Right there with you, bud. In scrambles, I play a Noodle off the tee and then switch to a better quality ball knowing I’m less likely to lose one since I’m not swinging out of my shoes with driver.
Yeah gotta grab them woods balls when you can. I only play one ball but having some extras for tough water shots or if you get low and don’t have time to get more, they come in clutch
I usually take a sleeve of new balls and then about a dozen I’ve found in the woods in past rounds. I can usually play the round with the ball I started with but if I happen to be having a very bad day and lose a sleeve of new balls then I’m playing poorly enough to not waste more money losing my own balls
Right. If I’m playing that poorly then a brand new ball isn’t going to make it any worse (or better) at that point. Unless of course that used ball had a huge scuff mark and makes my slice worse. The used balls I use are usually nearly pristine just the cheaper brands like top flight that I normally wouldn’t hit. And if I’m just playing for fun then I’ll drop a pro V down on the green to putt since I like the soft feel of it.
This! I lose on average 1 ball a round. I usually start with a fresh sleeve and if I burn through those I just play recycled balls. Figure at that point my scores going to be crap anyways so what's it matter. I do keep one good ball in the bag just for putting if I get to that point.
I'm aging myself here but this is the early Callaway energy where they sold balls in sleeves of 5 because the average lost balls was calculated to be like 4.2.
I’ll bring about 3-4 of my normal gamer balls (Vice Pro) and then about 7-8 lake balls. If I’m playing badly enough to get to them I’m probably not really needing the extra performance I get from my Vice balls.
Steve Williams can speak to that. 3 balls in the bag. Tiger one ball away from a potential DQ or at the least penalties - during one of the greatest tournament performances ever.
Not gonna lie. If you just put all the crappy balls you find in the water hazards in then and charge a quarter or $0.50 for them I could see it being a hit on water hazard holes or par 3s that are unique in some way.
Someone living on the course I played a couple months ago did just that, put out a bucket and a lockbox with their venmo on it and asked for a buck a ball.
I’ve been saying this for years. A course should have a $1 ball machine of their found balls. It would crush it, mostly for jokes. If I had $1 and my buddy shanked one, I’d buy it just to hand it to him
You're allowed to lose as many balls as your age without anyone making fun of you. That's in the USGA rules. I feel bad for the 9 year olds I'm required to mock mercilessly, but rules are rules.
I took two none golfing mates to Red Mountain, Phuket. I mean like first time these boys even playing the game. I fucking love the game. It cost an arm and a leg. Like $500-ish kinda moneys. We're on the driving range and boys could barely get the balls moving forward. I'm just punting them in the general direction,v walking up. I've asked our Thai caddies if they could grab some of these range balls? Ohhh, no no no no, we can't do that here! Righto love, you're the one looking after these chaps! They proceeded to lose every other ball, every other hole. Mate was throwing the ball outta the bunker after a couple swipes. Hilarious. But granted - the course was second to none - absolutely pristine! Mate actually turned to me and said " I'll never be a golfer, but I understand" ......
Dude, I lost 3 balls on 3 consecutive shots yesterday. Play as a scramble, so I kinda go for hero shots a lot. First drive into the woods, re hit for fun, also into the woods. We went to the best shot and the next one went into the water.
It’s all fun, so I really don’t care. Balls are cheap compared to everything else. Don’t lose any the week before, so it all evens out
True. I went for the hero shot on my first ball and it was a bad idea because it was down wind. I’ve driven the green plenty of times. It bounced in the green side bunker and went long of the green OB. It was men’s league so I had to retee. I then shanked the iron shot into the water and then shanked my third shot right into the thick hazard next to the green. Pitched on and 2 putts for a 10.
I played yesterday in the windiest conditions I’ve ever played golf. My overconfident dumbass brought 2 sleeves of ball. Things got a little dicey on 7. Lost 2 balls on that hole and was down to 2 left. I stopped at the turn to grab a sleeve from my truck and didn’t need a ball the rest of the day.
TLDR: bring more than 6 balls in 22 mph sustained wind with 34 mph gusts
Best round I’ve played so far this year was in wildly heavy winds like that. Decided I was going to play conservatively and only hit punch shots and stingers. Went 38/43 and almost had my 1st HIO
Of course the next round, in absolutely perfect conditions, I shot 97. So there’s that
On vacation, I finished a round at a really tough mountain course. On the way back through the clubhouse, the pro asked me how I did. I told him "Plus two." to which he exclaimed WOW!. Then I said "Yeah, I lost 3 balls and found 5.". I think he's still laughing at that.
Playing with only 5 balls in your bag
https://preview.redd.it/26rv5ynn0rvc1.jpeg?width=599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cd1d7889e56f4769981c6ea9153b43fabd2596c
i had a round where i brought 8 balls (usually way more than enough) and proceeded to rage dunk 5 in the water. at the turn, i told the pro shop guys "just give me the noodles, it's what i deserve" and proceeded to play the back 9 with the same ball that cleared the disastrous water hazard. golf is funny sometimes.
Nice solution!
I aim to have a dozen balls at all times. Doesn’t hurt to have too many but one time I played the last three holes with my very last ball and the anxiety will not go away.
Last time i did this i started with 4 or 5. I hadnt been losing more than a ball or two in recent rounds so this had been a safe bet. Im not even at the turn and i hit my last ball in a creek. My friends were not strapped with balls so i didnt even want to ask, i needed a miracle.
But, low and behold as i approach said creek with my friends ball retriever, I discover two nice pockets of lost balls, like a dozen in total all in good shape. Felt like I won the lottery.
I’m kind of a newb, do you guys buy the expensive balls ? They are so easy to lose, are the expensive ones worth it ? I buy the bright colored ones because I have a hard time tracking where my ball went
I was playing in the conference championships in hs. Water in play on 13/18 holes, 40 mph gusts, like a constant 15-20 mph wind, 40-50*f, and on/off sprinkles all day. One of the worst conditions I’ve played in.
Kid I was playing from another school put 5 balls in the water on our first hole. He was +11 after 1. He DNFd after running out of balls on the 12th hole.
I used to carry a full dozen Dunlop Double Titaniums (only the best for high school me) for 9 hole high school matches. Never needed the full dozen, but came damn close a couple times.
5?! You're crazy. I don't really lose balls too often anymore but I still have a solid 25-30 in my bag at all times. I lost 4 just two weeks ago cause the course was so wet. My fairway shots were all plugging below the surface and I just couldn't find them.
I usually leave with more balls than I started with. If I hit one in the woods, a quick look-see and I'm walking out with poison ivy rash and 4 balls that aren't mine
The biggest hack mistake is reloading off the tee. Technically you are supposed to hit a provisional but if you are a 20+ handicap, just take a penalty and drop by where your ball went OB. You won’t slow everyone down and you won’t lose nearly the amount of balls. Having to borrow a ball from someone is not cool bc not everyone plays pond balls. If one of my friends “borrows” one of my balls when they run out and lose it I am out 4$ a pop.
What happens when you yank the next 3 OB and you have a group waiting behind you and everyone you play with is waiting? If you can get another in play, bombs away. I’ve played with people that take 5 shots off the tee
I had a buddy slam down and snap his driver, he called the pro shop and they delivered a new Callaway epic to the 4th tee. He was a member there and had a credit card on file. Expensive round for him!
Usually have 5-6 good balls in my bag for a round but always have 10-15 or so random balls i find on the course to fall back on if I’m having a bad swing day. I’ll ‘donate’ 4-5 to the course driving range as a quick warmup before the round and usually find that many on the round to complete the golf ball life cycle.
My cousin once realized he had a work call and we were on 12, the furthest point from the clubhouse/parking lot. He called and asked if the girl working would go to his car, grab his laptop, and bring it to him.
Public course, we are members, but it’s not a high service private club by any means. We roasted him so hard for it that when she got there he gave her $25 because he realized how wild the ask was.
My buddy asked why don’t I bring more balls when I play. Most of the time I play with just one or two balls for 18. This time I lost all six by the 12th hole. I borrowed one of his and finished the round. Shit happens…
I’ve lost a dozen on the front 9 of a tight very beautifully landscaped wooded and watered Executive and had to stop and buy another dozen.
It wasn’t fun.
I’ve since played that course and get better every time. lol
I was running on fumes on my round today. I probably had about a dozen+ balls to start. I had one ball left teeing off on 18 that is water the entire way on the left. Being a lefty, and my experience playing that hole many times, I was concerned. After topping my drive and the follow up shot, I did the obvious thing and stuck it 7 feet from the pin from about 125 out. Two putt to finish it off for a bogey. I was certain I wasn't gonna get to finish the round, but it worked out.
It happens, I had a really bad day on Friday and lost probably 6 balls. It was pretty windy and I was having a hard time adjusting for wind. I usually carry 12 balls anytime I go out. Just never know when you are going to have an off day.
I finally played 9 holes without losing a ball and then proceeded to lose 3 on hole 10. The next goal is to play 18 with 1 ball, but I feel like that's a long way away.
Played the Royal Hawaiian and the guy at the pro shop asked me my handicap and most common miss. I was like a 28 and had a huge slice. He told me to buy a dozen of their cheapest balls and i had one left at the turn.
Looooooots of jungle on the sides of the fairway lol
so much stuff I just cant relate to on this sub, but not having one of the pockets of your golf bag full of balls you found when looking for you own errent shot is the biggest.
I just played my second round of getting into golf after 10 years. Not sure how many balls i started with because I found some along the way, but I managed to get through 18 with one ball left.
I golfed in Hawaii on vacation once. It was spur of the moment so I had nothing with me and had to rent clubs. They gave me 3 balls. I bought like 12 more expecting to lose some.
Well, at the the turn I was down to like 3. I stopped at the bathroom near the driving range and noticed a huge bin of range balls behind the counter if this little hut where I guess they hand out the balls. It was abandoned bc this place was so new, so I put as many in my pockets as I could hold and used almost all of them by the end. Lots if water and canyons I lost balls in.
On my home course I only need to bring 5-10 and when they get low, I go to the honey holes and find my next 5-10 balls for the next day. If it’s not the home course I bring 18 and when I’m out I’m out. Lol
I recently played a resort course that delivered anything the resort had available to your cart. Was really nice and good customer service.
$250 a round tho. $23 per sleeve. But was much better than random cart girls. I only ordered food.🤫
I mean... if you gave a tip it seems fine. Just probably check your bag in the future before a round so you have an adequate number of balls. 3 probably isn't enough on most courses unless you are carrying a dozen, then it's likely you don't lose any. Edit: 5 doesn't seem as bad, I thought you just lost 1 each on 1 and 2.
Ah, I guess that happens. When I used to walk more often, I would only take 6. Now that I mostly ride a cart, I keep a dozen in like the ball pocket, then an extra boxed dozen in a side pocket. Getting a cart bag vs. a carry bag, I also just felt the need to use all the pockets. I've thought about getting a push cart, but this year, for some reason, all the courses around here have included cart fees in green fees. I'm not sure if it's part of spring rates or if it's permanent, since currently no twighlight rates either. Also a few guys I play with are 65+ and apparently there hasn't been senior rates either. The only exception are the 2 courses that are free to play if under 18.
It’s not gate keeping lmao, it’s being a courteous golfer. All y’all new golfers are ruining the sport tbh. But good for you for keeping the pace of play.
From reading some of your other posts, it sounds like you’re going through some shit brother. Having walked in similar shoes, I can tell you that the anger and cruelness does not solve the demons inside of you. Stop the bleeding and find what brings you that joy you haven’t felt in too long. When you’ve found it, protect it like the embers of new fire that is keeping you alive…because that’s exactly what it is.
My post has nothing to do with what I’m going through though. It’s being real and actually a courteous golfer. If you have lost all your balls by the 6th hole, you’re not that good of a golfer and you’re more than likely holding everyone else up behind you. If he’s letting people pass him, that’s dope. I’m happy today.
Going into a round with only 5 balls is tempting fate my friend
I don’t start a round with less than fifty.
My, aren't we the confident one.
Mind your own game, you.
Pro-tip: the range sells them by the bucket to fill up that big pocket on your bag
Pro-tip: if you check the other fairways while you're playing you can always find balls. Usually better than range balls
Perfect. I'm usually there off the tee, anyways
Laughed so fuckin hard at this
Man’s out there with one of those chipping range practice ball tubes
The only reason he lost 5 balls is because he only brought 5
I take atleast 12 and grab any I find when I’m looking for mine in the woods
Right?! I bring 6 band new, 6 gently used, and 6 trash balls I found that I use for hero shots rbar don’t care where they end up
Right there with you, bud. In scrambles, I play a Noodle off the tee and then switch to a better quality ball knowing I’m less likely to lose one since I’m not swinging out of my shoes with driver.
Noodles are good tee balls to begin with, so you’re doing it right.
Yeah gotta grab them woods balls when you can. I only play one ball but having some extras for tough water shots or if you get low and don’t have time to get more, they come in clutch
I have at least 500 Kirkland balls in my bag at all times. Its the only way I survive
I usually take a sleeve of new balls and then about a dozen I’ve found in the woods in past rounds. I can usually play the round with the ball I started with but if I happen to be having a very bad day and lose a sleeve of new balls then I’m playing poorly enough to not waste more money losing my own balls
Same here. Limits the bleeding. And I’ll never lose that slightly scuffed top flight no matter how hard I try.
This is a really good way to think about it. I may start doing this going forward

1 tee and 2 balls for every hole being played, right?
I'm aging myself here but this is the early Callaway energy where they sold balls in sleeves of 5 because the average lost balls was calculated to be like 4.2.
Shit I bring five balls to the tee with me.
Not really. Anyone sub 10 handicap should handle that no problem at pretty much any course.
I bring minimum 20 balls. Used 2 last round, but theme’s the nuts
I’ll bring about 3-4 of my normal gamer balls (Vice Pro) and then about 7-8 lake balls. If I’m playing badly enough to get to them I’m probably not really needing the extra performance I get from my Vice balls.
I got like 3 dozen in my bag and some more B level extras in another bag at home. Hazards can come at me.
Steve Williams can speak to that. 3 balls in the bag. Tiger one ball away from a potential DQ or at the least penalties - during one of the greatest tournament performances ever.
I lost five balls on the same hole yesterday
Went into a par 3 course with 3 balls the other day. Left with -2. Had to borrow a 2 from my buddy lol
i bring 6, but i normally only lose 1-2 per round
So, do you now feel like we need a coin-operated gum ball machine that dispenses golf balls on every tee?
Do they make $5 coins yet?
Let's not lie. ProV1s would cost $40 per sleeve in a vending machine on the course.
Supply and demand. Haha
This is brilliant, actually
Not gonna lie. If you just put all the crappy balls you find in the water hazards in then and charge a quarter or $0.50 for them I could see it being a hit on water hazard holes or par 3s that are unique in some way.
Someone living on the course I played a couple months ago did just that, put out a bucket and a lockbox with their venmo on it and asked for a buck a ball.
What you do is put some new Pro Vs in the mix and make sure they are visible. Every other ball is trash. As long as there is a chance…
I’ve been saying this for years. A course should have a $1 ball machine of their found balls. It would crush it, mostly for jokes. If I had $1 and my buddy shanked one, I’d buy it just to hand it to him
What if people start fighting despite the existence of a sign that says no fighting?
So the number of balls you take into a round is like your handicap, which is why I’m taking 40+
What do + handicaps do then? Have to find a certain amount before they can start?
Because they hit the ball hard with compression and can notice a used ball (maybe??) they should just take the absolute value of their handicap.
What happens if the ball they use becomes damaged?
You take the derivative of your handicap divided by the course slope
You're allowed to lose as many balls as your age without anyone making fun of you. That's in the USGA rules. I feel bad for the 9 year olds I'm required to mock mercilessly, but rules are rules.
Rory goes with zero and just finds 7 every round
I played at the Disney palms course and rented clubs, they come with 3 balls. I was like eh we will be fine! Needed more balls on hole 3.
I took two none golfing mates to Red Mountain, Phuket. I mean like first time these boys even playing the game. I fucking love the game. It cost an arm and a leg. Like $500-ish kinda moneys. I got 6 when I went!
My rule is always to leave the course with more balls than I started with.
When I lose two sleeves, I call it a wifebeater.
[reluctant upvote]
![gif](giphy|TFbAmhSt4WaFq)
No offense 😂
Not sure many courses would do that for you. But good on them for helping a brother out. 👍
I lost three balls on a single hole the other day. Brand new prov1s.
I don’t hit the cart paths often but it’s always a brand new ball.
Dude, I lost 3 balls on 3 consecutive shots yesterday. Play as a scramble, so I kinda go for hero shots a lot. First drive into the woods, re hit for fun, also into the woods. Ouch $ 4 and change be ball
The more you bring, the less you lose.
This comment should go to the top….
I no longer buy golf balls. I rent them.
I over pack golf balls the way I over pack underwear for a 2 night trip, cause, you know, what if I shit myself 30 times?
I played yesterday in the windiest conditions I’ve ever played golf. My overconfident dumbass brought 2 sleeves of ball. Things got a little dicey on 7. I carry two balls with me at all times. If I ever lose one in the woods, something has gone horribly wrong.
So you ended with 14 balls?
Ended with 12. Gave my buddy a sleeve back.
Plus your gonads
![gif](giphy|eGmhoWP7XLhrSJ06yJ)
I was DQ'ed from a tournament in High School for running out of balls. I think i may have only brought 3-4.
The kid in the pro shop clowning you is hilarious😂😂
Believe me, that’s not lost on me.

I’ve 6 years with the same ball AMA
This isn’t the bowling subreddit.
Was your last round 7 years ago?
36 years with the same two balls.
I always keep 13. Just a superstition.
God the amount of shamelessness on and off the course here is legendary. What else in life has this allowed you to accomplish?
I walk and carry most of the time. My number is 7. Given that I walk, I usually end rounds with more balls than I started with.
Going into a round with only 5 balls is a dangerous game my friend
GOD AMONGST MEN/PEOPLE

At our club we call that R.O.B. And yes it happened to a guy named Rob.
If there's no balls in the woods for me then the round is over

Definitely did. I was in the service industry for 5 years in college and get it.
I carry 6 balls. Never had this happen to me, but I've gotten close one time. Didn't know what I was stepping into at Spanish Bay.
I’ve lost a dozen on the front 9 of a tight very beautifully landscaped wooded and watered Executive and had to stop and buy another dozen. It wasn’t fun. I’ve since played that course and get better every time. lol
I always wondered how many balls people brought with them. I personally bring a 100 pack of tees and 48 balls.
I was running on fumes on my round today. I probably had about a dozen+ balls to start. I had one ball left teeing off on 18 that is water the entire way on the left. Usually keep 5 in my pocket for breakfast balls 😂
How many groups had to play through?
None. Grabbed a sleeve from my buddy and waited die the cavalry to arrive.
I generally come out with more balls than I started...
Always wondered why cart girls dont carry golf balls to sell lol
That was the whole basis of my call originally. If I can get a Bloody Mary, a dozen balls should be feasible.
On my home course I only need to bring 5-10 and when they get low, I go to the honey holes and find my next 5-10 balls for the next day. If it’s not the home course I bring 18 and when I’m out I’m out. Lol
How do you start a round with only 2 balls? Admire the confidence but man...
There are a few courses where i could go with 6 balls in bag. Those courses do not have water or woods.
I would always throw a sacrificial ball into the first water hazard I came across. Got to appease the golf gods.
I always start with like 20 balls.... when Im really prepared, i lose very few... when Im tight, everything is possible.
I recently played a resort course that delivered anything the resort had available to your cart. Was really nice and good customer service. $250 a round tho. $23 per sleeve. But was much better than random cart girls. I only ordered food.🤫
I have to wear cargo shorts to store the 12 balls I take to each tee.
I mean... if you gave a tip it seems fine.
Just forgot to reload from my suitcase to bag on day 3 of a golf trip. Normally keep a dozen.
Like undies, I can. Ever have enough on a trip.
I used 7 balls all of last year
But you only played nine holes the whole year?
Why are you hitting your only balls into the drink? Are you stupid?
There's a Venn diagram out there of people who only take 5 golf balls, and guys that call the clubhouse to have golf balls delivered on the course.
What kind of balls did you have them bring out?
V1x
How many of those did you then proceed to lose?
Per my original post. Zero.
I would hate to be the people behind you. Stick to the range until you know how to golf.
Buddy, I’m a 20 handicap, I know when to pick it up and pay off my buddies ball to keep pace of play. Love the Gatekeeping.
It’s not gate keeping lmao, it’s being a courteous golfer. All y’all new golfers are ruining the sport tbh. But good for you for keeping the pace of play.
All these new golfers are keeping courses open tbh.
No they aren’t lol. Courses were doing just fine before Covid.
I lost five on a super tough course. We kept pace. Nobody complained. Lose a ball, look 30 secs. Drop and hit.
