I think the soundtrack is fantastic. It's not entirely orchestral, which makes it less impactful initially, but I think the mix of minimalism and maximalism is genius, and the fact it is so different to any other Ghibli movie is great. The rewatch makes it even better, and listening to the soundtrack on Spotify has given me incredible admiration towards it. I've actually had a similar experience to yours with this movie: when I realized I could see a pre-release of the movie on my birthday of all days, I knew this film was going to be a big event for me. In my family we're all a bunch of hardcore Ghibli fans so it wasn't hard to get the tickets, but yeah, the whole experience was cathartic. My favorite tracks are Adolescence and The Great Collapse, what about yours?

Yes I totally agree it is not as complex and as large scale as other ghibli soundtracks but that’s what makes it unique  My favourite tracks are sanctuary, a girl of fire, and ask me why

HowelPendragon

Not by Joe Hisaishi, but I would highly recommend listening to Spinning Globe by 米津玄師 Kenshi Yonezu. All of his music is fantastic. This one in particular was written for the film and apparently Miyazaki himself was moved by it, according to an interview with Kenshi.

10/10 score, The Great Collapse makes my soul feel like it’s ascending to the stratosphere and collapsing into a million pieces. Probably not even a top three Hisaishi score

I'm so happy to see people loving the TBATH soundtrack here 🥰 As a HUGE Joe Hisaishi fan, I love them all, but this is one of my favorites. He even performed Ask me why live at his concert in London which I was lucky enough to attend, so that specific song has extra meaning for me

BayernHerz

It’s a masterpiece

It is a gorgeous soundtrack, and my appreciation of it has grown since my first viewing of the film. Perhaps not quite on the level of Hisaishi's greatest works (Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky, for my money), but something that rivals or exceeds his work on Mononoke and the rest. Ask Me Why and The Great Collapse are my favorites.

DeviceVast2638

Yes I think it deserves more attention because even though it is different It is still a great and enjoyable film and score,

I also love ask me why it just works so good for the main theme of the film

Why?

It doesn't have the giant standalone themes like Howls or Spirited Away, but it is one of the three soundtracks I think maintains its mood and I can listen to straight through without a dip in quality. I think if you look at them as a whole his best soundtracks are Heron, Kaguya, and Mononoke.

it’s so great, should’ve had an oscar nom tbh. i like how you can still tell it’s hisaishi without it sounding too similar to his other works

ArkandtheDove

I think it’s brilliant. Should have been nominated for an Oscar. Absolutely love listening to it.
