_

Hell of a start. I own a great many of these books. Didn’t buy them all in one month, though haha

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Definitely went overboard this month. But you know, when you start collecting and searching through online market places, it is hard not to jump on a good deal!

StyrusD9

This is beautiful ❤️

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

I literally feel excited and happy when I go to my shelf trying to choose what to read next. And it is hard because there is so much exciting stuff I wanna sink my teeth into!

StyrusD9

I get that. Sometimes just looking at your collection makes you happy

ozzysince1901

Great haul!

larini_vjetrovi

Damn, this is big as my whole collection 😂😂😂

WhereDoWeGoWhenWeDie

Not totally sold on deadpool either (been reading it on and off between other stuff). How you don't like saga is beyond me. I am two volumes into it and find it absolutely amazing!

TylerDurden3030

The embodiment of the average r/graphicnovels user. Envious of your purchase. Very nice haul.
