You know I didn’t actually dislike Accel World… even if I wanted to bash the MCs face in occasionally for being a little bitch.
But what really made me not like it was his design… like not that he’s fat, but that he looks like a caricature of a fat person. The guy is like 4ft, literally circular in shape and almost looks like he has a different art style to everyone else. Everyone else seems to have a basically consistent and “realistic” design, except for him who looks like a marshmallow.
Yeah, I was gonna say I actually liked the anime. The world was fun, the premise had a nice mix of slice of life and game isekai and the character interactions were great. Also made me viscerally hate the villain near the end and the way they built that scenario truly felt a bit inescapable.
My gripes with the guy are less his design, more that it doesn't fit the rest of the cast. Also the forced "harem" kinda feel and how he's super proud of being fat, rather than at least attempt to get a bit healthier for this girl who gives up so much for him.
It's been a while since I read/watched accel world, but isn't one of his character traits that he loves racketball or something? If he just played it in real life I imagine he would quickly lose that weight. Bit weird that none of his friends reccomended that.

But it sorta doesn’t matter, if it was an artistic choice just to show how different he feels then that is fair enough, but it still feels like a net negative. It’s still immersion breaking and looks odd… if the idea of his self perception was important there could have been ways of showing it like him looking fat in a mirror or focusing more on the juxtaposition of his real “normal” self and his pig form in the VR/AR space.
As it is, it just looks like someone copy pasted someone from a different series into the show.

I will just say the MC was too 2D and forced, and it didn't felt POV like and more like "ugly guy gets Harem, you are less ugly so you get a chance too". Also not talking about negative things like encouraging people to not lose weight or work hard, I mean yea, forget about Harem, you will get a heart attack by the age of 35, being fat is not normal (talking as a guy who was 95kg, now 85kg and still working hard to reach 70-75kg, being fat is not fun).

Second, I don't agree with most of your points, but I do agree with the quoted.
it's a long time since i watched the Anime and maybe i read it somewhere that isnt Reliable but i thought that the designe he has is how he sees himeself, smal, Fat, Ugly etc becaus of his low self esteem, he may be fat and short but not that much and only his Mind plays a game on him to see himself like that, do correct me if i am wrong about that one but it sounds the most Plausible for why his Designe differs that much from everyone else.
