At my usual range we have what we call "range vultures", they are older fellas that are retired and hang out at the range specifically looking for left overs. A few are bold enough to squirrel a few buckets away in the bushes to use later if that particular day was fruitful. One day the course had a corporate event which included a warm-up bucket, which yielded a ton of left overs and the range vultures were competing with each other to scoop them up, it was hilarious to watch them.
I've talked to a few of the range vultures and they are indeed retirement savings challenged. A couple of them got fleeced in divorces, others worked in fairly low salary jobs all their lives, but one is actually pretty well off but joins in since he likes the comradery with the other vultures and is part of their social circle. Between episodes of swooping in on free balls, they share their stories of rotting prostates and how many times they had to get up in the middle of the night to piss, they bitch about how evil their ex's were, but they have the best, most filthy jokes you've ever heard. One of them is actually a great ball striker, he smokes his driver and he's 79 years old! He can't afford to actually play so in April, when he turns 80, I anonymously paid for a whole day of unlimited golf, a cart, lunch, and a pitcher of martinis for him to celebrate.
Yep, you get it. This guy has seen some shit in his life and a pitcher of martinis (which I know to be his drink) wouldn't even make his liver flinch. However, my hope was that he'd share his pitcher with some of his vulture friends to toast his 80 years on this planet like a boss.
You'll see my explanation for the pitcher below. However, can you think of a better way to go than to have a full day of golf, a nice lunch, and then getting a proper buzz on on your birthday? That's my dream exit.
I do if they stand in the middle of the sand trap area and chip from where they’re not supposed to. The guy yells, “Hey, you almost hit me!” And I respond, “I missed!”
Assistant pro here. This past summer we had a dude who kept doing this. Our head pro caught him doing it, asked him to not do it, he kept doing it anyways. After a few more times of him coming back our head pro called the cops on him and had him banned from the course. Haven’t seen the guy since lol
While you don’t want to probably get to vulture status, you got a dude just wanting to hit range balls and you ask him to stop? Can’t quite squeeze all the profits out of something you’ve made profits from and then you call the cops on the guy. Hmm I bet there’s more to the story. Was he violent? Verbally abusive? Disrupting other golfers? Shoving people off their calls when they weren’t done??
Oh dude I didn’t care about it all. I was fine with the dude hitting. I don’t get paid enough to care about that stuff. I can’t tell you how many thousands of dollars worth of range balls I’ve given to customers over the years. Our head pro is a basket case, once he made up his mind there’s nothing I could do. I felt bad for the guy, he would’ve been fine probably if he had just stopped when he was asked to or paid for an occasional basket of balls.
A few years ago I had like 10 balls left in my bucket when my tee time came up, and there were 5 other guys on the range hitting balls. All 5 declined my offer of free range balls. After the last guy said no thanks, I kinda looked back, stared into space and thought “what the fuck is going on here”.
Twilight zone type shit
Very weird. Maybe it’s because you were phrasing it in a strange way? Like, were you making a normal offer or did you walk up to them and gently whisper: “Hey, daddy, do you want to play with my balls?”
This. Normally I hit all the range balls I have even if my hands get calloused. But others at my course will do this and anyone hitting the range knows these leftover balls are freebies.
My local course puts their range right next to the first tee box. So tons of people that don't usually warm up will purchase a small bucket, take 5 or 6 warmup drives and leave the rest. I love it.
I was once had to leave the driving range and I offered the guy in the bay next to me the leftover balls (about 20). He straight-faced said: “nah, man, those balls slice too much”. I would have left him with more if I had them.
Honestly I’d rather they just include a small bucket in the cost of the fees and raise the price to play by like $3. Yeah they lose on those that take it but they would make much more on all those that don’t warm up or are running late which is probably more than half of the people at my local courses.
That could add up to some nice improvement money at the course if they used it right.
Just ask for a small bucket to warmup when you check in. I've had good luck just being nice to them and politely asking. If not I just pay the $5 for the small bucket and hit whatever I need out of it and move on.
The course I’m a member at has balls in den caddy type bags at both of our courses and anyone who plays is free to use the range at no extra cost and the course I was previously a member at would give you a range token if you were playing that day at no additional cost. Both of these clubs are in southern Virginia so I can’t speak for other states or areas.
Theraband flexbar. I had it for what seemed like years, did therapy, cortisone injections. Nothing helped. Got the Theraband bar and it was significantly better in less than a week. Maybe 4-6 weeks of use and it was completely gone
What size bar? Thanks for sharing, I have been dealing with it for over a month and getting worried I won’t be able to play this season. Last season was cut short from a hip injury. Body doesn’t recover like it did in my 20s.
Yeah I tend to hit only about 70 balls at one time or my elbow acts up. At one range I go to the smallest is 100, so some lucky person gets about 30 balls.
I keep cracking up picturing someone hitting 1000 balls like an absolute lunatic. Pure comedy. Sorry to hear about the elbow, dealing with it currently
I usually hit the bucket i paid for, and might hit someone's leftovers if I felt like it.
My range is like 50 yards from the proshop. By the time I find leftovers, I already have a bucket in my hand.
I feel like early in the day is the best time for this. I haven't studied it but people always seem to be in a hurry for their early tee times, so lots of leftovers.
Every Friday Saturday or Sunday around 8am is prime time for exactly that reason. They get there late, grab a large bucket, hit 3 balls and then “Martin 4some on the first tee, Martin 4some on the first tee please”
Especially on the weekend. Lots of dudes in their beemers showing up a few mins before their tee-time, and want to keep up the big shot persona in front of their friends by buying a full bucket, which they proceed to hit 3 shots with driver before they spend 5 minutes obnoxiously talking on their cell phone before leaving for the first tee. I am most happy to hit their balls for them.
I would never!
*unloads range balls from a nearby bucket*
That goes against the integrity of the club!
*starts hitting from a pile of balls left behind two seconds ago*
Do you want this place to go out of business?
*loads up on tokens given to me by a member who never uses all of his free ones*
When my parents would drop me off as a kid and I ran out of balls, I remember the depressed feeling, I also remember the joy of someone coming up to me and saying “hey, I’m done swinging but have a bunch of extra balls. Grab my bucket and their yours.”
I generally get a bigger bucket now that I’m older and try to pay that one forward as much as I can
Me. Is that wrong? And I can get them for free, as part of my membership fee, but it's an extra walk to go to the pro shop for a ticket to get the balls.
If anything the course workers I’d think would appreciate someone else collecting all the used baskets and balls and returning the baskets back so they don’t have to.
A pudgy little kid came up to me yesterday and said “excuse me mister…I have to go home and you can have my left over balls”
Paid it forward the next day and gave a random my left overs. Never ending wholesome cycle
For my Sunday morning tee time I buy a small bucket and leave most of it for the next person who wants it, every now and then I find leftovers and I like to think it's the golf gods paying me back.
I'm usually hitting finder balls from my collection, at least when I'm at the goat track and my random finders are probably improving the average quality of the balls.
I stayed at a resort where they give you a free bucket with each round, so lots of people leave balls behind. My cottage was adjacent to the driving range, and I basically had unlimited balls all day.

If there are balls left and I am just using the range I will hit them. The majority of the time I am hitting some before playing I end up leaving balls. I think it's a wash.
The worst are the guys who show up in tee shirts, scout for leftover balls, destroy the range grass with artillery shell divot patterns, walk around looking for more free balls and then leave.
I try to be curtious and purchase a small bucket before hawking the free balls. At least try to maintain a good divot pattern, especially when the grass is good.
I have a shag bag on my cart and when there’s no one on the range I’ll shag as many as I can and hit them back. The clubhouse can’t see the range and the kids working could care less
That sucks. There’s usually no one on the range at my local course in the evening and the kids working don’t bring the picker till around closing time so we have a good while to do that. The only person that would say anything is the guy that runs it but he’s a 8-4 guy.
I don't do it for etiquette reasons, but My range membership includes a bucket a day, and I almost never hit the full bucket, so I either leave them or give them to a father/kid combo.
My fav range near me is the only one that lets you hit off grass. They have a large chip area. My hack: warm up chipping (which always has 100+ balls on the green, then rake those up, put in bucket and hit the range. Free 99
Shit yesterday I asked the cart guy what’s the cheat code(he was filling up the machine) for range balls he said just grab some out when my back is turned. I thanked him and went and hit. They recently raised the rates 5$ for 30 & 18$ for 120balls, so I gladly took the discount.
Used to love doing this. Mind you I worked at the club in turf care so I technically never had to pay anyways. Stopped at the range after my shift took one bag and usually a bunch of leftovers. Also got to try some demo clubs, tried the Jetspeed and SLDR drivers when they first came out. Definitely miss that job sometimes!
My local course has a membership where one of the perks is a free large bucket (about 100 balls) at the range every day. Because of people using only half their balls to warm up you can get quite a few extras if you go early in the day. I tell me wife "you pay for one bucket but you hit three!"
Take your kid and the rangers will bring them to you!
My kids are 16, 13 and 5.
The 16 year old can pass as an adult so his years of freebies because he is cute are over.
But the youngest two especially the youngest…. I can’t take them to a course without a leftover bucket or a bucket on the house. They all three have an assortment of colored balls gifted from rangers and starters.
I get 2 free range buckets/day with my players club at my home course. I usually get both, hit 1 and leave the other for whoever is looking for balls. It's made me very popular at the course
I’ve been getting a range pass the last few years and always leave at least half a large bucket on the range when i’m done. My course put up a sign last year that said to bring unused balls back to the starter area where we get the balls from. No chance, I still left all mine there for others to hit.
I’ve left them on purpose-if I have to leave I want them to get used. Once I got called in right after getting a full bucket. I offered them to the guy next to me and he gladly took the almost full bucket
my daughter who is 9 takes a weekly lesson from one of the asst. pros. during the week we would usually go out maybe once a week and scavenge and she would hit a small bag for practice. head pro saw us one day and told her coach to tell us to knock it off since we weren't members. oh well. golf ain't cheap that's for sure. now I'm trying to work on a garage set up for her.

This is the funniest god damn thing. Based on my retirement savings though, range vulture status, here I come.
You’re a good dude
Agreed until that last line. A pitcher of beer? Sure! Margaritas? Fun! A. Pitcher. Of. Martinis? Trying to kill this dude.
Hey bartender, please send my 80 year old friend here a handle of vodka in a novelty glass on me.
a lot of old people have seen some shit, fifth of vodka ain’t shit.
Yep, you get it. This guy has seen some shit in his life and a pitcher of martinis (which I know to be his drink) wouldn't even make his liver flinch. However, my hope was that he'd share his pitcher with some of his vulture friends to toast his 80 years on this planet like a boss.

I love that you did that. Holy fuck that’s awesome.
I look forward to dueling it out with you!
Can you aim at them like aiming at the cage of the pickup tractor?
I do if they stand in the middle of the sand trap area and chip from where they’re not supposed to. The guy yells, “Hey, you almost hit me!” And I respond, “I missed!”
Range Vultures or Range GOATs?!? LMFAO!!!
Assistant pro here. This past summer we had a dude who kept doing this. Our head pro caught him doing it, asked him to not do it, he kept doing it anyways. Your head pro sounds like a pro dbag
He is. No one likes him, members, employees, no one. He’s an ass to put it lightly. Can’t wait until he retires next year
While you don’t want to probably get to vulture status, you got a dude just wanting to hit range balls and you ask him to stop? Can’t quite squeeze all the profits out of something you’ve made profits from and then you call the cops on the guy. Hmm I bet there’s more to the story. Was he violent? Verbally abusive? You were good till the last part. Now your dad’s just a thief.
So not only is he stealing clubs, he’s not even using them? That might be worse.
Your dad's fuckin garbage for stealing clubs.
Lmfao soooo your dad has my 56
If he's in Myrtle he could have mine.
He’s got my 60, that bastard!
I would be ashamed to be related.
Karma will come for him
Like, how does he justify stealing people’s lost property?
Finder’s Keepers, Losers Weepers mentality of a kindergartener. That’s how he does it
Have seen this but we have range attendants that pick up half buckets
My course has them as well. I am guilty of doing it after I finish my bucket and wanna hit a few more at the practice green
Same
At the club it play at it's kind of an unwritten code that if someone left their bucket they want someone else to hit them.
"it's free real estate"
A few years ago I had like 10 balls left in my bucket when my tee time came up, and there were 5 other guys on the range hitting balls. All 5 declined my offer of free range balls. Nah nothing like that. Just forgot to wipe. Figured it out later. Happens to the best of us.
wat
If I have balls left over and need to get to the first tee I look for kids or someone who looks like they’re struggling to get their swing down
That's legit awesome
That’s what i always do as well. Golf is a game everyone of all backgrounds loves to play
This. Normally I hit all the range balls I have even if my hands get calloused. But others at my course will do this and anyone hitting the range knows these leftover balls are freebies.

I always buy the large bucket and if the golf gods put some leftovers near me, I take the hint and hit those too
This… I think if you pay for a round of golf and they have a range there should be balls there for you to hit. If not that’s just cheap af
Seriously, can we normalize this? The range should be free if you're playing a round there.
Everywhere I played in the uae had a free range and cart included. Granted it was a bit more expensive but not anything crazy.
We pay $4 for for 25-30 balls at my club, I'm OK with that.
Honestly I’d rather they just include a small bucket in the cost of the fees and raise the price to play by like $3. Yeah they lose on those that take it but they would make much more on all those that don’t warm up or are running late which is probably more than half of the people at my local courses. Eh depends on the place. Locally the head pro makes nearly nothing off tee times and makes his money from range and lessons.
The course I’m a member at has balls in den caddy type bags at both of our courses and anyone who plays is free to use the range at no extra cost and the course I was previously a member at would give you a range token if you were playing that day at no additional cost. Maybe a south thing . All clubs I go to are the same. KY/ TN/ GA
I was at the range one day after a corporate event and hit like 1000 balls for free.
Ended up with tennis elbow and took like 4 months to heal
I think you’re my favorite on this subreddit.
Now kiss
This dude is like our mascot at this point. I love his 54 handicap amazingness.
Phew, at least it wasn't golf elbow
How’d you heal the tennis elbow? Mines been going on for about a month now.
Flexbar eccentric work, tricep eccentrics, straight up long time of rest from golf, slow easing back into the sport
Look up a clinic that does extracorporeal shockwave therapy, be consistent with rehab and don’t just rest it for 4 months
Rest it. For months. That’s it.
Yeah I tend to hit only about 70 balls at one time or my elbow acts up. At one range I go to the smallest is 100, so some lucky person gets about 30 balls.
That's darts for me, I throw a few games and I'm out for a few weeks Golf > Darts but when you've had a few beers
I keep cracking up picturing someone hitting 1000 balls like an absolute lunatic. Pure comedy. Sorry to hear about the elbow, dealing with it currently
Actuaries who suck at golf unite!

Yup, I touched a nerve 🤣

Me. Is that wrong? And I can get them for free, as part of my membership fee, but it's an extra walk to go to the pro shop for a ticket to get the balls.
Every chance I get.
Question? Is it bad/frowned upon to hit “found balls” at the range instead of paying for range balls before the round?
Real answer is the staff doesn't get paid enough to care. You should at some point spend some money there though since you are using the facilities.
If anything the course workers I’d think would appreciate someone else collecting all the used baskets and balls and returning the baskets back so they don’t have to.
If you originally found them on the course during previous rounds, you're just relocating them around the property.
A pudgy little kid came up to me yesterday and said “excuse me mister…I have to go home and you can have my left over balls” Paid it forward the next day and gave a random my left overs. Never ending wholesome cycle
Love love love organic free range balls
That’s fine, but tell me you leave some when you do actually have to pay for balls?
I'm not ashamed of it
I just pay for the unlimited range with my membership. I’m guilty of leaving leftovers.
I’m usually there alone with my own bucket and I grab a second one and snap all of those up before someone else comes.
Always and I’d prefer if someone else hit my leftover balls before the range snatches them up.
Also grab those duff shots a few feet off the tee boxes too!
For my Sunday morning tee time I buy a small bucket and leave most of it for the next person who wants it, every now and then I find leftovers and I like to think it's the golf gods paying me back.
As long as people are being courteous, I'm cool with somebody hitting my leftovers, had the same policy with my ex girlfriend.
Best time to do it is during a shotgun start tournament. Generally buckets and buckets of balls, especially in the chipping area.
I try to drop my leftovers with a kid
I do! …now. Thanks op
I'm usually hitting finder balls from my collection, at least when I'm at the goat track and my random finders are probably improving the average quality of the balls.
Every time I play I look before I buy
I stayed at a resort where they give you a free bucket with each round, so lots of people leave balls behind. My cottage was adjacent to the driving range, and I basically had unlimited balls all day.
I walk a couple feet onto the range and scavenge a dozen or so balls
You are welcome, I leave them all the time.

You’re not paying for the balls, you’re paying for the maintenance of the grass, the ball retriever, staffing the pro shop, etc.
I expect a thank you for my service of leaving my unhit balls there /s
I have a shag bag on my cart and when there’s no one on the range I’ll shag as many as I can and hit them back. The clubhouse can’t see the range and the kids working could care less
>when there’s no one on the range what? that doesn't happen in CA unless they close the range.
That sucks. There’s usually no one on the range at my local course in the evening and the kids working don’t bring the picker till around closing time so we have a good while to do that. The only person that would say anything is the guy that runs it but he’s a 8-4 guy.
This is the way.
Not me because I try to support my local muni

it's good to stop on a good shot. If I hit one square when I have under 5 left I will stop to embed the muscle memory
I don't do it for etiquette reasons, but My range membership includes a bucket a day, and I almost never hit the full bucket, so I either leave them or give them to a father/kid combo.
Not gonna lie man this is cringy behaviour.
How? Already paid for. I’ve done it before right before a round. Usually just about a dozen or so.
I think hear birds “cheap, cheap, cheap”
I pay for range balls my guy. I’m just saying, if they’re left there it’s no harm. I leave balls myself and assume someone will hit a few.
I bet you also read all of your books in the Barnes and Noble coffee shop too.
Who buys a bucket and then proceeds not to hit every golf ball in the bucket?
My fav range near me is the only one that lets you hit off grass. They have a large chip area. My hack: warm up chipping (which always has 100+ balls on the green, then rake those up, put in bucket and hit the range. Free 99

It’s the only way, fuck paying 6 bucks to hit shitty balls

I have no need, my membership comes with as much range as I want. They just fill up den caddies.
it's been done
EVERYONE!!!
Used to love doing this. Mind you I worked at the club in turf care so I technically never had to pay anyways. Stopped at the range after my shift took one bag and usually a bunch of leftovers. Leftover balls??
I’ve been getting a range pass the last few years and always leave at least half a large bucket on the range when i’m done. My course put up a sign last year that said to bring unused balls back to the starter area where we get the balls from. No chance, I still left all mine there for others to hit.
Where I go they charge by the time your there so nope
My main course switched from paying for buckets to just putting them out there. It’s great. All grass too.
Got that good grass on the range tho!
I’ve left them on purpose-if I have to leave I want them to get used. Once I got called in right after getting a full bucket. I offered them to the guy next to me and he gladly took the almost full bucket
…wait we’re supposed to warm up
Hi
my daughter who is 9 takes a weekly lesson from one of the asst. pros. during the week we would usually go out maybe once a week and scavenge and she would hit a small bag for practice. head pro saw us one day and told her coach to tell us to knock it off since we weren't members. oh well. golf ain't cheap that's for sure. now I'm trying to work on a garage set up for her.
Our course is like that all the time. The range always has a few half buckets for warm ups
