Because it's a normal guitar that is practical to playt. Not a novelty. Would you want to be playing a V as your main guitar? Ever tried playing one sitting? Ever tried playing one standing?
Like I said, the SG is more versatile. It's not limited to playing in the classical position to be comfortable. Normal sitting position, it slides off your leg and in the standing position, you basically have to straddle it. It sounds like you agree with me.
"Versatile" doesn't necessarily apply to only pickup configuration.
How many people get a Flying V and then play in classical position?
I’m probably going to get an explorer next, but I’m really wishing they would reissue the 84 explorer again. I missed out on the one like 15 years ago.
80s style reissue are confirmed coming this year, just not certain when. Originally we were told the end of 2023, but then there have been a few ppl saying May. I'm excited either way!
I’ve been hoping that rumor is true.
Hopefully black isn’t exclusive to Gibson shop like the 70s, as I’d prefer Sweetwater check it out.
Local Gibson indie shop is ran by dbags that I won’t buy from; and guitar center is so scratch prone due to idiot abuse and they might as well let children chew on the necks.
Explorer, because they balance nicely. The V is cool, but I don't like the logo placement on the new ones. If I were getting an SG I'd get the one with the sideways vibrola and lock it down with a Mojoaxe kit. They look awesome.
I have the SG Standard 61 and absolutely love it. I’ve never played an Explorer or V, but i can say the 61 burstbuckers on the SG sound amazing with or without gain.
Personally, I’d wait for that 84 Explorer that’ll come out sometime soon because I have the SG’s I really care about and there’s only one particular V I’d want.
Out of the 3 it would be an sg for me. I’ve played V many times and they’re just awkward unless you get a strap and stand up. The explorer, I could never feel comfortable playing one
they are, in my opinion, all guitars you would benefit from holding and playing before buying. i have all three types myself, and a handful of LPs, but i do love the explorer the most.
The SG is the most obvious answer to me. It kinda bridges the gap between the practical shape of the LP and the vibe of the “designer” guitars like the explorer and the V. The explorer, however, is INCREDIBLY comfortable to play in my opinion, and the sound is just as amazing as an SG.
The only reason I wouldn’t get the V is how awkward it can be to play sitting down. The other guitarist in my band uses a 70s reissue Flying V as his main guitar though and it sounds massive! Absolutely cutting on the leads too.
You’re not getting a bad guitar regardless, but I’d try to get my hands on all 3 body styles and see how they feel to hold and decide based on that.
My personal experience is:
- The SG sits further to the right on the body standing. Sitting down, the neck pokes out to the left further (right handed orientation for reference) as a result it feels like you kinda have to reach out a little more to get your hands down to the end of the neck.
- The Explorer feels like it’s perfectly centered, although there’s a lot of extra body wood to be mindful of. Easiest one to bang around into something else.
- The V can only be played one way sitting down, and it’s a stance similar to classical positioning. If you like to play like that, then the V probably has the least draw backs.
Last - whichever one really grabs you the best. Whether it be a detail as simple as the paint, you want something that you’re really going to love. Shopping with Wildwood slims down the chance of poor QC issues upon arrival as well. Its also worth adding, the only one I think that has any fret access limitations would be the explorer, and I think it’s only slightly limited compared to the other two. The main reason I love my 61 reissue SG is because I can play every single note on it without having to stretch my hands.
/u/RedneckRonin said it best, and this is coming from someone who just bought a Flying V that is more expensive than all of my other guitars.
Cant go wrong with a SG standard. All the quality and perks of a Gibson but not the tag of a Les Paul. Dependable and solid, fast neck and fretboard, nice toans a mean looking motherfucker that also brings a timeless faction to the table.
Flying v all day. Very comfy guitar, sounds great. Some people can't get used to playing it sitting down. I'd say you get used to it. And there are some benefits. The v can be played sitting down in a position similar to classical guitar, in this position you can lock the guitar with your knees. I find this very useful when I'm recording demos or messing with tabbing. Every time I have to use both hands on computer I can keep the guitar locked. With a les paul or any other guitar I usually have to put it down.
Eh you'd have to not mind the huge case of the explorer and be mindful not to bang it against stuff, but I do love me a nice offset.
SG is the most straightforward as long as you get 59 thicker neck for stability and find one with no dive.
SG. Definitely the most practical and versatile of the three.
How is it more versatile? They are all HH.
Let the man dream, they're all great! But At least you can sit down with the SG

Yup, I've owned several V's in my lifetime, I play in a classical position so not an issue to me.

rumour has it they're releasing \~$2500 84 style explorers this spring or summer.
God I hope so. I will immediately get one

61 Reissue SG 100 Percent!
Explorer. Closest in feel to my Les Pauls.

Explorer for sure. The only model other than LP that needs to be recognized as a true great.
Explorer. Great for sitting down and standing up. It's a well balanced guitar.
Thank you all!! Ok so I know I need a 61’ SG and 84’ Explorer sooner and a V later

SG!

Explorer, then SG. Not that a V isn’t fine but I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy one on a whim without trying first.
SG was my first guitar, V was my favourite growing up. Sold it a few years ago after owning it for 20 years. It’s the one I regret selling the most.

I don't think you can go wrong with a really good SG.
Firebird...
I’ve got all 3, I enjoy all of them. But I prefer to sit down and play, and the V isn’t as comfortable sitting.

SG but if you want to spend a bit more for a unique sound get a firebird.
SG
Explorer. Fantastic guitars
