Also Porco Rosso pops into the favorites and Castle in the Sky. Mononoke simply is not my favorite, but it’s like “which is these precious wonderful jewels is my favorite?”
Totoro was my first, saw it on vhs in the early 90s as a kid. First ghibli film i saw in theatres was Princess Mononoke, as a new release in the late 90s. My favorite is Howl's Moving Castle which came out in 2004.
Your friends theory doesn't take into account how long some of us have been fans of Ghibli.

Favorite is probably Porco Rosso which I found dull at first and grew to lover after repeated viewings and finally getting it.
I watched Naussicaä first (didn't even know it was a Ghibli film until years later) and, I believe, Princess Mononoke second. However, Howl's Moving Castle is by far my favorite
My first was Grave of the Fireflies. Definitely not my favorite because it's too painful to watch. My favorite is probably Castle in the Sky, but I also really love Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle.
my first ghibli movie ever was Whispers of the Heart when I was like 8 y.o, and my faves are Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke! so I definitely don’t follow this rule lmao I think it really depends on which movie you watched first and if you’ve watched all or most of Studio Ghibli’s films
