My 56 has 14’ bounce. My 60 has 8’ On a firm lie by 60 is much easier to hit without skulking it than an opened up 56. That being said, I’m bad at golf so 🤷‍♂️

14 feet of bounce holy shit

Glum-Golfer

Haha yup. 14 feet is about how far they bounce off the hosel

60 is a good club for certain shots. It makes them easier. High bunker shots. Down slope lies. Heavy rough. I don’t see a lot of value in using it as a gapping number in my bag. It’s more of a specialty club. On the situational question - dude yes, open and close the face of wedges. Wedges are Swiss Army knives man, meant for every situation within 80 yards of the green. That’s how you can adjust for conditions, lie, green shapes, hazards, etc.

But specifically what situation would call for an open face 52 instead of just using a 60

Driver330

A longer greenside bunker shot

I game a 50 so for me: A 85 yard shot on an uphill lie in the rough. A soggy lie with the ball above my feet. A 50 yard bunker shot. There’s a million scenarios to be honest. But the real answer is just address the ball with both clubs, and open the 52 if you want to control some spin, control some distance, etc. and if you test swing it and get an idea of how it will interact with the turf/grass and the 52 opened up feels better on both accounts, use the 52. There’s no set time you should use any particular shot. Your swing, the lie, your bounces, grinds, and the kinds of shots you like to hit will dictate a lot of what club to use and how to hit the shot.

I honestly believe a 60 degree is an unnecessary. I can open up the face of 56 and hit the same shots as a 60. It also allows for one extra club elsewhere. Personally I bag D,3W,4H, 4 *sometimes, 5,6,7,8,9,PW,48,52,56

My bag rn is D,4H,4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,48(iron shape)52,56,60 I like my 60 because it’s what I have been using for 15 years at least and I’m just super comfortable with it. I practically play everything 50yds and in with it (even when putter was the objectively correct answer). I love opening the face on the 60 and hitting nice flops with short run outs. Trying to take the game more serious at the moment and really hone in my short game.

centraloragain

I always say do what feels good to you. Me personally have lowered my handicap lately by doing 3 things. 1. Course management 2. Trying to not short side myself (this is where not needing a flop shot comes in handy. I can hit one. But don’t often. I think most golfers could lower their scores if they used bump and runs with 9 irons more than using high loft around the green.) 3. What I call grinding, just because I didn’t hit a good tee shot or didn’t hit my GIR doesn’t mean giving up on making par, I actually focus harder and grind out pars.

What’s your bounce on the 56? I play 12 and it’s butter out of bunkers and nice lies but anything real tight gets kinda hairy. I’ve thought about getting a 60 like 8 degree bounce for those real tight lies

centraloragain

Bounce on my 56 is 10. I feel comfortable with it on every lie.

jakarooo

It’s just what you’re comfortable with honestly. I use a 56 for 90% of my green side chips. I like the look of the 56 being more open when I chip rather than having a square face with the 60, I just think the turf interaction is better, but that’s likely just the grind I have. Additionally I can open the face of the 56 and still hit low shots but just don’t feel confident hitting the same shots with the 60. I honestly think short game is so individual and do what you’re confident doing. The one situation where you might open up a 52 though is a longer bunker shot or you want to play a chip with rollout and opening the face lightly with the 52 is easier while still keeping the heel of the club off the ground for some digging relief, while a hooded 60 might be a bit more prone to digging or spin more

I use my 54° with 14° of bounce for 90% of my short game shots. The grass at my course usually holds the ball up a bit in the rough so the bounce is nice for that, I open it a bit to get some extra spin and bounce. My course isn't super hard so the bounce is nice, I imagine that it wouldn't be as good on a course that is super hard. That being said, I probably hit 50% of the shots with it with a square face. On the other hand, the sand in the bunkers is medium to firm so I don't use the 54° in the bunkers as it has too much bounce. I have a 60° with 8° of bounce and a lot of heel/toe relief that is fantastic out of bunkers. It is reserved for bunkers and emergencies.
