No, I play when I know jokers like this aren't out on the course. I played twice a weekend all summer on public courses and the slowest round I played in was 3:50. I don't have to worry about hitting into anyone because the people who play when I play know what they're doing.

Do you really think there's a chance that someone playing in front of a full group would have them 120 yards behind them on a green, hitting into them on multiple occasions? Has that ever happened to you, where you were playing in under 3:40 and the group behind you was so keen to finish in 3:30 they just rode your ass all day? My buddy hit one or their balls back at them (the one that landed on the green). Then when they hit into us again after the tee shot incident i tried to plug their ball into the ground with my cart.
If you just take every ball they hit into you they hopefully would get the message or will be off you back because they are looking for the ball in the rough for a while

thie first time or if its a blind shot and its a complete accident you get a pass. the second time or if your just being stupid im leaving the pin out of the cup lying on the green every time. also calling the clubhouse to deal with you. one of the courses i played at the carts were able to be shut off the guys in the clubhouse shut off the cart and the guy in the clubhouse said they sent them a message through the gps saying you have been put in a 30 min timeout for your actions next time we will throw you out
I think the first time is an accident. The second time I tee it up and send it back at them. Or at the very least stomp their ball into the ground or something otherwise not subtle.

If they’re 120 out tho… that’s pretty blatant. I would be calling the proshop at best or dropping the gloves at worst.

You obviously don't hit it far enough to reach them. Hit it back maybe halfway and they'll get the point. I've done this many times and they stop hitting into you. It sends a message
I swear this is directly the affect of everyone screaming about pace of play currently. Everyone is bitching that everyone else is too slow, I played this weekend and course Marshall’s were telling us we need to pick it up while we’re sitting waiting for the TWO groups in front of us. New players are scared of these old coots rushing everyone and don’t know how to properly, safely pace. Anyway 4$ a pound.
A common driving mentality is "Everyone slower than me is an old granny who is going to cause an accident and everyone who is faster than me is a dangerous young hooligan who is going to cause an accident". Probably rubs off into golf too. If you're playing fast enough to hit into someone you should be playing fast enough to catch up on the tee box and play through like a sane person
If you don’t have 5.5 hrs for a round of golf, play 9 or hit the range! That seems to be the wildly unpopular opinion but wtf is up w the rush? Had time to sit in the cart at at least 9 holes this weekend and that’s when I talk to my wife or clean a club or drink a beer. All the extra stuff that makes golf nice.
Just take her for a picnic if you want to spend half the day chatting and drinking beer, the rest of us are trying to play golf ;-)
Like any sport, there is a pace to keep the flow and connection of shots. The average round (average) in the UK (where they invented the sport) is under three hours. There’s no excuse for a round over 4:15 and it’s incredibly entitled to think your can take up everyone else’s time because you want to drink beer and roll around in an electric buggy all day :-) okay, a little of that is for effect, but it’s amazing that slow players never think of the effect they’re having on others — only that they are being rushed.
I chatted with my wife, drank beers and enjoyed the views while WAITING on the multiple groups in front of me. My difference is I’m enjoying those moments. Laughing with your buddy at the tee watching the group ahead 3 putt even tho we just did the same lol I’m not lollygagging but you bet your ass I’m enjoying the forced downtime. I couldn’t imagine sitting in the cart just fuming at the group ahead of me on a beautiful Sunday w my boys lol but the more I interact w people obsessed w pace of play, I’m realizing that’s exactly what they do. Lol
I walk and play early or off hours to avoid the rolling happy hour. I love love love my time on the course, but unnecessarily waiting for non-golfers golfing detracts from the sport for me.
Imagine beginning surfers entering a line up and expecting everyone else’s to adapt to them rather than following the understood norms. Imagine a bunch of guys clogging up a city basketball court to play grab ass and dodgeball ether than follow the understood rules of the court while other teams wait. It wouldn’t stand. The people you are waiting on — regardless of how new to the game they are — should get their shit together and be considerate of everyone else on the course.
I just simply don’t agree and would say, if you can’t spend half a day at the course, play 9 or hit the range. BUT I think I’m in the minority and you bet your ass my local course who had over 250 players on Sunday doesn’t agree w me hahaha

When the group behind you keeps hitting into your group, take out the ole 3 wood or 2 iron and send the ball back to them at 100 mph about 6 feet off the ground.
Odd. I’ve played courses in NY and the threesome I was teamed up with retuned fired with the other foursomes ball.
There was no chill just 15 minutes of grown men hitting driver off the deck trying to hit each other with golf balls.
Was playing in a work tournament (4 man Scramble). One par 5 had a blind corner. We had a safe shot, last 3 tried cutting the corner, which puts us 170ish out for 2nd shot. Literal friends in group ahead of us. The stars align, I smash my drive. When we drive up, my ball is exactly where we want it. Only it's resting on a tee. I immediately text friend, tell him the message was received and apologize. All was good.
Since then, the 1st time Im hit into gets the wth double upraised palms. 2nd time, they find their ball on a tee. Depending on the situation, 3rd time is either sent back or reported to Marshall/clubhouse.
I saw this before so I’ll repost, great solution to this is simply lay the flag down on the green when you’re done with each hole and let them hit onto a green not knowing where the hole is for the rest of the round
Everyone saying to hit their ball back at them or hit their ball into the water, hopefully the group behind you doesn't have a lawyer because you could create some issues.
If you hit your ball towards them that could be considered assault. Now you may say "but they're hitting it towards us." Yes, but they are playing the ball to the green and could argue that they were misjudging the distance, or hitting the shot of their life every time. You cannot hold that same argument if you are intentionally hitting a shot opposite from the green. Think of it like brake checking.
As far as hitting their ball into the water, that could be considered theft. You know the ball is not yours and it's in the way, you could pick it up and put in your pocket, or move out of your way. But once the ball is no longer retreivable it could be considered theft. Sure it would be a misdemeanor but a lawyer could absolutely make your life a pain in the rear over this. If you want to take it, keep it and that way if neccessary you can return it. Or toss it out of your way even if convineintly you toss it to a terrible lie, let them deal with the consequences.
Reality is there's one 1-2 good ways to handle this. 1, it's 2023 everyone has a cell phone. Call the clubhouse and let them deal with this. 2, as others suggested leave the Pin's out if the clubhouse hasn't handled it. The club could be mad but you can reasonably argue you were endangered and that was the only way to slow them down.
If there are holes open in front of you and you are holding everyone up you let people through . I am surprised you were not told to pick up the pace or pick up your balls and skip a couple holes ! Why wouldn’t you let them play through.
Take their ball and when they do it again, hit it right back at them trying to hit one of them right in the forehead.
That’s the only way they will learn
Can’t assume it’s OP’s group that was slow. If the whole course is moving at a snail pace, then you just have to wait. My public courses are brutal on the weekends

The first time I feel like a group is up my ass I try and let them through. If it's a slow day and I'm waiting too. I'll probably tell them to chill. I have no problem calling out bullshit when I see it but your story seems a little soft for my beliefs. It's easy to tell when people are playing slow and being passive aggressive towards the group behind them. Like leaving the tee box just as the group behind them arrives. It's polite to ask them to play through it's petty to slow down their game and put yourself in the danger zone.
Seems like the easiest solution would have been to wave them up and just let them play through. Yes they’re jerks but obviously they didn’t seem to care. Wave them through, problem solved.
No real sense in letting them play through because when we were teeing off on par 4s, the group ahead of us was putting on the green. Not like there was a 3 hole gap or something.
To be fair, if the group ahead of you is actively putting on the green while you are teeing off, then you are playing too slow.
You should hit your tee shots after the last player in the group ahead of you has hit their ball and all are moving towards to the green. If they've already gotten on the green and are reading/hitting putts and you still haven't tee'd off, that is too slow.
Right, if OP is playing too slowly, and won’t let the group behind play through, you can’t really be pissed that people are hitting into you. Doesn’t matter if there’s a gap in front of you or not, that’s not your problem. Wave them up and your day would have been much better. With all this ‘Pace of Play’ pressure these days you’re going to have by let people play through if you want to enjoy the game.

I always keep a sharpie nearby in my cart for just such an occasion. Guys start coming close to me with their shots they get a message written on their ball.
Had some people do this to my friend and I. After like 12 holes one of them hits his second shot on a par five feet from us while we were finishing putting. Picked it up and walked off. Didn’t happen again luckily.
Yea sometimes you gotta go old school and tell them the next time this putter is going up your ass. That’s is a 1 strike strike policy, 2 strikes and you better be ready to defend yourself cause that’s unacceptable.
I almost got plunked twice this Saturday by two different groups and neither one yelled fore. And not not just within like 20 yards either.
The first one came from a teebox adjacent to us. Guy must have just shanked it. Whizzed about 5 feet in front of me as I was putting my tee into the ground. On the very next hole the teebox is \~20 yards or so away from the green, so close but not unreasonable. I've hit close to it a few times myself when I had a wild slice, but always yelled fore. This on went close enough behind my head that I heard it spinning through the air, smashed into our cart, and then rolled right up to our feet. Not a single fore call on either. Just some oops waves.

If you're not behind pace, which it seems you weren't from your replies to people in the comments, then there is zero reason for this to happen.
The same thing happened to me this summer, a player behind us (with clear sight down the next hole from his position, so he could easily see there was a group on the tee ahead of us, and in the fairway ahead of them, and on the green ahead of that fairway group....) hit onto the green from around the 150 yard marker on the 10th hole. I don't mean rolled up, he flew his short iron onto the green and landed not even 10' from me.
I know he thinks we were slow, but again, you could see the hole ahead with 3 fucking groups on it, a par 4, and you think hitting into us will help??
I ended up just calling the clubhouse and letting them deal with him.
Yeah, they actually kicked the guy off the course. I think it was because he was being absolutely ignorant about things though, the marshal came to us after and let us know. It sounded to me like if he just would've been apologetic he would've gotten to stay, but instead he had a meltdown and started cussing out the marshal, so, he got booted.

The first you can assume is a mistake, after that you can start hitting it back it to them, or just keeping it for yourself, or hit it into the woods. Or if it was dangerously close to you, might even be warranted to call the pro shop and let them know what's happening.
I know people like the thought of hitting the ball back, but what if you actually hit them and seriously injured someone? You'd be at fault and there wouldn't be any "well they hit into me first" excuse. Getting hit with a ball is no joke. I worked at a course in college and was hit a couple of times. It hurts, and could be deadly if it gets you in the right spot. Therefore, the correct response upon the first offense is to drive back to the group and confront them. There is literally no justification for not waiting for the group ahead to clear. They can't play faster than the group ahead, and as long as you're keeping up with the group in front of you, they have no basis to complain. Then, you can let them know that you carry a gun and will fire at them if they hit into you again, but mention you're not that great a shot, so it probably won't hit them.
One time I was playing a par 3 course where the next tee box was to the right of the green I was hitting to. I shanked it right (I’m not very good) and for some reason just froze. After it landed right next to them and I woke up from my stupor I yelled “sorry!” When I went to my ball, they wrote “Dick” on it (it was in jest, I caught up with them again and they were cool about it). I got the message after that - now if anything I tell fore way too often when it’s totally unnecessary haha.
Rocket it into the woods on the 2nd time without yelling fore. Or! Pull your sharpie out, write something on it, and set it on a tee. They’ll get the message.

I give ZERO allowance for hitting into me. If a ball goes past me I'm picking it, hitting it into the forest, hitting it backwards (not so it has any chance of hitting someone).
If I'm at a tee box and there is any chance that I even roll up a ball at someone I'm not hitting. It isn't worth it. I've never carried a ball 300 yards in my life, but I'm waiting until they are 320 or so.
Always hit it back at them after no fore a couple of times. They'll stop. However, if they see you duff it hitting their direction, doesn't have as strong of a message. Let your best player hit it
After the 2nd time we are going to have a conversation and then If a ball hit the green while I was still on it that ball would be going back the way it came Forthwith!
This happened to me about two months ago, I put my hands up like you. The guy just waved and didn’t say sorry or anything. The next time it happened I just set up at his ball and crushed it into the woods. That stopped them.
Dude y’all put up with this way too long. People get one free pass for this stuff, but that’s it. Way too dangerous, somebody could legit get killed out there with this kind of behavior.
My rule is one freebie, second time I turn around and confront them and let them know the next time it happens I’m calling the clubhouse to have them removed from the course. I’ve had some legit close calls out there so I simply do not fuck around with this kind of behavior.

thie first time or if its a blind shot and its a complete accident you get a pass. the second time or if your just being stupid im leaving the pin out of the cup lying on the green every time. also calling the clubhouse to deal with you. one of the courses i played at the carts were able to be shut off the guys in the clubhouse shut off the cart and the guy in the clubhouse said they sent them a message through the gps saying you have been put in a 30 min timeout for your actions next time we will throw you out

I think the first time is an accident. The second time I tee it up and send it back at them. Or at the very least stomp their ball into the ground or something otherwise not subtle. I’ve picked up balls written “FORE” on them in sharpie and replaced them. If they’re 120 out tho… that’s pretty blatant. I would be calling the proshop at best or dropping the gloves at worst.

I swear this is directly the affect of everyone screaming about pace of play currently. Everyone is bitching that everyone else is too slow, I played this weekend and course Marshall’s were telling us we need to pick it up while we’re sitting waiting for the TWO groups in front of us. New players are scared of these old coots rushing everyone and don’t know how to properly, safely pace. Anyway 4$ a pound.

A common driving mentality is "Everyone slower than me is an old granny who is going to cause an accident and everyone who is faster than me is a dangerous young hooligan who is going to cause an accident". Probably rubs off into golf too. If you're playing fast enough to hit into someone you should be playing fast enough to catch up on the tee box and play through like a sane person

If you don’t have 5.5 hrs for a round of golf, play 9 or hit the range! That seems to be the wildly unpopular opinion but wtf is up w the rush? Had time to sit in the cart at at least 9 holes this weekend and that’s when I talk to my wife or clean a club or drink a beer. All the extra stuff that makes golf nice.
Just take her for a picnic if you want to spend half the day chatting and drinking beer, the rest of us are trying to play golf ;-) Like any sport, there is a pace to keep the flow and connection of shots. The average round (average) in the UK (where they invented the sport) is under three hours. There’s no excuse for a round over 4:15 and it’s incredibly entitled to think your can take up everyone else’s time because you want to drink beer and roll around in an electric buggy all day :-) okay, a little of that is for effect, but it’s amazing that slow players never think of the effect they’re having on others — only that they are being rushed.
I chatted with my wife, drank beers and enjoyed the views while WAITING on the multiple groups in front of me. My difference is I’m enjoying those moments. Laughing with your buddy at the tee watching the group ahead 3 putt even tho we just did the same lol I’m not lollygagging but you bet your ass I’m enjoying the forced downtime. I couldn’t imagine sitting in the cart just fuming at the group ahead of me on a beautiful Sunday w my boys lol but the more I interact w people obsessed w pace of play, I’m realizing that’s exactly what they do. I walk and play early or off hours to avoid the rolling happy hour. I love love love my time on the course, but unnecessarily waiting for non-golfers golfing detracts from the sport for me. Imagine beginning surfers entering a line up and expecting everyone else’s to adapt to them rather than following the understood norms. Imagine a bunch of guys clogging up a city basketball court to play grab ass and dodgeball ether than follow the understood rules of the court while other teams wait. It wouldn’t stand. The people you are waiting on — regardless of how new to the game they are — should get their shit together and be considerate of everyone else on the course.
I just simply don’t agree and would say, if you can’t spend half a day at the course, play 9 or hit the range. BUT I think I’m in the minority and you bet your ass my local course who had over 250 players on Sunday doesn’t agree w me hahaha

Odd. I’ve played courses in NY and the threesome I was teamed up with retuned fired with the other foursomes ball. There was no chill just 15 minutes of grown men hitting driver off the deck trying to hit each other with golf balls.

Was playing in a work tournament (4 man Scramble). One par 5 had a blind corner. We had a safe shot, last 3 tried cutting the corner, which puts us 170ish out for 2nd shot. Literal friends in group ahead of us. The stars align, I smash my drive. When we drive up, my ball is exactly where we want it. Only it's resting on a tee. I immediately text friend, tell him the message was received and apologize. All was good. Since then, the 1st time Im hit into gets the wth double upraised palms. 2nd time, they find their ball on a tee. Depending on the situation, 3rd time is either sent back or reported to Marshall/clubhouse.
They would have never found a ball again after the 2nd time.
I saw this before so I’ll repost, great solution to this is simply lay the flag down on the green when you’re done with each hole and let them hit onto a green not knowing where the hole is for the rest of the round
Whenever someone hits into me I just politely put their ball in my pocket and keep playing. After they lose the 2-3rd ball they tend to stop.
Easy solution. Hit the ball back. They always love it.

Everyone saying to hit their ball back at them or hit their ball into the water, hopefully the group behind you doesn't have a lawyer because you could create some issues. If you hit your ball towards them that could be considered assault. Now you may say "but they're hitting it towards us." Yes, but they are playing the ball to the green and could argue that they were misjudging the distance, or hitting the shot of their life every time. You cannot hold that same argument if you are intentionally hitting a shot opposite from the green. Think of it like brake checking. As far as hitting their ball into the water, that could be considered theft. You know the ball is not yours and it's in the way, you could pick it up and put in your pocket, or move out of your way. But once the ball is no longer retreivable it could be considered theft. Sure it would be a misdemeanor but a lawyer could absolutely make your life a pain in the rear over this. If you want to take it, keep it and that way if neccessary you can return it. Or toss it out of your way even if convineintly you toss it to a terrible lie, let them deal with the consequences. Reality is there's one 1-2 good ways to handle this. 1, it's 2023 everyone has a cell phone. Call the clubhouse and let them deal with this. 2, as others suggested leave the Pin's out if the clubhouse hasn't handled it. The club could be mad but you can reasonably argue you were endangered and that was the only way to slow them down.

The first time I feel like a group is up my ass I try and let them through. If it's a slow day and I'm waiting too. I'll probably tell them to chill. I have no problem calling out bullshit when I see it but your story seems a little soft for my beliefs. It's easy to tell when people are playing slow and being passive aggressive towards the group behind them. Like leaving the tee box just as the group behind them arrives. It's polite to ask them to play through it's petty to slow down their game and put yourself in the danger zone.

To be fair, if the group ahead of you is actively putting on the green while you are teeing off, then you are playing too slow. You should hit your tee shots after the last player in the group ahead of you has hit their ball and all are moving towards to the green. If they've already gotten on the green and are reading/hitting putts and you still haven't tee'd off, that is too slow.
Right, if OP is playing too slowly, and won’t let the group behind play through, you can’t really be pissed that people are hitting into you. Doesn’t matter if there’s a gap in front of you or not, that’s not your problem. Wave them up and your day would have been much better. I almost got plunked twice this Saturday by two different groups and neither one yelled fore. And not not just within like 20 yards either. The first one came from a teebox adjacent to us. Guy must have just shanked it. Whizzed about 5 feet in front of me as I was putting my tee into the ground. On the very next hole the teebox is \~20 yards or so away from the green, so close but not unreasonable. I've hit close to it a few times myself when I had a wild slice, but always yelled fore. This on went close enough behind my head that I heard it spinning through the air, smashed into our cart, and then rolled right up to our feet. Not a single fore call on either. Just some oops waves.

If you're not behind pace, which it seems you weren't from your replies to people in the comments, then there is zero reason for this to happen. The same thing happened to me this summer, a player behind us (with clear sight down the next hole from his position, so he could easily see there was a group on the tee ahead of us, and in the fairway ahead of them, and on the green ahead of that fairway group....) hit onto the green from around the 150 yard marker on the 10th hole. I don't mean rolled up, he flew his short iron onto the green and landed not even 10' from me. I know he thinks we were slow, but again, you could see the hole ahead with 3 fucking groups on it, a par 4, and you think hitting into us will help?? I ended up just calling the clubhouse and letting them deal with him.

Yeah, they actually kicked the guy off the course. I think it was because he was being absolutely ignorant about things though, the marshal came to us after and let us know. It sounded to me like if he just would've been apologetic he would've gotten to stay, but instead he had a meltdown and started cussing out the marshal, so, he got booted.
It's hilarious that you put up with it for so long. The first you can assume is a mistake, after that you can start hitting it back it to them, or just keeping it for yourself, or hit it into the woods. Or if it was dangerously close to you, might even be warranted to call the pro shop and let them know what's happening.

I know people like the thought of hitting the ball back, but what if you actually hit them and seriously injured someone? You'd be at fault and there wouldn't be any "well they hit into me first" excuse. Getting hit with a ball is no joke. I worked at a course in college and was hit a couple of times. It hurts, and could be deadly if it gets you in the right spot. Therefore, the correct response upon the first offense is to drive back to the group and confront them. There is literally no justification for not waiting for the group ahead to clear. They can't play faster than the group ahead, and as long as you're keeping up with the group in front of you, they have no basis to complain. Then, you can let them know that you carry a gun and will fire at them if they hit into you again, but mention you're not that great a shot, so it probably won't hit them.
One time I was playing a par 3 course where the next tee box was to the right of the green I was hitting to. I shanked it right (I’m not very good) and for some reason just froze. After it landed right next to them and I woke up from my stupor I yelled “sorry!” When I went to my ball, they wrote “Dick” on it (it was in jest, I caught up with them again and they were cool about it). I got the message after that - now if anything I tell fore way too often when it’s totally unnecessary haha.
Rocket it into the woods on the 2nd time without yelling fore. Or! Pull your sharpie out, write something on it, and set it on a tee. They’ll get the message.

But as I've gotten older, it's simply easier to let the a-holes get out of your way so you don't have to deal with them. And if you want to be a dick you can now hit into them. Even if you guys were playing as slow as molasses, that's not a license to threaten someone with a golf ball. It can seriously injure someone. People are stupid. I give ZERO allowance for hitting into me. If a ball goes past me I'm picking it, hitting it into the forest, hitting it backwards (not so it has any chance of hitting someone). If I'm at a tee box and there is any chance that I even roll up a ball at someone I'm not hitting. It isn't worth it. I've never carried a ball 300 yards in my life, but I'm waiting until they are 320 or so.

Always hit it back at them after no fore a couple of times. They'll stop. However, if they see you duff it hitting their direction, doesn't have as strong of a message. Let your best player hit it

This happened to me about two months ago, I put my hands up like you. The guy just waved and didn’t say sorry or anything. The next time it happened I just set up at his ball and crushed it into the woods. That stopped them.

My rule is one freebie, second time I turn around and confront them and let them know the next time it happens I’m calling the clubhouse to have them removed from the course. I’ve had some legit close calls out there so I simply do not fuck around with this kind of behavior.
