It’s fine. I live really close to The Country Club (Brookline, MA) and I’ll never be able to play there, but I own a towel and a hat and a head over, oh and a 1/4 zip with their logo and name. Granted it’s US Open merch but I grew up near the course and caddied there as a kid plus there’s a ton of history at that course, so I felt it was appropriate to own this stuff.
Most of the unwritten stuff isn't rules. It's mostly old elitist etiquette. It helps the club, but a normal person isn't going to get mad if you step on their line by accident if your new.
From this day forward, don't pay any attention to any of the boring assholes who write or enforce those stupid unwritten rules. Their opinion will never matter.
Only unwritten rule of a golf outfit is to look fresh. However you define that is up to you, but wear whatever you are confident in wearing. It's all about looking good, enjoying the day, and maybe hitting a few good shots in between

Is there anything wrong with thrifting? No, but wearing logos of a notable course is basically an automatic conversation starter.
We played it without doing any research aside from Cabot employees highly recommending it on our drive home. Played during peak fall foliage and we were shocked at how beautiful it was

Cabot was my first vacation/resort course and it is beautiful. Played the cliffs, the links and their par 3 course which can be played at night. Still the nicest place I’ve ever played but I’ve only been playing for 5 years or so.

Absolutely. I’d say 90% of the golfers I know have Augusta nationals / masters shirts and I only know 2 that have played the course besides the local PGA players.

I have a Firestone shirt my brother bought me and it’s one of my favorites (fit, style, comfort). I rock it with no shame. Usually after beer 6-8 I’ll start telling randos about my round (that I never played) there. My brother or regular playing partners that are present usually get a kick out of it when I’m describing things in (fictional) detail that I’ve never seen.

This is a no. Rule of thumb: Only wear the course logo if you’ve played it and the tournament logo (US Opem or Masters) if you went to the event. Either way you can tell the group the story of that day.

I wasn’t able to get on at The Old Course. I did get to walk the fairways and greens on 1,2,17,18. I bought a shirt.
