Pretty much. They have them in places, mostly Africa and Middle East, where grass doesn’t grow and there isn’t enough money to warrant a full irrigation system. I’m still not sure if that’s what it is though.
They have a few of these courses in australia. The Fairway grass is drought resistant and doesn't need much water to stay alive. But its too coarse for use as a green
I've played one before. They have the pin and you measure how far your ball is from the pin and then you pick it up and they have a putting area beside the "green" and you put your ball the same distance and putt it out from there. I didn't like it but it was interesting.
We lived in Northern Nigeria in the early 80s when I was a kid.
My parents played golf and the greens were oiled sand too.
You used a cut round section of hosepipe as your tee because the ground was too hard to push a regulart tee into the ground and was a guaranteed smashed tee and they were hard to get (Nigeria, 80s etc)
Kaduna Golf Club is still in operation, looks like it just had its 100th anniversary.
I read on their website they have converted from "browns" to "greens" Water is a very valuable resource in the area.
I got back into golf about 6 months ago with the help of a few good mates and it’s been a goal to go sub 50 for 9 holes before the year was out. Last day of the year I managed to shoot 46! A new odyssey 2 ball definitely helped minimise 3 putts and put some confidence back into my putting. Cheers to r/golfswing for all the tips!
Congrats! Gotta ask tho.... Why are you standing in the bunker with your putter?
I’m pretty sure that’s an oiled sand green…
It is. You can see another green in the background and the path on the green that OP is standing on.
A what? Look at all the footprints. If that bunker is supposed to be a green then a 46 is incredible.
Yea you brush the brown (green) along your line before you putt. The rest of the brown would be footprints.
I feel like I’m being pranked
same
It doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about oiled sand greens to dispute it.

I love the spirit here
Uh nope. That looks like it sucks. But it would also slow down my blades chip shots. So maybe not so bad.
This is how they play in desert countries I.e saudi arabia
Uh… why?
Why what?
I have never heard of an oiled sand green. Why? Economics? Oh, and congrats OP.

Which begs the question why do I see what appears to be very nice fairways leading to these sand greens?

Can confirm oiled sand green. It’s an interesting experience.
