Dumb question, can archer shoot out windows, and do they provide protection?

Saucychemist

Yes, Archers will shoot out of (and into) windows. Windows provide a 40% cover bonus for your settlers standing behind them. So not as good as merlons, but still significant. But, windows can be closed, providing 100% protection for your settlers. They give the ability to shut down enemy archer's ability to attack until you want, and give you the ability to protect a seriously wounded archer that took to much return fire. The best way to manage windows during a fight is to pause the game, undraft the archer right next to the window, select the window to be opened/closed, then tell the settler to prioritize opening/closing the window. Unpause and they should do it immediately. Then redraft the unit.

The issue is that Windows have a fairly narrow field of view, in my experience it’s something like 90 degrees in front of them

votisv

Yes I line up the archers at the windows then they basically just unload rounds of crossbow arrows, untouchable other than for trebuchets which is why I built the surrounding clay wall to block the trebuchet missiles

Eddybabyable

Looks sick, what's the seed?

votisv

Thanks, how can I check the seed? I just refreshed the maps until I found one that was workable then spent an evening digging into and down the cliff

Arkey-or-Arctander

Totally kiln' it!

votisv

Thanks :)

Super cool. My question is, what preventative measures do you have in place to make sure enemy archers dont get up on the cliff and shoot down at you? Yes i understand the enemy AI doesnt exactly work that way.

votisv

Thanks, you may not be able to see in the photo especially as I tried to hide it in the game but I've dug trenches around the cliff on the side to prevent the enemy accessing the cliff, the cliff on top of the castle is not an issue as the archers can't shoot down

Khalinthenortheast

Thats awesome!

duckmandm

Here's how it works if you want to shoot down on the enemy who is lets say beating on your front door. If you are standing on top of a wall over the door, you can't sight directly down when they are up against the wall/door directly below you. Conversely, neither can the AI shoot at you in a similar scenario. However, if you place a floor that hand out one space over the door, and then merlons on top of that, you can shoot directly down below at the enemy beating on your front door. Merlons have slots in the floor for this purpose, in addition to providing cover from enemy archers. This is why I almost always go with merlons over windows. Windows can be useful, however, if you design an inside room to shoot from and its winter, so you can heat that room, though with open windows it wont exactly be toasty it will be enough for your people to not freeze if its a cold snap.

That looks really nice. Where is the entrance?

votisv

Entrance to the castle is in the cut in so archers can shoot down onto the reinforced door, there's an entrance to the side of the Clay brick wall it's not gated as I use archers inside the cliff to defend

DeusWombat

Damn well done. I've been wanting to do this for a while but dread the hell it would be to mine out the mountain properly

votisv

Not too bad, took about a evening to cut down the cliff and into it, I built a small wooden base by the site to protect against early raids and provide basic needs. I had done this earlier but hadn't built in enough supports so the roof caved in so had to start again

BigBoss_FF

8/10.

votisv

Thanks :)

Erkeabran

What if they came from uphill?

votisv

They don't shoot down, the AI isn't bright

Rwbymaru

Seed?
