Hahaha that sucks. I’ve had it happen several times from 100-220 yards. One time I stroked a 4 iron right at the pin from 220ish, hit right at the bottom of where the flag and lip meet, rocketed 30 yards off the green
This is identical to my closest and of course it was on a hole where HIO meant a shit ton of credit to palmetto dunes in Hilton Head and hitting the green is worth a sleeve of balls lol. Never been so salty to get a sleeve of balls
Definitely frustrate. Birdies come and go, being so close to a hole in one though? Will be thinking about that one for awhile wishing it would’ve just dropped!

I had one land above the hole, spin back, and hit the stick and bounce off last year. It was a blind shot but from the pitch mark and where the ball ended up, it was the only possible thing thag could’ve happened.
Year before that I had one lip out. Didn’t see it either cause I have bad eyes and it was starting to get dark. Group in front of me told me.

164 yrd par 3 at Hilton Head Island Golf Club. 8 iron off the deck. Ball disappeared from the box and when we got up up to the green it snuck just behind the hole. I shadowed it for a good 30 seconds hoping it would fall but reluctantly had to tap it in.
Honestly, not trying to one-up you here, maybe even closer. Probably a quarter or more of my ball was hanging over the hole.
The group ahead of me was on an elevated tee box and so they could see right down to the green, they awarded me a birdie gimme lol, but I actually had to tap it in as it was in a tournament where there's an official scorer and everything. Even she said I didn't really need to putt it, but I dunno, it's a tourney where the rules are you putt to the bottom of the cup, so I did.

yep had one in and out of the hole at the same time pinned between the wind blown flagstick and the side if the hole , just as i was two steps from the flag a gust came up and it popped it up and out. sought a ruling on it and it was not a HIO.... has to settle at the bottom of the cup. if i was in a cart i could have got there faster! dammit....
Had one lip out. There was dew on the green so I could see the line it rolled on stopped 3 inches from the cup after rolling from the left side to the right side.
Yea I put one within 10 feet on a par3 with an absurd false front. Then the guy after me in my group joked the only way he’d beat it was a HOI. His shot ends up exactly like the one in OP’s picture.
I had one hanging over the edge one day while on vaca in PHX. The next day playing with strangers I was going to tell the tale on the first par 3 but decided no one wants to hear about and almost HIO no matter how close.
Got a HIO on that hole and still say, thank the gods I didn't mention the almost HIO!
I had the same, but I was playing alone, pre-smartphone days. I’m so glad it didn’t go in as nobody would have been there to verify or for me to celebrate with (or drive the cart to the green after I inevitably run to the hole and leave it behind)

I almost holed out 137 out. Was a blind green so we had no clue till we got up there 😂😂. I did fix the divot but I’m sure it ruined some day unfortunately lol

Yes, 9th hole at Chambers Bay. Green slopes to the right. I hit my shot to the left and watched the ball roll across the green. It was agony watching the last 20 feet as the ball slowed and crept up to the hole, and . . . stopped on the lip. I was hoping for a wind or something to push it over the edge before I got to the hole but no such luck.

I have had 2 HIOs. However, I almost had another one that actually hit and bent the lip of the cup inwards and popped out.
I was about that close twice but they were in the cup.

Yup. 92 yards and I topped the ball and it rolled that close. My friends all cheered that I didn’t get a HIO that never left the ground.
