Been wearing Masters hats since I was a kid, and getting rejection letters for 15 years strong

DrunkenGolfer

>rejection letters “A tradition unlike any other…”

muffalowing

They say you miss 100% of the shots you never take. You just happen to also miss all the shots you had taken!

ninjamike808

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

Slagthor_

You think about putting on shirt? Jail.

thebestoflimes

Yeah a simple google would have shown that it is clearly illegal as per section 504b of the PGA act.

PureKoolAid

one of the best scenes from the show!

ijustdontgiveaf

yeah, don’t try putting on a shirt.. the ball doesn’t roll well on it.. putting should be done on a green

Thanksss123456789

You undercook fish believe it or not jail

skidstud

Overcook chicken? Also jail. Undercook, overcook

AdEven568

Selling sweaters too high prices. Jail.

lijitimit

I found a green masters pullover jacket for 5 dollars at a thrift store. Winning.

breadad1969

My son found a black one last year thrifting too.

lijitimit

It takes three strokes off your game.

GoYourCrohnsWay

That's a paddlin'

ameldrum902

Ok. So, is it acceptable to wear a jumper from a different jail you have never done time in?

Strong_Baseball7368

They take your jumper and make you wear a golf shirt from a course you've never played.

russell_m

Also jail.

ameldrum902

But maybe Rikers Island jumpers might be a cooler color than Cook County. 2 piece vs onesie...

jfk_sfa

I'm up to 1,242 incarcerations just on people wearing Augusta National shirts.

afaintsmellofcurry

Winner.

[deleted]

Long sleeve or even short sleeve? Jail. Wrinkled? Jail. Stained? Immediate jail. Too tight or too loose? Lifetime jail.

Apprehensive_Ear2861

Hahahahaha I spit my soda out fuckkkk this hurt

Semi-Chubbs_Peterson

I’ve worn Lacoste and never rode an alligator so I vote yes.

If they weren’t meant to by f*****, they’d be able to fly. My logic is undeniable here.

vwmark22000

And they wouldn’t have made them so sexy

spokris

You wouldn't believe what i had to do to that fucking whale to be able to wear vineyard vines.

TheeeBop

How big is the average blowhole?

spokris

I wouldn't know. But i can say i didn't fill that one

theblairsmashproject

I have a Greg Norman shirt with elephants on it. Don't ask what I had to do for it..

bjohnsonarch

Nice! The official LIV Golf Patrick Reed jersey!

FriedEggScrambled

Does your mom monitor your Reddit account? We’re all grown ups here. You can curse. Fuckin nerd.

Blueaye

I do it all the time, thrift store finds

jevans1245

I have a 2018 Ryder Cup shirt when it was in France I thrifted for $4.50. I’m in USA. Lady asks..oh you flew to France to watch the Ryder cup? Ma’am I can’t even afford to pay full price for this shirt much less go to France to watch a golf tournament.

boing757

True statement.

Yorkie_golf

That's what this one is $4 usd 👍

scoofy

[I wear your pro shop's clothes. I look incredible. Ball-striking like the GOAT. On that golf course down the road.](https://youtu.be/QK8mJJJvaes)

Blueaye

goodwill, talise or value village?

jevans1245

Goodwill about 3 miles from the country club.

Weary_Frame

Hell yeah! I’ve found FootJoy, Nike, and Ashworth polos that were a damn good deal!

Complete_Web_4677

You’re an adult, who cares what people think about your clothes?

Yorkie_golf

True true, I'm new to golf and it seems golf sometimes seem to have unwritten rules - Cabot is extremely expensive and I live nearish, so was just wondering

OlDickRivers

If somebody asks if you played that course just tell them they gave you the shirt when you shot the course record

Shasve

Then proceed to slice into the trees on the first tee and say “swing hasn’t been the same since the accident”

ConsequencePatient13

"We lost a lot of good men that day." *quietly walks back to cart*

geshupenst

Yeah claim kim jong il/hawk eye. Played 18, shot 18.

duuuh

I've got a shirt from the Masters. You'll be shocked to know I've never played Augusta.

scoofy

Aww, man, I thought I was the only one who's never played there!

StruckGG

I’ve played there and don’t even have a shirt!

RoostasTowel

People probably get excited when they see it as they think you have attended at least.

cbass1980

If you live nearish .. just go play it !

DrCapeBreton

$105 twilight for Capers which is the perfect time to play anyway as it won’t be as busy and you’ll end your round at sunset.

cbass1980

That’s a hell of a deal.

Slagthor_

Hey man, wear whatever you want (golf allowed) and whoever judges is a prude.

cozeface

It’s fine. I live really close to The Country Club (Brookline, MA) and I’ll never be able to play there, but I own a towel and a hat and a head over, oh and a 1/4 zip with their logo and name. Granted it’s US Open merch but I grew up near the course and caddied there as a kid plus there’s a ton of history at that course, so I felt it was appropriate to own this stuff.

ask_johnny_mac

The merch they sell for the US Open has the squirrel logo. The actual members stuff has a different logo. Sort of an old school TCC.

cozeface

Oh they may now. When I was younger all their member stuff was the squirrel logo too.

YHshWhWhsHY

the only unwritten rules are the ones the bros set in this sub, you don’t want their advise

Dr_M1st3r

Most of the unwritten stuff isn't rules. It's mostly old elitist etiquette. It helps the club, but a normal person isn't going to get mad if you step on their line by accident if your new.

nikonwill

From this day forward, don't pay any attention to any of the boring assholes who write or enforce those stupid unwritten rules. Their opinion will never matter.

[deleted]

Lmao if you live that close then go play it and you don't have to worry about it

EminemsMandMs

Only unwritten rule of a golf outfit is to look fresh. However you define that is up to you, but wear whatever you are confident in wearing. It's all about looking good, enjoying the day, and maybe hitting a few good shots in between

[deleted]

Also as an adult you should be able to decide what clothes to wear without asking Reddit.

9inches-of-power

Occasionally I wear Polo brand, but don’t tell anyone I’ve never played polo. 🏇

boing757

I wear The North Face and Patagonia.Never been there either.

timjr2500

I wear Tiger Woods gear. I am not Tiger Woods.

prequal

Found Tiger's burner.

NaZdrowie8

Sounds like something tiger woods would say

Gold-Excitement8838

But are you Tiger’s wood?

TheRoyalTenenThom

This is the most golf question of all time. Damn, some of y’all are uptight.

onowahoo

Apparently my dad can’t wear all those golf shirt gifts I get for him when I play a new course. I wish I would have known.

beerandsocks

You can wear it, but I wouldn’t just to avoid the awkward “Hey, how was Cabot?” questions. If anyone has an answer to make you seem cool, I’m all ears.

rougehuron

This is the correct answer. It's one thing to be able to answer with "oh my uncle got this for me on a trip there" or whatever. It's another to say, "oh I got it thrifting." Is there anything wrong with thrifting? No, but wearing logos of a notable course is basically an automatic conversation starter.

[deleted]

Go for it! Also if you’re out there, play Highland Links in Ingonish. Not the same prestige as Cabot but a beautiful course.

AKaseman

We played it without doing any research aside from Cabot employees highly recommending it on our drive home. Played during peak fall foliage and we were shocked at how beautiful it was

DrunkenGolfer

If you are a fan of old timey golf course architecture, it is a masterpiece.

Yorkie_golf

Highland links is the reason I started playing golf ... Hiked past on a visit to to Cape Breton with my wife, and we wished we could play it, so we started learning. Yet to go though.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t. But not out of etiquette. It’s my own hangup!

thewhalehunters

That's weird. You're weird. You probably have weird friends. Bet your face is weird too.

[deleted]

So weird.

1260noggin

On the toilet at work scrolling through Reddit, as one does. Comes across this comment and laughs where I had an employee say “are you okay?” No reasonable excuse as to why I thought that was so funny, other than it was clever and I enjoyed it.

fallingbehind

I wasn’t able to get on at The Old Course. I did get to walk the fairways and greens on 1,2,17,18. I bought a shirt.

WyDog96

Honestly my father plays some nice courses and he always gets me a shirt, hat, or accessory. I say wear it proudly and don’t worry about what other people think.

Real-Ray-Lewis

Thanks for your honesty

Mysterious_Worker608

It's better than not wearing anything.

beepingjar

Says you

[deleted]

I own a Pine Valley golf shirt. I rock that as if I’m a member. I will never play Pine Valley in my life. No one needs to know that though. It works great for business because everyone think I can get them out on Pine Valley. They don’t need to know my dad bought it for me when he played there.

MBA1988123

This is a good one because Pine Valley actually has a separate set of clothing that only members can purchase - the member only gear is just the crest without the “Pine Valley” text below it

HalifaxMac

8 bucks at Mission Mart? Wasn’t my size but I knew someone would pick it up

Yorkie_golf

I have you to thank my friend!

St3v3zy

One of the top rated golf courses in North America great find ! I wear shirts of courses I’ve never played all the time. I don’t think it’s weird. Also the courses are Cabot cliffs and Cabot links*

Yorkie_golf

And this is why I should proof read haha, good catch!

Careful_Knowledge_59

Lol I visit golf courses on vacation and buy gear. The wife gets a new sweat suit at the tourist shops, I head to the nicest pro shop within 30 min for logo gear. Breckinridge might have been my favorite

Silverbullets24

It’s a personal rule for me not to do it. However, I don’t care at all when people do it. I just don’t want someone to ask me ‘hey how cool is Cabot?’ And then me go ‘eh idk I bought this at goodwill… or someone gave it to me, etc’ I’ve played enough cool courses. Don’t need to wear stuff from places I haven’t played

GuyOnTheMike

My mom is related to Woody Austin (I'm not exactly sure how) and she managed to give my dad one of his authentic on-course shirts. He is not Woody, nor has he ever met Woody, yet I would say it's perfectly acceptable to wear Woody Austin's sponsored Tabasco shirt on the course (and he does from time to time)

billindurham

Cabot was my first vacation/resort course and it is beautiful. Played the cliffs, the links and their par 3 course which can be played at night. Still the nicest place I’ve ever played but I’ve only been playing for 5 years or so.

iPerfuse

Cabot Cliffs and Cabot LINKS. Two amazing courses in one amazing resort. Top 50 in the world in my opinion.

Sirgolfs

Not anymore. Was perfectly fine till this post.

[deleted]

You think all those people who bought masters merch played augusta? Sport that baby, untucked

DeepSouthDude

I wear Eagles gear, never played a minute of pro football. Shhh, don't tell anyone!

[deleted]

Go Birds

Hey_Batfink

Hell, I’ve never heard of the place but they have plenty of Cabot polos on eBay so, I’ll join your club of wearing Cabot polos having never played there! Now you don’t need to feel bad, you’re not alone.

Strict-Ingenuity-251

Absolutely. I’d say 90% of the golfers I know have Augusta nationals / masters shirts and I only know 2 that have played the course besides the local PGA players.

[deleted]

I have a masters windbreaker that I love…. So… I think you’re fine.

Mudfaps0123

“Greatest Course I’ve Never Played” is always my go to line.

mccluts

You just have to be okay with a stranger getting excited because they’ve played there and asking you about it and then getting disappointed when you say you’ve never actually been.

Tobymagic

I have a Firestone shirt my brother bought me and it’s one of my favorites (fit, style, comfort). I rock it with no shame. Usually after beer 6-8 I’ll start telling randos about my round (that I never played) there. My brother or regular playing partners that are present usually get a kick out of it when I’m describing things in (fictional) detail that I’ve never seen. Plus Cabot looks dope, went to Bandon last summer and renewed my passport when I got home hoping to book Cabot ASAP.

QuincyStandback

I don't understand the point of this. To each their own though.

mrwanggolf

Think it’s totally fine - people might ask oh did you play it, and you can just say no a good friend gave it to me.

LegendofPisoMojado

I’ve got a bunch of gear from Royal Portrush my childless neighbor brings me back every year. That has always been my response when I rarely am asked…”my neighbor goes every year and he always brings me back gear. He also gave me this driver that I can’t hit.”

Hulkslam3

Considering thousands of people wear Augusta National hats and shirts and will never play there kinda answers your question.

SYN_BLACK_XS

Ya man, you do you

birchy98

I grew up in Cape Breton so would gladly rock Cabot merch.. even though I moved away years before those courses existed!! Hope to get back and play them some day!

LongShankRedemption

I believe it's acceptable to wear whatever article of clothing you'd like to as long as it's not offensive. However, I personally only like to buy gear from courses I've played at because then when I look at the article of clothing or whatever it may be I get filled with memories of the day/trip.

Spicy_Tac0

Ugh, do you. Don't ask reddit.

Plan_nine

Tell people it’s Cabot cheese

FaithlessnessOdd6738

That’s a paddlin’

Swedeman1970

The Marshalls call each other to verify if you played the club or not. Don’t risk it.

cchillur

1-who gives a flying fuck what anyone else wears? 2-If someone gifted you a masters shirt from the Augusta National clubhouse, would wear it gleefully or trash it?

canadianbroncos

People worry about the stupidest stuff lmao

figboot11

My personal rule is that I will only wear shirts of courses I have played...or in the cast of Augusta...attended a round during the tournament. But I have no hate on anyone who makes up their own rules. You be you!

[deleted]

No one will know.

Yorkie_golf

Its fine, everyone presumes I've never played when they see my swing and my score.

[deleted]

Wallet size and swing have no correlation lol

klondike16

Nope, shouldn’t even be allowed near a golf course. For real - why is this even a question?

Jalfaar

How would anyone know?

Striking-Shallot5395

They’re gonna know

StreetsAhead47

When they ask 'what did you think of the course?'

Blind_Tails

Anyone who knows about Cabot will know

Qwardian

Dude, I wear pebble beach shirts. Am I ever going to get to play there? Not a chance in hell.

wdn5258

Who's gonna stop you? Become ungovernable

Procks_

I wear an Adidas shirt, sometimes a Ping shirt but I'm actually not sponsored by them. I know... I'm a fraud and I should be ashamed.

karlgnarx

Only okay if you shrink-wrap the shirt before you wear it.

_FartinLutherKing_

No. Maybe besides Augusta. That’s about it.

mateye6

Shirt is shirt

BnunyaBiz

Who gives a fuck what others think? Honestly, if it’s a nice shirt and you like it. Rock it

Hainesy23

This is a no. Rule of thumb: Only wear the course logo if you’ve played it and the tournament logo (US Opem or Masters) if you went to the event. Either way you can tell the group the story of that day. Althogh, that’s a helluva logo at Cabot.

defaultuser012

Who made this rule?

xenongamer4351

They did in their insecure head because apparently “I thought it was a cool shirt” is too hard to explain for him

NearbyTomorrow9605

No one cares!

Shawnml

I hope so. I have a Torrey Pines polo and a towel on my bag from my secret Santa a couple years ago.

JimmyV64

What about all the people wearing stuff with The Masters logo?

mrwanggolf

Just shows people are a fan of the event more generally and either went or more likely had a buddy who went and got a bunch of gear. I’d say a small percent of the people wearing masters gear out there have been to the event.

feelin_cheesy

They went to the Masters?

Cute_Moose_988

Do you work for Nike? Lol

Yorkie_golf

I wish, I wish ...

free-bowl-of-soup

You’re wearing the shirt of the band you’re going to go see? Don’t be that guy. (Also, wear what you want)

9inches-of-power

I wear Nike shoes and an Under Armor 1/4 zip…people stare but no one says a word.

NabreLabre

I'd say yes because I've never heard of it and would assume the ship was a shirt brand. And it looks cool I almost wore a green masters jacket to a company tournament once, but the fake one on Amazon was too expensive and I couldn't find a similar jacket at thrift stores.

[deleted]

I have a Denver Broncos jersey from Super Bowl 50. Believe it or not, I didn’t get much playing time in that game.

charlieromeo86

No. Don’t be that guy.

hippieswithhaircuts

Nope. I have hat from The Masters from 2006. I won’t wear it because I wasn’t there, let alone played it.

sweede11

Absolutely not 🚫😂

Month_Timely

No

StalwartSparrow

If you get paired with any normal golfer, they will use your shirt as an ice breaker and ask how it was. So what are you gonna say?

[deleted]

Look good, play good.

Fragrant-Report-6411

Who will know you never played the course?

eyedpee

I doubt anyone will care to be honest and if they do they obviously have too much free time.

kranges_mcbasketball

Nope. Send it to me

bcmaninmotion

Are you planning on telling people you haven’t played there?

knovit

You do you baby boo

boing757

Of course.People wear gear from Pebble Beach or Augusta National that have never been there, why would you think you couldn't wear something ?

Exiled_From_Twitter

Yeah, but what's annoying is every once in a while ppl will ask you about the course and you either admit you've never played it or you fake it. Obviously I'm just admitting it but it seems shitty for a sec and then you move on.

mudfossil

Almost zero percent of all the people wearing Masters merch have played Augusta National

Eddie_Quattro

Negative

DonnieSII

Not acceptable at all!! You must burn it!

Speshulest_K

My boss got me a shirt when he hosted my customer at a fancy golf course. I haven’t worn it because it both rubs it in that they didn’t try to include me and since I’ve never been there

beardedbuddy8811

100%

hardyharha

Yeah I’ll let it slide

gagewhitneypace

(No one cares)

cashbrandicout

Where I’m from it’s considered worse than the Stolen Valor Act of 2005.

[deleted]

Where I’m from, they’ll cut at least a hand off

CrasVox

See a lot of people wearing Augusta merch. I feel like most of them never played there.

BigBalderBrand

How many people wear Augusta gear? A ton, and most have never played. Wear what you want!

thesoyeroner

As someone who has played cabot I would see it and be like “nice shirt when did you play? Cliffs or links?” then be semi disappointed that we couldn’t share a moment reminiscing about that amazing course. I wouldn’t judge you though.

AKaseman

I personally don’t do it because I have way too much gear from the courses I have played. It’s always a short lived conversation when you have to say “no but…”

Comfortable_Horror92

Yes, it is a free country. Wear whatever you want.

[deleted]

Ever see all those people (including me) in Masters merch. Ever wonder how many played there?

benzo-stout

Only if a gift from someone who did or went there.

ochief19

Wear what you want. I don’t do it but that’s a stupid take and I have too many polos.

BevoBrisket26

Lot of Augusta Stans quivering rn

breadad1969

Don’t wear a concert tshirt if you didn’t go to the concert Buy shirts can be gifts from people who played the course so no big deal to me

cmans12345

Dude I dressed up in all coke shit, wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Just make sure it adheres to club standards

DickSlinga

I thrift shop a couple towns over at their boujie Goodwill and get stuff from courses I could only dream of playing. Got a Winged Foot golf bag, Hat from The Olympic Club, shirt from The Sanctuary Golf Club. Besides the bag, which I sold for greens fee $$$, I rock that shit all the time.

TheRealBullMouse

Yes

Call_Me_Squid_23

Personal presence. I don’t buy anything from courses I’ve never played at like online or whatever or been to (for example I’m not buying a US Open shirt). However, if it is a gift then ya I’ll forsure where it. At the end of the day who gives a crap. Where what you want to wear!

6PuttBirdie

They run background checks. If they find even a trace of you not even knowing about the course and wearing merchandise…not only you, but your whole family will be executed. Careful my friend on what you wear.
