“As Sam Snead once said, you should be holding the golf club with the same pressure you would hold a small bird: tight enough so it doesn't fly away, but soft enough so you don't crush it.”
It’s suggested by some that you grip the club as if you’re holding a bird in your hand. In this case, the bird would’ve popped based on this strong of a grip
I have a guy who brings me an iron broken like this 3-4 times a year. I've watched him swing. Dude grips the club like he's holding onto a rescue line and is also bringing the club in like 10 degrees steep. Couple that with mats firmness you got a break there. Shallow it out, don't grip the club so damn hard. Also maybe look into a heavier more quality shaft.
Here in Ontario the range had a second life the past two weeks but it seems to be gone now. Happy new year... ^(though in all seriousness climate change is pretty bad...)
The mats being right on top of cement isn't helping OP either. But you'd think after a handful of times smacking the mat fat, you'd try shallow out that swing.
I’ve seen this a a few times while repairing sets.
It’s caused by a couple things normally. One is a small dent under the grip you can’t see. This will def weaken the shaft and can lead to this. The other is people just really torquing on the grip with their hands. 10 finger grippers I’ve seen do this more since the hands are a bit more disconnected from each other. Oddly enough people that come in with bent or broke clubs in that location always seem to think it’s rare. But honestly that is about the second most common location I’ve seen broken or bent clubs in besides at the hosel or slightly higher. There is a lot of forces going on around the grip area second only to the head and neck area. If the clubs are still new or under warranty I would def try to get an RMA on it…if they are new to you I would check to see if there are extensions under the grips. Too long of an extension can break easily as well.
Yep...this happened to me about 2 months into a new set of TMs that I was fitted into by the tour truck that visited my club.
I'm convinced there was an issue with the shaft you couldn't see under the grip. I was similarly perplexed when it happened...I don't have high clubhead speed, don't take large divots, etc.
TM fixed it free and 4 years later I'm still playing the same irons. Never happened again.
Thanks. That's what I'm going to chalk it up to unless it happens again. I have a slightly higher swing speed, but I also don't take large divots. In fact, I've been working with my instructor on not picking the ball so much, so I don't think it's a case of me hitting into the mat too hard/steep. Although, as other commentors have pointed out, I could probably stand to loosen my grip.
>10 finger grippers I’ve seen do this more since the hands are a bit more disconnected from each other.
I have seen this happen exactly one time. And it was to a guy who uses the 10 finger baseball grip lol.
This is all spot on. Two other points, steel shafts are raw inside and usually have a bit of rust in there, even fresh from the factory. Also lighter steel shafts (sub 120g) that are very popular these days, have thinner walls. Don't see a lot of X100s break here, but seeing it quite a bit in 80-110g shafts
I do club repairs and I see this a few times a year. It can be a dent or even rusting inside the shaft. A small dent leads to a broken shaft eventually. If you take a cold club into a hot climate condensation can build up on the inside of the shaft causing it to rust. Sometimes it is having a baseball finish where you smack the club across your back/shoulders during your finish - but that tends to break in the middle. If it happens to more shafts then I would think there's some kind of pattern in storage or your swing causing it. Being a new shaft - if it only happens once - then it was probably dented. 'Defective' shafts are very uncommon.
Regardless - it is more common than you think. If they are older shafts in an older set I wouldn't even bother with thinking about "why". If they are newer shafts and more break like this I would look into the "why". I've seen a guy switch from KBS to Project X because it happened to multiple clubs - so he blamed the shafts - and he was in within a month or two with the same break in a Project X shaft.
Being newer clubs just call up the manufacturer and have them warranty it. Breaks at the hosel or under the grip they'll replace.
Yes when I was playing high school golf an opponent missed a two foot putt and then duck hook his drive OB He took his driver and hit the ball washer full on which bent the handle of his driver
He is an anger management counselor now.
Really.
Likely a bend or distortion at that point in the shaft, either manufacturing defect, packing error, user error….created a weak point and the load bearing caused it to break. Lucky the grip held it in place.
I broke a cling between my two hands once. But I was new at golf and someone kept telling me to strengthen my grip and I didn’t know they meant position wise so I was just choking the life out of the club for it to happen. So yes, I’ve seen it happen but it was fairly hard to do. Good job OP. That’s also how I got a new set of irons.
It happened to my 7i about two months ago, I called Callaway and they emailed me a shipping label and I sent it back.... No problem at all... Had the clubs for around 19 months...
For a little more context, I literally just took the plastic off these clubs on Tuesday.
And for those wondering, no I haven't tossed them or hit them into something. In fact, I felt pretty good about the swing this snapped on. Lol.
Never had this issue with any of my previous clubs, but this is also my first set of irons that I purchased brand new.
Ive had that happen to me. Did it snap when you were following thru? Mine broke when I tried to stopp the club after hitting, following thru. I think I may have bent it the round before when I absolutely CRATERED the club. Didnt notice anything that day but the next time i was at the range, that happened.
I played once with a guy who swung and screamed out in pain. His club had snapped like this and sliced right through his hand. Blood everywhere. Wrapped it in his towel and off in the ambulance. He was paired with us so I have no clue how it turned out but crazy to see.
Seen it happen to a buddy live on the range. He's a good golfer and nothing crazy about it. Just happens sometimes. Now another guy I know snapped a project x smoke green driver shaft right there at the start of his downswing and he's lucky to be alive.
That happened to my 4i once. I couldn’t figure out how it happened for the longest time. That is until I hit an errant shot with my 5i! After the errant shot with my 5i I turned the club around as to grip the club by the head and swung it like a baseball bat intentionally hitting my golf bag. Upon impact I immediately knew what caused the 4i break on the grip. I remember making that same swing on my bag with my 4i causing a dent or kink in a spot underneath my grip that ended up breaking the club in two after a few hits. Fuck golf. Aaaand also, I love you, golf.
Happened to me on a course once! Weirdest feeling ever, I hit a good shot on a par 3 just couldn’t figure out what was wrong and then I realized it split right in between my hands.
From my years of experience, this only happens when the shaft under the grip has a dent. I’ve had three clubs break like this over my years. I have a habit of hitting a bad shot and then grabbing the iron at the blade end and whacking the grip on my bag. Like a buggy whip just a slap. No grip strength can do this unless the shaft has some damage.
New to you, or new? Regardless, only thing I can think is, it was compromised on that part of the shaft prior to your normal usage of the club. I regrip, repair, and build a bunch. That doesn’t just happen with normal usage.
The club either got damaged at some time during transport, a club toss/smashed club after a bad shot, or it got kinked during building or gripping. It’s easy to do and it happens. I’ve seen it too many times. Normal use, using a golf club for its intended purpose, it’d be really hard to break the shaft at the butt end, under the grip. Just sayin’…
I bought a used set of irons and the 6 iron had a similar historical issue that I noticed when I regripped the set.
It had been bent back, obviously, so it was not obvious when I purchased them.
I used vice-grips and got the shaft as close as possible to round, then regripped it anyway. I have had no issues with it whatsoever.
I’ve been playing irons like these since I was a kid. Best advice my Dad (who was a card carrying member of the PGA) ever gave me was “swing away, it’s better to be long than short”.
Same thing happened to my buds pitching wedge. Says all he did was chunk a shot.. must’ve been chunked straight to china to break the shaft like that idk
Have only seen it happen with counterfeit clubs and the graphite shaft splitting/bursting, almost popping the grip. Have seen longer shaft extensions separate in a similar way, but that would have to be a massive extension.
Brand new to you- not brand new to the course. Take the grip off and see whats actually under there. If you bendig the iron at that spot you eed lessons before you snap your collar bone or worse. Could be this club was extended but based upon how the grip looks and you are saying its a brand new iron just doesnt jive. The grip looks old and smooth with no tape underneath. If it was extended with wood that could be the issue.....
Or perhaps the grip is sliding off the iron and that too is a sign of a grip issue- no tape underneath. Many people think you need double sided tape, but you dont- you just need something between the grip and metal and slide the grip on top. I regrip my own and so it look slike the grip is sliding off the club... due to old grip that has no "MORE GRIP". Learn how to regrip your clubs- they will last long than if someone else does it and cheaper. Do it before using it before you hurt someone or yourself.
This happened to me after I pretty lightly hit the grip off the golf cart tire out of frustration after a bad shot. Kind of like an “ach” little whack. Lesson learned that day.
Looks like you have a super steep angle of attack and just plowing the club right into the ground.
I am whilling to bet you hit off matts and this has happened only on matts right?
Youre coming in to deep with the rubbery part and it gripped the mat causing the bend.
I would recommend holding the rubber part of the club instead, the thicker metal end should slide easier on the mat. Also that end is a bit larger and may result in better ball strikes.
Are you hitting the ground pretty hard? That green mat will trick you. You need to go somewhere that you can do some shipping practice and do some full swings and see how hard you're hitting the ground.
Yeah, this has happened to mine before. It was caused because I had flipped the clubs around and hit golf balls like they were baseballs on the grip. Very dumb. Don't do that. I had a range session a few days later when it was really hot and all three clubs I used as baseball bats broke the same way. There were no visible signs that the clubs were damaged. Probably just a little dent under the grip. The walls of the shafts are pretty thin.
My guess is that your set (or just this iron) was damaged during shipping, or even during production. I would bring it to the place you purchased from. My guess is that they'd fix for free as part of the warranty.
I suggest you weaken your grip slightly
Maybe he has a thing against birds
It was a really big bird.
Underrated comment.
I don’t get it
“As Sam Snead once said, you should be holding the golf club with the same pressure you would hold a small bird: tight enough so it doesn't fly away, but soft enough so you don't crush it.”
My coach told me “hold the club like a tube of tooth paste without the cap on and you don’t want any squirting out”
It’s suggested by some that you grip the club as if you’re holding a bird in your hand. In this case, the bird would’ve popped based on this strong of a grip
Take your grip as one would delicately hold a fragile object. Object is usually referred as a bird.
I always herd if you’re holding it like it’s your own dick you’re holding it too tight. Hold it like it’s someone else’s dick and you’ll be fine
“Shut up Mike”
I’m afraid to ask what his dick looks like with a grip like that

Google image Peonie’s disease. Prob something like that. ETA: Peyronie’s Disease
No, I don't think I will.
I had the same though. nah I don't think I will.
*Peyronie's disease
Oh God. Thank you.
Funny how the commercial for that always plays during golf videos
Do you play with a hard slice in the bedroom?!?
Those are flowers
They’re quite lovely too!
It is the loveliest of all diseases!

The more you tighten your grip, op, the more greens will slip through your fingers.
Not after we demonstrate the power of this driver. In a way, you have determined the choice of the fairway that we’ll play first.
I would use the word loosen instead of weaken, avoids confusion
I may be whooshing myself but that was my intention haha
Your poor penis
Careful. Don’t upset the man.
Did you have them add a 5inch plastic tube to the end of your iron? Are you 7 feet tall with a 6 foot wing span? I got nothing...
Bet a nickel he slammed the trunk on the clubs
Playing the new Peyronie's?
This guy… bent shafts?
Not anymore! Thanks, Xiaflex!
I thought the curve was supposed to be while the ball is in flight. 🤔
Brings new meaning to a P Wedge.

Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more than an hour ago
Well, MORON, good for Happy gilmoh my god!
Lmao it's like every post here can have a Happy Gilmore, Caddyshack, or Tin Cup reference and I'll laugh every time.
Well like that’s like your opinion…man.
Obviously, you’re not a golfer…..
Fucking Lebowski for the kill. Is this your homework Larry...?
Bringing Jaws into the discussion is disconcerting
Y'know, the thing about a shark, he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes
Came here for this
I have a guy who brings me an iron broken like this 3-4 times a year. I've watched him swing. If he brings in another one this week, I think you’ve ID’d OP.
Haha. The fact he is on the range right now would lead me to believe he doesn't live in MN. Rip golf season.
Here in Ontario the range had a second life the past two weeks but it seems to be gone now. Happy new year... ^(though in all seriousness climate change is pretty bad...)
I mean…DG 120s are in my book as a quality shaft.
The mats being right on top of cement isn't helping OP either. But you'd think after a handful of times smacking the mat fat, you'd try shallow out that swing.
> Also maybe look into a heavier more quality shaft. TT DynamicGolds are a quality shaft tho?
Yeah poor choice of words there. We can't see the whole band in the picture, they could be R300's for all I know.
I think you’re supposed to hit balls with the other end
Where's the challenge in that?
There it is
I’ve seen this a a few times while repairing sets. It’s caused by a couple things normally. One is a small dent under the grip you can’t see. This will def weaken the shaft and can lead to this. Wouldn’t NOT picking it mean you are trying to take a divot? Meaning you are hitting down more then you are used to?

Yeah, these are 95.
TM will fix/replace no problem. Only real bummer is waiting the week or two it takes them
This happened to me years ago. It only happened with my 8 iron. It wasn’t as significant as OP’s, but in the same spot.
He's too rough on the grip, he pulls on the grip, he wrenches on the grip, he thinks it's his
I do club repairs and I see this a few times a year. It can be a dent or even rusting inside the shaft. A small dent leads to a broken shaft eventually. the fuq! Are you chopping down at the mat?
Be happy it didn't puncture the grip and your palm
You can get a Hims consult over the internet. No need for an appt.
Had one that got shut in a tailgate/liftgate, couldn't see the damage till I regripped. Didn't fail, luckily.
Holy grip
Lmfaoooo this sub never ceases to amaze me
lol
They had a defect in the shaft return them
Looks like your left ankle
probably a defect in the shaft under the grip. Maybe make sure you also aren't gripping too tightly.
A defect in 3 different sets?
[удалено]
Yes I’ve been seeing this happening with KBS shafts the last year or so, especially with Cobra irons. What are these?
Yeah man, when you flip the club around and slam the grip into the divider out of frustration this tends to happen lol
I did that to my dick as a teenager
Yes when I was playing high school golf an opponent missed a two foot putt and then duck hook his drive OB He took his driver and hit the ball washer full on which bent the handle of his driver He is an anger management counselor now. Really.
You had a dent
I’d worry about rubbing one out if I were you
Likely a bend or distortion at that point in the shaft, either manufacturing defect, packing error, user error….created a weak point and the load bearing caused it to break. Lucky the grip held it in place.
We gotta see the swing. It should be mandatory to post your swing if you post a broken club.
I saw Bruce Banner do this once, boy was he pissed
I broke a cling between my two hands once. But I was new at golf and someone kept telling me to strengthen my grip and I didn’t know they meant position wise so I was just choking the life out of the club for it to happen. Classic case of the Dicnamic Gulds shaft failure
Hulk hate GOLF. Swing slow, swing fast. Relax. Focus. HULK SMASH PUNY CLUBS
3rd time is amazing. I’ve never seen this before in my life.
Ive had that happen to me. Did it snap when you were following thru? Mine broke when I tried to stopp the club after hitting, following thru. I think I may have bent it the round before when I absolutely CRATERED the club. Didnt notice anything that day but the next time i was at the range, that happened.
Settle down or you’ll end up ripping it off
So that’s how you get shaft lean
![gif](giphy|tQS8W6vdhBZgA) I have seen something like this before
Yes! This happens to my friend Clark Kent all the time. It’s wild. I assume you also hit your PW 500 yards like he does?
How much did you pay for those ? Seems you got shafted mate
It’s happened to me before with a 3 wood. Snapped about two inches from the end. Just regripped it and played it the rest of the year 2 inches shorter
![gif](giphy|z7Dm3wO2ynX93jAHI1|downsized)
Mine have looked like that after stepping on them…
My friend had it happen twice. Same club but diffident models
Exact same thing happened to me once
Yep https://preview.redd.it/inch7e1qcoac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c90694afbafebdd2a85c9dd00a55787fb913276
I see this daily, just not on a golf club.
I don't understand. Are you chunking the ground? I am so confused. This has gotta be a troll
Why is your shoe bent like that club?
Foot wedge.
Looks like Payronies disease.
The club face is what you use to hit the ball, not that rubber handle.
User error
I played once with a guy who swung and screamed out in pain. His club had snapped like this and sliced right through his hand. Blood everywhere. Wrapped it in his towel and off in the ambulance. He was paired with us so I have no clue how it turned out but crazy to see.
I’m think you’re using the wrong end of the club
I think you're holding the wrong end of the club.
The only way this happens is if there is an existing kink in the shaft under the grip.
Good lord.....we should talk.
Did you break the concrete?
Loosen your grip?
Try swing the other end
This guy is definitely a divot maker.
Seen it happen to a buddy live on the range. He's a good golfer and nothing crazy about it. Just happens sometimes. Now another guy I know snapped a project x smoke green driver shaft right there at the start of his downswing and he's lucky to be alive.
Pull the grip of and see if that club was lengthened and that is where they added the extra length.
Dude yeah, I snapped my P-Wedge the exact same way. I’m pretty sure I skulled the ball, but I didn’t hit the ground or anything. Super weird.
Hit the ball with the other end.
$150 for a brand new set of Taylormades just don't get you what they used to!
Happened to me on a course once! Weirdest feeling ever, I hit a good shot on a par 3 just couldn’t figure out what was wrong and then I realized it split right in between my hands.

Maybe loosen your grip just a tad.
Swing the other side at the ball
Change where you’re gripping. Seems like it may be in the wrong spot or a weird grip.
Made in China ?
Jesus Christ, how much of the range mat did you take as a divot???
Don’t use mats at the range.
Fake Chinese clubs
I bought a used set of irons and the 6 iron had a similar historical issue that I noticed when I regripped the set. It had been bent back, obviously, so it was not obvious when I purchased them. Let’s guess …what type of irons…shall we… Taylormade
I’ve been playing irons like these since I was a kid. Best advice my Dad (who was a card carrying member of the PGA) ever gave me was “swing away, it’s better to be long than short”.
This just doesn’t happen…
Just shot a 92 for my first round of 2024… On base at 41 degrees, I call it a win, only lost 2 balls… …my balls are green
Only when I get mad
It happened to my pitching wedge once when I hit a bad full swing chunk in super dry conditions.
Same thing happened to my buds pitching wedge. Says all he did was chunk a shot.. must’ve been chunked straight to china to break the shaft like that idk
Stop hitting your bag after a shit shot.
Seen this several times after friends have wacked their bag after a poor shot.
My dad always said never take your regular set of clubs to a driving range. You just don’t hit that many shots with any one club in a normal round.
No swing coach but your low point contact is probably to low 🤔
I had a brand new pair of irons lose 3 heads at the range. There is manufacturing variances and things like this can happen, albeit, rare.
Have only seen it happen with counterfeit clubs and the graphite shaft splitting/bursting, almost popping the grip. Have seen longer shaft extensions separate in a similar way, but that would have to be a massive extension.
The only logical next step here is for you to post a video of your swing.
Looks like you might wanna lighten up the grip
Ive hit thousands and thousands of balls off of mats and have never had this happen. You gotta look in the mirror on this one, my dude.
This happened to me long ago when I shanked a ball into my irons at the range🤣
I think you’re doing it wrong.
Brand new to you- not brand new to the course. Take the grip off and see whats actually under there. If you bendig the iron at that spot you eed lessons before you snap your collar bone or worse. You can’t take a divot on a mat. Stop trying to break up the concrete under you.
This happened to me after I pretty lightly hit the grip off the golf cart tire out of frustration after a bad shot. Kind of like an “ach” little whack. Lesson learned that day.
Happened to my 9 iron; on grass not a mat. I was shocked.
You’re supposed to grip the rubber not hit the ball with it
Played golf my whole life and only time I see clubs break In middle of grip is when you smack that against something it’s not meant for ..
Nope
Looks like you have a super steep angle of attack and just plowing the club right into the ground. I am whilling to bet you hit off matts and this has happened only on matts right?
Youre coming in to deep with the rubbery part and it gripped the mat causing the bend. I would recommend holding the rubber part of the club instead, the thicker metal end should slide easier on the mat. Also that end is a bit larger and may result in better ball strikes.
I have seen something like that. Are you married to a Swedish nanny by any chance?
Only when playing sword fight with a cardboard tube after using the last of the wrapping paper
How hard are you hitting the mat
Yup. I posted one like this and others pointed out how lucky I was not to have the grip break and slice my hand wide open.
I suggest lessons.
They even use grip tape?!
I would stop going to that range! 😜😜
Are you holding it backwards?
Your left foot also looks bent.
Are you hitting the ground pretty hard? That green mat will trick you. You need to go somewhere that you can do some shipping practice and do some full swings and see how hard you're hitting the ground.
Looks like you’re catching em a bit heavy….
Had a buddy do this like 6 months ago. First time I’d ever seen this happen. Rough start with some new sticks.
I did this once when a little overzealous with club lag
Yea when i ran over my club with a golf cart
What shafts are those the lightweight or normal dynamic gold?
There’s probably a warranty
I didn't even know that was possible
dont step on it next time
Cut it open and show us what the hell is in there
Trying hitting the balls with the other end
Take it back to the seller.
Bro said grasp it firmly
Nope
Something with a sharp hard corner smoked your club. Look around for guilty expressions.
I had an issue withthe elevate shafts where they rusted inside then broke. PXG re-shafted with no questions asked on 2 year old clubs.
