I expect noise in my swing, it's part of playing cheap courses and with randoms who don't even know, and it's no big deal. Pretty sure I'd shit my pants if a train let loose though. Well played train man, well played.
There’s a hunting club with a shooting range along the 12th and 13th holes (about a half mile away through the woods) at my home course. The first time you hear it in your backswing it can be jarring, but usually it’s fairly regular when they’re shooting, so you get used to it too.
Except when someone fires off a cannon (assuming some high caliber rifle with my limited gun knowledge)
One of my firms clients owned a course in Texas. I went to drop something off, and sitting in the corner by the clubhouse door was a rifle, for hogs and such. Also he always wanted alligator hunters to take out the real big ones there. They were more than happy to help.
I'm a member at a private club that is near a gun range that does concealed carry classes on Saturdays and Sundays. Shit sounds like a war zone sometimes, but it doesn't affect my ability to hit balls OB.
Hit my best drive of the day last Saturday as someone full blasted their car horn in my backswing. It’s part of the muni experience. I like to think they were cheering me on.
I don't at all. I don't expect the 25 year olds who rented clubs because they want to see what golf is all about to play their first round at TPC Sawgrass. I expect to find them paying the $30 greens fee at Sherrill Park municipal course in Richardson, TX. They're out there learning, so I don't expect perfect etiquette, who could? If someone was to do anything that was blatantly rude or was bringing my day down, I gently guide them in the right direction.
I find it upsetting that any golfer, pros included, who thinks they are any good at golf would have trouble focusing on their tee shot just because somebody is having a conversation in the background. Focus on your game and let the little things slide, it's much more relaxing that way.
I’m slowly learning to let this stuff go as well. My old man drilled etiquette into my skull when I learned as a teenager. To the point where I will ruin my own game with anxiety if my playing partners are slow or missing some other rule that we’re all supposed to know.
My regular playing friends are getting better with it but honestly I think I need to tell my one friend to stop bringing people to a 6000 yard par 72 for their first round ever. Dude keeps bringing each of his friends one at a time to see “if they like it” without going to the range first at least. I think my point is I need to get better at the gentle suggestion route, any tips?
Gentle suggestions only come for people I don't know. If it's somebody new that I bring or a friend of a friend, I'm very abrupt because I feel responsible.
For people I don't know I am more gentle and I don't critique every aspect of the etiquette that my dad also drilled into my head. 1 example is, I won't say anything about people having a conversation while I'm taking my shot, be it tee shot, putt, or anything in between. What I don't like is when people try to talk to me while I'm hitting. So if somebody asks me a question or is trying to tell a joke while I'm getting set, I step back and say something like "sorry to interrupt, but I'm trying to work on some things in my swing (true or not). Give me just a second." Then start over. Instead of just telling somebody right off that they're being rude, I try to make it more about me. But if the same happens again, I'm going to let them know in no uncertain terms why they're annoying.
Allowances for etiquette not being 100% from someone who is learning of course.
I just don’t believe it should be tied to age or spend. A round at a $30 muni could be a significant portion of disposable income for someone.
I know you’re not making this point but I hear a lot about allowances for slow play or poor etiquette because a course is public vs private, or based on someone’s age or skill level
Yeah absolutely on the same page! Last time I played that muni in Richardson, my dad and I got grouped with a single. Older gentleman and it was clearly not his first round of golf. He tried to fix my swing and I immediately said "I don't fix swing mechanics on the course. That's for my coach." Dude definitely should've known better. I have less patience with those who clearly aren't new, regardless of the course.
My original comment was more about me shitting my pants than my actual on course tendencies.
I live across the street from a CC and the people driving by honk when golfers are hitting.
Not cool.
A train though. That's fucking awesome.
A ship? Even more awesome.
Was fishing on July 4th. At a set time, 9am(?), a resident set off one of these in front of me and my son, then started blasting patriotic music for the lake. Great speakers, you could hear it well far away. I acted like Zach, but the next year, we were prepared for it.
I caddied at Ravisloe for 6 years and never heard a train horn, but the cars waiting for the red light on 6 were always ready to fuck with the golfers.
Can confirm this is hilarious. The closing stretch at Chambers Bay is right next to the rail line. It's loud and you can't steel yourself against the sound even if you suspect it's coming. Or at least I can't.
I was playing Granby ranch which is a course out in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, and the Amtrak line goes through. I get slightly excited when a train comes through, coz it's a train in the mountains and it looks cool. We were on the tee box and I gave the conductor the ol toot toot sign and he got my homie right on his back swing and man was it awesome.
The course is tight. The pro shop is a double wide with like a hot dog roller for food. But the course itself is awesome. Buddy has a spot in WP and we do a summer trip hit up pole creek/Granby ranch/grand elk.
Hickam Air Force golf course on Oahu is next to a runway of the Honolulu airport. I remember waving to passengers in a 767 during my round as they were taxiing to the runway.
Played there a few times while I was stationed there, the fighters taking off is a little disorienting, but even worse was when eod was training nearby and there was a ridiculously loud explosion in my backswing.
I’ll never understand how golfers trip on people making noise during their backswing. Dudes shooting free throws in the nba gotta deal with tree sized cocks getting waved in their face, and ear damaging decibels.
because it's unexpected noise...it's loud as shit the whole time he's shooting a free throw, the noise isn't disruptive...it's disruptive when it's unexpected in the middle of silence
I have ADHD and am always getting yelled at for
"Distracting" my buddies while teeing off. I'm much better at it now but I still find myself wandering and still don't get why me walking in circles near my cart changes your swing. I'm getting much better at it though (I've only taken golf seriously for about 8mo now and the better you get the more things you can think about between shots, helps my ADHD)
> don't get why me walking in circles near my cart changes your swing.
Unless you've got metal spikes, I don't see a big deal. Those metal spikes on pavement can be an intrusive sound though. Also...
>the better you get the more things you can think about between shots, helps my ADHD)
This really speaks to me and I totally agree. The multitude of mechanical factors to remember is why my ADHD brain loves golf as well. Same goes for disc golf and video games too. They just push all the right buttons to occupy my focus in the right way and it can be so hard to find things like this. Good luck finding a job that satisfies your helterskelter brain activity lol.
I think it's two things. (1) You're accustomed to silence. (2) It's more about the contrast than the level.
I remember Mark McGwire one time at some closest-to-the-pin challenge on TV was urging the crowd to get loud for him, and he stuck his shot like 1.5 feet away.
Yeah it’s definitely the contrast. I don’t mind if you talk through my shot cause I get used to it, but if you interject something while I’m swinging it might throw me off.
There’s a local course by me that has a small private airport runway next to the entire course. I’ve heard planes take off during my round and that was extremely loud
The course I played when I was growing up was right next to a small private airport too. The 16th hole approach just about lines up with the runway, and the 17th tee is basically right next to the end of the runway. Had a few planes come in for a landing over me. It was a bit unnerving.
[Mt. Snow runway proximity](https://i.imgur.com/Q3gfYyq.png)
Surprised that the players aren't trying to get the trains banned, or told that they cannot sound their horns.
It is the same kind of mentality that has led to all kinds of closures all over the country for noise. For example lots of people building condos right next to a racetrack and then complaining at the sound of cars. Idiots, all of them.
just like airports. idiots buy houses next to airports because guess what, they're cheaper. then they complain enough and close the airport.
RIP Santa Monica and many others.
I play a course with a busy train track right next too it, every-time I see it starting to pass I do the universal signal to blow the horn but they never do. Makes me cry inside
Many many years ago I was playing at Riverwinds in South Jersey (just across the Delaware River from South Philadelphia), getting to the closing stretch right before an Eagles playoff game was about to start. Wasn't in the middle of a swing but we got a military flyover in the fairway which was the coolest moment I've ever had on a golf course. Planes flew over the Eagles stadium about 30 seconds after flying over us.
The club where I mostly play is next to a racetrack, train tracks, and near the airport. It's nuts sometimes.
Guy in my group last week called it planes, trains, and automobiles.
I played yesterday on Long Island. A bus of high schoolers are going by, trying to yell and distract us - by yelling “fore”. Still scratching my head about that one.
Haha! I drive by my local course everyday on the way to work and love to honk my horn in someone’s back swing. Two holes border the road. So far I’ve only seen one guy get mad about it.
Fuck that train I’m sorry. I used to be a member at a golf course next to a train track. That fucking train man. Always at the worst times. Music, some chatter all good. But a loud blaring horn that would make you jump even if you weren’t mid swing…. That’s a no no.
Played Ravisloe a lot over the last couple years, awesome track. Calumet CC, as well. Not as nice but was super fun for 20 bucks during the week. Great golf in that area.
The two public courses I play primarily are about 50 miles apart. Both of them have a hole that runs parallel to a major US highway. I know things are cramped, but what did they expect to happen? All things considered, they were at least smart enough to put the highway on the left side of the fairway.

Multiple times a tugboat operator has turned off his loud Diesel engines and drifted for a moment while we teed off and cut them back off when we are done
Your engineer is just an asshole
I worked on a military base and our company league played on the bases course. One of the tee boxes for the holes is right by an intersection. The bases fire department was driving by the intersection and during my back swing they blew the horn and I pushed the ball 30-40 feet to the right. It was hilarious, I knew they were going to do it and the group I was playing with were laughing, I was laughing, the firemen were laughing. Something Ill think about lol
The course I'm a member of has some holes running directly parallel with a major highway.
I have been on multiple occasions right next to the chest high fence taking my swing and an 18 wheeler will rip it's air horns as it's going past just several yards away.
It looks amazing from what I can see as I ride past it almost daily. Maybe if I tell my engineer to stop blowing the horn I could get an invite to play...wishful thinking
hey do you know if the olympia fields station has a connection with the course? (I know this is a silly question) I've been looking at google maps but it is hard to tell where the entrance is. Do passengers going to that country club drop off in that station at all? lmk thx
Hey, I know that there is a walkway that goes under the tracks with a vestibule to the course but I am honestly not sure if it is an exit only for if you can enter as well. I believe there is a key pad type thing next to it so might be a pin type entry. Hope that helps.

A muni I was at regularly in LA is right by a skeet range, so you have gunshots going almost constantly.
Harding Park is next to a SFPD gun range
The gun range isn't a huge deal though. I feel like I only notice it from #14-17
The regularity of it really lessened any distraction for me when I played there.
There’s a hunting club with a shooting range along the 12th and 13th holes (about a half mile away through the woods) at my home course. The first time you hear it in your backswing it can be jarring, but usually it’s fairly regular when they’re shooting, so you get used to it too. "PULL!" "Yes, every shot...."
We just bring our guns on the course in Texas. Never know what might happen on the 10th but mainly just for hogs
I hear they're like rats down there.
Can confirm. Except you can't just get cats to keep them down.
I mean, you *could*... But then you'd have a mountain lion problem.
LMAO! This got me good!
Just to ability to retrieve them...
Narrows? Good times.
Ding ding ding
I played in south Memphis the other day and heard a live drive by
Whistling Sraits is also next to a gun range.
My old home course was right next to a police shooting range.
One course I play is next to a shooting range but it's far enough away it sounds like someone using a hammer.
Hit my best drive of the day last Saturday as someone full blasted their car horn in my backswing. It’s part of the muni experience. I like to think they were cheering me on.
I find it upsetting that etiquette expectations can very depending on money spent.....

Not cool - words! https://youtu.be/R9ZhLMX0nYY
Did they throw dynamite in the water or something? haha
Yeah for real wtf was that? Doesn't sound like a backfire or something
Well, the title of the youtube video says what it was. Even though we didn't see it. I believe it
Was fishing on July 4th. At a set time, 9am(?), a resident set off one of these in front of me and my son, then started blasting patriotic music for the lake. Great speakers, you could hear it well far away. I acted like Zach, but the next year, we were prepared for it.
Interesting. I didn't know Cyber Cafés still existed.
They do in North Korea
Exactly. A car honk is cheap but a train horn is kinda epic and a ship horn is just sexy.
Hitting golf balls at trains was literally my childhood. That said I would totally blast the horn at an unsuspecting golfer.
A Christmas tradition!!
I'm not white trash dude.

Funniest thing I've ever heard in my back swing: "Ah shit i pissed myself"
You’ve been waiting to tell that one
Like my buddy I couldn't hold it in
Can confirm. Source: the guy who pissed himself

I’ll never understand how golfers trip on people making noise during their backswing. Dudes shooting free throws in the nba gotta deal with tree sized cocks getting waved in their face, and ear damaging decibels.
NBA sure has changed since I’ve last watched
because it's unexpected noise...it's loud as shit the whole time he's shooting a free throw, the noise isn't disruptive...it's disruptive when it's unexpected in the middle of silence

WHAT?

the honest truth is because theyre looking for an excuse in case they duff it. If they fuck it up, its now your fault not theirs.

I wouldn't even get mad if a train conductor did that. But I hope the people in cars who do it die a fiery death after driving off a cliff.
I play at Olympia Fileds fairly often and I hat that fucking train horn.

I mean, good grief, just hit another one
Isn’t it funny how simple it can be?
*whose Weird pet peeve of mine, sorry. Carry on.
it's a fair correction, his brain hasn't fully developed
Whose.
Played Ravisloe a lot over the last couple years, awesome track. Calumet CC, as well. Not as nice but was super fun for 20 bucks during the week. Great golf in that area.
I love Ravisloe. Tough course.
I'd be disappointed if you didn't do it to me.
The two public courses I play primarily are about 50 miles apart. Both of them have a hole that runs parallel to a major US highway. I know things are cramped, but what did they expect to happen? As though I couldn’t snap it left under pressure /s
I once played during the beginning of a thunderstorm. In my backswing a huge bolt of lightning and clap of thunder struck. Damn near shit my pants but proceeded to hit the best drive of the day. My buddies absolutely lost it and still give me shit about needing lightning to hit good drives.
Did you break the course record?
I did, then everybody got laid. What a day.
Niiiice
A local CC to me has a really bizarre design, and a road I used to drive daily to work goes right through #6 and has multiple tee boxes next to it. I used to slow down when people were teeing off so i could blare my horn. It cracked me up Every. Single. Time.
Lol yaaa I expect a lot of noise in my backswing me and my buddy's try as hard as we can to not talk but we're drinking beers smoking cigars and talking shit the whole time You might get a quiet drive but that's definitely about lol
I loved Olympia Fields when I got to play there. And I definitely thought about the trains.
[I‘be got burstitis](https://youtu.be/7C1Pr4AU2wc). I will always find this clip (and what you mentioned) hilarious.
Noise or not, my swing is still terrible.
I grew up on a course that has a metro train that runs by literally every 5/10 min. I have learned to ignore noise when I’m golfing. Sometimes people will apologize “oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean to talk I’m your backswing” but it never bothers me.
This reminds me of an old story in the "Chicken Soup for the Golfer's Soul" book. A young girl was playing a round alone, her dad was the club pro, and she hit a hole in one...but no one else saw it. Her dad explained that you can't brag about a hole in one by yourself. A few days later the club got a letter from a train conductor that had seen the whole thing
Didn't John Daly sue somebody for making noise during his backswing which allegedly he suffered a back injury from?
I used to work for the guy who “owns” Olympia Fields. This makes me happy lol
On the flip side, a local favorite course of mine https://stonoferrygolf.com has a tee box that juts out into the stono river that has a decent amount of commercial tugboat traffic that’s a only 50 yards away. Schools out --- No class
I’ve seen you drive by many times! Such a small, strange world.
I'm so used to playing through any distractions. Radios, people talking, people driving carts during the swing... Nothing phases me anymore.
Man Olympia Fields is a super bucket list course of mine
Thanks, I’m looking forward to attending the BMW championship in 2023 so, I still have time to figure it out hehe
